This is a list of characters from the Empath: The Luckiest Smurf story series. Names in parentheses are either the original French names or French-translated names.
Main Characters
Empath Smurf (Schtroumpf Empathie)
The main character.
- Author Avatar: Empath is partially this for his author Vic George.
- Catchphrase/Oh, My Gods!: "Great Ancestors." Shared with Polaris Psyche.
- Chick Magnet: He sometimes draws females to him without even trying.
- Cradle To Grave Character: His infancy starts in the novel, though told in a flashback story. And in a flash-forward story "Days Of Future Smurfed", Empath as a very old Smurf spends his last hours telling his great-grandson what he must do.
- The Empath
- Expy of Alchemist/Apprentice/Magician Smurf. Unintentional.
- Hates Being Touched: During his first visits to the Smurf Village, particularly by Papa Smurf.
- I Just Want to Be Normal: Of all the things Empath wants, having to be stuck with telepathic and telekinetic powers all the time is not one of them.
- Mark of the Supernatural: Has a yellow star mark on his forehead to indicate that he is a telepath and telekinetic.
- Messianic Archetype: Played up as this in the novel.
- Never Bareheaded: Averted whenever he is in Psychelia.
- Oblivious Adoption: Among the Psyches during his early years, before he found out that he was really a Smurf. He and the other Psyches were led to believing that he was merely a "prototype Psyche". Among the Smurfs, he was also oblivious to his real relationship with Papa Smurf, being his only begotten son, until his 150th birthday.
- Odd Friendship: With both Grouchy and Polaris Psyche.
- Psychic Powers: Telepathy and Telekinesis, plus clairvoyance and precognition.
- Smurfing: He generally doesn't speak in Smurf except at times when he's extremely angry or afraid. It's after his wedding to Smurfette and his first time alone with her that he starts to speak in Smurf fluently.
- The Stoic: Mostly in his early years.
- Star-Spangled Spandex: He wears a black Smurf hat and pants with white stars on it, to match the yellow star birthmark on his forehead.
- Verbal Tic: Refers to himself as "this smurf" constantly. In his later years he grows out of it.

- Carpet of Virility: Had one for one story, "Papa's Big Crush".
- Deuteragonist: He plays this role in the novel.
- Disappeared Dad: Inverted, as Empath his only begotten son is the one who's missing for most of Papa Smurf's life. Empath himself simply doesn't know his true connection to Papa Smurf until his 150th birthday.
- Ephebophile/Pervert Dad: Papa Smurf still had shades of this, though by the time "Papa's Big Crush" ended, Smurfette revealed that she could only love him as a father and Papa Smurf ended up losing interest in pursuing her. (This ended up being a May–December Romance in the alternate timeline of "Papa Smurf & Mama Smurfette".)
- Heroic BSoD: Suffered about 50 years of this when he assumed that Empath was killed by the Psyche Master.
- Luke, I Am Your Father: Reveals to Empath on his 150th birthday that he is Papa Smurf's only biological son.
- Mistaken for Pedophile: At least that's what is implied by what happens during Empath's early visits to the Smurf Village.
- My Greatest Failure: Papa Smurf sees taking his only begotten son Empath to Psychelia where he was forcibly taken from him by the Psyche Master, and then having to hear the child's "dying" screams, as this.
- You Need to Get Laid: He gets this from his little Smurfs from time to time, in the form of saying that he needs to have a female companion.
