    Penn Racing

Artha Tannis Penn

"Release the dragon!"
Voiced By: Matt Hill

Artha is the eponymous hero of Dragon Booster, an ordinary 16-year-old teenager who helped his father run the dragon stables at Penn Racing and dreamed of a life writing vid games. Probably as a result of a lifetime of stable chores, he wanted nothing to do with dragon racing and little to do with dragons. But that all changed when he was chosen by Beau, the gold dragon of legend, to be the Dragon Booster. Now he and Beau are charged with the task of saving the world from an impending dragon-human war and uniting dragons and humans once and for all time.

Parmon Sean

Voiced By: Lee Tockar

Parmon (or just Parm, as his friends call him) is Artha's best friend. At age 17, Parmon is a technical wiz, though sometimes the things he builds don't quite work out or last as long as they should in theory. Parm is not exactly the bravest member of the Penn Racing team and would much prefer to run and avoid fights. However, if his friends are threatened, he doesn't hesitate to come to their aid.

  • Beware the Nice Ones: "You can only push Parmon Sean so far!"
    • Specifically, in "Professor Stubborn" — it seems that being chased by dangerous wild creatures, trapped in an ancient temple, and forced to helplessly watch his friends disappear is what it takes to get him to fight back without fear. He even reels off a Badass Boast or two; "Bring it on! (...) I'm not going! Do you hear me?! I'm not leaving my friends!"
  • Cowardly Lion: He's easily frightened and would much rather be working on gear or vid games than trekking through wastelands or abandoned temples. Still, if his friends are in danger, he'll come through for them without hesitation, as especially shown in "Professor Stubborn".
  • Renaissance Man: Knows everything from gear to draconium to the history of Dragon City.
  • Signature Sound Effect: Although other characters will use the chicken squawk sound effect to indicate surprise or panic, it's mostly associated with Parm (mostly due to his Nervous Wreck status).
  • Smart People Speak the Queen's English: One of the only characters to have a British accent in the entire cast. Another is Rivet.
  • Team Mom: Fusses over and worries about the rest of the Penn Stables crew, especially Lance and Artha.
  • Techno Babble: One of his defining traits.
  • Took a Level in Badass: In "Professor Stubborn" and possibly in future seasons as he becomes the Power Booster.

Kitt Raada Wonn

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kitt.jpg
Voiced By: Lenore Zann

At 16 years of age, Kitt is one of the best street racers in Dragon City. She and her dragon Wyldfyr form a strong team that's difficult to beat on the racetrack. Kitt is sure of herself, strong-minded and a bit feisty. She believes in Artha and wants to help him prevent the dragon-human war in any way she can.

  • Affectionate Nickname: She often calls Artha "Stable Boy" and refers to Parm as "Professor".
  • Anime Hair: In regard to both the color and her gravity-defying ponytail.
  • Big Sister Instinct: For Lance.
  • Cool Big Sis: To Lance, and arguably the rest of the Penn crew.
  • Deadpan Snarker: If she has something to say about a situation, she'll usually say it in the snarkiest way possible, especially when addressing Artha's Idiot Ball-grabbing tendencies.
  • Leitmotif: One of the few, if only, characters to have a particular music motif.
  • The Nicknamer: 'Stable Boy' for Artha and 'Professor' for Parm.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: With Artha, although the sniping can get a little too genuine sometimes, due to her Hot-Blooded status.

Lance Patrik Penn

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/lanc.jpg
Voiced By: Kathleen Barr

Lance is Artha's little brother. When Artha gets into a tight spot, Lance will help out any way that he's able. But he's still a kid at heart and enjoys playing vid games and occasionally teasing his older brother (and perhaps causing a little mischief as well). Like most kids his age, Lance is trying to grow up, but is occasionally frustrated when the older teenagers won't take him seriously or listen to what he has to say.

    Dragons

Beaucephalis (Beau)

Beau is the Dragon of Legend, and a distant descendant of the first Golden Dragon who stopped the original Dragon-Human War.

  • Named After Somebody Famous: His name is based on Bucephalus, the steed of Alexander the Great.
  • Power Gives You Wings: In his black and gold form, Beau can sprout winglike membranes that let him glide and soar between the skyscrapers of Dragon City.
  • Silent Snarker: Like all dragons, Beau can't speak. This does not impede his ability to express his thoughts and feelings in any way, or to let Artha know how little Beau thinks of him at times.
Artha: I'm glad [Beau] really doesn't talk, or he'd be telling me what a dope I am.
    —Beau grins and nods—

Cyrano

Cyrano is Parmon Sean's green Bull-class dragon.

  • Mighty Glacier: Cyrano is big, sturdy, and strong, but his stubby legs mean he's not terribly fast. He can plow through walls and other obstacles without a sweat, but he lags behind the other dragons when forced to run for his life from an oncoming boulder.

Wyldfire

Wyldfire is Kitt Wonn's bipedal red Magma-class dragon.

Fracshun

Frachshun is Lance Penn's young blue Energy-class dragon.

    Antagonists

Word Paynn

Voiced By: Mark Oliver

Father of Moordryd Paynn and the owner of Paynn Inc., a company that manufactures gear for Dragon racing. His main goal is to start another Dragon-Human War, confident that he can control the war and whatever benefits it can give to him.

  • Big Bad: His constant attempts to start another Dragon-Human War make up the bulk of the series' conflict.
  • Big Ol' Unibrow: His unibrow extends past the edges of his face and has two hornlike curls near the middle.
  • Corrupt Corporate Executive: He owns one of the biggest corporations in Dragon City, making him one of the wealthiest and most powerful people on the planet. He uses his business as a cover for his plans of plunging the world into another Dragon-Human War.
  • Evil Versus Evil: Word Paynn wants the next Dragon-Human War to start on his terms. This puts him at odds with the ancient warlord Armeggadon, who has different ideas about how and when it should start.
  • Femme Fatalons: He wears claw-like finger sheathes on his right hand.
  • Humans Are Bastards: While he ostensibly stands to profit from a second Dragon-Human War, the other reason Word wants one to start is because he loathes seeing them reduced to mere beasts of burden and glorified racehorses and feels they should rule. With him as their sole master.
  • Hypocrite: Word wants to return the world to the dragons so that they won't have to answer to humans anymore. Humans not named Word Paynn, that is. To that end, he's willing to use Mind Control gear on dragons as well as humans in most, if not all, of his schemes.
  • Mind Control: Word's schemes often involve hypnotizing people and/or dragons into doing his bidding. His wraith dragons, for instance, are dragons that have been enslaved with black mind control gear.

Moordryd Paynn

Voiced By: Trevor Devall

Young leader of the Dragon Eye Crew and son of Word Paynn. Moordryd is one of the series main antagonists. As well as the primary enemy of Artha Penn and his crew. He rides a black dragon called Decepshun.

  • The Dragon: Moordryd is his father's chief lackey and co-conspirator.
  • Energy Absorption: His whip can latch onto a victim and drain their draconium energy.
  • Evil Counterpart: He eventually obtains his own gauntlet and amulet and becomes the Shadow Booster, a dark counterpart to Artha's Dragon Booster.
  • The Nicknamer: Refers to Artha (and sometimes the Penn Racing crew as a whole) as "Stable Brat", and to the Dragon Booster as "Dragon Boo Boo". In one episode, he calls Parmon "egghead".
  • The Rival: To Artha. Moordryd is Artha's main competitor on the racetrack and one of the Dragon Booster's most recurring foes.

Armeggaddon

A mysterious entity that mentors Moordryd to become the Shadow Booster.
  • Aborted Arc: He was set up to be the main threat going forward, but due to the show's cancellation this never came to pass.
  • Ancient Evil: Turns out he is from 3000 years ago and was one of the ones responsible for starting the original Dragon-Human War.
  • Dark Is Evil: The Emperor of the Black Draconium Empire in ancient times, utilising black Draconium powers.
  • Greater-Scope Villain: Being the one who started the first Dragon-Human War, an event which shaped history forever, this makes him indirectly responsible for everything in the series, including Word Payne's goal to replicate his feat. When he shows up in the present day and takes centre-stage, he actually eclipses Word Payne as the main threat after he shows up, necessitating an Enemy Mine with the heroes to defeat him.
  • Eviler than Thou: The threat he poses is so big that Word is willing to team up with Mortis to take him down.
  • Evil Mentor: Teaches Moordryd in how to use Mag techniques and to prepare him for the Academy.
  • Names to Run Away from Really Fast: His name is one letter off Armageddon.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: Has a pair of glowing inhuman red eyes, which manifest through the Shadow amulet and on his real person.
  • Sealed Evil in a Can: He was imprisoned in the Shadow Track for 3000 years before the Dragon Booster and his friends ended up freeing everyone trapped there.

    Down City Council of Twelve

Phistus

Voiced By: Andrew Francis

Leader of the Grip of the Dragon crew as well as the Down City Council. Phistus rides a green Bull-class dragon named Brutaris.

  • Bald Head of Toughness: Phistur is a bald man who wears a spiked helmet into battle and is a fierce and stalwart combatant.
  • Hates My Secret Identity: Phistus has the utmost respect for the Dragon Booster and wants to do everything in his power to help the Dragon Booster prevent another Dragon-Human War. By contrast, he tends to be condescending toward Artha and the Penn Racing Crew.

Pyrrah

Voiced By: Nicole Oliver

Leader of the Dragon Flares Crew. She rides a red Magma-class dragon named Phorrj.

  • Anime Hair: Her bright red hair flares out behind her head like a flame.
  • Anti-Villain: Pyrrah is unafraid to manipulate people and tries to steal the Horn of Libris in one episode, but she can be genuinely friendly and valued clean and fair races.
  • Fiery Redhead: Pyrrha has red hair and is easily angered.
  • Laser Blade: Pyrrah's weapon is a hacksaw with a blade made of crackling energy.

Khatah

Voiced By: Lee Tockar

Leader of The Inner Order Crew. Khatah rides a blue Energy-class dragon named Shock-Ra.

  • Agent Peacock: Khatah has purple hair and a fanciful embroidered jacket, but is one of the toughest crew leaders and set a record for mid-race aerial acrobatics (he can do 98.7% of the possible moves) while he was still a student.

Wulph

Voiced By: Trevor Devall

Leader of the Army of the Dragon Crew.

Kawake

Voiced By: Brian Drummond

Leader of the Will of the Dragon Crew.

  • Hiding the Handicap: Kawake is paralyzed from the waist down. He hides his condition out of shame, as it cut short his promising career as a champion Drag-Ball player.

Marianis

Voiced By: Kathleen Barr

Leader of the Dragon Fish Crew.

  • Hero with Bad Publicity: The Dragon Booster website mentions that the Dragon Fish Crew's ancestors, the Light Blue Draconium Empire, were mistrusted due to them repeatedly switching sides during the Dragon-Human war, but the show proper firmly establishes Marianis and her crew as on the side of good.
  • Hidden Depths: Marianis is a silent and relatively unimportant crew leader, but in “The Mechanist”, she is one of the three crew leaders (along with Phistus and Khatah) who helps Athra protect the Horn of Libris instead of trying to take it for themselves. Also, in "Still Waters Freeze" she gave Artha(in his Dragon Booster alter ego) an ancient Light Blue immobilizing weapon to keep it from falling into the wrong hands and help Dragon Booster in his quest to prevent a second Dragon-Human war.

Stewardd

Voiced By: Sam Vincent

Reclusive leader of the Dragon Keepers crew.

  • Non-Standard Character Design: Stewardd is incredibly short for a grown man—he's about the same height as Lance—and has large, pointy ears which make him look like some sort of halfling. Nobody else in the show looks like this.

Machina

Voiced By:

Leader of the Mechanists Crew.

Vociferous

Voiced By: Sam Vincent

Leader of the Voice of the Dragon Crew.

Chute

Voiced By:

Leader of the Dragon Winds Crew, former member of the Council.

Reepyr

Voiced By: Michael Kopsa

The human leader of the Prophets Crew.

  • Mouth of Sauron: His dragon, Propheci, is the real leader of the crew, with Reepyr being little more than Propheci's psychically controlled mouthpiece.
