Characters: Fairy Tail Other Guilds
aka: Fairy Tail Guilds

Besides Fairy Tail, a number of different guilds exist to help others, though some end up hindering each other.

Here be spoilers.

    open/close all folders

    Phantom Lord
Phantom Lord is the guild that was considered the single most powerful guild in Fiore before Fairy Tail came to prominence. An entire story arc is dedicated to a war that breaks out between the two guilds, which ends with Phantom Lord's defeat and ultimate disbandment for breaking guild rules and starting the war in the first place.

Jose Porla

Affiliation: Phantom Lord (former)
Magic: Darkness Magic (Shade), Thought Projection, Abyss Break

The master of Phantom Lord, and one of the Ten Wizard Saints. He is Makarov's self-fashioned rival, and is jealous of Fairy Tail's quick rise to fame. Upon learning of Lucy Heartfilia's membership in Fairy Tail, he decides to kidnap her and take control of her family's fortune, waging war against Fairy Tail.

Voiced by: Takashi Matsuyama (JP), Ed Blaylock (EN)

  • Arc Villain: Of the Phantom Lord arc.
  • Art Evolution: When he was first intruded, his design was rather silly and definitely invoked Narm. However within a few chapters and episodes, his design became more distinct and he ended up looking more Badass as a result.
  • Badass: The fact that is is a Wizard Saint alone is qualification. His guild has two base of operations, one turns into a mecha, and it has a giant cannon on it. Jose made sure that Phantom Lord was seriously stacked.
  • Bad Powers, Bad People: His "Shade" spell creates countless phantom-like Mooks. Not to mention just kicking up his aura makes people feel sick by being near him.
  • Beard of Evil
  • Big Bad Wannabe: He sees his destruction of Fairy Tail and his defeat of Makarov as his chance to prove who the best is. While he nearly succeeds in the former, he utterly fails in the latter. Makarov obliterates him without even trying and in contrast to the later villains like Hades, Zeref, and Acnologia, he's hardly a footnote.
  • Black Eyes of Evil: His eyes turn black when he fights Makarov in the anime and good lord does it look terrifying.
  • Casting a Shadow: His shadow involves creating shades or just plain out shadows.
  • Classic Villain
  • Dark Is Evil: Do we really need to say?
  • Evil Cannot Comprehend Good: He assumes Fairy Tail is protecting Lucy from him because she is rich.
  • Evil Is Petty: Yes, very petty.
  • Evil Redhead
  • Evil Sorcerer: His greatest flaw is even Pride.
  • Faux Affably Evil: Wears a thin facade of politeness that crumbles away at the smallest nudge.
  • Foil: To Makarov obviously. Both are Wizard Saints and the respective Guild Masters of their guild. Jose is a younger Smug Snake who happily starts wars for petty reasons, while Makarov is much older, is fairly humble of his abilities, and only fights other guilds to protect his "Children".
  • Green-Eyed Monster: Though he'd never admit it, he's clearly jealous of Fairy Tail's rise to fame.
  • Guyliner: Wears purple lipstick.
  • No Kill Like Overkill: He tries to obliterate Fairy Tail's guildhall with the magic cannon Jupiter, and later all of Magnolia with Abyss Break, just because he wants them to hand over a girl and use money she doesn't have.
  • Noodle Incident: Jose's personal grudge with Makarov began with an event that somehow involved alcohol.
  • Obviously Evil: A witch's hat and bat wings are just the start.
  • The Rival: To Makarov and Fairy Tail as a whole. Also a Rival Turned Evil, in a sense.
    • Unknown Rival: Makarov is aware of this, but considering just how vast in power Makarov is compared to Jose, Makarov does not feel the same.
  • Smug Snake
  • Nonstandard Character Design: At least when first introduced, his overall look and design is very different from the other characters.

Voiced by: Daisuke Endou (JP), Justin Cook (EN)

    Blue Pegasus
This guild is mostly made up of pretty boys and women, as well as people who think of themselves as such when they really aren't. Following the Time Skip, they become the third most powerful guild in Fiore.
  • The Beautiful Elite: Except Ichiya and Bob.
  • Butt Monkey: Similar to Mermaid Heel, they aren't a bad guild at all, but they have very impractical powers that simply don't work in the Grand Magic Games with who their facing. On the last day of the tournament, they take fifth place overall and lose almost all their members by just Gajeel and Gray alone, while Ichiya gets one-shotted by Jura and Erza take Jenny out in a Single-Stroke Battle.

Jenny Realite

Affiliation: Blue Pegasus
Magic: Take Over (Machina Soul), Transformation Magic
Guild Mark: Left Shoulder (Light Purple)

A wizard who is also a model for Sorcerer Weekly Magazine.

Voiced by: Kaori Nazuka (JP)

  • Combat Commentator: On the first day of the Grand Magic Games.
  • Designated Girl Fight: With Mirajane on the second day of the games, virtually all the girls on the fourth, and Erza on the fifth.
  • Didn't See That Coming: During the last part of her swimsuit contest with Mirajane, she makes a bet that the loser will have to get photographed naked for Sorcerer Weekly Magazine. Based on her knowledge that both main judges of their contest like younger women like Mira, and the guest judge Jason would like the sales that having Mira naked would give his magazine, Jenny is confident she will win. However, she completely forgets that their contest is supposed to be a battle contest.
  • Flower in Her Hair
  • Lovable Coward: In her own words, "escape and live to fight another day!"
  • Ms. Fanservice: Used to be Miss Fiore. Also, all her noteworthy appearances involve her wearing a bikini (her modelling fight against Mirajane, the Naval Battle and the visit in Ryusetzu Land - in the latter, she even loses her bikini bottom and spends the rest of the chapter like that).
  • Ocular Gushers: After losing to Mira and realizing she has to pose naked for Sorcerer Weekly.
  • The Rival: To Mirajane.
  • She's Got Legs: Just look at her outfit in the Grand Magic Games.
  • Stripperiffic: Her battle uniform against Mirajane is part-bikini, part-plate mail.

Affiliation: Blue Pegasus
Magic: Aera
Guild Mark: Back (Blue)

A wizard who wears a rabbit costume and acts as Blue Pegasus' "secret weapon" for the Grand Magic Games.

See Fairy Tail Others for more information.

    Lamia Scale
Another prominent guild. A handful of defectors from this guild first appear in the Galuna Island arc. They hold the honor of being the second strongest guild after the Time Skip.
  • Badass: They hold the title of the second strongest Light Guild before most of Fairy Tail returns. In fact, compared to most of the other guilds, they do consistently well the whole tournament, save Toby. Jura almost carried them to victory.

Ooba Babasaama

Affiliation: Lamia Scale
Magic: Spinning Magic
Guild Mark: Unknown

The master of Lamia Scale, an old, foul-tempered lady.

Voiced by: Ako Mayama (JP)

  • Everything's Better with Spinning: Constantly makes spinning gestures with her hands or entire body, as well as making her guild members spin around with her magic.
  • Fan Disservice: Seeing her in a bathing suit. As Chapati puts it...
Chapati: "With that single strike, all the excitement in this arena has gone down the drain."
  • Never Mess with Granny
  • Punny Name: Her name sounds similar to "ooba" and "baba-sama", which are both Japanese for "grandmother."

Lyon Vastia

Affiliation: Lamia Scale
Magic: Maker Magic (Ice-Make: Dynamic)
Guild Mark: Right Pectoral (Dark Blue)

Click here to see his pre-Time Skip appearance

A former student of Ur alongside Gray. He is an Ice-Make wizard but, unlike Gray and Ur, can use his power to create living ice golems. Introduced as the villainous Cold Emperor Lyon, he is obsessed with surpassing his late teacher by resurrecting and defeating Deliora, who Ur sacrificed herself for to seal away. He is eventually beaten by Gray and convinced to move on with his life by joining Lamia Scale.

Voiced by: Yuuki Kaji (JP), Sayaka Narita (JP - young), Jerry Jewell (EN), Leah Clark (EN - young)

  • Arc Villain: Of the Galuna Island arc.
  • Badass: It's note worthy that he's a prodigy as a Ice Mage who can beat Gray around easily. Natsu even has difficulty fighting him early on.
  • Child Prodigy: He was able to use One Handed Ice Make as a kid, a feat that is considered vert difficult even for skilled mages.
  • Evil Counterpart: To Gray, at first.
  • Fake Defector: Pretends to attack Gray to focus Racer's attention on him so he can get Gray out of Racer's magic field and land a finishing blow. It fools even Sherry, his ally.
  • Heel-Face Turn
  • Heroic Sacrifice: When Racer pulls a Taking You with Me with explosives, Lyon pulls one of these to save Gray and Sherry. He manages to survive, though.
  • Hypocritical Humour: Tells Gray to put a shirt on despite not wearing one himself.
  • An Ice Person: Has the ability to create creatures out of his ice which move on their own.
  • Jerkass: When he first was introduced he was definitely one.
    • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: He's softened up since Gray beat him in the Galuna Island arc and while he's cold at times, he's more more caring about his allies and is friendly with Gray.
  • Large Ham: Only when he's suffering a Villainous Breakdown though
  • Love at First Sight: With Juvia, of all people.
    • He's moved on after the Grand Magic Tournament though.
  • Mr. Fanservice: Just as well-built as Gray, and almost as prone to taking his shirt off as him too.
  • Pretty in Mink: When he is wearing a jacket, anyway. The hood and cuffs are furred.
  • Red Baron: "Reitei"note
  • Replacement Goldfish: Ur might have denied seeing Gray and Lyon as a replacement for Ultear, but she definitely gave them the love she couldn't give to her daughter.
  • The Rival: To Gray though it's become more friendly as the series goes on.
  • Shaggy Dog Story: Goes through all the trouble of unsealing Deliora to destroy it himself. When it finally happens, he is dismayed to find that Ur already killed the demon.
  • Shirtless Scene: During the fight with Racer.
  • The Sociopath: At first.
  • Took a Level in Badass: Post-Time Skip, he's strong enough to fight against Kagura and hold his own against her (although she greatly holds back), and would had likely beat Gray and Juvia had it not been for Sherria being frozen with surprise.
  • White Hair, Black Heart
  • You Gotta Have Blue Hair: A light tone.

Sherry Blendy

Affiliation: Lamia Scale
Magic: Doll Play Magic
Guild Mark: Unknown

Click here to see her pre-Time Skip appearance

A young wizard with the power to control non-humans like dolls using her Doll Play magic. She acts as one of Lyon's loyal followers to take revenge against Deliora for killing her family, temporarily leaving Lamia Scale to do so. She later cleans up her act and returns to her guild.

Voiced by: Yuka Iguchi (JP), Trina Nishimura (EN)

Yuka Suzuki

Affiliation: Lamia Scale
Magic: Wave
Guild Mark: Unknown

Click here to see his pre-Time Skip appearance

A young man with large eyebrows who can negate magic with magic wave pulses from his hands. He leaves his guild to follow Lyon and take revenge against Deliora, but returns once he learns the error of his ways.

Voiced by: Masaki Kawanabe (JP), Anthony Bowling (EN)

Toby Orrolta

Affiliation: Lamia Scale
Magic: Mega Jellyfish Paralyzing Nails
Guild Mark: Unknown

Click here to see his pre-Time Skip appearance

A dimwitted man who dresses and behaves like a dog. He accompanies Sherry and Yuka in taking revenge against Deliora with Lyon.

Voiced by: Daisuke Kishio (JP), Chad Halbrook (EN)

  • Cloudcuckoolander: He spends three months looking for a sock hung around his neck the whole time.
    • It never occurred to him that when he names his attack "Paralysis Claw", it's not a secret what his claws will do. This was enough for Natsu to declare him an idiot.
  • Dumb Muscle: Toby is rather dimwitted, though he has bouts of random intelligence when he gets mad.
  • Hair-Trigger Temper: Toby sometimes gets mad for no apparent reason.
  • Heel-Face Turn
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: Toby is the only guy who Natsu defeats without lifting a finger.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: He just wants to help Lyon defeat Deliora, but crosses the line by trying to kill the villagers on Galuna Island for their demonic appearance (and hiring Fairy Tail to stop them).
  • Wolverine Claws: His magic lets him grow out his fingernails into sharp claws, which are also coated in a poison that paralyzes opponents.

Jura Neekis

Affiliation: Lamia Scale
Magic: Earth Magic
Guild Mark: Unknown

Click here to see his pre-Time Skip appearance

The Ace of Lamia Scale, and one of the Ten Wizard Saints. Among other things, he has the power to create indestructible columns of solid rock from the earth.

Voiced by: Yutaka Aoyama (JP), Kent Williams (EN)

  • The Ace: Being a Wizard Saint automatically makes him one, but his curbstomping of Brain, and Ogra, and the fact that he fought Laxus to a standstill, really shows his abilities. Theres also the fact that he held his own, and was winning against Jellal too.
  • Badass: Don't let his look fool you, he's one of the strongest characters in the setting.
  • Bald of Awesome
  • Big Damn Heroes: A few times during the Nirvana arc.
  • Blood Knight: A more subdued and heroic example than usual. During the final day of the Grand Magic Games he mentioned his blood was boiling even though he initially was only participating because of Obaba's orders, and he had a massive smile on his face the entire time he was fighting Laxus.
  • Chekhov's Gunman: His name is brought up as early as the Galuna Island arc.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: Beats Brain silly. Later, this tropes becomes literal, when he actually stomps Olga's head into the curb with his bare hands, without his magic.
  • Dishing Out Dirt
  • Does Not Like Peas: Because when he was eating some, a worm got into his mouth.
  • Gentle Giant: Despite being tall and a bit indimdating, Jura is actually kind and humble.
  • Graceful Loser: When Laxus scores the telling blow against him in the tournament finals, Jura smiles and congratulates him on his victory.
  • Humble Hero: He is one of the Ten Wizard Saints, but dismisses it as only a title granted by the Magic Council and states that he is the weakest of the ten. Suffice to say, "weakest" doesn't mean weak. He is apparently moved up as the fifth strongest during the Time Skip, though the other four above him are mentioned as being more than human.
  • Kung-Fu Wizard: Though he primarily uses his magic, he is also this.
  • Lantern Jaw of Justice
  • Let's Get Dangerous: Jura is hyped as one of the Ten Wizard Saints, but it doesn't really show at the start, which isn't helped by the fact he calls himself the weakest of the group. However, when he faces Brain, he shows exactly why he has that title.
    • Likewise during his match with Laxus and realizing he's serious. He just smiles and tells him to bring it on.
  • Mighty Glacier: Likely to his magic, Jura prefers standing in place and casting magic attacks, not that it's really a weakness.
  • Nice Guy: A genuinely nice guy, despite his title.
  • Person of Mass Destruction: If his Meidou Fugaku spell is anything to go by, he is likely this if said spell is used in a large scale.
  • Red Baron: "Iron Rock" Jura.
  • Secret Secret Keeper: During the Grand Magic Games, he figures out that "Mystogan" is Jellal in disguise due to his opponent's magic. Luckily for Fairy Tail, Jura knows Jellal for the good man he is.
  • Simple Staff: He has one, but he is never shown using it.
  • The Stoic
    • Not So Stoic: His reaction to Hoteye's Heel-Face Brainwashing. He also does a Jaw Drop when Jellal inexplicably collapses after a fit of odd behavior (caused by Ultear and Merudy) and when Natsu makes a scene at the banquet by taking the King's crown.
  • Took a Level in Badass: As if he weren't badass enough, after the Time Skip, he goes from being the weakest of the Ten Wizards to No. 5.
  • Unusual Eyebrows: Their almost Might Guy level!
  • Walking Shirtless Scene: Until after the Time Skip.
  • Worthy Opponent: He and Laxus consider each other as such.

Sherria Blendy

Affiliation: Lamia Scale
Magic: God Slayer Magic (Sky God Slayer)
Guild Mark: Right Calf (Green)

Sherry's cousin. She is the Sky God Slayer with mastery over wind and healing magic.

Voiced by: Yuka Iguchi (JP)

    Cait Shelter
A guild whose members are descended from the Nirvit, an ancient tribe that developed the ancient magic Nirvana. Or so they claim; most of its members are actually just an illusion created by its master for the sole purpose of caring for Wendy.

Affiliation: Cait Shelter
Magic: Illusion Magic
Guild Mark: Unknown

The master of Cait Shelter. He is actually the ghost of the last remaining member of the Nirvit tribe, refusing to rest until Nirvana is destroyed.

Voiced by: Kazuya Tatekabe (JP), Bill Flynn (EN)

Wendy Marvell

See Fairy Tail Team Natsu.

See Fairy Tail Team Natsu.

    Twilight Ogre
A guild that establishes itself as the strongest in Magnolia Town over the Time Skip. Fairy Tail becomes indebted to the guild

Affiliation: Twilight Ogre
Magic: Unknown
Guild Mark: Unknown

The master of Twilight Ogre.

Affiliation: Twilight Ogre
Magic: Unknown
Weapons/Equipment: Giant Club
Guild Mark: Unknown

Fairy Tail's debt collector who comes every month with his gang to trash the place when they please, at least until Fairy Tail's strongest members return.
  • Carry a Big Stick
  • Cheshire Cat Grin
  • The Worf Effect: He's apparently strong enough to intimidate Fairy Tail into submission. Then Natsu shows up and one-shots him with a single hit. Not only that, it later turns out the "weaker" Fairy Tail members were merely holding themselves back to avoid needless violence, and could have clobbered him and his gang any time they wanted.
    • He and his men show up again for a single scene in the Grand Magic Games arc where they try to take on Natsu, Gray, and Elfman for revenge. Again, it doesn't end well for Ogre.

A guild that rises through the ranks and dethrones Fairy Tail as the strongest guild in all of Fiore over the seven-year Time Skip. Fairy Tail, naturally, reclaimed their title in the Grand Magic Games.

Affiliation: Sabertooth
Magic: Unknown
Guild Mark: Forehead (Purple)

The master of Sabertooth who goes to insane lengths to keep his guild at the top of Fiore. After Sabertooth's loss in the Grand Magic Games, he leaves the guild with his daughter.

Voiced by: Eiji Miyashita (JP)

  • Abusive Dad: Remember his treatment of Yukino? He did that to Minerva, because she was crying, and told her not to come home until she stopped. The silhouette of the poor girl as he leaves her alone in the forest they're in, is visibly shivering from the cold.
  • Bad Boss: Absolutely abuses his employees when they mess up, even when they have a good reason for it. Words cannot really describe it either.
  • Badass Boast: "To make skies make earth make the seas silent. That is Sabertooth."
  • Disproportionate Retribution: An iron clad rule of his is don't dishonor the guild which basically amounts to "win all your battles". You lose even once, he'll both embarrass you in front of the other members, then boot you out of the guild. It's a wonder he even has a guild with such a harsh rule in place. Also, no animals are allowed to wear the guild mark.
    • As a child, Minerva cried when he hit her. His response? Strip her naked and throw her into the woods until she stopped.
  • Establishing Character Moment: In his first appearance, he had Yukino stand in before him and the other members, orders her to strip naked, throws a bottle at her head and then kicks her out of the guild.
  • Evil Counterpart/Shadow Archetype: He seems to be what Laxus would have turned into had Natsu and Gajeel not stopped him in the Fantasia arc.
    • Also is one to Makarov, both being Guildmasters but have totally different viewpoints on their guilds membership.
  • Gag Nose: Despite being pretty large and bulky, he has a surprisingly thin, long nose.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: His own Social Darwinist doctrine gets him kicked out of his own guild by his own daughter Minerva after Sting takes him down with one blow.
  • Impaled with Extreme Prejudice: Sting hits him full blast with a White Dragon's Punch right through the midsection.
  • Jerkass: To say he's the biggest in the series would be an understatement. He forces his own daughter to strip naked when she failed him once, after he physically abused her.
  • Large and in Charge
  • Lack of Empathy: All he cares about is making his guild look good and doesn't care at all who does it as long as they do the job. Has no compassion at all for his members. And then there's vaporizing Lector in front of Sting, his long time friend. His response to Sting's outcry? "Silence! It was just a cat!". Yes, a cat that had sentience.
    • Up to Eleven in a flashback. He physically abused Minerva, his own freaking daughter and made her strip naked the same way he did Yukino.
  • Light Is Not Good: Looks kinda like a Buddhist god with his robes, rosary necklace, and crown-like hat, but he lacks any "good" qualities.
  • Made of Iron: Takes several lightning- and fire-enhanced attacks from Natsu without any visible injury. A full-throttle Dragon Force blast from Sting, however, put a hole through his chest. He survived.
  • Not Quite Dead: Many thought he was dead after he had a hole blown through his chest by Sting. He survived.
  • Prophet Eyes: His eyes are white, round and surrounded by a black shade. They make him look a lot creepier.
  • Second Place Is for Losers: A huge believer of this. The only instance where he accepted losing was when Sting got last place on the Chariot event, and this was only due to being unaware of Sting's motion sickness beforehand.
  • The Social Darwinist
  • The Sociopath
  • Tranquil Fury: When Sting and Rogue lose to Natsu, he just silently sits on his bench, but is so visibly furious that everyone around him runs away.
  • Too Dumb to Live: Even if he was capable of surviving Sting's attack, he isn't very wise to 1.) disown two very powerful members of his guild (both being even rarer Dragon Slayers to boot) and 2.) blast Lector in front of Sting, forgetting what he can do. He practically crosses into Genre Blindness considering his daughter knows how The Power of Friendship can work.
  • With My Hands Tied: During his fight with Natsu, he only uses his right arm while his left is in his coat and still manages to hold his own.

Sting Eucliffe

Affiliation: Sabertooth
Magic: Dragon Slayer Magic (White Dragon Slayer, White Drive, Dragon Force)
Guild Mark: Left Shoulder (White)

The White Dragon Slayer, and one of the aces of the Sabertooth guild along with Rogue. Later on he become the head of the guild following Jiemma's departure.

Voiced by: Takahiro Sakurai (JP), Fuyuka Ōura (JP - young), Michael Jones (EN)

  • Anime Hair
  • Arrogant Kung-Fu Guy: He and Rogue call themselves "true" Dragon Slayers since they actually killed a dragon. The two also mock Natsu for failing to kill Acnologia despite not knowing the details behind the incident or having actually seen the dragon in action. When they're faced with real dragons, they find that they're tougher than they imagined; just because they killed dragons before, that doesn't mean they fought them.
    • And this comes back to bite them in the ass when they're forced to fight real dragons and find they're much tougher then he thought. What's more said dragon he killed requested it of him to complete his training. Rogue's dragon likewise was just ill and he mostly mercy killed him.
  • Arrow Catch
  • Badass Boast: Before launching an attack, he has a tendency to describe, in an arrogant manner, how that particular move will affect his opponent. However, every one of those moves has little to none of the desired effects on Natsu.
  • Bare Your Midriff
  • Berserker Tears: When Jiemma seemingly vaporizes Lector.
  • Bishōnen
  • Blond Guys Are Evil
  • Break the Haughty: For a good portion of arc, he's pretty arrogant, thinking he can really take Natsu despite seeing first hand how determined he can truly be. Then they actually fight and Natsu takes him down without any difficulty, after which his self-confidence practically disappears. Lector's "death" doesn't help matters.
  • Bullying a Dragon: Intentionally tries pissing Natsu off by mocking his worth as a Dragon Slayer and laughing when Lucy gets beaten to near death by Minerva, just so they can fight each other at full strength. Natsu destroys both him and Rogue without batting an eye.
  • Combined Energy Attack: Using Unison Raid, he combined his power with Rogue in a desperate move to beat Natsu with their Holy Shadow Dragon Flash Fang attack. Ultimately useless, though...
  • Death Glare: In Chapter 389, he gives Marde Geer an intense glare while he voices his anger at his fellow guildmates particularly Minerva being harmed.
  • Defeat by Genre Savviness: Having recently attained to The Power of Friendship, he's all set to take on the members of Fairy Tail in the final round all by himself. When he sees them standing together tall and proud despite their injuries, he realizes that the strength of their bonds is greater, meaning he has no chance of winning. He falls to his knees and surrenders without a fight.
  • Deer in the Headlights: He's about to attack the severely wounded Fairy Tail members in the last moments of the tournament, but one look at their determination and he freezes up completely before realizing he can't go through with it.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Along with Rogue, Sting arrives and saves Erza and Minerva from Marde in the Tartarus arc.
  • Dissonant Serenity: His personality after his Freak Out over losing Lector.
  • Exact Words/Metaphorically True: He and Rogue always insisted that they killed their dragon teachers, not defeated them. As it turned out both dragons were old and sick, and killing them was a Mercy Kill. However since they left out this little detail, everyone assumed that the dragons were at their full strength when they killed them.
  • Expy: Sting is incredibly reminiscent of Lucia. He's a blond with a scar by his right eye and a clear rivalry against hero. While not recognized as a Wizard Saint, he his is one of the strongest members of the most powerful guild, and he values strength above relationships. He's just missing the Ax-Crazy.
    • Has slowly transitioned to be more of a blond version of Natsu, after being knocked off his high horse by Natsu and having the fact that he actually does care about his friends more than he does strength rather brutally shoved in his face.
  • Freak Out: When Jiemma seemingly kills Lector, Sting spends a few moments crying and screaming at the top of his lungs before blasting a hole right through Jiemma.
  • Good Scars, Evil Scars: Has one on his forehead.
  • Graceful Loser: As he falls after being defeated by Natsu, he apologizes to Lector for losing because "Natsu is too strong".
  • Gratuitous English/Odd Name Out: So far, all the Dragon Slayer spells were in Japanese. Sting's White Drive and Holy Nova attacks are in English instead, as well as some others.
  • Humble Pie: He stops acting so high and mighty after Natsu curb-stomps him.
  • Hypocrite: Despite simply giving up when he gets bad motion sickness, Sting still laughs at how weak Yukino is when she is matched against one of the more powerful competitors in the tournament.
  • Inelegant Blubbering: After the emotional upheaval of being led to believe that Lector died, this and begging are pretty much all he can do when Minerva steps in and declares Lector her hostage.
  • Jerkass
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: See Pet the Dog below.
  • Kick the Dog: He laughs behind Yukino's back after she is booted from the guild and later on when Minerva brutalizes Lucy.
  • Kick the Son of a Bitch: All but blasts Jiemma for attacking Lector.
  • Know-Nothing Know-It-All: His default position with the first generation Dragon Slayers, boasting to Natsu that he and Rogue would have beaten Acnologia despite having never seen the monster before.
  • Light 'em Up: His magic at first appears to be this, but later on is revealed to be less "light" than it is "holy".
  • Moral Myopia
  • Mr. Fanservice
  • Oh Crap: He's more than a little surprised when Natsu wipes the floor with both him and Rogue without resorting to his Lightning-Flame Dragon mode while the two are using Dragon Force.
  • Opera Gloves
  • The Paralyzer: The White Dragon Claw leaves behind a crest-like stigmata that paralyzes his target.
  • Pet the Dog: His companionship with Lector is his main humanizing point.
  • Post Final Boss: He becomes this at the end of the final day of the Grand Magic Games, giving up before throwing even a single punch, after being given the Death Glare by the bruised and battered, but still badass Team Fairy Tail.
  • The Promise: As a child, he promised Lector to defeat Natsu when he grew up so others would stop calling Lector a liar for saying that Sting killed a dragon.
  • Red Baron: "White Dragon"
  • Self-Made Orphan: He and Rogue killed the dragons who raised them. Weissologia asked him to do it, though.
  • Shadow Archetype: To Natsu.
  • Skyward Scream: When he thinks Lector is dead.
  • Super Mode: Being a Third Generation Dragon Slayer, he can activate the Dragon Force at will, giving him a pure white aura and scales on his face.
  • The Bus Came Back: He and Rogue reappear in the Tartarus arc to save Erza and Minerva from Marde.
  • Walking Shirtless Scene
  • Weaksauce Weakness: According to Rogue, all Dragon Slayers suffer from motion sickness.
  • The Worf Effect: Effortlessly dominated by Natsu even after unleashing his full power.
  • Worthy Opponent: After witnessing Natsu's assault on their lodge, he sees him like one. It turns out Natsu is more than worthy of him.
  • Yin-Yang Bomb: He and Rogue are "Third Generation" Dragon Slayers, a hybrid of "First" and "Second Generation" who learned magic from a dragon and had lacrima placed in their bodies.
    • His element is Light/Holy to Rogue's Shadow/Darkness.

Rogue "Rios" Cheney

Affiliation: Sabertooth
Magic: Dragon Slayer Magic (Shadow Dragon Slayer, Shadow Drive, Dragon Force)
Guild Mark: Left Shoulder (Black)

The Shadow Dragon Slayer, and one of the aces of the Sabertooth guild along with Sting.

Voiced by: Kenichi Suzumura (JP), Garret Storms (EN)

  • Arrogant Kung-Fu Guy: But not as much as the rest of his guild.
  • Badass Cape
  • Big Damn Heroes: Along with Sting, Rogue arrives and saves Erza and Minerva from Marde in the Tartarus arc.
  • Casting a Shadow: He shrouds himself in shadow to make himself harder to hit.
  • Combat Pragmatist: His fighting style revolves around sneak attacks with his shadows and most of the time, he would usually attack from behind the enemy.
  • Combined Energy Attack: Using Unison Raid, he combined his power with Sting in a desperate move to beat Natsu with their Holy Shadow Dragon Flash Fang attack. Ultimately useless, though...
  • Dark Is Not Evil: He was trained by the Shadow Dragon, and his powers are darkness-based, but he is the most friendly and human member of Sabertooth, and do not share nor like the cruelty of some members of his guild.
    • Dark Is Evil: Despite that, he is the only Dragon Slayer with a Living Shadow Super-Powered Evil Side inside of him, born of the darkness within his heart. Meaning, Rogue himself is not evil (in the present), but he is definitely capable of it.
  • Demonic Possession: Gets possessed by his own future self while fighting one-on-one with Gajeel.
  • Eerie Pale-Skinned Brunette
  • Enemy Within: According to Future!Rogue, the shadow that harasses Rogue and tries to make him kill Gajeel and go along with his future self's plans is, just as the shadow claimed to be, a manifestation of the darkness buried in Rogue's heart, and it will continue to try and consume him.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: Even though Sabertooth is full of anti-heroes more than outright villains, it's almost like he's in the wrong guild. For instance, he is the only member of Sabertooth who doesn't smile or laugh at Minerva's unnecessary cruelty to Lucy.
  • Exact Words/Metaphorically True: He and Sting always insisted that they killed their dragon teachers, not defeated them. As it turned out both dragons were old and sick, and killing them was a Mercy Kill. However since they left out this little detail, everyone assumed that the dragons were at their full strength when they killed them.
  • Facial Markings: His Dragon Force form gives him a sort of flame-like tattoo on his face rather than scales.
  • Future Me Scares Me: Present Rogue is horrified to hear that he will become the cause of all the destruction in Crocus.
  • Graceful Loser: As he's falling after being defeated by Natsu, he says Natsu's power is unfathomable.
  • Intangible Man: Can turn himself into shadows.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: He can act a little haughty, but deep down he is a nice guy (if not the nicest guy of Sabertooth).
  • The Lancer: In contrast to the rest of his team's open arrogance, Rogue is more quiet and contemplative. Still just as arrogant, but not nearly as obvious about it.
  • Living Shadow: Basically has one inside of him.
  • Mercy Kill: He killed an already deathly ill Skiadrum to alleviate his suffering.
  • Paper Tiger: Despite being one of two 3rd Generation Dragon Slayer in the strongest guild in Fiore with a solid reputation, he gets beaten twice during the Great Magic Games, both at the hands of supposedly inferior 1st Generation Dragon Slayers.
  • Peek-a-Bangs
  • Pet the Dog: His kind relationship with Frosch is this.
  • Raven Hair, Ivory Skin
  • Red Baron: "Shadow Dragon"
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning
  • Red Herring: When the Living Shadow Enemy Within first possesses him, we are led to believe it is a Super-Powered Evil Side until the shadow is shown leaving his body. When his future self appears, it seems obvious that Future Rogue was possessing him... until Future Rogue admits that he has an evil shadow inside of him, too, revealing that it was a Living Shadow Super-Powered Evil Side all along.
  • Self-Made Orphan: He and Sting killed the dragons who raised them. Skiadrum however was deathly ill so Rogue simply ended his suffering.
  • Shadow Archetype: To Gajeel.
  • The Stoic: Rogue barely ever talks or shows interest in anything.
    • Not So Stoic: Starts having a breakdown once the dragon he is fighting reveals his future self is the one causing the battle.
      • He also acts as a primary source of comic relief in a bonus omake, where the disappearance of Frosch and his later desire to see her succeed using her own abilities makes him a panicky, prideful, and all around sappy mess.
  • Sugar and Ice Personality
  • Super Mode: Dragon Force.
  • Super-Powered Evil Side
  • Tall, Dark and Handsome
  • The Bus Came Back: He and Sting reappear in the Tartarus arc to save Erza and Minerva from Marde.
  • Token Good Teammate: Despite sharing his team's arrogance, Rogue is the only member who thinks his guild should value the bonds between its members rather than strength.
  • Unfortunate Name: He apparently felt this way about the name 'Rogue' as a child, and insisted upon the nickname that Gajeel knew him by.
  • Weaksauce Weakness: According to Rogue, all Dragon Slayers suffer from motion sickness.
  • When He Smiles
  • The Worf Effect: Painfully dominated by Gajeel during their fight, and later by Natsu even with Sting backing him and both using Dragon Force.
    • On the final day of the tournament, Gajeel still manages to easily knock him around despite Rogue's insistence that Gajeel is not as strong as Natsu. Even after being possessed by his Super-Powered Evil Side and maximizing his own potential, Gajeel mops the floor with him once he starts eating his shadows.
  • Yin-Yang Bomb: He and Sting are "Third Generation" Dragon Slayers, a hybrid of "First" and "Second Generation" who learned magic from a dragon and had lacrima placed in their bodies.
    • His element is Shadow/Darkness to Sting's Light/Holy.

The most powerful member of the guild, and second-in-command to her father, Jiemma. After losing to Erza in the Grand Magic Games, she leaves the guild, joins a Dark Guild, and vows revenge on Fairy Tail.
  • Adaptation Dye-Job: Her hair is dark purple in the manga, but it's black in the anime.
  • Aloof Dark-Haired Girl: She is attractive, tall, has long dark hair, and acts very aloof and elegant most of the time.
  • Alpha Bitch: Probably the biggest female one ever seen in the series. Her only reaction to her father getting a hole blasted through his body is smiling and kicking him out of the guild for being too weak.
    • Considering she was now old enough to get back at him for making her strip as a child, who can blame her for that? Still doesn't excuse the other stuff, though.
  • Ambition Is Evil: As a dark guild mage, she wants to move up the ranks.
  • Badass: One of the strongest guild members of Sabertooth, possibly more a threat than her father. And there is the fact she personally engages Erza and Kagura in a Mêlée à Trois situation.
  • Badass Long Coat: Her outfit as a member of Tartarus. Complete with a sarashi, Bare Your Midriff, and underboobs.
  • Barrier Warrior: Seems to be this, as she blocks Natsu's punch with some colored aura around her hand.
  • Berserk Button: Despite seemingly being unconscious during her demonification, the mere mention of Fairy Tail causes her to shake with rage.
  • Broken Bird: Having Ziemma as a father isn't the best for your mental and emotional health.
  • Broken Tears: She can do nothing but cry as Sting wastes Sabertooth's last chance at winning the tournament by surrendering to Fairy Tail.
  • Bullying a Dragon: She thinks Erza's nothing but cornered prey just because her foot is shattered.
  • Came Back Wrong: After being defeated by Kyouka of Tartarus, Kyouka took enough of a liking to her to recruit her into Tartarus, with her body reanimated as that of a demon.
  • The Chessmaster: Unlike her father, she relies less on brute force and more on strategic moves. It's noticeable since she her guild is the only other who seems to be lining up their attacks and targeting specific members in similarity to Mavis. Needless to say, this is one of many qualities that make her a dangerous force.
  • Climax Boss: She's the last opponent Fairy Tail faces in actual physical combat on the final day of the Grand Magic Games.
  • Combat Pragmatist: She sees nothing wrong with stealing Lucy's celestial spirit keys to render her helpless in battle. Also, as the tactical mind of her group in the final match of the tournament, she tells her teammates to avoid the strongest members of the opposing teams so they can be taken on once weakened from earlier fights. This plan only falls through because Fairy Tail, even when beaten and broken, are literally just too badass to stay down for long.
  • Clothing Damage: Erza's finishing blow causes the most extensive example in the series.
  • Cry Cute: Whe she realizes that her guild still cares about her.
  • Daddy Issues: Her father treated her as badly as any "weak" member of the guild and constantly punished and humiliated her in horrible ways just because she wasn't strong enough.
  • Daddy's Little Villain: She's Jiemma's daughter. Doesn't stop her from kicking him out of the guild once the opportunity arises.
  • Dangerously Genre Savvy: She actually understands how the Power Of Friendship works, and is willing to use it against the heroes by manipulating Sting into fighting to save Lector.
  • Dark Action Girl: Too much of a bitch to be anything but.
  • Death Seeker: Minerva targets Erza during the Tartaros arc because she knows Erza has the strength to kill her. She's later talked out of this by Sting and Rogue, who came to save her, and are making it clear they want her to come back to Sabertooth, demon or not.
  • Dirty Coward: In a sense during the final game. It may be pragmatic, but she's essentially trying to avoid fighting the strongest people just so she can one-shot the weakest without exerting herself.
    • She can't fight Erza again at her strongest, oh no. She has to wait till a guild mate reverts her into a child to do that. She then remarks she prefers Erza in her adult form so she can humiliate her.
  • Disproportionate Retribution: She gives Lucy an unnecessarily cruel and violent beatdown just because Lucy said she isn't going to betray the emotions of her True Companions and the hell they went through to get to their position.
    • She also joined a Dark Guild and desires to murder Erza for handing her ass in the Magic Games.
  • Dissonant Serenity: Even when she sees Ziemma get a hole blasted through him, all she reacts is smirk right before kicking his rotten ass out of the guild.
    • Considering he abused her, one can hardly blame her.
  • Dragon-in-Chief: She's more intelligent and effective at leading and controlling the situation than her father is. It's possible she might be more dangerous than him too.
  • Dragon Lady: She wears a Qipao and an Odango Hair and is remarked by her cruelty.
  • Dynamic Entry: How she gets in on the fight between Erza and Kagura by warping in between them as they're clashing and knocking them back.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: Is terrified of Kyouka and the way she killed all of Succubus Eye for no reason.
  • Evil All Along: Well Sabertooth wasn't exactly evil to begin with but she certainly wasn't one of the nicest members in the group. However upon losing the Grand Magic Games and disappearing for the rest of the arc. She shows back up again, this time working for a dark guild, Succubus Eye, as their newest member. So all pretense is pretty much dropped by this point.
  • Evil Costume Switch: As a member of Succubus Eye, she ditches the Qipao for a stripperific black robe, complete with Bare Your Midriff and Absolute Cleavage. Although it might as well be eviler just because she was hardly a good guy by any means.
  • Evil Counterpart: To Erza.
  • Evil Laugh: Indulges in one after she stabs Kagura from behind and taunted Erza.
  • Excessive Evil Eyeshadow
  • Eyepatch of Power: One of her eyes is covered by a black mark as a demon, giving her this look.
  • Foil: Surprisingly, when her backstory is revealed, she's one to Lucy. Both were abused by their father (Minerva physically, Lucy emotionally) because they did not be what their father wanted them to be (Ziemma wanted her to be a ironclad warrior and strong, Jude wanted Lucy to be a Proper Lady). Lucy ran away instead, made a new life, and made new friends, while Minerva stayed and became even worse then her father.
  • Freudian Excuse: Minerva is a total jerk, but she was not that way as a child. Her dad is at fault. Jiemma made her feel the same pain Yukino felt. Keep in mind Jiemma is her father! She's only doing what she has been told to do her whole life; be strong.
  • The Good, the Bad, and the Evil: She's the evil to Kagura's bad and Erza's good.
  • Hate Sink: Her beatdown on Lucy was what turned Fairy Tail from merely annoyed by Sabertooth's arrogance to viewing them as enemies. She turns herself into Erza and Kagura's mutual enemy by holding their mutual friend hostage (though she manipulates Kagura into taking her anger out on Erza). Joining two Dark Guilds just for petty revenge hasn't done her any favors to public opinion.
    • In their most recent fight, however, Erza mentions that her fist is "crying" for fighting such a meaningless battle, though this may be more pity then actual sympathy.
  • Having a Blast: Other than space manipulation, she can also cast a spell that summons a huge statue-like being, which destroys everything around it with a colossal explosion.
  • Healing Vat: Chapter 359 has her in one of these. She lost her battle with Kyouka, but Kyouka indicated that Minerva put up enough of a fight for her to be impressed enough to recruit her into Tartarus, and even nursed her back to health... as a demon.
  • Heel-Face Revolving Door: Hoo boy. Her first Face-Heel Turn was due to her believing that a Dark Guild would be stronger than Sabertooth after their lackluster performance during the Grand Magic Games. It happens again after Kyouka slaughtered Succubus Eye and left her as the Sole Survivor simply because she put up more of a fight than anyone else in the Guild, resulting in Minerva joining Tartarus, with the body of a demon. And now? It looks like she's going to rejoin Sabertooth, after Erza beat some sense into her, and Sting and Rogue made it crystal clear that they forgive her and want her back.
  • High Collar of Doom: Her Badass Long Coat as a member of Tartarus has this.
  • Horned Humanoid: As a demon.
  • I Fight for the Strongest Side: Claims this is her reason for why she quit Sabertooth for Succubus' Eye. And she wants to move up in the ranks of the dark guilds. Needless to say, she has now achieved this goal, since Succubus Eye is basically defunct, and she has instead been recruited into Tartarus instead.
  • I Have Your Friend: She just loves this trope:
    • When Natsu raids their lodge seeking to fight Jiemma, she just teleports Happy into her arms to get him to stop.
    • She transports Lector to safety right before Jiemma tries to blast him, but tells Sting he can only see him again if Sabertooth wins.
    • She holds Millianna hostage in an energy-sapping bubble just to get a stronger reaction from Erza and Kagura.
  • In the Back: Stabs Kagura from behind right before she surrenders to Erza.
  • It Only Works Once: She apparently has a way to counter the Nakagami armor, but we have yet to see it.
  • It's Personal: She hates Erza. After joining Tartarus, she was only too happy to take over for Kyouka, and have a chance to finally settle the score with her.
    • Subverted when we see the true reason why she wants a rematch.
  • Jerkass: Let's put it this way: She makes Jerkass extraordinaire Jiemma's Kick the Dog moments look like complete child's play. And if you look at the entry just below this one, she just keeps on going. Of course they could be because he didn't have enough screen time.
  • Kick the Dog/Kick Them While They Are Down: To what could be considered Serial Escalation levels. Here is the list:
    • During the challenge on the fourth day of the Grand Magic Games, she disarms Lucy of her keys and leaves her defenseless prior to resorting to giving her a No-Holds-Barred Beatdown that doesn't stop until Arcadios begs the referee to end the match.
      • This one in particular almost started an all-out brawl between Sabertooth and Fairy Tail. She and the rest of Sabertooth arguably got extremely lucky. Had a fight actually started it's unlikely that anybody in Sabertooth would have walked away in one piece, especially given how many ludicrously powerful wizards were present in the coliseum at the time (two official Wizard Saints, one former Wizard Saint, at least four other wizards on par with a Saint... and most of them are members of Fairy Tail!).
    • She declares she's holding Lector hostage right as Sting gives her his heartfelt gratitude for saving him.
    • Lastly, she holds Millianna hostage and shows her magic being sapped in front of Erza and Kagura just to provoke them. And then she whip Millianna's back into a bloody mess of scars to pass the time while Erza and Kagura duke it out, and returns by getting Kagura In the Back just as she surrenders to Erza.
    • She even doesn't care at all when Jiemna, her own father, is hit by Sting. Yes, he was a bastard in every way but it is supposed to be her father still. Considering his treatment of her. It's not that surprising.
    • Once Erza is turned into a child with limited magic power, she challenges her to a fight to the death.
    • And now, she's doing it again, only this time she has become a demon, and she's going to show Erza her 'new power' after Erza had been fighting (not to mention tortured by) Kyouka for several straight chapters.
  • The Dog Bites Back: However causing her father to be kicked out of the guild due to his own rules was completely justified and karmic.
  • Lack of Empathy: She seems pleased when her father is gutted by Sting (though to be fair, that could be because of his treatment of her). Even moreso when she uses the chance to manipulate Sting with the promise of getting Lector back.
  • Lady of War
  • Like Father, Like Daughter: Based on what she does to Lucy, it seems she inherited his cruel tendencies too. Subverted because it was most likely beaten into her, rather than her simply taking after him.
  • Loves the Sound of Screaming: Admits this when talking about Millianna's screams as she tortured her while waiting for Erza and Kagura to finish their match.
  • Makeup Is Evil
  • Manipulative Bitch: Vying with Pre-Time Skip Ultear for the top spot. Makes Sting believe Lector's life is on her hands to get him to fight with the Power of Friendship.
    • She also uses Millianna as a hostage to give Erza and Kagura more incentive to fight each other. Erza seems to catch on and keeps a level head, but Kagura quickly flies into rage and starts doing exactly what Minerva wants.
  • No-Holds-Barred Beatdown: To Lucy on Day 4 of the Grand Magic Games.
    • And later to Erza in the Sun Village arc, where Erza is a child who can't fight back.
  • Odango Hair: Her hair is tied into a pair of bun-shaped loops at both sides of her head, and a braid is present some inches below each of such loops.
  • Oh Crap: Immediately loses her composure when Erza actually manages to hurt her, and even more when Erza cuts through her magic and kicks her arrogant, qipao'd hiney.
    • And another one when she returns to Succubus Eye's headquarters to find the place trashed, the other guild members reduced to paper dolls, and Tartarus' Kyouka calling Succubus Eye too 'weak' to work for them. When Kyouka says she's about to find out if the same is true for Minerva, her eyes go wide with fear.
  • Opera Gloves
  • Our Demons Are Different: Probably even moreso than the other demons from the Book of Zeref; she was human, and following her defeat at the hands of Kyouka, has been resurrected as a demon.
  • Qipao: Only while in Sabertooth.
  • Recurring Boss: To the point where she's clearly aiming to become Erza's Arch-Enemy.
  • Sadist: She takes way too much pleasure in doing horrible things.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here!: Leaves Sabertooth at the end of the Games after their defeat, and shows up later in the next Arc as a member of Succubus Eye.
    • And later, as a member of Tartarus.
  • Shameful Strip: As a child, she was forced to strip naked as a punishment by her own father.
  • Smug Snake
  • The Social Darwinist: She believes she deserves to die by Erza's hand for being weak enough to fall to darkness. Eventually snaps out of it after being saved by Sting and Rogue from Marde Guille.
  • The Sociopath: Almost takes it to an art form.
  • Sore Loser: Of the worst kind. Just because she lost to Fairy Tail in the Grand Magic Games, she flees Sabertooth and joins a Dark Guild to exact revenge on them. This clearly contrasts most of her former guild-mates, who have accepted their defeat and vow to create a more caring atmosphere at Sabertooth.
  • The Starscream: She does not hesitate to usurp her father and kick him out of the guild the moment he was beaten.
  • The Stoic
  • Supreme Chef: No seriously.
  • Unusual Eyebrows
  • Used to Be a Sweet Kid: She used to be a regular girl. Her father's ideals turned her into what she is today.
  • Villainous Breakdown: In quick succession, when Erza manages to see through her magic and hit her, Minerva's arrogance gives way to blind rage. When her magic proves ineffective against Erza's new armor, she starts losing it and yelling for Erza to stop. And finally after Sabertooth loses the final round, she is reduced to a sobbing wreck.
    • Suffers an even worse one after Erza easily beats her again even after she turned into a demon. She turns into a Death Seeker as a result until Sting and Rogue save her.
  • Would Hurt a Child: While her Succubus Eye superior turned Ezra into a child, she takes too much pleasure in beating her like that.
  • You Are Not Alone: The reason she wants Erza to kill her is a belief that, because of her actions, no one wants her around. Erza finds this ridiculous and tells her there is someone out there who wants her. Sting and Rogue then show up specifically looking for her to bring her home.

A childhood friend of Erza's. Once a slave in the Tower of Heaven, he was corrupted by Ultear into becoming a servant of Zeref. Acting as a member of the Magic Council, he sets in motion a plot to revive the black wizard, but is defeated by Natsu and Erza. He returns without his memories after being revived by Oración Seis, but decides to atone for his past actions and dedicates himself to suppressing evil wizards wherever he finds them.

  • The Ace
  • Accidental Pervert: He accidentally gropes Erza.
  • Adorkable: For all his badassery, he still shows signs of this when he and Erza are sheepishly apologizing to each other after the infamous Almost Kiss, or when he freaks out after accidentally touching her breasts at Ryuzetsu Land. Often overlaps with The Comically Serious.
  • Almost Kiss: When he reunites with Erza post-Time Skip; it's ambiguous in the manga, but the anime clearly shows him pushing her away before their lips touch.
  • Amnesiac Dissonance: He gets a moment to wallow in angst after being called out by Erza when they meet up during the Nirvana arc.
  • Arch-Enemy: To Kagura, who says he "took everything away from her" and crafted Archenemy for the sole purpose of killing him.
  • Arc Villain: Of the Tower of Heaven arc.
  • Bad Liar: According to Erza, he has always been a terrible liar: as a child, he tries to pass himself off as the mastermind behind an escape attempt in the Tower of Heaven to cover for Erza, but Erza gets the blame anyway (ironically, she was covering for their friend Sho, the real mastermind); later, he lies to Erza that he has a fiancée to give them a reason to remain apart, but Erza doesn't buy it any more than his guildmates do.
    • Subverted entirely during his time under Ultear's possession, as he is able to convince the council not only of his good nature, but that they need to fire Etherion, fakes being under control to keep Erza from killing him, tricks her into believing he had a twin, and gets everyone that Erza knew as a child to believe Erza had gone mad with power.
  • Badass: He was a member of the Ten Wizard Saints, mages renowed by their immense power, when he had only half of his entire power. So, it's no surprise that he's also one of the strongest characters in the series, such that, like Jura, he has to be weakened somehow, be it by directly weakening him or giving him some reason not to use his full power so that his opponents, even the aftermentioned Jura, have a chance against him. And when he's able to fight without restrictions, he's shown to be capable of defeating four of the Oración Seis in a 4 vs. 1 battle.
    • Badass Boast: When against the Oración Seis (Four, since Brain was out of commission and Hoteye's claims are true) in the Tartarus Arc.
      Jellal: "I'll be enough."
    • Badass Longcoat: His general attire, though it differs among the Tower of Heaven, Nirvana, and Grand Magic Games arcs.
    • Handicapped Badass: Crushed his own eyes to dispel Midnight's illusion. Time will tell if the blindness remains.
  • Barrier Man: It turns out that he, along with two other random men who served on the council, is acting as an unwitting seal to an Anti-Magic super weapon. So long as he's alive, it shouldn't be possible to activate. By the time this is revealed, the other "living" seals have already been killed.
  • Beleaguered Childhood Friend: Sometimes is this for Erza.
  • Big Bad Wannabe: He is the first recurring villain introduced in the series, and his goal is to resurrect Zeref, the true Big Bad. Then it turns out he is being manipulated by his subordinate, and that Zeref was never dead to begin with.
  • Brainwashed and Crazy: Though he recovers when Natsu beats him.
  • Break Her Heart To Save Her: Jellal tries to do this to Erza by making up a story about a fiancée so she'll give up on him. She knows it's a lie, but chooses not to call him out on it.
  • Broken Aesop: Want to save your friend from unspeakable acts? Run and save her. You'll succeed, but you'll be tortured and end up Brainwashed and Crazy. Then you'll enslave all of your other friends, murder at least one of them, and try to resurrect the most terrible wizard ever. Then someone who is better at the shounen archetype punches you in the face, freeing you from your insanity.
  • Casting a Shadow: Capable of using Darkness Magic.
    • Dark Is Evil: Since he hasn't shown any Darkness Magic spells since he was freed from his possession...
  • Chekhov's Gun: He disguises himself as his Edolas counterpart Mystogan during the Grand Magic Games. It even lets him evade Council arrest when he's unmasked, but it doesn't fool them for long.
  • The Chessmaster: During the Tower of Heaven arc. He even had a chess board to represent the characters.
  • Childhood Friend Romance: With Erza.
  • The Comically Serious: He joins Fairy Tail's B team disguised as Mystogan. When Erza calls him, he tells her to shush.
    • His humiliating loss to Jura thanks to interference from his guildmates, after which he shamefully trudges back to B Team.
  • Cover-Blowing Superpower: He attempts to use a powerful signature spell while undercover in the Gran Magic Games. Ultimately defied in the end by Ultear, who forces him to throw the match before he can blow his cover to the whole audience.
  • Dark Messiah: When he was Brainwashed and Crazy.
  • Death from Above: His Grand Chariot spell and his attempt at casting Abyss Break.
  • Death Seeker: Carries this tendency after being told of his villainous deeds by Erza. It's Erza's duty to snap him out of it.
  • Elemental Powers: Has been shown to use Fire, Darkness, and Light Magics. While he hasn't shown other elemental magics directly yet, he is capable of using Abyss Break, which needs the user to know Fire, Earth, Water, and Wind Magics.
  • Evil Former Friend: To Erza, at first.
  • Evil Gloating: Mocks Simon after his Heroic Sacrifice. Natsu's response is to punch him in the face.
  • Expy: The average Rave Master fan will take one look at him and say "Holy crap! It's Sieg Hart!" There's absolutely no physical difference between the two, particularly before Mashima's Art Evolution, and he has similarly-named spells and occasionally makes the same two-finger gesture Sieg always does when using his magic. It's supposedly just Fanservice, though.
  • Eye Scream: He intentionally injured his own eyes during his "fight" with Zero, in order to break Midnight's illusions.
    • The condition of his eyes is debatable, given that he was able to open them afterwards, with no visible injuries directly to his eyeballs (although they were still bleeding).
  • Facial Markings: Has a tattoo around his right eye.
  • Fallen Hero: His childhood personality is actually the most hero-like of any character. Unfortunately for everyone, Ultear brainwashed him into becoming one of the most despicable criminals in the series. It's made even more tragic since he loses any true semblance of freedom and a lifetime of happiness with Erza.
  • Gambit Roulette: His plan to revive Zeref includes using his psychic projection disguised as one of the council members to manipulate them into firing Etherion and then having the R-System absorb the enormous magical energy, which would provide enough to commence the ritual.
  • Guest Star Party Member: Of Fairy Tail's B team.
  • Guilt Complex
  • Heel-Face Revolving Door: Starts as a Face, then brainwashed into becoming a Heel, and finally loses his memories and becomes a Face again. After regaining his memories and founding Crime Sorciere, he is firmly of Face status.
  • Insecure Love Interest: He feels that he has no right to be with Erza after all he has done.
  • Instant Runes: He mimics Mystogan's magic to keep his disguise in the Grand Magic Games authentic.
  • Interrupted Suicide: After he casts a self-destruction spell on Nirvana, he casts the same one on himself. It takes time to work though, and Erza talks him out of it.
  • I Want My Beloved to Be Happy: After his reunion with Erza after the time-skip, he makes up a story about a fiancée so she'll give up on him because he believes he has no right to fall in love with someone who "walks in the light", and he only wishes for Erza to be happy.
  • It's Personal: His reason for fighting the Oración Seis without Merudy's help.
  • Kissing Discretion Shot: Though it turns out to be an Almost Kiss.
  • Knight of Cerebus: While the preceding Phantom Lord arc might have been the first to shift the series to Darker and Edgier overtones, Jellal was the first villain to conclusively kill a heroic character outside of a flashback (a trait that was only copied by Future Rogue several arcs later). He also has an incredibly dark and sad past, and was (and still is) one of the most powerful characters in the series, such that to defeat him, Natsu had to activate Dragon Force.
  • Laser-Guided Amnesia: In the Nirvana arc. He gets his memories back over time, though.
  • Light 'em Up / Star Power: His primary magic is Heavenly Body Magic, which revolves around astronomical objects, but is much more than that.
  • Living Macguffin: He is the only key to Face still alive.
    • Not anymore (he's still alive, but no longer a key).
  • Lightning Bruiser: While not physically strong as Laxus, for example, Jellal's still strong enough to incapacitate Natsu with a few punches and kicks, and even to block Cobra's poison-enhanced punch and subsequently throw him against Racer with great force with just a backhand swipe; is fast enough to keep up with even Erza, Natsu and Racer even when not using Meteor; and can take incredible amounts of damage and keep going, such as Natsu's Dragon Force attacks, and even survive the subsequent explosion of condensated Etherion, which would destroy anyone in atomic level, even when he himself was in the center of it. He was, after all, one of the Ten Wizard Saints...
  • Made a Slave: Some fans consider it an ironic Tear Jerker that the only time he was truly free was when he didn't know the value of it.
  • Meaningful Name: "Jellal" is a verbal variation of the Arabic word (Jalal) for "greatness".
  • Mistaken Identity: Wendy "remembers" the time he saved her life, but it was actually Mystogan. Which makes it particularly sad if you recall that Jellal was happy to have learned he supposedly saved someone, in spite of all the pain he caused...
  • Mr. Fanservice: Acknowledged both In-Universe and out as one of the more attractive guys, particularly after he loses the crazy.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: After getting amnesia and being told by a very pissed off Erza about his past deeds.
  • The Paralyzer: His Bind Snake spell has this effect.
  • Person of Mass Destruction: Has quite a few spells that are incredibly destructive, such as Abyss Break, Self-Destruction Spell, Grand Chariot, and probably also his strongest magic, the Sema spell.
  • Playing with Fire: Capable of using Fire Magic strong enough that Natsu compares eating it to eating Etherion, and the effects are also the same, as Natsu enters Dragon Force by consuming it.
  • Really Dead Montage: Except since they Never Found the Body, he gets to come back.
  • Redemption Equals Death: They pull this on him twice, and he's still alive, too.
  • Reformed, but Rejected: After developing amnesia and deciding he's a good guy, it takes several chapters/episodes to fully convince Erza he's on her side, and being shot in the gut to convince Natsu to accept a power-up from him. After helping save the day, he's promptly arrested.
  • Ship Tease: He gets so much with Erza that even after personally trying to sink the ship, they're still the most strongly hinted couple.
  • Shirtless Scene: During the Tower of Heaven arc his shirt is destroyed. When he wakes up he's still half naked.
  • Shoot the Shaggy Dog: Turns out that the key Grimoire Heart went after while he was running rampant did nothing. He spent eight years as a puppet and is doomed to stay in prison with a death sentence so he could be a momentary diversion for gathering a useless trinket.
  • Single-Target Sexuality: Jellal has never shown the slightest interest in any other girl than Erza. And he spent several years traveling with two very hot female guildmates, so that's saying a lot.
  • Slasher Smile: For pretty much for the entirety of the Tower of Heaven Arc.
  • Slouch of Villainy
  • The Smart Guy: On Fairy Tail's B Team in the Tournament Arc, disguised as Mystogan.
  • Soap Opera: In Jellal alone we have clones, a twin (for a short period of time), the mysterious look-alike, brainwashing, a coma, and amnesia. There's also the convoluted relationship with Erza.
  • Spell My Name with an S: Before the official Del Rey translation, everyone though his name was "Gerard". At least no one called him Jaker.
    • On a lesser note, there's been some debate over how to spell his last name (some call it "Fernandes"), but the Kodansha translation has settled on "Fernandez".
  • Star-Crossed Lovers: With Erza. Mashima even drew a picture of them for Tanabata, a festival linked to the most famous Star-crossed lovers story in Japan.
  • Start of Darkness: He was a child slave who was brainwashed in a single moment of weakness.
  • Unresolved Sexual Tension: With Erza.
  • Unwitting Pawn: Ultear's before his Heel-Face Turn.
  • Utopia Justifies the Means: His main motivation as a villain.
  • Vigilante Man: Becomes this after the time skip. He forms Crime Sorcière (whose only other members are Ultear and Merudy) that purposely deals with and eliminates dark guilds (an act prohibited by the Magic Council). Also, he's on the hunt for Zeref.
  • Villainous Breakdown: In the Tower of Heaven arc, he maintains a calm demeanor even in the face of a furious Erza's insults and attacks. He keeps this attitude while fighting Natsu... until he starts destroying the Tower, sending Jellal into a rage. He wants to kill Natsu so badly at this point that even when Erza, who he needs alive for his plans, gets in the way to stop him, he fires off a deadly attack with little hesitation. When the attack kills Simon, he laughs maniacally and calls the action pointless because he still wants to kill Natsu and Erza. When Natsu gains the upper hand in Dragon Force, he engages a Motive Rant, his speech becoming progressively more unhinged, and he finally prepares an attack that will destroy the tower (which is what pissed him off in the first place), convincing himself that he can rebuild it even though he'd thrown away all his unwitting slaves by this point.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: The reason he tries to revive Zeref in the Tower of Heaven arc is because he thinks it would create a world where everyone could be free (i.e., having total control and taking away everyone else's free will).
  • Woobie, Destroyer of Worlds: He tries to bring back Black Wizard Zeref and is willing to kill just about anyone who tries to stop him with power that got him counted as one of the Ten Wizard Saints (oh, and it was Siegrain who qualified, who Jellal made appear more real by giving half his power to). All because he spent his entire childhood as a slave and someone came up to him and said "Hey, want to make sure that you never go through this again?"...and then that said person brainwashed him, drove him insane, and then Mind Raped him for eight years.
  • The Worf Effect: One-shoted by Midnight just to show how powerful Midnight really was.
    • Worf Had The Flu: According to Word of God, he was only beaten because he had wasted a massive amount of magic power and was severely injured by using his Self-Destruction spell. Indeed, when Jellal went up against Midnight (and Racer, Cobra, and Angel) again at full power, he wiped the floor with him, with the only injury Jellal sustained being self-inflicted.
  • You Gotta Have Blue Hair

Ultear Milkovich

Affiliation: Grimoire Heart (former), Magic Council (former), Crime Sorcière
Magic: Arc of Time, Maker Magic (Ice-Make), Thought Projection
Guild Mark: Back (Red)

Click here to see her pre-Time Skip appearance

A former member of Grimoire Heart and leader of the 7 Kin of Purgatory. She uses Arc of Time, which gives her control over time for inanimate objects. She is also the daughter of Ur, whom she initially believes to have abandoned her. She manipulates a good number of villains throughout the series (Lyon, Jellal, and even Hades) to achieve what she wants. However, after finally realizing the truth of her Parental Abandonment, she turns over a new leaf. After using Last Ages to save everyone's life, her Rapid Aging and successful atonement causes her to leave the guild. Now an old woman, she is happy she was born for the first time in her life.

Voiced by: Miyuki Sawashiro (JP), Lydia Mackay (EN)

  • Absolute Cleavage
  • Action Girl
  • Aloof Dark-Haired Girl: She is tall, beautiful, raven-haired, pale-skinned, aloof and graceful.
  • Alto Villainess
  • Amusing Injuries: Natsu punches her in the face hard while she is disguised as Zalty on Galuna Island. It isn't until she's in the middle of a serious discussion with Siegrain the next day that her cheek swells like a balloon.
Siegrain: "That certainly is a delayed reaction!"
  • Bare Your Midriff: Thanks to Clothing Damage.
  • Berserk Button: Being called "Ul" (or "Urtear" in the English manga). No doubt this is connected to her disdain for her mother.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Pulls one on Natsu to save him from Future Rogue, who had clearly defeated him.
  • Broken Ace: She's beautiful, intelligent, and very powerful with several magical disciplines under her belt. She's also a bitch with Mommy Issues. At least pre-Heel-Face Turn.
  • Broken Bird
  • Cast from Lifespan: Last Ages doesn't kill her immediately like she thought it would, but it does turn her into a elderly woman.
  • Chronic Backstabbing Disorder
  • Clothing Damage
  • Crystal Ball: Also her Weapon of Choice.
  • Dangerous Forbidden Technique: Last Ages, which is a Reset Button that sends the world back a certain amount of time in exchange for the user's time, leaving them to the edge of their lifespan.
  • Dark Action Girl: While a member of Grimoire Heart.
  • Detached Sleeves
  • The Dragon: She is frequently seen working for some new Arc Villain trying to bring back Zeref or one of his creations.
    • Dragon with an Agenda: And she always has some goal other than that. In other words, she always has ultearior motives.
    • The Starscream: In the Sirius Island arc, she tries to get Gray to use Iced Shell on Hades, which would essentially kill them both, as she wants Zeref's power all to herself. She didn't count on Gray playing along though.
  • Dub Name Change: In the Kodansha translation of the manga, she states her real name is "Urtear" as she is "Ur's tear", and that she changed her name to "Ultear" in contempt of her mother.
  • Easily Forgiven: Subverted. The reason Merudy forgives her is thanks to her "emotional connection", letting her know how devastated she was by her own actions and the honest love she had for her. The fact that she tries to kill herself before letting Merudy "stain her hands" also helps.
    • Played straight with her other guildmate Jellal, who doesn't show the slightest bit of hostility to her despite knowing that she has royally screwed up his life.
  • Eerie Pale-Skinned Brunette
  • Evil Costume Switch: Ultear goes from the Miko-like costume she wears as a member of the Magic Council to a current Stripperific outfit when she is revealed to be the one who manipulated Jellal.
  • Evil Gloating: Tries it on Gray in the Sirius Island arc. His response is to punch her in the face.
  • Fan Disservice: Her Last Ages destroys a large portion of her clothing, as well as her skin and ultimately ages her body into a shriveled old woman.
  • Foreshadowing: Ultear's Heel-Face Turn is foreshadowed as early as the Galuna Arc. She really had no reason to restore the destroyed village. It gained her nothing and even would have given a hint to an enemy smarter than Natsu just how powerful she really is. Ultear even brushed off Jellal's query with a filppant answer. It's an early indication that Ultear is not all bad and operates under an I Did What I Had to Do philosophy.
  • Form-Fitting Wardrobe: Her clothes cling to her body rather well, and in just the right ways.
  • Freudian Excuse: The reason why she is so hateful towards her mother and does what she does as a Grimoire Heart member is because she thinks she had been abandoned by her mother after seeing her with Gray and Lyon; in truth she was kidnapped and Ur was told she was killed. She also tries to create the World of Great Magic so she can go back in time and be with her mother again.
  • Furo Scene: In the manga, after Jellal is defeated, readers are treated to a scene of Ultear taking a bath and talking to Hades.
  • Ghost Memory: After she falls into the ocean while fighting Gray, Ultear experiences Ur's memories since Ur's body was turned into water and drifted out to sea. This finally allows Ultear to realize that she was never abandoned in the first place and just how much Ur cherished her.
  • Giant Waist Ribbon: To help show off the hips.
  • Girlish Pigtails: When she was younger.
  • Going Commando: Her dress' leg slit is high enough to tell she's not wearing anything under there.
  • Good Costume Switch: More subtle this time, but she stops wearing makeup and her clothes are generally less revealing after she leaves Grimore Heart.
  • Good Scars, Evil Scars: Later gets one in the shape of an X on her back.
  • Green Thumb: Just a part of what she can do with her time magic.
  • Hair Decorations: There's an emerging pattern here.
  • Heel-Face Turn: After finally cluing in that she was loved by her mother all along, Ultear helps Fairy Tail defeat Hades by restoring the destroyed Sirius Tree and Fairy Tail's magic along with it. She later joins Crime Sorcière.
  • Heel Realization: Has one after her Heel-Face Turn, when she backs out of killing Rogue before he has a chance to turn into his evil future self, which makes her realize just how far she is from being redeemed.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: She uses her Last Ages spell to send the world back in time for one minute at the cost of her own time, leaving her a frail, elderly woman. Her spell causes everyone in the world to see into the future for that one minute, which proves invaluable to the wizards fighting for their lives against the dragons.
    • Senseless Sacrifice: Subverted. She thinks she was unable to save a single life as she intended to rewind time for much more than one "measly" minute, not realizing her spell saved countless lives.
  • Hime Cut: As a Magic Council member and her initial miko attire.
  • An Ice Person
  • Improbable Weapon User: Her weapon of choice is a Crystal Ball.
  • Interrupted Suicide: She tries killing herself to avoid having Merudy stain her hands by killing her in revenge for destroying her town, but Merudy saves her.
  • Karma Houdini: After everything she did and all the people she killed, she never really answers for it. Even being aged by Lost Ages seems more of a token gesture.
  • Kick the Dog: During the Tenrou Island Arc, Ultear was more than willing to kill Juvia. Not because it was necessary to obtain Zeref (she had already done so by then) but simply as revenge against Gray for being her mother's student.
  • Lady of War
  • Lamarck Was Right
  • Leotard of Power: Her new attire after the Time Skip.
  • Love Redeems: Both her genuine love for her mother and Merudy change her for the better.
  • Makeup Is Evil: She's stops wearing lipstick post Heel-Face Turn.
  • Manipulative Bitch: Was her default mode for many years. She gets better, though.
  • Meaningful Name: Ur named her "Ultear" because she was so overwhelmed with happiness at Ultear's birth that she cried tears of joy. It's for this reason that some people insist Ur should be named "Ul".
  • Mommy Issues
  • Nice Shoes
  • Onee-sama: For Merudy.
  • Parental Abandonment: Played with. Ultear was taken by Ur to a magical research lab because she had too much magical power in her body and it was killing her. The lab people, being less than moral, told Ur that Ultear died, then continued their cruel research on the girl. When she managed to escape, she saw Ur together with Gray and Lyon and assumed that she was abandoned and replaced by her mother, leading her aspirations to go back in time to before she hated Ur and reclaim the happiness she thought she was denied. What she failed to realize was that her mother thought she was dead. As for her father, he reportedly left them both at childhood.
  • Parental Substitute: To Merudy.
  • Pet the Dog: Randomly restores the village of Galuna Island with her time magic after it is destroyed, which she lampshades.
    • Her relationship with Merudy is also her main redeeming factor as a member of Grimoire Heart. She spared Merudy as a child while destroying her hometown, and went out of her way to make sure Merudy would come with her while trying to make a getaway with Zeref.
  • Pimped-Out Dress: Not to the extent of being covered in jewels, but it's pretty fancy. In the manga it's even animal print.
  • Pinball Projectile: Her preferred method of fighting.
  • Poor Communication Kills: Her whole dilemma would've been solved if she had bothered to actually reveal herself to Ur instead of assuming everything.
  • Power Perversion Potential: There's not exactly anything stopping her from aging her opponents' clothes out of existence.
  • Rapid Aging: The result of using Last Ages, even if it turned back time for a minute. She doesn't reveal this to anyone though her fellow guildmates, and only Gray manages to figure it out.
  • Raven Hair, Ivory Skin
  • Sensual Spandex: She uses it to sprout Time Arc bubbles. And yes, it looks amazing.
  • Set Right What Once Went Wrong: Her primary goal as a Grimoire Heart member, although in this case what is "wrong" is her relationship with her mother. This gets her into trouble later when she decides that since she's going to fix the past anyway, she has carte blanche to do whatever evil acts necessary to get there since those actions would also be set right via time travel.
  • Sexy Backless Outfit: Some of her outfits. Her guild symbol is on her back as well for extra fetish points. Her post-Time Skip scar doesn't make it any less appealing.
  • Shape Shifter: She is quite proficient with Transformation Magic, though not to the point that she can fool a Dragon Slayer's nose.
  • She's Got Legs: Long, sleek, and toned. She almost always has one of them bared to mid thigh at a minimum.
  • Shipper on Deck: Rather blatantly ships Jellal with Erza.
  • Shout-Out: Her "Last Ages" spell is one of many shout outs to Rave Master; in this case, it's based on a very similar spell used by Nibel, which is used to different effect but shares the Rapid Aging side-effect.
  • Showgirl Skirt
  • Sideboob: Because Absolute Cleavage just isn't enough.
  • Slave Collar: Wears what looks like a belt around her neck both before and after her costume change. Ironic once you learn of her past...
  • Spell My Name with an S: Because of her name's connection to her mother's, some argue her name should be "Urtear". The Funimation dub even calls her "Urtear" in one episode since they translate her mother's name as "Ur", but switches to using "Ultear" later. The Kodansha translation eventually sets things straight by having "Urtear" be her "real" name, and "Ultear" as a name she fashioned for herself to distance herself from her mother.
  • Strong Family Resemblance
  • Superpower Lottery: She can control time, after all.
  • Tears of Remorse: Sheds them upon learning the truth about her "abandonment."
  • Time Master: Her primary magic, the Arc of Time, lets her rewind, slow down, fast forward, or completely stop the "time" of an object. It's useless on people though, like so many other spells in this setting that would be completely broken otherwise.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: Over the Time Skip.
  • Vapor Wear: Seriously, hasn't anyonenote  heard of a bra?
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: Even after her Heel-Face Turn, she seriously contemplates killing Rogue so he won't turn into the evil Future Rogue. It's quickly subverted when she realizes she can't go through with it.
  • The Woman Behind The Man: For Lyon and Jellal.
  • Woman in White: While on the Council.
  • Yandere: Appears to be one for Zeref pre-Heel-Face Turn.
  • You Have Outlived Your Usefulness: She doesn't say it to Jellal's face, but she did admit as much to Hades. Subverted over the Time Skip when she breaks Jellal out of prison.
    • Also applies to Hades himself, as shown when she tries to get Gray to kill him.
  • You Remind Me of X: The reason she developed a soft spot for Merudy was because she reminded her of her younger self.
  • Zettai Ryouiki: Grade A.

Another former member of Grimoire Heart's Seven Kin. She has power over people's physical and emotional senses using her Maguilty Sense magic. She's been very attached to Ultear ever since she saved her from her destroyed hometown, which Ultear ironically destroyed without Merudy knowing. Even after learning the truth, her love for Ultear leads her to leave Grimoire Heart with her.

  • Absurdly Sharp Blade: Her Maguilty Sodom spell can somehow cut Juvia's body, which is made of water.
    • It's explained that the blades don't so much cut her, as they force the pain receptors in her brain to make her feel as though she's been cut.
  • Action Girl
  • Anguished Declaration of Love: She declares her familiar love for Ultear after she tries to commit suicide to atone for all the things she had done (including destroying Merudy's hometown).
  • Badass Cape
  • Bare Your Midriff: Thanks to Clothing Damage.
  • Berserk Button: She is normally fairly unemotional pre-Heel-Face Turn, but it turns out hurting "her" Ultear is a huge one for her. For that reason, she wants to kill Gray more than anybody else on the island during the Sirius Island arc.
  • Clothing Damage
  • Dark Magical Girl: At first.
  • Defrosting Ice Queen: After the Time Skip, she's grown from a very serious, angry kid into a very relaxed, cheerful person.
  • Detached Sleeves
  • Didn't See That Coming: Was clearly not expecting Juvia to be so powerful during their battle on Sirius Island.
  • Doomed Hometown: Merudy cooperates with Ultear's schemes because Ultear saved her when her town was destroyed and told her that awakening Zeref would allow her to restore it. When Zancrow informs her that Ultear destroyed her town in the first place, she does not take it well.
  • Emotionless Girl: At first.
  • The Empath: Her magic allows her to share someone else's emotions after coming into contact with Juvia.
  • Evil Counterpart: To Juvia at first.
  • Fanservice Pack: After the Time Skip, the years have been kind to her.
  • Form-Fitting Wardrobe
  • Genki Girl: Post-Time Skip
  • Green Eyes
  • Hair Decorations: Wears some sort of gold wing-like headgear around her ears in her introduction.
  • Happily Adopted: Ultear found her as a child and took her in. Merudy loves Ultear very much and even refers to Ultear as her mother in a flashback. That doesn't change even after she finds out Ultear was the one who destroyed her hometown.
  • Headphones Equal Isolation
  • Leotard of Power
  • Little Miss Badass: Erza is hesitant to fight her in when they first meet. Digest that for a moment.
  • Morality Pet: To Ultear.
  • Pet the Dog: She helps Juvia out after their battle when Juvia faints.
  • Rapunzel Hair: Post-Time Skip.
  • Rei Ayanami Expy: A young girl with short pink hair and special magical abilities who shows little to no emotion and is extremely devoted to her parental figure. By the timeskip, she has defrosted into a very outgoing and emotional person.
  • Robo Speak: When she's introduced, she pauses between words and refers to her mission to "exterminate" and "annihilate" her enemies as the "prime directive", and she even gave the members of Fairy Tail numbers for the order in which she would kill them.
  • Rose-Haired Sweetie: She starts out as The Stoic, but becomes a perfect example of the cheerful subtype after the timeskip.
  • She Is All Grown Up: Contrast her pre-Time Skip appearance with her post-Time Skip appearance. No, you're not the only one who noticed.
  • Shout-Out: Subverted; according to Word of God her name just came up out of the blue, then he saw that the name was very similar to a certain RPG character, he regretted it.
  • Spell My Name with an S: There was some debate among the scanlators regarding whether it's "Meldy" or "Meredy" before the Kodansha release went with "Merudy".
  • The Stoic: At first.
  • Storm of Blades: One of her spells, Maguilty Sodom.
  • Sugar and Ice Personality: When she's introduced, she's a stoic and cold girl who only shows her warm and somewhat childlike side to Ultear. Over the Time Skip, her warmer personality took over.
  • Synchronization: Her magic allows her to connect two or more people's physical and emotional senses to one another, including her own.
  • Taking You with Me: Adds herself to the Gray-Juvia link when Juvia begins overwhelming her so that, no matter which girl dies, so will Gray. Juvia stops her.
  • Three-Point Landing
  • Underestimating Badassery: Does this to Juvia due to seeing her as a weakling. It isn't until she stated that Gary is the top on her list of hits that she realized what a mistake she made.
  • Undying Loyalty: To Ultear. Even after finding out that Ultear was the one who took everything away from her in the first place, Merudy loves her and wants to stay by her side no matter what.
  • When She Smiles: Noted by Juvia.
  • Yandere: Shown to be one towards Ultear at first, stating that she would kill Gray for hurting "her" Ultear. She seems to have grown out of it by the timeskip.
  • You Gotta Have Blue Hair: Her hair is pink.
  • You Killed My Father: When she finds out her dear Ultear was the one who destroyed her home and killed everyone she knew and loved and confronts her about it, this trope is pretty much what Ultear reads her nasty Death Glare to mean after admitting to doing just that.
  • Zettai Ryouiki: Grade A.

    Quatro Cerberus
One of the official guilds in Fiore that participates in the Grand Magic Games.
  • Butt Monkey: Clearly shown in the Magic Games. They only win one event, obtain low scores in the rest, and are usually the first ones to be defeated. In the battle rounds, most members are curb-stomped just to show how strong their opponents are. They ultimately end up taking last place in the tournament.
    • Hell, Mashima ultimately decides to not to give any members except Bacchus a profile, lumping the others into one page to avoid having to make up any distinct personalities.
  • Catch Phrase: "Wild Four!"
  • Collared by Fashion: Most members wear spiked dog collars.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: Their name can be translated as "Four-Headed Guard Hound", but they're more neutral characters.
  • Defeat Means Friendship: In the anime, Bacchus and Rocker have a friendly drinking contest with Fairy Tail after losing to Elfman and being renamed "Quatro Puppy".
  • Dumb Muscle: All of the members participating in the Grand Magic Games have low stats in intellect with the exception of the guildmaster Goldmine, and possibly Bacchus.
  • Embarrassing Nickname/Fluffy the Terrible: Elfman and Bacchus make a wager during the Grand Magic Games that if Elfman wins, then Quatro Cerberus will be renamed "Quatro Puppy" for the rest of the tournament. Elfman wins.

  • Gonk

  • Charles Atlas Superpower: The guy is obscenely powerful.
  • Drunken Boxing
  • Drunken Master: The more he drinks, the stronger he hits.
  • Facial Markings
  • Graceful Loser: Upon losing to Elfman, he calls Elfman a "real man" and collapses with a huge grin on his face. He even takes his guild being renamed "Quatro Puppy" in stride.
  • The Hedonist
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: His attacks, delivered with his bare hands, are devastating to Elfman. However, when the latter turns into his hard-skinned Lizardman form, Bacchus' unprotected hands moving at high speed get damaged by the scales.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: He's a bit of a rude pervert, as he takes Cana's bra as a reward after beating her, and proclaims that if he wins his battle against Elfman, he'll spend a night alone with both his sisters. However, he does seem to have some good traits, such as honestly congratulating Elfman for beating him during their fight, and also being good natured about honoring his bet to rename his guild if he lost. In the anime, he even has a friendly drinking match with Fairy Tail.
  • Kung-Fu Wizard: His magic involves extremely powerful blasts of energy shot from his palms.
  • Lightning Bruiser: He's so fast he can hit a target seven times in a row with what seems to be a single dash.
  • Meaningful Name: Bacchus is the Latin name for Dionysus, the Greek god of wine and drunkenness.
  • Oh Crap: After injuring his own hands against Elfman's reptilian Lizardman hide.
  • The Rival: Erza's, to an extent.
  • Walking Shirtless Scene
  • The Worf Effect: Stands out among his guildmates as he'd been established as genuinely powerful. He wins the Chariot race by stomping to destroy much of the vehicle (while hung over at that) and though he loses his battle with Elfman, the latter had to rely on strategy and endurance because Bacchus was simply too fast. The worfing sets in when he is one-shot, along with Rocker, by Ichiya, after he had withstood several attacks from both of them. On the final day of the Games, he is again one-shot, this time by a solemn Sting.

    Mermaid Heel
An all-female guild that came to be over the Time Skip.
  • Amazon Brigade
  • Butt Monkey: Not as much as Quarto Cerberus, but most of their members do badly in the games due to ether flat out silly powers, or just ending up fighting stronger enemies save Kagura. In the final day of the games, they take fourth in the overall tournament despite this.
    • Millianna also did fairly well, being the only member aside from Kagura to win any points in a battle or on the final day, and got the highest MPF score after a God Slayer from Sabertooth, a Wizard Saint, and Cana using Fairy Glitter.

Kagura Mikazuchi

Affiliation: Mermaid Heel
Magic: Gravity Magic (Gravity Change)
Weapons/Equipment: Archenemy
Guild Mark: Unknown

The ace of Mermaid Heel. While seemingly calm and collected at all times, she harbors a deep resentment for Jellal and will stop at nothing to kill him. To acomplish this, she has crafted a magic sword, "Archenemy", that she plans to only use unsheathed on him. She is also a master of gravity magic. She's also revealed to be Simon's younger sister.

Voiced by: Saori Hayami (JP)

  • Absurdly Sharp Blade: Archenemy, which is capable of dicing Ophiuchus, the supposed strongest Zodiac spirit, without leaving the scabbard.
  • Adaptation Dye-Job: Her hair went from black to purple. Interestingly, the opposite happened with Minerva.
  • Aloof Dark-Haired Girl: She is tall, dark-haired, attractive and acts as The Stoic most of the time.
  • Badass: Effortlessly Curb Stomps Yukino and her Celestial Spirits (including Ophiuchus, who apparently outstrips the Twelve Golden Zodiac Keys completely), and fights on even footing with Erza and Minerva in a three-way battle. Hell, she even Curb Stomps Erza alone by going all out.
  • Berserk Button: Being Jellal, defending Jellal, and showing her wounded teammates off in the middle of battle.
  • Berserker Tears
  • Broken Bird
  • Can't Hold His Liquor: She get's plastered pretty quickly during the Post-Games Banquet.
  • Cherry Tapping: Doesn't even need to unsheathe Archenemy to beat her enemies.
  • Clipped Wing Angel: In her fight with Erza, she actually does more with her sword still sheathed (managing to destroy Erza's most powerful defensive armor) than when she finally decides to unsheathe it. Even though the sword is hailed as capable of causing a cataclysm if it was unsheathed, the only slash she is able to deliver only gives Erza a light scratch, even though it has enough power to cut a large part of the city.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: She lived a happy life with her brother Simon until their hometown was ransacked by evil Zeref cultists looking for child slaves to build the Tower of Heaven. She escaped thanks to Erza, but Simon wasn't so lucky. After ten years of searching for her brother, she came across Millianna and learned he was killed by Jellal.
  • Defrosting Ice Queen: After the Games.
  • Designated Bullet: Why Archenemy was forged and named.
  • Evil Counterpart: To Erza. The "evil" bit is downplayed more to "antagonistic" given Minerva is the one known to be evil.
  • Expy: Of Ikaruga from Senran Kagura, down to appearance and personality, also her namesake.
  • Forgotten Friend, New Foe: She knew Erza when they were kids, and Erza was the one who saved her from being captured and enslaved. Once they recognize each other, Kagura loses her will to fight and surrenders.
  • Game Face: Normally appears with closed eyes. When her eyes are opened, she looks much more angry-looking in battle.
  • Gravity Master
  • Hair Decorations: She wears a ribbon, with the ends of the bow pointing straight up, giving them the appearance of animal ears.
  • Hime Cut
  • I Gave My Word: She holds Yukino's life in her hands as a result of their pre-battle wager.
    • Exact Words: Betting your life usually means that the victor kills you. Kagura only regards her win as Yukino's life literally belonging to her, and doesn't even try to enforce this until declaring (while drunk) that Yukino is "Mermaid Heel's property".
  • I Owe You My Life: To Erza, who saved her from being caught by Zeref cultists as a child. Kagura doesn't recognize her at first, and even tries to kill her when she finds out she was responsible for Simon's death, but once she realizes who Erza is, she decides to spare her.
  • It's Personal: She holds a grudge against Jellal for killing her older brother Simon. She crafted Archenemy for the sole purpose of killing him, and plans to only ever unsheathe it when the two come face-to-face. Once she finds out that Erza is the one who (in her words) killed Simon, she decides to use the sword on her instead.
  • Katanas Are Just Better
  • Lady of War
  • Minidress of Power
  • My Kung-Fu Is Stronger Than Yours: How she beats Libra's Gravity Magic.
  • No-Holds-Barred Beatdown: Delivers one to Erza of all people. She even cuts through her Adamantine Armor, the same armor that deflected a laser beam from Phantom Lord's Humongous Mecha!
  • Pimped-Out Dress: When invited to the Banquet in the King's palace.
  • Proper Tights with a Skirt
  • Revenge Before Reason: By her own admittance once she had found out from Millianna what happened to Simon.
  • Rule of Symbolism: She unsheathes Archenemy when her rage reaches a boiling point. She later drops it to help Erza, and Minerva picks it up and uses it to finish Kagura off.
  • Serious Business: Technically it is just a tournament and should be a friendly match. She utterly curbstomps Yukino and states that now her life "belongs to her" (though it was Yukino's idea to wager her own life in the first place).
  • Spanner in the Works: Mavis' predictions for Fairy Tail's victory go smoothly up until the moment Kagura decides to engage with Erza, believing she would be a good match.
  • The Good, the Bad, and the Evil: Consumed by rage at Jellal, she plays the bad to Erza's good and Minerva's evil.
  • The Stoic
    • Not So Stoic: She becomes physically ill for a moment when she sees Jellal at the tournament. Then she becomes downright furious when she sees Minerva take Millianna hostage, and even moreso when she learns exactly why Simon died. On a lighter side, she becomes less gloomy during the Banquet after the Games.
  • Unstoppable Rage: To say she is so angry when she finds out Erza is the reason Simon is dead that she actually unsheathes Archenemy is an understatement.
  • You Killed My Brother

    Raven Tail
A guild formed specifically to rival Fairy Tail. Introduced as a dark guild that acts outside the Balam Alliance, it becomes an official guild over the Time Skip. They disband sometime after the Grand Magic Games.

Ivan Dreyar

Affiliation: Fairy Tail (former), Raven Tail
Magic: Shikigami Magic, Illusion Magic
Guild Mark: Unknown

The master and founder of Raven Tail, as well as Makarov's son and Laxus's father. He seeks revenge against his father after being expelled from Fairy Tail for bad behavior.

Voiced by: Masaharu Satou (JP), Bruce Carey (EN)

  • Abusive Dad: He put Dragon Slayer lacrima in Laxus, which was said to save his sickly body as a child. Then it turns out Ivan plans to remove it from his body to sell it when it becomes more powerful as Laxus grows older.
  • Antagonistic Offspring: To Makarov.
  • Bad Boss: He violently beat Flare offstage for her poor performance against Lucy. Possibly due to the fact she needed outside help to win.
  • Beard of Evil
  • Gratuitous Russian: Similar to his dad, "Ivan" is a Russian-sounding name, as is "Alexei".
  • Hypocrite: Doesn't have any problems setting all of his guild's elites on Laxus, his own son, and it's implied that he would have tortured the guy in order to find Lumen Histoire. After Laxus decimates said elites, he's begging Laxus not to hurt him—on account of them being father and son.
  • Master of Illusion: He uses a magical projection of himself to sit in the rafters while he participates in the Grand Magic Games disguised as Alexei. He also uses illusion magic to trick the entire audience that he is curb-stomping Laxus just so he can have a moment to reveal his plans to his son.
  • Oedipus Complex: He is on both sides of this trope.
  • Our Souls Are Different: From the little bit seen of his magic, he seems to be able to turn souls into shikigami, which are small pieces of paper. He can also use them to cast a Kamehame Hadoken-like beam.
  • Paper Master
  • Pointy Ears
  • Trying to Catch Me Fighting Dirty: As he's the master of Raven Tail, he's also the most triumphant example of this within the group. Not only does he enter the competition himself under an alias, despite it being forbidden for guild masters to compete, but he also uses illusions to make the outcome of the fight appear to be whatever he wants it to be, and has all of his guild's elite gang up on Laxus.
  • Villainous Breakdown: He starts to lose that haughty air of his once he learns from Laxus that Makarov has been studying his guild for quite some time thanks to Gajeel's espionage. Things keep going downhill as Laxus dominates his elite members right in front of him. By the time Laxus faces him, he's begging his son not to beat him up because they're family.
  • Villainous Demotivator
  • The Worf Effect: Being Makarov's son and Laxus' father, and rumored to be a rival of Gildarts, one would expect him to be really powerful. In his fight with Laxus, he is defeated by a single punch from his son.
  • Would Hit a Girl: Implied to have done this to Flare for nearly losing.

Click here to see the imp.

A strange-looking mage who is capable of draining all of the magical energy from his opponent, thus leaving them too exhausted to use any magic themselves. He's apparently lazy and doesn't actually fight unless forced to do so, and is usually seen with a small imp-like creature nearby. He's actually apparently a puppet; the real Obra is, in fact, the imp. Oh, and he has a connection to Zeref.

Flare Corona

Affiliation: Raven Tail (formerly)
Magic: Hair Magic (Crimson Hair)
Guild Mark: Right Breast (Dark Red)

A Raven Tail mage who uses Hair Magic to fight. She was born in the Sun Village and was raised by Giants, and is really not that bad of a person; it had just so happened that because Raven Tail were the first humans she met after she left the Village, she fell into a bad crowd. She later apologized to Lucy, and has since turned over a new leaf.
