Characters: Fairy Tail Team Natsu
aka: Team Natsu
From left to right: Erza, Lucy, Natsu, and Gray. Center: Happy.

The main group of protagonists in the series. The team initially consists of Natsu, Happy and Lucy, but Gray and Erza join the team after tagging along a number of times. Wendy and Carla also become unofficial additions to the team. Other guild members that have had on-off membership include Juvia, Gajeel, and (most recently) Elfman.

The team has no official name, so "Team Natsu" is what the American fanbase has decided to call them.

Here be spoilers, so be warned.

Back to the main character index

  • Badass Crew: Recognized as Fairy Tail's strongest team.
  • Blonde, Brunette, Redhead: The ladies: Lucy as the Blonde, Wendy as the Brunette (dark blue), and Erza as the Redhead.
  • Boke and Tsukkomi Routine: Natsu/Erza as the boke with Gray/Lucy as tsukkomi. Happy tends to zig-zag with the trope.
  • Brown Eyes: All of the girls (including Carla) have these, and are significantly more rational than the guys (though Erza depends on the situation).
  • Childhood Friends: Natsu, Gray and Erza. Lucy questions the nature of their friendship when Erza asks Natsu and Gray if they want to take a bath together like when they were kids.
  • Covert Perverts: Natsu, Gray and Erza freely looked through Lucy's underwear drawer while Lucy keeps centerfolds of a bikini-clad Mirajane.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: All of their backstories are quite tragic and sad. To elaborate:
    • Natsu was left by Igneel and the person he made a Childhood Marriage Promise dies (not really).
    • Gray loses his birth parents at Deliora's hands and then loses his new mom because of his actions, as well as causing his technical brother to hate him.
    • Erza's family was killed by kidnappers that enslaved her, until she led a revolt that cost her not only an eye, but her friends' loyalty. Also, she lost her (adoptive) grandmother in a carriage accident.
    • Lucy's mother died when she was young, and her father became emotionally distant towards her after that.
    • Wendy, like Natsu, was left by her dragon (when she was still about 5 years old) and then left to wander the world with Mystogan until he left her.
  • Destructive Saviors: Most of their missions' pay goes to the repairs of the place that they destroyed, much to Lucy's ire.
  • Determinator: No matter what, they never give up, and if they can help it, they never let themselves lose to the same opponent twice.
  • Disney Death/Put on a Bus: After Acnologia blasts Sirius Island they, along with those who participated in the S-Class exam and Laxus, go missing for seven years.
    • The Bus Came Back: They return to the titular guild, finding it in shambles since nobody who wasn't part of the S-class exam on Tenrou Island was strong enough to defend the guild from other guilds pushing them around.
  • Fish out of Temporal Water: They spent seven years inside the Fairy Sphere after the Sirius Island incident.
  • Four-Temperament Ensemble:
    • Sanguine: Happy, a cheerful cat who has a nasty habit of cracking jokes at the expense of his teammates.
    • Choleric: Natsu/Carla. Natsu is a Hot-Blooded Determinator who will stop at nothing to protect the guild's name, and Carla is an arrogant, bossy little cat who initially cares about little more than keeping Wendy safe.
    • Melancholic: Erza, who is serious, standoffish, and one of the more strategic members of Team Natsu. She felt very lonely and isolated for a large part of her life.
    • Phlegmatic: Gray/Wendy. Gray is introverted, (relatively) down to Earth, and tends to hide his emotions, while Wendy is a kind Shrinking Violet who, unlike most of the guild members, doesn't particularly enjoy fighting.
    • Leukine: Lucy, is usually a peace-loving bookworm, but she's the most cheerful member of Team Natsu after Natsu himself, and has her moments when she is easily pissed off.
  • Heroes Fight Barehanded: Natsu, contrasting rivals: Gajeel and Gray, who all use weaponry of some sort.
  • Heroic BSOD: Played for Laughs. Along with Levy, Juvia and Wendy after it's revealed that one day in the Celestial Spirit World is equal to three months in Earth-land, which they should have spent training for the Great Magic Games.
  • Honor Before Reason: A lot of the times they don't end up having to pay a huge repair bill, Natsu or Erza are usually refusing a payment for one reason or another.
  • Like Brother and Sister: Erza, Natsu, Gray and Lucy. Natsu and Gray are prone to even more excessive levels of violence and bad-assery if they learn Erza and/or Lucy are in genuine danger and Erza was willing to be vaporized and then later atomized to try and protect Natsu.
  • Older Than They Look: Courtesy of the Sirius Island incident coupled with the Time Skip, they are all seven years younger than they're supposed to be and look.
  • Parental Abandonment. This extends to the guild as a whole but it really shows when the core team is focused upon.
  • Power-Up: They're all substantially weaker after the Time Skip, even weaker than Max, but take a massive level in badass when Ultear helps them achieve "Second Origin", activated by Ultear's Arc of Time, which gives them access to their latent magical reserves and effectively doubles their power.
  • Three Plus Two: As mentioned above; Natsu, Happy & Lucy are the three, Gray & Erza are the two.
  • Took a Level in Badass: There's no doubt they get more and more badass as the story progresses, but all the levels they obtain are instantaneously doubled when they unlock their "Second Origin". It lets Natsu single-handedly beat Dragon Forced-powered, Unison Raid-using Sting and Rogue without having to do the same, and lets Erza use her Infinity+1 Sword on Minerva.
  • Two Girls to a Team: The series mostly played this straight, with Lucy and Erza as the two girls to Natsu, Gray, and Happy, making the ratio 3:2 in favor of the guys... Unless you don't count Happy, the nonhuman, which makes it equal. Even if you do count Happy, Wendy coming into the picture tips the ratio in favor of the girls, since she brings Carla, another nonhuman, with her.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: Natsu and Gray. Occasionally Natsu and Erza. Happy and Lucy have shades of it as well.

    Natsu Dragneel
Affiliation: Fairy Tail
Magic: Dragon Slayer Magic (Fire Dragon Slayer Magic, Dragon Force, Lightning-Flame Dragon Mode), Transformation Magic
Weapons/Equipment: Sealed Flame Blade (in Edolas)
Guild Mark: Right Shoulder (Red)

The main male protagonist of the series, also known as "Salamander". He was raised by the dragon Igneel to become the Fire Dragon Slayer, giving him the power to breathe, attack with, defend against, and even eat fire. He was abandoned after Igneel mysteriously disappeared on July 7, 777, seven years before the series begins. He has since joined Fairy Tail in the hopes of reuniting with Igneel and finding out what happened. He's generally regarded as Fairy Tail's problem child, but no one is more loyal to the guild than he is.

Voiced by: Tetsuya Kakihara (JP), MAKO (JP - young), Todd Haberkorn (EN), Luci Christian (EN - young)

  • Adaptation Dye-Job: He has redder hair in the manga.
  • Almighty Janitor: He's almost always the one to beat the arc's Arc Villain, and even though Erza outranks him, she's admitted a few times that he's at least her equal, if not stronger. Justified in that S-Class requires more than just fighting ability; Natsu is very impulsive and frequently gets in over his head.
    • He is given the chance to escape this during the S-Class promotion exam, though that chance is ruined after the exam is interrupted and ultimately canceled thanks to Grimoire Heart.
  • Attack! Attack! Attack!: Natsu isn't one to hold back in a fight and he doesn't have many defensive abilities either.
  • Badass: The Hero of Fairy Tail, rarely loses a serious fight, and takes down the Big Bad in most arcs.
    • Badass Adorable: Admit it. He's hyperactive, optimistic and a protective sweetheart towards Lucy (though he cares about his other guildmates).
    • Badass Longcoat: In the first episode/chapter.
  • Battle Aura: When Natsu's emotions are at their peak in the midst of battle, his enemy can see the image of Igneel overlapping him. More normally, his flames can give him the appearance of this as well.
  • Berserk Button: As a firm believer in the modern concept of True Companions, you had better hope Natsu never catches wind of you betraying your own. He also has a lot of pride in his guild, similar to how Luffy hates tarnishing the pirate flag.
    • Harming any of his guildmates, especially Lucy, will bring down his fiery-lightning wrath.
  • The Berserker: Holy shit.
  • Berserker Tears: After he sees Future Rogue kill Future Lucy and plan to do the same with Present Lucy. No one takes away Lucy's future and gets away with it.
  • Big Brother Mentor: Because Fairy Tail sees its members as a giant family Wendy sees him in this light, learning how to use her magic for combat and use Dragon Force from him. She admits that the only reason she went to stop Orcaion Seis is because she really wanted to meet him.
  • Big Eater: Often combines this with his fire proof nature to eat his enemies attacks
  • Bishonen Line: His Dragon Force has gained more scales each time he's used it, eventually he even gains horns made of fire.
  • Blazing Inferno Hellfire Sauce: One of his many weapons in the second OVA.
  • Breath Weapon: The ever-classic fire breath.
  • Broke Your Arm Punching Out Cthulhu: With Laxus' magic power added to his own, he lands the final blow on Hades. He then falls down, completely out of magic power and too sore to move at all, and watches helplessly as Hades gets back up and goes One-Winged Angel.
    • Pretty much every time he uses Dragon Force it's to beat the tar out of a Big Bad but he usually ends up out of commission for a week with a nasty case of food poisoning
  • Burning with Anger: Quite often.
  • Butt Monkey: Of all people, he's one in the Eclipse Spirit arc, including getting sent flying multiple times.
  • Calling Your Attacks: Standard for the series and for Shonen protagonists.
  • Catch Phrase: "I'm all fired up"—which he says in basically every fight he's in.
  • Charles Atlas Superpower: In one omake, it is shown that he can uproot an entire tree by himself.
  • Chaste Hero: Gradually subverted over the Time Skip, where he begins noticing the ladies more and more. He even tries to peep at them in the hot springs.
  • Childhood Friend Romance: Apparently had this with Lisanna before she was killed some time before the series began. Later she's revealed in the Edolas arc to be alive after all, and she gives no shortage of affection to him once they are reunited for real. However, this has been subverted because ever since their reunion they haven't interacted at all.
    • The anime plays things up even more, including their interactions with each other post-reunion. It's clear the anime developers are pro-NaLi.
  • Clothing Damage: Not that he wore much to begin with...
  • Cloudcuckoolander: Doesn't seem to understand why Lucy would be annoyed with him peeking at her in the shower, among other things.
  • Covert Pervert: Wanted to peek at Lucy while she was in the shower, has a habit of hiding in her bed, and in the first OVA, tried to peek at the girls swimming, only to find Makarov swimming.
  • Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass: He doesn't seem very intelligent, but he is a genius in a fight, constantly improvising new ways to beat tougher oponnents.
  • Deadly Upgrade: Eating any kind of magic besides fire, such as Etherion, activates "Dragon Force", making him far more powerful, but with severe after-effects. Activating it more naturally gets rid of the after-effects.
    • Laxus 'gave' Natsu lightning, which although drained him at the time is permanent, making Natsu that much more destructive
    • He manages to activate his Dragon Force on his own during chapter 411
  • Deadpan Snarker: In the earliest chapters of the manga, he has a few funny snark moments with Lucy, who he treats more like an annoying newcomer. Once Lucy becomes more acclimatized to Fairy Tail, Natsu and Lucy's roles are switched.
    • He has more moments of snark in Funimation's dub.
  • Determinator: While a typical Fairy Tail trait, Natsu takes this to some rather extreme levels. Eventually, Gildarts calls him out on this because it will get Natsu killed if he keeps it up.
  • Designated Villain: Invoked in order to help Mystogan unite Edolas after everyone starts freaking out over what they think to be The End of the World as We Know It.
  • "Do It Yourself" Theme Tune: His seiyuu sings the opening of the OVAs
  • Dragon Rider: In the battle against Future Rogue, he rides Atlas Flame.
  • Exactly What It Says on the Tin: Dragon Slayer magic. It can supposedly slay dragons. Not that we doubt it, seeing what Natsu can do. Oddly, he was taught this magic by a dragon, Igneel.
  • Expy: Take Haru Glory, swap the sword for fire powers, turn Boisterous Bruiser Up to Eleven until it becomes Hot-Blooded, and replace "I need to find my dad" with "I need to find the dragon who is more or less my dad". Basically speaking, it's turning Spring into Summer.
    • His fighting style and appearance are also similar to Let.
  • Extreme Omnivore: While it's supposedly natural for him to try to eat fire, he has eaten a burning piece of paper, molten metal, lightning, and Etherion. The latter two have side effects that show that actually being an Extreme Omnivore is a bad idea for Natsu.
  • Fashionable Asymmetry: Post-Time Skip, at least until halfway through the Grand Magic Games arc.
  • Fearless Fool: However, thanks to his fight with Gildarts, Gildarts teaches him a much-needed lesson on feeling fear, which he takes to heart.
  • Feed It with Fire: Regains stamina from eating any flames he did not generate himself.
  • Fiery Redhead: His hair is more pink than red, but he's the most Hot-Blooded character in the team.
  • Fiery Salamander: Obviously, his Animal Motifs.
  • Fireballs: Two of his techniques, specifically, Fire Dragon's Roar and, in the anime, Fire Dragon's Brilliant Flame make use of this.
  • Friend to All Children: His interaction with Asuka in an omake hints at this.
  • Future Me Scares Me: Used in practically the most literal sense possible in the third OVA. He claims to have met some kind of maniac and ended up getting a scar on his neck was he was a kid, which has forever traumatized him. Said maniac was actually his present self who was sent back in time and disguised beyond recognition, and was actually beating his past self up because he lost to Gray in a fight. Past!Natsu ended up scratching his own neck in the process.
  • Glowing Eyes of Doom: Whenever he is pissed, his faced becomes shadowed while his eyes glow red.
  • Goal in Life: To find Igneel, which finally comes true after 14 years.
  • The Hero: Lucy's The Protagonist and Erza's The Leader, but Natsu is the traditional hero, especially on Fairy Tail's team in the Grand Magic Games arc.
  • Heroic RROD: Natsu normally eats fire to keep his strength up in battle. But he achieves an even higher form of power called "Dragon Force" when he eats magical substances that contain multiple elements other than fire, such as Etherion. Once the effects wear off, he falls sick for up to a few days at a time.
  • Hot-Blooded: His fire magic feeds on his emotions, so it's only natural.
  • Idiot Hero: Subverted. He's frequently shown to be quite intelligent, but the combination of being Hot-Blooded, raised by a dragon, and spending most of his time in a guild full of wizards who sometimes have a strange way of viewing the world means that he can across as one rather frequently. He also has some problems with the idea of "think before you act". He is, however, often the first to notice if something's off because he is one of the more perceptive characters and has keen senses (particularly smell).
  • I Hate Past Me: In the third OVA, he beats his past self up because he lost to Gray in a fight.
  • Image Song: Blaze Up, Kizuna Darou, and Eternal Fellows. Itsumo Zenkaida is a duet with Happy.
  • Incendiary Exponent: His spice of choice for his food is fire itself.
  • Infernal Retaliation/No Sell: Any time anyone tries to shoot fire at him. Totomaru is so far the only one to figure out how to turn the tables on him, when he shoots fire that smells (and tastes) like burning garbage.
    • Inverted against Zancrow. He can eat Natsu's flames, but Natsu can't eat his. At first.
  • I Will Find You: To Igneel. Also in the anime, he promised Lisanna to find her if she ever went missing.
  • Keet: Small in comparison to rivals Gray, Gajeel, and Laxus, hyperactive and impulsive, and most definitely loud.
  • Kung-Fu Wizard: To the dismay of a pair of regular martial artists.
  • Large Ham: Constantly shouting.
  • Leeroy Jenkins: Is impatient and overly-enthusiastic, so he likes to chase off the enemies on his own.
  • Lightning Bruiser: While not the fastest in the guild, he's quick and packs a punch. However, thats only when gets serious.
  • Make Me Wanna Shout: while his Fire Dragon's Roar doesn't count he attacks Cobra by giving an actual dragon's roar
  • Man Child: Assuming he's over seventeen.
  • Manly Tears: When Erza is about to sacrifice herself and after he finally sees Igneel again.
  • Meaningful Name: Natsu means summer, hence his element.
  • Mental World: Considering the magma land Igneel resided in was actually in Natsu himself, looks like this trope applies?
  • Me's a Crowd: He gets turned into an army of miniature versions of himself (all of whom even bicker with each other) as the result of one of Gildarts's attacks.
  • Mood Whiplash: Goes from crying Manly Tears to being incredibly angry and demanding answers after Igneel's reappearance. Given the circumstances, you can hardly blame him.
  • Mr. Fanservice: His usual attire consists of a waistcoat that always exposes his toned and muscular body, not to mention how many times he gets rid of it and evolves into a Shirtless Scene.
  • Mysterious Past: Nothing is really known about his past before he met Igneel or how Igneel even found him. More questions also arise from the fact that Zeref knows him but Natsu doesn't.
  • Nice Mean And In Between: The In-Between (Hot-Blooded, destructive, and reckless) of Fairy Tail's first-generation Dragon Slayers.
  • Normally, I Would Be Dead Now: Takes many deadly attacks from enemies, only to overpower them with sheer tenacity.
  • The Nose Knows: Like all dragon slayers, he has a very keen sense of smell.
  • No Shirt, Long Jacket: His trademark vest doesn't cover much, though he actually does wear shirts and jackets from time to time. Justified in that he doesn't get cold due to his magic.
  • No Social Skills: At first, all he was intersted in was fighting. He slowly gets better after the Time Skip.
  • OOC Is Serious Business: At first he doesn't want help against Marde Guile, it becomes serious when he asks Sting and Rogue to help him.
  • Parental Abandonment: In search of Igneel since he disappeared. Also the question of why he was being raised by a dragon to begin with has yet to come up
  • Person of Mass Destruction: Destroys a town in his very first appearance, and everything around him in general. All Fairy Tail wizards do this, but he is by far the worst.
    • Uses this to his advantage at the climax of the Tower of Heaven arc: the Big Bad completely outclasses him so he decides to just destroy the mile tall crystal he needs for his plans, while lampshading that he's the most destructive wizard in Fairy Tail
  • Playing with Fire: His magic's main ability.
  • Raised by a Dragon: He is rather ignorant of how the real world works sometimes, mostly in the "girls" department, due to his upbringing by Igneel.
  • Ramming Always Works: Fire Dragon's Sword Edge. In fact, this is usually his default strategy.
  • Rapidfire Fisticuffs: His Guren Karyū Ken (Crimson Lotus: Fire Dragon's Fist)
  • Red Baron: "Salamander". That's what some of his enemies who are familiar with him call him.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: When he gets dangerous.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: With Gray the ice-wizard. Guess which one's which. Forms one with Gajeel as well.
  • Rocket Punch: Fire Dragon's Elbow forms a jet booster at said elbow, driving the fist forward with extreme force. Notable for being just about the only non-mechanical example in existence.
  • Running Gag: His severe motion sickness.
    • Turns into Foreshadowing when it turns out that Rouge, Sting and post-time skip Gajeel all have this too... Sting thinks it's a mark of a true Dragon Slayer.
  • Scarf of Asskicking: One of his trademarks. He received it from Igneel, and he is very attached to it.
  • Scars Are Forever: Has one on his neck. According to the third OVA, he accidentally scratched himself as a child while trying to fend off his future (i.e. present) self).
  • Screaming Warrior: Shounen protagonist, what do you expect?
  • Screw Destiny: After Rogue states that he has to kill Lucy because she will somehow prevent the gates to the Eclipse Cannon to use it against the dragons that threaten to ravage the kingdom, Natsu declares that he will burn that fate away and protect Lucy.
  • Sealed Good in a Can: Doubles as Sealed Badass in a Can as Igneel was always inside of Natsu ever since he left.
  • Shameful Strip: He's stripped naked when he's captured by Tartarus.
  • Ship Tease: Notably with Lucy, Lisanna and even Erza on occasion.
  • Shock and Awe: After Laxus transfers his magic power to Natsu during their battle against Hades. From that point onward, Natsu is able to activate "Lightning-Flame Dragon Mode", which lets him combine electrical attacks with his fire attacks.
  • Shut Up, Hannibal!: When he punches Jellal for ranting about how Simon's Heroic Sacrifice was futile in its efforts to save him and Erza.
  • Signature Move: Fire Dragon's Iron Fist and Crimson Lotus Blade (which later becomes electrified thanks to his power up)
  • Slasher Smile: He sports this on a occasions.
  • Sleep Cute: Lampshaded by Lucy.
  • Spotlight-Stealing Squad: While YMMV on if Natsu or Lucy is the main character, Natsu often ends up somehow taking the spotlight away from other characters in their own story arcs. Whats unusual is that other character hand the spotlight. In the Tower of Heaven Arc, he fights Jellal for example, after making a promise to Simon, and in the Sirus Island Arc, he battles Hades because Laxus tells him too.
  • Spirited Competitor: Definitely qualifies, seeing how he loves to pick fights with Erza and Gildarts. He gets to fight the latter during the Sirius Island arc, which makes him ecstatic.
  • Super Mode: Dragon Force and later Lightning-Fire Dragon Mode.
  • Tears of Fear: He breaks down after only being glared at by Gildarts during the Sirius Island arc.
  • The Battle Didn't Count: Said towards Laxus as he had to use outside help (Gajeel) to beat him. Laxus, by this point having mellowed out, agrees.
  • Theme Naming: Hiro Mashima's lead always gets a season-based name. His means "summer".
  • Trash of the Titans: His house.
  • True Companions: He is a dead-serious believer in this.
  • Tsundere: When he was a child, he acted like this towards Lisanna sometimes.
  • Tsurime Eyes: One of Gray's many insulting nicknames for him.
  • Unstoppable Rage: His magic increases in strength with the strength of his emotions; getting him entirely pissed off is not the best idea.
  • Use Your Head: He did it once or twice.
    • He has two headbutt attacks. They are not normal, he flies towards the enemy while he's wreathed in flames. Karyu no Kenkaku and Shiranui Gata: Guren Hōō Ken.
  • Vague Age: He's one of the few members of the guild whose age is unknown. He's likely somewhere between 17 and 19.
    • Adding to the confusion was Freed's barriers during the Fighting Festival arc, which prevented passage of anyone who was either Taken for Granite (like the guild's girls that Evergreen had petrified) or over the age of 80 (which trapped Makarov). Natsu and Gajeel could't pass through either, and they certainly weren't petrified though Word of God has stated that neither Natsu or Gajeel are over 80.
      • Later revealed that Igneel, who is well over 400 years old, was inside of Natsu this whole time, finally explaining why Natsu couldn't pass through the barrier.
  • Volleying Insults: Usually with Gray.
  • Weaksauce Weakness: His motion sickness, which is a weakness shared by all Dragon Slayers when their magic reaches a certain stage of development. It is sensitive enough to activate if a human being carries him, or if he is on a stationary raft. Only traveling by Happy seems to be able to circumvent this—also that one Legion in Edolas—his reason being he considers Happy and the Legion to be friends, not transportation.
  • Wham Line: After he successfully damages one of Future Rogue's dragons, something even Makarov was unable to do.
Natsu: "It's called Dragon Slaying magic for a reason! Seven dragons! Seven Dragon Slayers!"
  • When All You Have Is a Hammer: Many of his battles have him trying to figure out how to beat an opponent who can counter his usual style, and he ends up winning by new applications of the same style. Noticeably, he can use other spells, such as transformation magic as shown in an omake chapter—he just doesn't.
  • The Worf Effect: He often struggles/loses against the Arc Villain's underlings and extremely powerful wizards, thus keeping him from becoming an Invincible Hero, most notably against Fukurou and Aria. Laxus and Erza have also beaten him a few times. This may be because he doesn't fight quite as seriously as he should against these guys, but when much more is on the line, which especially happens against an arc's Big Bad, that's when he gets serious.
    • More often then not the Elite Mooks exploit a weakness of his (travel sickness or recklessness) or are simply better suited to fighting him (Zancrow) while he fights a Big Bad that has been weakened by his friends and gets a nifty power-up couretesy of eating something he probably shouldn't have eaten.
      • Additionally, Natsu often treats his fights with technically inferior opponents more as games than real, actively-threatening encounters. Since his magic power is directly related to how mad or emotional he is, he often isn't in the proper mood until suitably threatened.
  • Would Hit a Girl: After all, Natsu is a Spirited Competitor and if he thinks one of his rivals can give him a good battle, he probably doesn't even notice their gender. For example, Erza, the strongest female member of Fairy Tail, is the person he has probably challenged to a fight the most times. It makes perfect sense considering Natsu grew up alongside women like "The Demon" Mirajane and "Titania" Erza.
  • Wreathed in Flames: His Flames of Emotion.
  • You Gotta Have Pink Hair: Though it's actually an Adaptation Dye-Job, as in the manga his hair is a slightly duller, redder color (but still pink).
  • You Wouldn't Like Me When I'm Angry: You really wouldn't. If Natsu is taking a fight serious, he's probably really pissed.
  • Zero-Approval Gambit: Passes himself off as the Great Demon Lord Dragneel responsible for the loss of magic in Edolas, which causes its residents to mistake it for the end of the world, all so that Mystogan can defeat him and avert a mass panic.

    Lucy Heartfilia
Affiliation: Fairy Tail
Magic: Celestial Spirit Magic, Unison Raid, Urano Metria, Water Magic
Weapons/Equipment: Whip, Fleuve d'étoiles, Gale-Force Reading Glasses
Guild Mark: Back of Right Hand (Pink)

The main female protagonist of the series. She is a celestial wizard who uses magic keys to summon spirits from another world. She was born into a wealthy family, but ran away from home to join Fairy Tail. She gets her wish when she bumps into Natsu at the start of the series, though her new guild's insane antics prove to be more than she can handle at times.

Voiced by: Aya Hirano (JP), Cherami Leigh (EN)

  • Action Girl: No, really. She actually wins most of her fights. She's just not as itching to fight as some other folks are. She also relies less on her celestial spirits and more on her agility and whip than you might expect.
  • Adult Fear: During her battle with Flare Corona, Flare uses Asuka Connell as a hostage and tells Lucy not to do anything lest something happens to the little girl.
  • Allergic to Love
  • All Up To You: The only member of Fairy Tail, minus an injured Wendy, to not be caught by Marde's Plutogrim.
  • Apocalypse Maiden: Zig-Zagged. She is singled out for Arcadios' Eclipse Plan in the Grand Magic Games arc, but according to Arcadios, it entails using all twelve Zodiac keys to open a gateway to the past and kill Zeref before he became immortal. Then it turns out that as long as she's alive, she will somehow prevent the gates to the Eclipse Cannon to use it against the dragons that threaten to ravage the kingdom. And then it turns out that Eclipse is the thing that brought the whole world to ruins in the first place. And she's the only one that can stop the destruction of the world, basically meaning that she is the key to protecting the world itself.
    • Played straight in the Key of the Starry Heavens filler arc, where she's used to trigger a doomsday device due to her being a celestial wizard.
  • Ascended Fangirl: From a big fangirl of Fairy Tail to a member in good standing and one of those who could qualify as The Heart of the guild (in the anime) in just half a year. Not bad at all for a rookie wizard, even if her combat ability does not compare well to some of those who have been in the guild since their childhood.
  • Badass: Not as overwhelmingly powerful as her comrades, but becomes a very competent fighter over the course of the series. Among other feats of badassery, she survives a vicious attack from Gajeel, performs at least two Unison Raids when even one is unlikely to be achieved in a mage's lifetime, defeats an entire minor guild, and manages to kill Jackal in the Tartarus arc.
    • Badass Adorable: A fangirl of Fairy Tail who gets a bit star-struck.
    • Badass Bookworm: She's pretty smart, the Daybreak arc being a good example. Also, she's a writer. She was also given the task of figuring out the collected maps of the Sky Labyrinth during the Great Magic Tournament.
    • Badass on Paper: Her list of accomplishments is actually quite impressive. She claims most of it is exaggerated.
  • Bare Your Midriff: Primarily her attire after Sirius Island.
  • Bat Deduction: She somehow correctly deduces where Master Mavis' grave is located in the Sirius Island arc, despite the fact that her logic involves a Wiki Walk through a series of extremely loosely related words (at one point she claims it is suspicious that the word "demise" has two e's).
  • Bathing Beauty: Constantly.
  • Bathtub Bonding: With Cana.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Saves Love & Lucky from a Dark Guild all by herself and later summons the Celestial Spirit King, destroying Plutogrim and freeing Fairy Tail from Alegria.
  • Break the Cutie: Often during the Grand Magic Games arc. Every antagonistic woman on any of the other teams seems to be out to get her.
    • During the Tartaros arc, she was traumatized after losing Aquarius via Heroic Sacrifice.
  • Brown Eyes: A kind, down to earth person with big, brown eyes.
  • Butt Monkey: Prior to Character Development. Though she does tend to get knocked around by her guildmates from time to time.
  • Calling the Old Man Out: When she finds out he had hired Phantom Lord to bring her home, nearly getting her guild destroyed in the process. Done again later when he reappears bankrupt and demands 100,000 Jewel from her, only to later realize he was just asking for money for a carriage ride to work and grossly overestimated the cost.
  • Cat Girl: In the Fairy Hills and the fourth OVA.
  • Celibate Heroine: So far, though mostly it just seems like the right romance hasn't presented itself to her, rather than being opposed to the idea as a whole.
    • While she doesn't actively seek out romance, she is a sucker for it, judging from the few times Natsu has been inadvertently romantic with her, she wouldn't pass up the opportunity.
  • Character Development: See Took a Level in Kindness.
  • Character Tics: Tends to puff up her cheeks when she is annoyed or impatient.
  • The Chick: Arguably has the least raw power out of the human members of Team Natsu, treats her spirits exceptionally well, doesn't like fighting, and is very caring towards those she meets.
  • Clothing Damage: Often.
  • Conservation of Ninjutsu: Defeats much of the entire Naked Mummy guild by herself.
  • Cool Keys: How she opens the gates to the Celestial Spirit World.
  • Cosplay Otaku Girl: The magical world views her as this.
  • Damsel in Distress: During the Phantom Lord arc. Noticeably, she's rescued rather quickly.
  • Damsel out of Distress: It's not easy feat to kidnap her or restrain her and she might get out before her guild mates arrive to save her.
  • Dangerously Short Skirt: She is the series main source of Fanservice.
  • Discard and Draw: One chapter after she loses her ability to summon Aquarius, the Spirit King gives her the former's water powers.
  • "Do It Yourself" Theme Tune: Her seiyuu sings the OVA's ending.
  • Even the Girls Want Her: In the anime, Levy wouldn't mind seeing her butt. Erza as well.
  • Expy: To Elie from Rave Master, particularly in terms of her clothing.
  • Fashionable Asymmetry: But just with her hair.
  • Friend to All Living Things: The celestial spirits often make note of how kind she is to them, even going so far as to think of them as her fellow human beings, due to the rather harsh treatment they often get from other summoners. At least four different Zodiac spirits have sought her out because their original contracts were broken and they knew how kind she is.
  • Girlish Pigtails: Almost always after she changes her clothes. Becomes permanent after returning from Sirius Island. She changes her hair back during the Magic Games.
  • Gotta Catch 'Em All: Not in the traditional sense, but out of the (probable) thousands and thousands of summoning keys there are, only twelve of them are "Golden Celestial Keys." So far, she has ten of them, the only ones she doesn't own being Libra and Pisces. The interesting thing about this is, she has three when the series starts, and only actively seeks out one. The rest ask to join her. However, when Yukino tries to give her the keys, she refuses them.
  • Gratuitous French: Her "Fleuve d'étoiles" whip's name means "River of Stars".
  • Groin Attack: Pulls this on Jose. He understandably becomes upset about it.
  • Hair Decorations: She usually has a ribbon or a bow in her hair.
  • Hair of Gold, Heart of Gold: One of the kindest characters in the series.
  • He Is Not My Boyfriend: To Loke and Natsu.
  • Help Yourself In The Past: In the third OVA, Lucy goes back in time with her friends and stops a runaway horse-drawn carriage with a little girl inside. Unbeknownst to her, the little girl is her past self, who never notices it was her future self who saved her. The only glimpse she gets of her savior is the Fairy Tail guildmark on her hand, ultimately inspiring Lucy to join Fairy Tail in the first place, and perhaps even to put the mark on her own hand.
  • Heroic BSOD: After breaking Aquarius' key to summon the Spirit King, thus permanently losing the ability to summon said spirit, all she can do is lay on the ground and clutch what's left of Aquarius' key for dear life, crying her poor heart out. She doesn't even seem to notice she's being attacked until after a shield of water springs up out of nowhere.
  • Heroic Self-Deprecation: Lucy isn't nearly as confident in her fighting abilities as she should be, though she does manage to get over any doubts once the fighting actually starts.
  • Hollywood Dateless: Aquarius constantly teases her about her lack of a boyfriend.
  • Hotter and Sexier: Lucy had always been a Ms. Fanservice in the series, but this becomes more obvious after the time-skip, where she was given skimpier clothes as her regular attire and a hairstyle that makes her look sexier as well. The Art Evolution helps a lot too.
  • Image Song: Open the Gate and Happy Holiday.
  • Infinity+1 Sword: Summoning the Celestial Spirit King, which can only be done by someone who can summon three Celestial Spirits at once, an act itself that requires a very large amount of magic power.
  • Informed Attribute: Almost all of the female cast have the same breast size, Lucy included. But what makes it fits this trope is that Lucy's breasts are the only ones mentioned, most parodied and regarded as the biggest of all in-universe for some reason.
  • Instant Cosplay Surprise: A Running Gag is that she often ends up in a cosplay outfit at a most unfortunate moment.
  • Invisible Streaker: In a filler episode. When she finally gets to the guild to ask for help, Natsu, who finds her by following her scent, finds a much more standard area to grab her.
  • Just Friends: Poor Lucy has it hard. Mirajane teases Lucy about either being with Natsu or Gray in an omake, Juvia is convinced that Lucy is after Gray, and Happy teases Lucy about being with Loke during the Fantasia arc. Ironically, she's a Celibate Heroine.
  • Kamehame Hadoken/Wave Motion Gun: Urano Metria.
  • Kick Chick: "Lucy KICK!!!" and "Lucy Fire"
  • Lonely Rich Kid: Her backstory. Also why she ran away from home.
  • Losing a Shoe in the Struggle: Happens to almost everyone in the series, but Lucy takes it Up to Eleven. Ever since the Edolas arc, Lucy seems to lose her shoes at least once per arc. In both the Edolas and Grand Magic Games arcs she gets a new pair afterwards, only to lose those too. Oddly enough, she's even shown barefoot on the cover of Volume 27, even though that arc is the only one where she manages to keep her shoes.
  • Love Revelation Epiphany: When Mirajane gets into Lucy's head the idea that Natsu might like her, Lucy suddenly becomes very nervous around him and even starts to fantasize about a relationship with him. When she thinks he is going to confess, she decides to turn him down, yet dolls herself up. After Natsu reveals he only wanted to see Lucy because he needed Virgo to dig a hole, Lucy becomes disappointed and slaps him.
  • Made of Iron: She might not be as able to dish out damage as the other members of her Five-Man Band, but holy hell, can she take it. Since joining Fairy Tail, she's been beaten, strangled, and humiliated by people far stronger than her—the latest of which being not one, but two brutal beatdowns in the Grand Magic Games—and she just keeps coming back for more.
  • Making a Splash: Whenever she summons Aquarius, though it's more like a tsunami than a splash...
    • She personally gains Aquarius's water powers courtesy of the Spirit King after summoning him by breaking Aquarius' key, allowing her to No Sell Jackal's curse.
  • Male Gaze: In the anime, when Gemini-Lucy seduces Taurus, we see the other part of Lucy that can be used for Fanservice.
  • Meaningful Name: Arguably. Lucy means "light bringer," and there have been times when she's lived up to the spirit of her name.
  • Ms. Fanservice: A large-breasted blonde who consistently wears skimpy outfits, carries a whip, is frequently subject to Clothing Damage, almost always fights other women, is often depicted in cosplay outfits and sometimes maid costumes, is occasionally captured and tied up, and is commonly drawn from provocative angles or with emphasis on suggestive body parts, most recently her feet. Basically, think of a form of Fetish. Lucy either embodies it or has had or will have it happen to her, much to her great embarrassment (almost) every time.
  • Most Writers Are Writers: She's writing a book, though she claims to be an amateur. She lets Levy read it due to her own book interests.
    • She also writes a 'journal' about her adventures with the guild, in the form of letters to her Missing Mom.
  • My Friends... and Zoidberg: She's treated this way occasionally by some members of the guild, though this is primarily Played for Laughs just in comedy scenes. When things actually get serious, the guild is more than willing to go to bat for Lucy, as they have shown multiple times. Natsu can get especially protective of her, most notably if she is hurt or made to cry.
  • My Future Self and Me: She meets her future self who came to warn everyone about a Bad Future. Her future self ends up pulling a Taking the Bullet to save her from future Rogue and dies in her arms.
  • Naked People Are Funny: Several times to varying degrees, but it's especially funny when a naked Lucy is thrown through the sky and smack into Natsu.
  • Narrator: She plays this role from time to time in the manga, with rectangular boxes exposing her point of view on the story and anticipating important events.
  • Never Got to Say Goodbye: With her father. Particularly tragic in this instance, as he had really cleaned up his act before his death and tried to be a better father even while she was missing for seven years. Plus, even though she does make amends and leave on good terms with him the last time they meet, Lucy never has the chance to actually tell him she loves him until after reading his last letter to her.
  • Nice Girl: She is a loyal friend in the face of danger like all Fairy Tail members, but she's generally also one of the kinder and gentler members in day-to-day life, which is probably why she quickly became well-liked in the guild. She provides a bit of a contrast between Natsu's hot-blooded recklessness, Gray's standoffish-ness, and Erza's stern leadership. Not that she's a saint - it's possible to piss her off, just like with everybody else, and at the very beginning of the series, she was a bit vain and slightly petty.
    • In the Oracion Seis arc, she declared that she'd give her life to see her Celestial Spirits happy. In the first episode of the Eclipse Celestial Spirits arc, she wore herself out by summoning each of her spirits to grant them a wish. Aquarius chides her for doing so, after she fell asleep from exhaustion.
  • Not So Above It All: She has her moments. Her first moment is before Erza actually makes an appearance.
  • Ojou: She comes from a very wealthy family and was raised to be a proper lady.
  • Only Sane Woman: Though unlike most examples, she enjoys the sheer wackiness of her guild once she gets used to it. Most of the time, anyways.
  • Overshadowed by Awesome: Gets worse and worse over time until poor Lucy has been all but a passenger during the Tartaros arc while in earlier arcs she at least had the designated girl fight.
    • Until she ends up summoning the Celestial Spirit King, who destroys the Cube in its Plutogrim form with one attack. In fact, before she summoned the Spirit King, she was able to hold out admirably against three Tartaros demons, two of whom are members of the 9 Demon Gates, and flat-out defeats one of them.
  • Panty Shot: Not as often as you'd think, but it does happen.
  • Parental Abandonment: Her mom died seven years before the start of the story. Now, seven years after the story begins, her father has also died.
  • Pimped-Out Dress: During the Fantasia parade, she wears a pink dress with a frilled skirt, a bodice bodice trimmed with white fur, and a pink bow on the bodice.
  • Plucky Girl: She's a lot braver and tougher than people give her credit for.
  • The Power of Love: Loke claims this is why their bond is strong enough that he can summon himself without using up her magic power. She denies anything of the sort.
    • Interestingly enough, this is also her interpretation of "The One Magic" that Hades seeks.
  • Power Tattoo: Acquiring Aquarius' water magic also gave Lucy a tattoo similar to Aquarius' across her collarbone.
  • Proud Beauty: She's proud of her good looks and is annoyed about how her "feminine wiles" never work to distract men.
  • Reluctant Fanservice Girl: Well most of the time.
  • The Runaway: Types 1 and 2 combined. Her father is none too pleased, though Fairy Tail is rather fond of her and refuses to let her leave, even if they get killed protecting her.
  • Running Gag: She usually finds someone waiting for her when she enters her house/a room in her house.
    • A minor one involves her walking along the edge of the sidewalk near a river and being told by a fisherman that its dangerous. She nearly falls in a couple of times.
    • A third one, relatively subtle, is that she tends to call blatant non-humans "persons", implying she thinks they are humans. She has done it with rabbits, dragons and Stellar Spirits among others (though in the latter case, it's also a sweet moment as the said spirits were used to being looked down upon as if they were objects without feelings).
  • Screw the Rules, I'm Doing What's Right: Has a tendency to do this. Early on she does this, and then complains when Natsu pulls a Screw the Money, I Have Rules! when they are offered the reward they would've gotten anyways. Later on, she manages to convince the Celestial Spirit King that some rules are too harsh if they would allow an innocent person to die.
  • Secretly Wealthy: Formerly. Her family lost all their fortune.
  • She's Got Legs: Rare is the occasion that Lucy is seen in long pants; it's usually a skirt or shorts.
  • Ship Tease: With Natsu, Gray and Loke.
    • Taken Up to Eleven with Natsu in the fourth OVA.
      • Even moreso in a recent omake chapter when Asuka asks if she and Natsu kiss; she gets EXTREMELY embarrassed about the whole conversation.
  • Shorttank: At the start of the series. Nowadays, when Team Natsu actually has more female members than males (as noted at the Two Girls to a Team entry), she doesn't really fill this role anymore. Unless if you count her, Natsu and Happy as the absolutely most important members since they founded the team.
  • Shout-Out: She gets her name from The Beatles song "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds".
  • Shower of Angst: In the Grand Magic Games arc, after getting her magic drained by Obra during her battle with Flare and getting laughed at by an entire audience of people.
  • Shrouded in Myth: Many of Team Natsu's more spectacular deeds end up as being blamed solely on Lucy, and word gets out before she can shift the credit to someone else. The more badass things she does do are mostly only known to the celestial spirits she summons, though her defeating Bickslow and Angel are known to a select few wizards.
  • Sleeves Are for Wimps: Most of her attire.
  • Spoiled Sweet: Though she had a very privileged upbringing, she is one of the most openly compassionate characters in the series.
  • Squishy Wizard: Usually subverted, since she does have some skill in combat. However, she is still very vulnerable in physical combat.
  • Straight Man: To Natsu.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: To her mother.
  • Summon Magic: She's a very great summoner, though her magic reserves are low so summoning multiple spirits in a fight is more tiring for her than other wizards. At least until she achieves Second Origin.
  • Supporting Protagonist: Arguably the main character despite Natsu's heroic tendencies.
  • Take Our Word for It: Apparently, Lucy's underwear is so sexy that it gets a Head-Tiltingly Kinky reaction from everyone who sees it, especially Erza.
  • Tareme Eyes: To reflect her warm, friendly nature.
  • The Tease: She even admits she puts effort into looking cute so she can be this.
  • Tender Tears: Often, and for good reason, as she usually ends up being singled out and relentlessly attacked by enemy guilds. The first time being when Fairy Tail went to war with Phantom Lord in her defense and won.
  • That Makes Me Feel Angry: Raven Tail greets Fairy Tail by hospitalizing Wendy and subjecting Gray to a humiliating defeat at the Grand Magic Games. Lucy is not cool with stuff like that.
  • Tomboy and Girly Girl: Girly Girl to Erza's Tomboy, though this is only be comparasion. In-universe, she is seen as a Shorttank.
  • Took a Level in Badass: She's a competent enough fighter to hold her own in a fight at the start of the series, but gradually becomes more badass with each spirit she obtains. Her levels also skyrocket a number of times:
    • She temporarily summons all her spirits at once to prove a point across to the almighty Celestial Spirit King in the Loke arc.
    • She gets her hands on the "Fleuve d'étoiles" whip in the Edolas arc, giving her all sorts of mobility.
    • As a result of her "Second Origin" release, she gains the ability to not only summon two of her strongest spirits at the same time without getting tired, but also to combine their attacks, allowing her to put her enemies on the ropes in ways she was never able to do before.
    • She's getting better in tactics as well. When she realizes that dismissing one of the spirits that Franmalth has absorbed will send him into the Spirit World, forcing him to release them from his body, she then screams that she's releasing Natsu, leading Franmalth to think he was another spirit and let him go as well. Cue Curb-Stomp Battle from Natsu.
    • She became truly badass after summoning the Spirit King, who was so enraged that Tartarus made Lucy suffer, he gifted her with Aquarius's water based magical powers and allowed her to fight for, arguably, the first time at a level that rival Natsu.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: It's subtle, but at the start of the series, she's something of a self-centered Jerk with a Heart of Gold who, while caring towards her spirits and friends, is more inclined to take jobs for the reward (mainly rent money) than actually helping people. Come the Grand Magic Games arc, when she's had plenty of experiences and collected ten of the twelve Zodiac keys, she becomes much more considerate of others. She even declines celestial wizard Yukino's offer to give Lucy the remaining two Zodiac keys until she feels Yukino is ready to part with them. In fact, Lucy lampshades that if she were like the way she was when she first joined Fairy Tail, she would have taken the keys without question, just for the sake of having all twelve.
  • Town Girls: The Neither to Wendy's Femme and Erza's Butch.
  • Tsundere: A bit of a Type B. Lucy's normally cute, flirty and light-hearted, but she can have a violent temper at times, especially when finding tresspassers in her house.
  • The Ugly Guy's Hot Daughter: Jude isn't very good looking. Lucy is.
  • Vapor Wear: Chapter 379 shows Lucy, occasionally at least, does not wear a bra.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: With Happy and Juvia.
  • Weak, but Skilled: She's not all that strong physically, but she has the tendency to put whatever tools she has at her disposal to good use, and her quick thinking and wits have saved her on more than one occasion.
  • Whip It Good: She carries a whip on her at all times in order to defend herself rather than using her spirits for the job instead.
    • During the Edolas arc, she receives the "Fleuve d'étoiles", a magical and extendable whip from Virgo, and shows that she can be quite awesome with it, even without a spirit at her side.
  • Woman in White: Her attire towards the end of the Sirius Island arc, courtesy of Virgo.
  • Wrestler in All of Us: Lucy finishes off Sherry with a clothesline during the Galuna Island arc.
  • Wreathed in Flames: Used by Natsu on Mr. Cursey with her hair attached to it to defeat Kain Hikaru.
  • Yaoi Fangirl: When Macao and Natsu have a moment, Lucy lets out a small grin. Happy calls her out on it.
  • Zettai Ryouiki: Usually after Virgo brings her clothes from the Celestial Spirit world. Becomes standard after returning from Sirius Island.

Affiliation: Fairy Tail
Magic: Aera
Guild Mark: Back (Green)

Natsu's animal partner, a happy-go-lucky talking blue cat who can grow wings and fly. Ever since Natsu hatched him from an egg he found, he's been inseparable from Natsu.

Voiced by: Rie Kugimiya (JP), Tia Ballard (EN)

    Gray Fullbuster
Affiliation: Fairy Tail
Magic: Maker Magic (Ice-Make: Static), Ice Magic, Unison Raid, Devil Slayer Magic (Ice Devil Slayer)
Guild Mark: Right Pectoral (Dark Blue)

A wizard whose magic, Ice-Make, lets him create ice and mold it into any form he desires. This magic is also the source of a fierce rivalry with Natsu, a fire wizard. He learned ice magic from the wizard Ur, who he also got his unhealthy stripping habit from. As a child, he tried taking vengence against Deliora, the demon that destroyed his hometown, but his overconfidence cost his teacher her life, and he's tried to remain level-headed ever since.

  • Accidental Pervert: Desperate to in any way stop Juvia's attack, he reaches out an freezes her... only to discover his hand on her breast.
  • Almighty Janitor: Like Natsu, he's much more powerful and skilled than his rank implies. The fact that he's not as prominent as either Erza or Natsu helps him, as opponents are often surprised at his abilities.
    • Gray is often depicted as Natsu's equal (at least until Natsu gets really angry) so is at least an S rank wizard by Fairy Tail standards (which are higher than other guilds)
  • Aww, Look! They Really Do Love Each Other: Despite apparently rejecting her after the Grand Magic Games, he has frequently had these moments with Juvia since. These include going back to dig a scarf she had made for him out of the snow or, perhaps most notably, her occupying a rather large portion of his thoughts when he was considering sacrificing himself in his fight against Silver.
  • Badass
  • Battle Strip: Loses his shirt most of the time.
  • BFG: His Ice Cannon.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Gray shot an ice arrow to stop Tempester from attacking a worn-out Gajeel.
  • Bloody Murder: Freezes his own blood in order to combat Ultear.
  • Body Horror: His demonification Super Mode makes it look like half his body is charred.
  • Boring but Practical: Ice Make is not by any means flashy, super powerful, even rare. Instead it's able to let Gray win because he has virtually the largest arsenal of abilities. To put this in perspective, Ultear and Lyon have stronger version's of Ice Make but they did not follow Ur's teachings and rely on their own style. They both lose because Gray follows Ur's style, and his creative mind allows him to trump them.
  • Characterization Marches On: He initially serves as The Rival to Natsu, and both are far more vitriolic towards each other in earlier chapters. Nowadays, they're equally quirky and rarely fight.
  • Chekhov's Skill: Gray is known for stripping almost bare in a matter of seconds. This comes in handy against Sugar Boy in the Edolas arc, when he slips out of his jacket to avoid being stabbed.
    • While Natsu and Erza's Magic is based on their physical strength, Ice Make is fueled by creativity; so when the three all get turned into kids by Doriate, Gray is the only one who can use his magic properly.
  • The Coats Are Off: When on mission or at the start off a fight, Gray usually wears a long-coat or a vest. But whenever Gray starts to get serious in a fight, he will, almost unconsciously, strip off whatever he is wearing and fight topless. Lampshaded during his fight with Rufus when the commentator pointed out that Gray stripping down meant he was finally going to get serious in the duel.
  • Covert Pervert: Usually a pretty level-headed and serious guy, but he can't help but offer to ice down Lucy's butt, gets distracted by Virgo's underwear, and in Chapter 244 is the only one to actually think "Wendy's naked only ten feet away from me". Additionally, in The Movie, when Lucy appears naked in front of him and Natsu, and Natsu comments that Gray's stripping habit could be contagious, his response is expressing thankfulness for developing the habit.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: Delivers one to Tempesta with his new magic.
  • A Day in the Limelight:
    • Galuna Island arc.
    • Hiro has said on his Twitter that he is planning to make Gray the main focus of the Tartaros arc along with Natsu - in the same vein as he was the main focus back in the Galuna Island arc, Erza in the Tower of Heaven arc, Wendy in the Oracion Seis arc, and so on.
  • Death Glare: In Chapter 390, he gives a spectacular one to his father, or rather the abomination possessing the corpse of his father.
  • Demon Slaying: His father Silver gives him his Ice Devil Slayer Magic when he passes on to defeat E.N.D.
  • Determinator: He's at least prepared to cut his own side open in order to win a fight, and then go fight someone a hundred times stronger while woozy from blood loss.
  • Exoticeye Designs: When he's about to use his Ice Devil Slayer Magic.
  • Expy: To Musica from Rave Master. Case in point, he manipulates a malleable element, and always wears a silver necklace (which also happens to look like the first Rave).
    • Filler seems to enjoy driving this point home. He does a Unison Raid with Juvia to combine their powers, which is basically the same thing as Silver Bond, which Musica does with Reina.
  • Fake Defector: In the anime-only Daphne filler arc.
  • Foreshadowing: Remember way back during Tower of Paradise when Gray froze Natsu's flames?? Flash forward to the Tartaros arc, we have a Demon Slayer who's actually capable of freezing a Dragon's flames. And it just so happens that that the Demon Slayer in question is Gray's father, who now has passed on his magic to his son.
  • Freak Out: Has a massive one when Doriate attacks him after turning him into a child, causing him to think he's Deliora and go into a crying fit. He gets better.
  • Genius Bruiser: Make-Magic is based on magical power and creativity, meaning one has to be relatively smart and observant to get the most usage out it. This is shown when he manages to make a rather intricate key out of ice having seen it once, at one point making what can only be described as "Unlimited Blade Works" and trouncing Doriate despite having much more limited power because he's smart enough to play off his surroundings.
    • Furthermore, Gray wins most of his battles with strategies. Natsu usually gets power-ups and Erza just overpowers her opponents.
  • Heroic BSOD: Has one when Doriate turns him into a kid and Gray accidentally associates him with Deliora. Thankfully he managed to get a grip on it.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Attempted twice in the Galuna Island arc, before getting some sense literally punched into him.
    • During the fight with the dragons, he saved Juvia from getting killed when the dragons tried to shoot at her. He ends up taking the shots, much to Juvia's horror.
    • Attempted again against Silver, but then Gray realized he didn't want his guild grieving over him.
  • An Ice Person: Noted to be a highly skilled ice wizard.
  • Image Song: Frozen Soul, True Pride and Naked Dream.
  • Impaled with Extreme Prejudice: When fighting Silver, several spikes are sent through Gray's body.
  • It's Personal: Multiple times, as a matter of fact:
    • First is against Deliora, who destroyed his hometown and killed his family. When he tried fighting it, it ended up getting her master Ur turned to ice.
    • Second is against Lyon, who tries resurrecting said demon, thus threatening to not only undo the sacrifice Ur made to seal it away, but also essentially killing Ur since it's her living body that had been keeping the demon sealed.
    • Third is against Ultear, who is his master's daughter and has done plenty of evil stuff while badmouthing her mother Ur.
    • Fourth is against both Raven Tail and Rufus of Sabertooth, both of whom subject him to a humiliating defeat at the start of the Grand Magic Games. Though he does get the honor of taking Rufus down personally, he never gets to get back at Raven Tail, so Laxus avenges him instead.
  • The Lancer: To Natsu, since they rarely cooperate but Natsu is arguably stronger.
  • Made of Iron: He gets impaled countless times while fighting Silver, but manages to pull off a victory.
  • Magic Knight: While Erza fits more on the Knight side, Gray is a bit more magical, but his fighting style is different from Natsu's.
  • Manly Tears
  • Megane: In the crossover with Flunk Punk Rumble.
  • Mistaken for Gay: Juvia thinks he's gay for Lyon.
  • Mr. Fanservice: Good looking and cool, in addition to his tendency to strip subconsciously. Possibly lampshaded with his stalker, Juvia, and freely stated by his creator, who admits to covering Gray's past first to try and increase the number of female fans.
  • Multi-Melee Master/Multi-Ranged Master: Or more. His ice usually takes the form of different weapons, though it's not limited to that.
  • Naked People Are Funny: His subconscious stripping is a Running Gag.
  • Nice Hat: He dons Rufus' big plumed hat at the end of Chapter 306. Cue the swooning fangirls.
  • Number Two: Serves as this for Erza, being the most level-headed member of the team, and often leads in Erza's absence while Natsu runs off by himself.
  • Oblivious to Love: Gradually and subtly subverted; he doesn't seem to notice Juvia's flirting too much in earlier arcs, and when he does he ignores it. They do interact quite frequently, but he treats her the same as Lucy or Erza. Post-Time Skip, however, he is strongly implied to be aware of Juvia's feelings when Erza encourages him to be more friendly with her. He tries to Ship Sink him and Juvia after the Magic Tournament arc, but she won't give up so easily.
  • Out of Focus: Despite being a main character, Gray plays the smallest role as the story goes on. While he still gets a fight every now and then like Lucy, but he's hardly developed since the Galuna Island Arc. Doesn't help that he keeps doing the Oblivious to Love shtick with Juvia until the end of the Grand Magic Games arc. He does get more focus in the Tartarus arc.
    • More focus is a relative term. All the other members of Team Natsu have still had more screen time than he has in the Tartarus arc. Then he shows up to battle Arc Villain Mard Geer.
  • Parental Abandonment: His parents were killed by Deliora and the woman who raised him die by his own actions.
  • Power Tattoo: On his right arm when his father gives him his Ice Devil Slayer Magic.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: He's the blue oni to Natsu's red oni.
  • Reluctant Fanservice Guy
  • Replacement Goldfish: Ur might have denied seeing Gray and Lyon as a replacement for Ultear, but she definitely gave them the love she couldn't give to her daughter.
  • Revenge Before Reason: The reason why he is now masterless.
  • The Rival: Is a friendly one to Natsu. He also has Lyon, the old pupil of his mentor.
  • Scars Are Forever: The three scars on his forehead and abdomen. He got the first one in the Galuna Island arc, and it's been there ever since. The second one was also from the Galuna Island arc, but seemed to appear and disappear before he gets the third one fighting Ultear, and from then on both of them are drawn consistently in an X-shape.
  • Shaping Your Attacks: His Ice-Make Magic shapes ice into anything he imagines, ranging from cannons to ladders.
  • Ship Tease: So far he's had some with Juvia, Erza, Lucy, Ultear, and even Cana if you squint. This is lampshaded in one chapter cover when Jason sees him drinking coffee with Mirajane and immediately assumed they were an item.
  • Shut Up, Hannibal!: Delivers one to Ultear by punching her in the face with ice magic.
  • The Smart Guy: On the combined Fairy Tail team in the Grand Magic Games arc.
  • Spontaneous Weapon Creation: Goes from Shaping Your Attacks to this, most notably post-Time Skip.
  • Stepford Smiler: A noticeable type A after the Magic Tournament arc. He see's what appears to be himself dying and then quickly after finds out Ultear performed a Heroic Sacrifice to save them all. It's noticble in that he's showing more signs of some issues.
  • Straight Man: Not as much as Lucy, but it's there sometimes.
  • Super Mode: A variation. He can demonize himself in order to become immune to certain magic. No clue if this gives him any power boost, but it allowed him to block Memento Mori.
  • Taking the Bullet: Saves Juvia and vets hit with multiple dragon blasts.
  • Tareme Eyes: One of the many insults Natsu has for him.
  • Took a Level in Badass: In most of Gray's previous fights, his Ice-Make Magic has been seen as less than powerful compared to his opponents', only managing to win through sheer will and creative applications of Ice Make. But by inheriting Silver's Ice Demon Slayer Magic, Gray has finally gained truly powerful offensive magic than is on par with Dragon Slayer Magic and becomes the one person who can actually fight Mard Geer and make him worry.
  • Training from Hell: It was actually much colder than hell.
  • Trauma Conga Line: Basically his life. When he was a child, he lost his parents to Deliora, and was taken in by Ur, who'd trained him alongside Lyon. Because of his rage towards Deliora, he carelessly attacks Deliora, and is overwhelmed, forcing Ur to perform a Heroic Sacrifice, killing herself along with Deliora. He is immediately spurned by Lyon, and is forced to fight him years later. Fast-forward to the Tenrou Island arc, he fights Ur's daughter and his sisterly figure, and is suspended in time along with many of the other Fairy Tail members. During the Grand Magic Games arc, he loses spectacularly during the Hidden challenge, and becomes a laughingstock to the audience. Then, he is violently killed by a dragon, only to be revived by Ultear's time reversal, which ends up turning her into an old woman instead, and Gray is the only one to know of what she'd done for Fairy Tail. Fast-forward to the Tartaros arc, where he faces the threat of everyone who Ur cared about being murdered. On top of that, he was almost forced to kill Silver and loses him anyway as Silver told Juvia to deactivate Face, which would kill Silver in the process. No wonder Gray is so somber, especially compared to Natsu and Lucy.
  • Tsundere: A mild version, but the traits are there sometimes, especially towards Natsu. A prominent example is during the Lullaby arc where he quietly tells Natsu not to die and denying it a second later, cluing into the fact that the two of them don't really hate each other as much as they claim. Moments like that continue to occasionally pop up throughout the series.
    • More prominently, he is tsundere towards Juvia. He somewhat callously rejects her (rather over-the-top) advances, yet he does care for her a great deal.
  • Unstoppable Rage: To say he went into one when he found out that Deliora is alive and using his own Father's body to fight him, would be a understatement. Only it was a bluff by Silver to get Gray to kill him.
  • Volleying Insults: With Natsu.
  • Voluntary Shapeshifting: By using Devil Slayer Magic, he can demonify his body to resist Curses.
  • Walking Shirtless Scene: He strips whenever he gets serious. He also strips whenever it would be funny. He doesn't even realize he's doing it, because he's so used to being cold.
  • Weak, but Skilled: Out of the group Gray is not as strong as Erza or Natsu but makes up for it with a arsenal of magic attacks much higher then even Erza. He also pulls Determinators out more then even Natsu as times, winning by just never giving up and his creative mind allows him to come up with attacks on the fly. Eventually he obtains his father's Devil Slaying magic, making him just as strong, if not moreso then Natsu.
  • Would Hit a Girl/Would Hurt a Child: He clearly states in his battle against Juvia that it he will show no mercy to those who hurt his friends, even if his opponent is a woman or a child. So far, the latter has never been applied, but the former has been played straight.

    Erza Scarlet
Magic: Requip (The Knight), Sword Magic, Telekinesis
Weapons/Equipment: 200+ Weapons and Armors, Artificial Eye
Guild Mark: Upper Left Arm (Blue)

An S-Class wizard and the strongest female in Fairy Tail, also known as "Titanianote ". Her magic is called "The Knight", which lets her requip various weapons and pieces of armor instantly. Her traumatic childhood experience as a slave forced to build the Tower of Heaven has hardened her into a very serious young woman who doesn't tolerate her teammates fooling around and breaking the guild rules, though she slowly warms up to them over time.

Voiced by: Sayaka Ohara (JP), Colleen Clinkenbeard (EN)

  • Absolute Cleavage: Her Sea Empress Armor bares this.
  • Absurdly Sharp Blade
  • The Ace: She is known as the the best female fighter in a guild known for their incredible strength. Even Natsu is initially scared senseless with the prospect of receiving punishment by her. Over the course of the series, she's accomplished many feats deemed "impossible" by most characters (the best example of this being Pandemonium, in which she singlehandedly slayed 100 monsters, which could even overpower a Wizard Saint). This is lampshaded by Happy when she stands up after having been tortured and simultaneously stripped of her five senses and curbstomps Kyouka.
Kyouka: "You shouldn't even be able to see me, let alone hear my voice! So how do you know where I am?."
Pantherlily: "The only possible explanation is that it's some sixth or seventh sense."
Lector: "Are you saying that with all of her senses robbed, some other form of perception has awakened?"
Happy: "No, I think the explanation is much simpler. It's because SHE'S ERZA."
Lily, Lector, and Frosch simply agree in unison.
  • A-Cup Angst: When shrunk down to a child she is horrified by her sudden lack of cleavage.
  • Action Girl: To the freaking max.
  • Adjusting Your Glasses: By the corner.
  • Adorkable: Despite the ferocious attitude, she can become this around certain things. Like Jellal. Or Strawberry cake.
  • Almost Kiss: With Jellal when they reunite post-Time Skip. It's hard to tell in the manga since it's a Kissing Discretion Shot, but the anime confirms this.
  • Ambiguous Disorder: Erza is... weird.
  • Armor Is Useless: Downplayed. While her armors have many uses, she wins an increasing number of fights wearing the Sarashi and flame-print pants combo that's explicitly stated to provide no protection.
  • Artistic License – Biology: Someone with no hearing cannot speak clearly or stand properly without equilibrium provided by ear fluid. Having no sense of touch doesn't help with trying to walk, either. Guess what Erza does without her five senses?
    • Alternately, she lost her sense of hearing according to the definition of a demon and ergo that's how her Curse works.
  • The Atoner: In the Tower of Heaven arc.
  • Authority Equals Ass Kicking
  • Awesomeness by Analysis: She doesn't like revealing her full power right away in a fight and would rather just use about as much as she needs to just win. She ends up heavily wounded in some of her battles because she just tanks whatever her opponents throw at her until she has a good grasp of the best way to take them down.
  • An Axe to Grind: Can use a pair of axes in her Black Wing Armor.
  • Back-to-Back Badasses: With Juvia in the Sirius Island arc.
  • Badass: Probably the most badass character in the series.
    • Badass Adorable: She has her moments.
    • Badass Transplant: As if her immense strength and arsenal weren't enough, her artifical-eye protects her from any magic that affects the target through the sense of sight.
    • Handicapped Badass: She lost her right eye in her days of slavery, but still led a rebellion in order to rescue Jellal. She got a replacement later.
      • Taken to a whole new level in Chapter 403, after having lost her sight, hearing, sensation, taste, and smell.
    • Little Miss Badass: Led her fellow slaves in a revolt in order to save Jellal.
    • Heartbroken Badass: Again, with Jellal. Hilariously lampshaded by Happy.
  • Bare Your Midriff: Some of her armors.
  • Bathtub Bonding: Did this with Natsu and Gray when they were all younger. Still likes to invoke this with them despite having grown up. They are noticeably uncomfortable with this - she is not.
  • Battle Ballgown: Her Heaven's Wheel Armor especially.
  • Berserk Button: She is pretty forgiving even with her high sense of justice, but do not harm any innocents, especially her friends. She looks like she wants to kill Minerva for what she does with Millianna and Kagura.
    • And don't deny her strawberry cake either.
      • And torturing her has become yet another berserk button for her. Kyouka found this out the hard way.
      • Of course, Kyouka wasn't the first. That would be those cultists from her childhood.
  • Big Eater: Ordered 50 cakes—one was for Wendy.
    • Also in the anime edition of the episode about Happy's birth, Mirajane keeps on mocking her eating habits and calling her fat.
  • The Big Girl: She is the best fighter in the group and usually takes down The Dragon of the enemy group.
  • BFS: Several of her outfits come with really big swords.
  • Black Swords Are Better: Her Purgatory Armor's Sword.
  • Blade on a Stick: Can use them through her Requip.
  • Blade Spam: Her Heaven's Wheel attack.
  • Bound and Gagged: By her old friends from the Tower of Heaven.
  • Braids of Action: While she was younger. Also in the Lightning Empress Armor and Armadura Fairy.
  • Broken Bird: She describes herself as a girl who was always crying inside. She spends her time at the titular guild in constant fear for her safety, grieving over her childhood friends who have died at Jellal's hands, and regretting not being able to protect them. She gets better when the Tower of Heaven is destroyed, freeing the captives.
  • Brown Eyes: To reflect her strong-willed, serious nature.
  • Buxom Is Better: According to Wendy.
  • Cat Girl: In the third OVA, where she met her younger self, who was weirded out by the outfit.
  • Chainmail Bikini: Her standard armor averts this, but most of her magical ones play it straight. She also has a literal chainmail bikini that she wears at the beach.
  • Charles Atlas Superpower: In her first appearance alone she carries a giant monster horn nearly twice her size with one hand.
  • Characterization Marches On: In her early appearances, Erza is very fond of corporal punishment against Natsu and Gray due their constant bickering, and even against herself when she happens to slip into some quirky behavior, in both cases as a Running Gag to match Team Natsu's odd behavior. She is also pretty much The Stoic and there were little to no cases of her being gentle towards someone. Later, after her backstory is fleshed out, Erza grows out of beating Natsu and Gray around. They also mostly stop picking on each other too, and her gentle side becomes much more apparent. It's also around this point that her hamminess calms down a little.
  • The Chick: On the combined Fairy Tail team for the Grand Magic Games, since Laxus is more of a Big Guy than she is. On the last day of the games, she is The Leader with Juvia being The Chick.
  • Childhood Friend Romance: With Jellal.
  • Cleavage Window: The Nakagami Armor exposes most of her torso, as do many other of her armors.
  • Clothing Damage: Constantly.
  • Color Failure: After being rejected by Sieg/Jellal/Mystogan in the High School A.U. omake.
  • The Comically Serious: A lot of Erza's most hilarious moments involve her playing utterly absurd situations perfectly straight. Her deadpan seriousness makes it twice as funny when she goes along with whatever wackiness the rest of the guild is involved in.
  • Conservation of Ninjutsu: Her hardest mission was defeating 100 knights by herself. This counts as foreshadowing since she does it again during the Fantasia arc. Because we needed to be reminded of how awesome Erza is.
  • Contralto of Danger: Both the original and dub voices give her a low voice.
  • Cool Big Sis: When she isn't beating the crap out of her teammates. And when she does, it's usually because they've done something wrong and she's gone into Stern Teacher mode. Romeo refers to her as being this.
  • Cool Sword: Erza has many of these. Some of her swords have elemental powers, some can fire beams of light, among other abilities.
  • Cosplay Otaku Girl: More so than Lucy that is. They cosplay about as much as the other, but Erza does it on purpose, and actually keeps such outfits in her Hammerspace, and some extras are on display in her dorm room.
  • Covert Pervert: Hinted to be this by Levy, if her Stripperiffic cosplay outfits weren't enough of a hint.
    • In the extended OVA version of the Fairy Hills, she is seen holding Laki's chains and cuffs while blushing.
    • She's also rummaged through Lucy's underwear drawer a few times.
  • Crazy-Prepared: She has an armor for nearly every situation.
  • Cross-Cast Role: She acts the role of the prince during the play.
  • Cry Cute: In one eye, at first.
  • Death In All Directions: Circle Sword: Blumenblatt.
  • Death Glare: She's prone to this when she's pissed. And even when she's not pissed.
    • The worst was when she found out that Minerva had cut Millianna's back several times in Chapter 316. Her eyes shrank considerably out of pure rage.
  • Death or Glory Attack: Demon Blade Crimson Sakura.
  • Defrosting Ice Queen: Starts off as a cold, no-nonsense person. After the Tower of Heaven, she becomes much more open.
  • Determinator: She and Natsu are arguably the biggest Determinators in the titular guild. Examples:
    • She says early on that if worse should ever come to wear and she were to run out of magic power, she would resort to picking up a stick to keep fighting.
    • During the Tenrou Island arc, she faces off against Azuma, who hits her with two Terra Clamares, each one being powered by all of the Tenrou Tree's magic. She defeats Azuma, who had the power to fell Mirajane. Then, she joins her comrades to help defeat Hades.
    • During the Pandemonium challenge in the Grand Magic Games, she takes on all 100 monsters, when 51 would have been enough to secure victory. One of them was an S-Class whose power triples when it becomes the last one standing. She is exhausted and heavily bloodied throughout the challenge, yet she solely defeats all of the monsters. Her Determinator status is lampshaded by Levy.
    • She also manages to one-shot Minerva during the last day of the Grand Magic Games by using her Nakagami armor, after having been badly slashed up by Kagura and having had her foot crushed by an avalanche.
      • Still bearing heavy damage to her leg after fighting Kagura and Minerva, she refused help from Elfman and Lisanna while fighting one of the dragons' minions. Thrown aside, and unable to move because she was so badly injured, she reflected on how her inability to accept help was going to be her end. Jellal fought off the minions about to kill her.
    • After having been whipped bloody and electrocuted, with her sensitivity to pain heightened, all by Kyouka, she proceeds to curbstomp Kyouka after being rescued by Natsu and Lisanna.
    • She stands up, triumphant against Kyouka after having been made to feel crippling pain from the slightest sensation, tortured again and having all five of her senses stripped away from her slowly.
  • Disability Superpower: Her right eye is fake and immune to illusions.
  • Distress Ball: Whenever she so much as hears Jellal's name.
  • Ditzy Genius: Like Natsu. Brilliant in a fight, but she has interesting ideas on how other things, like dancing work.
  • Does Not Know Her Own Strength: Unfortunately for Juvia during the S-Class exam.
  • Dominatrix: She seems awfully fond of grinding a foot down on whoever happens to there. During the "Sky Labyrinth" challenge, she got the matching outfit.
  • The Dreaded: She is one of the good guys and a loyal comrade to all Fairy Tail members, but the simple announcement of her return from a mission is enough to scare the shit out of everyone. She is also a very well-known mage throughout the entire country.
    • Had she died in one arc where she pulls a Disney Death: She is ranked as one of the TEN GREATEST MAGES IN THE PLANET! And, the rank PERMANENTLY held for her.
  • Drives Like Crazy
  • Dual Wielding: Even with two BFS.
  • Elegant Gothic Lolita: Complete with Zettai Ryouiki.
  • Even the Girls Want Her: Lucy has a slight crush, as do many female fans. Bisca Mulan had a crush on her when they first met.
  • Eye Scream: Lost her eye while she was tortured after being accused of masterminding an escape plan in the Tower of Heaven.
  • Fanservice with a Smile: She has no problems dressing in sexy outfits.
  • The Fashionista: She loves to dress up, has over 100 armors and, according to Word of God, once scared a major fashion designer into designing pretty armor for her.
  • Fiery Redhead: She can get angered easily.
  • Fountain of Youth: Gets hit with this in the Sun Village Arc
  • Full-Frontal Assault: When she turns back to normal after being turned into a child, her dress turns out to be her shirt, but she's naked from the waist downwards while fighting Minerva.
  • Genre Savvy: In the race episode: while Natsu, Jet, Gray and Gajeel are getting trampled, she quickly crosses the finish line to avoid being in last place. Lampshaded by the announcer, much to her embarrassment.
  • Girlish Pigtails: Flame Emperess Armor and Armadura Fairy.
  • The Glasses Come Off: During an OVA.
  • Go Out with a Smile: When she wants to pull a Heroic Sacrifice at the end of the Tower of Heaven arc, she smiles to Natsu, just happy that her friends always were there for her and assured that she will be saving them now. Fortunately, she gets saved from death and everybody survives.
  • Godiva Hair: It goes down to the small of her back.
  • Going Commando: At least in one of the omakes, when she claims to not know what a bra is and has an odd fascination with the concept of underwear. Justified considering her backstory.
    • When shrunk down to a child, one of the first things she does is lift the hem of her dress, look down, and freak out, indicating that she habitually doesn't wear panties or they fell off.
      • More likely the latter, considering her usual outfit includes a skirt.
  • Hair Decorations: Most of her armors add small things like hats or hair clips.
  • Hammerspace: She has hundreds of outfits, both for combat and non-combat purposes.
  • Heroes Prefer Swords: despite the sheer number of armor sets she has, she only uses swords or occasionally spears.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Twice attempted, twice subverted.
  • Heroic Self-Deprecation
Erza: "It's not that I was protecting everyone... I was the one always being protected."
  • Hyperspace Arsenal: Her magic in a nutshell.
  • Hyperspace Wardrobe: Her variation of the reequip type magic.
  • I Am Not Left-Handed: Pulls this on Minerva by releasing her Second Origin.
  • The Illegible: Erza is implied to be this by Lector and Frosch as they complain about how poorly her letter about Minerva joining the Tartaros guild was written. Erza is understandably huffy about this.
  • Image Song: Wings of Liberty. Doubles as a do it yourself theme music power up in the second OVA. Also Scarlett
  • Implausible Fencing Powers: She might be the best swordsman in the series and she pulls off some truly awesome stunts.
  • Impossibly Cool Clothes: Most of her armors.
  • Infinty Plus One Armor: The Nakagami Armor, which allows her to break the laws of magic, although the sheer amount of magic that it drains from the user keeps her from using it until she activates her Second Origin.
  • Instant Armor: Her magic—"The Knight".
  • Interrogated for Nothing: Kyouka tortures her and even threatens to kill Mirajane in an attempt to force Erza to reveal Jellal's whereabouts when Erza actually doesn't know.
  • Iron Lady: At first. She softens as the series goes on.
  • Jack-of-All-Trades: Thanks to her armors, Erza can do anything she needs to.
    • Fragile Speedster: Her Flight Armor greatly increases her speed but leaves her with no defenses.
    • Glass Cannon: Her Samurai outfit forgoes all defense in-favor of speed and strength but leaves her highly vulnerable. Her Heaven's Wheel Armor is a lesser example too.
    • Lightning Bruiser: Her Black Wing Armor increases her speed and strength, making her more powerful overall. Her Armadura Fairy fits into this as well.
    • Mighty Glacier: Her Giant's Armor gives her a massive increase in strength, but reduces her speed.
    • Stone Wall: Her Adamantine Armor is this, being purely defensive.
  • Jeanne d'Archétype: Part of her backstory. The chapter title even specifically references it.
  • Justice Will Prevail: Why she joined Fairy Tail.
  • Katanas Are Just Better: Has been shown winning an increasing number of fights with them.
  • Kicking Ass in All Her Finery: Defeats Coordinator in a wedding dress.
  • Kimono Fanservice: The Robe of Yuen.
  • Kissing Discretion Shot: Leans in for a silhouetted kiss with Jellal post-Time Skip. Confirmed in the anime to be an Almost Kiss.
  • Lady of War: Can attack opponents with her weapons while still looking graceful in armor.
  • Large Ham: Especially towards the start of the series.
  • The Leader: Despite Natsu being The Hero, Erza is the person who actually leads Team Natsu. Makes sense since she's an S-Class wizard.
  • Leotard of Power: Some of her outfits are very form fitting.
  • Life or Limb Decision: Averted in the Nirvana arc. Her arm gets infected with poison and she asks someone to cut it off. Lyon offers to do it but is stopped by Gray, and she is later healed by Wendy.
  • Loner-Turned-Friend: To Gray first and the rest of Team Natsu.
  • Lost Food Grievance: She has attacked people for ruining her strawberry cake.
  • Lots of Luggage: She never goes anywhere without a whole wagon load full of bulging suitcases. It's revealed she carries food in them.
  • Made a Slave: Her backstory.

    Wendy Marvell
Affiliation: Cait Shelter (former), Fairy Tail
Magic: Dragon Slayer Magic (Sky Dragon Slayer), Dragon Force, Unison Raid
Weapons/Equipment: Air Shatter Cannon (In Edolas)
Guild Mark: Right Shoulder (Light Blue)

The Sky Dragon Slayer, also known as the "Sky Maiden". She was raised by the dragon Grandine in the art of healing magic, though she can also use her magic for combat purposes such as breathing gusts of wind. She is introduced as a representative of the Cait Shelter guild during the alliance against Oración Seis, but joins Fairy Tail after learning her old guild doesn't actually exist. She becomes a permanent, though unofficial, member of Team Natsu over time.

Voiced by: Satomi Sato (JP), Brittney Karbowski (EN)

  • Action Girl: Post-Character Development.
  • A-Cup Angst: Her reaction to Reedus' future drawing of her. It doesn't help when she met her Edolas version of herself.
  • Badass Adorable: Equally Badass as she is cute.
  • Badass Boast: See Beware the Nice Ones below, but also:
Wendy: "After all, I am the pillar that holds my team!"
    • She later tells Zirconis, a massive man-eating dragon that her magic will defeat him.
  • Berserk Button: For the being obvious Token Mini-Moe of the team, it is quite surprising that she has one, but threatening Carla's life will get the crap beaten out of you.
  • Beware the Nice Ones:
Wendy: "But know this... When I am pushed into a corner, I become the Dragon of the Sky!"
  • Blow You Away: She can summon huge gusts of wind, as seen with her roar.
  • Call Back: Her Dragon Force has two.One is the feathers in the outfit she first appears with, reappearing as crystal like feathers, the other being her eye and hair colour becoming almost the same as Porlyusica's,who's basically the human vesion of Grandine.
  • Can't Hold Her Liquor: Then again, it isn't really wise to give a twelve-year-old sake.
  • Character Development: Wendy started out as shy, and at time crybaby, without fighting skills. As the series progresses, her shyness fades away, instead becoming a Combat Medic.
  • Child Mage: Biologically twelve years old. Which means she was being trained by Grandine at the age of 5.
  • Child Prodigy: Started of as having no combat skills whatsoever, but is able to learn how to fight very quickly just by observing her fellow Dragon Slayers Natsu and Gajeel.
  • Close-Call Haircut: Gets a portion of her hair lopped off during her fight with Ezel.
  • Combat Medic: Shapes up to be one once she learns how to use her Sky Dragon's Roar. She actively fights alongside her friends while providing support on the battlefield in the Edolas and Sirius Island arcs, and can be considered a serious threat in a one-on-one fight by the Grand Magic Games arc.
  • Cute Clumsy Girl: She trips on things like small pebbles.
  • Cute Little Fangs: Comes with being a Dragon Slayer.
  • Determinator: Natsu and the others seem to have rubbed off on her in that department.
  • Does Not Like Spam: She doesn't like pickled plums.
  • Don't You Dare Pity Me!: Said to Cheria during their battle when the latter suggested that she gives up due to her injuries.
  • Eye Colour Change: Dragon Force turns her eyes from brown to pink.
  • Girlish Pigtails: From the Edolas Arc and onwards.
  • Glass Cannon: Her spells pack a punch but she can't take a hit herself due to her lack of hand-to-hand combat experience. This has started to become less of an issue lately, due to her being able to cast enhancement magic on herself.
  • Healing Hands: The main benefit of being a Sky Dragon Slayer, though she can't heal herself.
  • Healing Shiv: She manages to do this with magic, by combining her Sky Dragon's Roar with her healing spells on Reborn Oracion Seis' Grim Reaper to restore his memories while he's attacking her in the anime-only Key of the Starry Sky arc.
  • Heroic BSOD: When she realizes that there are countless Face mechanisms left to destroy after she'd nearly died alongside Carla destroying just one. A chapter later, she's managed to will herself out of it.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Stayed behind with Carla to make sure Face was deactivated but thankfully Subverted because Doranbalt saves the both of them.
  • Image Song: "Amazing Blessings"
  • Important Haircut: After she and Carla realize that there are countless more Faces left to destroy, she cuts more of her hair off with her Razor Wind afterward, declaring that she wouldn't ever fall to despair. You know, just it case it wasn't already clear that she Took a Level in Badass.
  • Kid-Appeal Character: The only reason she was created in the first place, though character development has made her somewhat deeper than that.
  • Lightning Bruiser: She may not be as strong or fast as the others, but she becomes one when buffed. This goes Up to Eleven when in Dragon Force. She becomes fast enough to Flash Step around the battlefield.
  • Little Miss Badass: She had had her moments before, but she most definitely graduates to this once and for all during the Tartarus Arc, where she fights for the first time on a level that would rival Natsu or Gajeel, and single-handedly defeats one of Tartarus' Nine Demon Gates.
  • Meaningful Name: Wendy can sound like Windy.
    • Originally, she was going to be the Water Dragon Slayer, with her name becoming a pun on Wednesday (Suiyobi or "Water Day" in Japanese).
  • The Medic: One of very few, and probably the best.
  • Mystical Waif: Has elements of this in the Nirvana arc, including a mysterious past, bad guys wanting her, non-action status, bit of a Distressed Damsel, purehearted and kind, and The Medic.
  • Nice Mean And In Between: The nicest (shy, helpful, and compassionate) of Fairy Tail's three first-generation Dragon Slayers.
  • Older Than She Looks: She looks about six or seven years old, yet she is actually twelve. It gets a bit awkward when you realize that she was born in the same year, thus being the same age, as Sting and Rogue and she still looks twelve after the seven year time skip due to the spell Mavis cast on her and the other Tenrou Island Group members.
  • Overshadowed by Awesome: More in terms of looks than power. Many characters comment on her attractiveness, but next to the better-endowed Lucy and Erza...
  • Parental Abandonment: Like Natsu and Gajeel, the dragon Grandine left her without a word.
  • Poke the Poodle: She can't be scary no matter how hard she tries.
  • Power Dyes Your Hair: Her Dragon Force Mode dyes her hair light pink/purple.
  • Power Gives You Wings: Well, in her Dragon Force Mode, she grows feathers on her back that look like wings at least.
  • Pre-Asskicking One-Liner: I'm ruling over this space!
  • Rapunzel Hair: Until she cut it short.
  • Red Baron: "Sky Dragon" and "Sky Maiden".
  • Shoot the Medic First: What Faust and Hades try doing to her when they start fighting. Thankfully her friends are there to protect her.
  • Shout-Out: She bears some resemblance to Azu-nyan when she gets into her Edolas clothes, complete with pigtails.
  • Shrinking Violet: Is introduced this way, but once she joins Fairy Tail, she starts to grow out of it.
  • Shy Blue-Haired Girl: But as the series progresses, she loses the "shy" part.
  • Smurfette Principle: So far, she is the only female dragon slayer.
  • Status Buff: Her Sky Dragon Slayer magic is very practical because of this.
  • Super Mode: Dragon Force, which she even attains before Gajeel.
  • Sweet Tooth: A bonding point with Erza. The two even went on a mission together where their only reward was sweets.
  • Tagalong Kid: She becomes this for Team Natsu.
  • Tareme Eyes
  • Tender Tears
  • Token Mini-Moe: At first. She upgrades to Little Miss Badass after watching Natsu, Gajeel and Erza.
  • Tomato Surprise: Cait Shelter is just an illusion created by the long-dead master, Robaul. This leads to her joining Fairy Tail.
  • Took a Level in Badass: Gradually evolves from a meek young girl with no battle skills to a full-fledged Combat Medic who can hold her own in a fight, strong enough to defeat an executor of Fiore's Knights from the Order of The Hungry Wolves in one attack. Lampshaded by Jura in the Grand Magic Games arc. Finally achieves Dragon Force during her fight with Ezel to stop Face from going active.
  • Town Girls: The Femme to Lucy's Neither and Erza's Butch.
  • Unskilled, but Strong: A variation of this. While there is no questioning that she's very strong for a mage in her age group, she still lacks a lot of fighting experience. This trope is increasingly being subverted post-Tenroujima proven by the way she competed in the Grand Magic Games and during Lucy's rescue from Mercurius' labyrinthine Hell Palace. Finally put to bed when she attained Dragon Force in her fight against Ezel.
  • Weaksauce Weakness: Loke and Gray use her dislike of pickled plums to defeat her in the anime version of the S-Class exam.
  • You Gotta Have Blue Hair: A leftover from when Hiro was going to have her be a Water Dragon Slayer.
  • Zettai Ryouiki: Starts wearing them in the Edolas arc and onwards.

Affiliation: Cait Shelter (former), Fairy Tail
Magic: Aera, Precognition
Guild Mark: Back (Pink)

Wendy's caretaker. She is of the same species as Happy, a talking cat who can grow wings and fly. She is generally hostile towards Happy when they first meet, but gradually warms up to him over time. Unlike Happy, she was born with knowledge of what she and Happy really are—Exceeds from the parallel world of Edolas—thanks to her ability to foresee the future.
