!!Phantomhive household

[[folder: Ciel Phantomhive]]
-> Voiced by Creator/MaayaSakamoto (JP) and Creator/BrinaPalencia (ENG)

-->"''I am indeed arrogant, but not so much that I would irresponsibly boast that I can save anyone.''"

The current Earl of Phantomhive, the sole survivor after the mysterious and untimely murders of his parents and the burning of his mansion. With the aid of his loyal butler, Sebastian, who appeared in his service only two years ago, he has not only maintained but strengthened his family's wealth and title, while also serving as "the Queen's Guard Dog", charged with investigating and dealing with problems relating to the criminal underworld.
* AdaptationDyeJob: His hair is blue only in the anime.
* AdorablyPrecociousChild: Usually very solemn and composed, he is very committed to his jobs (running the Phantomhive family business, and fighting supernatural evil). Slightly different from the norm in that most people take him quite seriously, at least the ones who know him well.
* AdaptationalWimp: In the first two anime seasons Ciel's accomplishments are almost entirely due to Sebastian- Ciel never learns to take care of himself on a most basic level with Sebastian, and his greatest accomplishment at the climax of Season 1 is yelling for Sebastian to come save him. In the manga, he starts out on this level but improves his acting, analysis skills, ability to think on his feet, stops relying on money and power all the time, and [[ArsonMurderAndJaywalking learns to dress himself properly by the time the public school arc comes around]].
* AlwaysSaveTheGirl: He's definitely this toward Elizabeth. He threw himself in front of a {{bear|sAreBadNews}} for her first, but he's taken to doing whatever he has to do to make sure she's safe from a ship load of [[EverythingsDeaderWithZombies zombies]]. Her mother, who's normally overprotective, calmed down upon finding out that her daughter was with Ciel because she knew he'd protect her. That's a pretty high level of trust there!
** Inverted something ''fierce'' in chapter 57, as it turns out Elizabeth was more [[LittleMissBadass badass]] than him [[DeliberatelyDistressedDamsel all along]] and ends up saving ''[[DistressedDude him]]''.
** Pulled it again in chapter 58, even though Lizzie saved him. He doesn't want her trapped on a sinking ship rife with zombies and shinigami, even if Sebastian and him are staying on board, so Sebastian knocks her out and gives her over to her brother.
* AndThenJohnWasAZombie: Or, if we're going by the (albeit non-canon) second season's ending, [[spoiler:And Then Ciel Was a Demon.]]
* ArbitrarySkepticism: In chapter 86 he says people dying because of a curse is "ridiculous", despite his previous encounters with supernatural beings like demons, grim reapers, or the [[OurZombiesAreDifferent undead.]] [[{{Subversion}} To his credit, he was right:]] people weren't dying because of a curse but because of a inhalation of a poisonous gas made by the villagers.
* AristocratsAreEvil: At least extreme GoodIsNotNice, especially in the anime.
* ArrangedMarriage: With his [[KissingCousins cousin Elizabeth]]. In one of the beginning chapters he says that he was ''forced'' to marry her and does not really want to. He does seem care for her, though.
* AttractiveBentGender: "Lady Robin" is a ''very'' convincing girl.
* AuthorityEqualsAsskicking: Averted, as although he holds the highest rank in the Phantomhive Household (not to mention the fact that he works as the Queen's freaking watchdog), he's also a bit of a pansy, and likely the most physically incapable in the [[WorldOfBadass entire series]].
** Sebastian once stated that he doubts Ciel has the finger dexterity to button his own shirts.
** In an early arc, Sebastian was proven right- it took him way too long to get dressed on his own. Though at least [[DamnedByFaintPraise he's learned how to do his own buttons]] by the time the school arc comes around.
* BadassAdorable: If you can look past his obnoxiousness.
* BadassAndChildDuo: He's a [[NonActionGuy non-combatant child]] who mostly relies on Sebastian (and, less frequently, his other servants) to battle the enemies for him.
* BadassBoast: Ciel is ''very'' proud of being Earl Phantomhive, and would very much like you to know that.
* BadassLongcoat[=/=]BadassCape: ''Both''.
* BadGuysPlayPool: In one of the earlier chapters, he is shown to be playing billiard with a couple of nobles, all of whom are known to engage in villainous activities, or, at the very least, are very morally ambiguous.
* BareHandedBladeBlock: Against Alois.
* BeautifulDreamer: ''Everyone'' seems to like watching him sleep, so it can be taken in a non-romantic way as well.
* BecauseDestinySaysSo: In the manga, Ciel's goal is to torture and kill the people who killed his parents, though once this goal is complete, it is almost certain and an inescapable fate that Sebastian will eat his soul. In the anime, [[spoiler:this is averted, as Ciel becomes a demon and Sebastian is unable to take his soul...until the {{Retcon}} starting with 'Black Butler: Book of Circus']].
* BeenThereShapedHistory: He was the one who inspired Arthur Conan Doyle to continue writing mystery novels...[[ItMakesSenseInContext by telling him he orchestrated two murders, framed an innocent man who was not so innocent, and that his butler is really a demon.]]
* BeingTorturedMakesYouEvil: He used to be a nice, sweet boy before being kidnapped and made into a human sacrifice. Now, he's a cold, selfish and ruthless adolescent who won't hesitate to kill other people if they're in the way.
* BirthdayHater: His tenth birthday was the day his parents were murdered and his house was burned down. He was also kidnapped and sold off to be a slave to a devil-worshipping cult. He has good reason to despise his birthday.
* {{Bishounen}}: He is quite pretty, and his beauty is pointed out a few times by various characters throughout the story.
* ABoyAndHisX: A boy and his demon butler.
* BreakTheCutie: His parents' murders, his kidnapping and subsequent enslavement/torture at the hands of a cult traumatized him. He was only 10 years old at the time, and, now in his teens, is still dealing with this trauma.
* BrokenAce: He's a very cute young male, the head of the Phantomhive noble family, and runs Funtom Toy Company. He is shown to be extremely competent and intelligent, both at running his company and at learning new tasks. He learns to dance in a short period of time, just through Sebastian's teaching, and it is stated that he takes a variety of lessons from tutors. He also comes across as being a mostly emotionless, cold, intelligent child; he is capable of portraying himself as an engaging, happy, easygoing individual, typically when undercover, but is quick to revert to being callous when he no longer has to hide his true self. Before the loss of his parents, his life as a slave and role as a human sacrifice, however, he seemed to be a happy and energetic child. He also seems to have no qualms with lying to, stealing from, or killing others, so long as it benefits him in some way.
* ButtMonkey: He has his moments, especially in the first few episodes of the Noah's Arc Circus season. There's also the ''Ciel In Wonderland'' OVA....
* ByronicHero: A very young example, but he still fits this trope to a T. He's a charismatic, brooding, cynical, self-destructive, and isolated individual tormented by a dark past and motivated to get revenge against those who messed up his life.
* CannotTellAJoke: It takes him ''all night'' to make Undertaker even utter a simple "...hah."
* TheChessmaster: Proved it during the murder mystery arc where he planned out and orchestrated the entire event. Lacing the blame on someone else in order to complete the mission given to him from the queen, all while not only keeping suspicion off of himself, but also making himself seem like a victim. Then very end where he only tells [[YoungFutureFamousPeople a young]] [[Literature/SherlockHolmes Sir Arthur Conan Doyle]] of his scheme because [[BeenThereShapedHistory he wanted to motivate him to continue to write mystery novels.]]
* ColdBloodedTorture: Performed on him by the cultists seen in his [[DarkAndTroubledPast backstory]].
* TheComicallySerious: Compared to Sebastian's jokes and the bumbling foolishness of his servants, Ciel's serious, deadpan reactions quickly edge into hilarious, ''especially'' if it involves Sebastian and cats.
* TheCollector: Possibly; Try and count the number of tea sets he has, especially in the anime.
* CorruptTheCutie: Pretty much what [[BeingTorturedMakesYouEvil the cult]] [[BreakTheCutie did to him]]. It becomes apparent throughout the series that Sebastian may be slowly making it worse (see [[RulesOfTheInternet rule number 43]]).
* CreepyChild: Especially in the anime.
* CurtainsMatchTheWindow: Moreso in the anime than the manga.
* DarkAndTroubledPast: His parents were killed, his house was burned down, he was kidnapped, sold, and used as a sacrifice for a devil-worshipping cult. Unintentionally summoning a demon, he met Sebastian and sold his soul to him in exchange for revenge.
** Not to mention living with the secret that [[spoiler: the real Ciel, [[AngstySurvivingTwin his brother, is dead.]] Plus, he himself seems to view himself as an "extra" and his past as the asthmatic, weaker twin seems to have had an effect on his confidence and self-worth as a human being.]] From the way Tanaka and (possibly) Lizzy seem to behave once learning this, [[spoiler: he might not be the only one who sees him as being more worthless than the real Ciel.]]
* DeadpanSnarker: Anime-only, for the most part. In the manga he's portrayed mainly as TheComicallySerious.
* DealWithTheDevil: Made a deal with Sebastian to be his BattleButler in exchange for his soul.
* DeathSeeker: In the anime, he seems genuinely eager to die so long as he gets his revenge first.
* DeceasedParentsAreTheBest: His parents were described and remembered by Ciel as loving and devoted parents. Even now, Ciel [[TearJerker loves the deceased Rachel and Vincent]].
* DeclarationOfProtection: He promises Lizzy he will protect her when they're trapped in a sinking ship filled with zombies.
* DeconstructedCharacterArchetype: Of [[spoiler: WeakerTwinSavesTheDay]]. Though he's achieved so, so much ever since becoming the Earl, and done some pretty impressive things both with and without Sebastian's help, he's hiding self-confidence issues due to [[spoiler: constantly pretending to be the real Ciel.]]
* DefrostingIceKing: He has become significantly nicer towards people, at times even swallowing his pride to make Lizzy happy or showing concern for Snake and even Sebastian.
* DisguisedInDrag:
** He's forced to disguise as a girl in a fancy, pink ballgown in order to investigate the Viscount Druitt.
** He does it again when he disguises himself as Sullivan.
* DistressedDude: For all of his vocal badassery Ciel is actually not that skilled in combat. He constantly has to be saved by Sebastian as their deal dictates. However, it is not only Sebastian. As it turns out he is this for his[[ArrangedMarriage fiancée]] [[BadassAdorable Elizabeth]] too.
* TheDogBitesBack: After Ciel's parents were killed, his house was burned down, and he was kidnapped and tortured, he decided that he would seek out the person/people responsible and deliver to them the same pain and humiliation that he went through.
* DudeLooksLikeALady: Joker even had to ask if he was a boy to make sure.
* EmptyEyes: [[DownplayedTrope Downplayed]], but Ciel's eyes are much brighter during flashbacks to his childhood prior to his tenth birthday. In the present, his eyes only exude that same brightness when [[DeliberatelyCuteChild he's faking sweetness]].
* EvenEvilHasLovedOnes: Ciel deeply cares for Elizabeth and his (deceased) parents and aunt. At one point in the anime, he even stops Sebastian from hunting down Grell because he "doesn't want Lizzie to witness anymore bloodshed." In a FlashBack of chapter 131, it was revealed that he used [[spoiler: to have an inseparably strong bond with his twin brother.]]
* EvenTheGuysWantHim: Alestor certainly does. See AttractiveBentGender.
* EvilBrit: Averted. This takes place ''in'' Britain and when everyone is British then it's nothing exceptional.
* {{Expy}}: Of Literature/ArtemisFowl from Eoin Colfer's book series of the same name.
* EyepatchOfPower: Because walking around with a demon's seal available to anyone who looks you in the eyes is [[RedRightHand kind of gauche.]]
* FishOutOfWater: The circus arc shows that Ciel doesn't take well to unfamiliar territories, i.e., having to do manual labor.
** He gets better as time goes on, being much more self-sufficient in the Public School arc.
* FlatEarthAtheist: Driven away from all promises of heaven by his experiences in life, despite (or maybe ''[[FridgeBrilliance due to]]'') the fact he has a covenant with an honest, actual demon who has freely told him that there is a heaven. During his captivity in the cult, Ciel stopped believing in God.
* AGlassOfChianti: Occasionally. Given that [[DeliberateValuesDissonance this is Victorian-era England]] no one bats an eye at a 13-year old doing this.
* HatesBeingTouched: He appears to not enjoy physical contact with others, though he tolerates Sebastian and does not complain when the demon holds him, dresses him, bathes him, or picks him up. If he is stressed, he will slap someone touching him away, proclaiming, "Don't touch me so easily!" This is due to the trauma he underwent during his time in captivity.
* HeroicBSOD:
** In PTSD fashion, Sebastian's actions when trying to save Ciel from the werewolf curse in the Green Witch arc (later revealed to be toxic gas effects) trigger painful memories of his time imprisoned. This causes him to revert back to the frightened, helpless state he was in when he was 10 and held captive by the cult. In this state, he lashes out against Sebastian, and does not let any of the other adults near him. Coupled with [[spoiler: him now being blind]], he clings only to the young Finnian for safety and comfort. Sebastian has to nearly eat him to snap him out of this helpless state.
** Ciel suffers this again after [[spoiler:his unexpected reunion with his twin brother, the true Ciel Phantomhive.]]
* Hypocrite
* IllBoy: He suffers from asthma, which is triggered by stress, sudden chill, or catching a cold.
* ImprobableAge: Ciel is the leader of a popular toys and candy company, is working for the queen as a black ops/assassin, owns a mansion, and is rich from the money he inherited when his parents died. He is also only 13 years old, and this whole situation likely started around ''three years ago''. He's also highly skilled at pool to the point that he can beat a bunch of adults, despite being ''so short'' he actually has to ''sit on the pool table to make a shot''.
* InformedAbility: The first few volumes have characters like Sebastian and Madame Red waxing poetic about Ciel's [[TheChessmaster chessmaster skills]] before he does anything even ''remotely'' close to the type of planning that quallifies one as a {{chessmaster}}.
* InnocentProdigy: Sebastian outright says in the murder mystery arc that Ciel is still a child despite being the head of the Phantomhive manor.
* InSeriesNickname: "The Queen's watchdog/guard dog," one of the "evil noblemen."
* IOweYouMyLife: In a ''very'' literal sense towards Sebastian.
* IronicName: "Ciel" can translate to "Heaven". Guess what's happening to him after he's through with his revenge?
* ItAmusedMe: The reason Ciel invited Arthur to the banquet and told him what ''really'' happened-[[BrokenMasquerade including Sebastian being a demon]] was because he liked his writing and wanted him to continue.
%%* JadeColoredGlasses
* {{Jerkass}}: Ciel Phantomhive is not a nice person. He has a few PetTheDog moments, but he seems to have ulterior motives for most of these. Take, for example, all of his house staff (except Tanaka, who's only really around because he's personally served the Phantomhive family for decades). Sure he rescued Mey Rin, Baldroy, and Finny from horrible lives, and he took in Snake when he had nowhere to go, but when you realize that all of these people are, in dangerous situations, extremely useful, his taking them in starts to look decidedly less altruistic.
* KissingCousins: He is [[ArrangedMarriage engaged]] to his cousin Elizabeth.
%%* KubrickStare
* LadyAndKnight: His relationship with Sebastian can be seen as a rare [[HoYay male/male version]] of the trope, with Ciel being the Dark Lord to Sebastian's Black Knight.
* LaserGuidedAmnesia: In season 2 of the anime he doesn't remember recent events prior to the season 1 finale thanks to his soul being taken, including the death of Abberline and Madam Red or who Grell, Soma and Agni are. Sebastian convinces the others to play along and not remind him.
* LaughingMad: After all the crap he pulled during the circus arc, he ventures off to the workhouse they were told about only to find out that it's in ruin]]. Ciel finds this darkly amusing.
* LittleMissSnarker: Again, mostly in the anime, as the manga portrays him more as TheComicallySerious.
%%* LittleProfessorDialog
* LivingADoubleLife: The public is mostly unaware of his role as the Queen's watchdog, and mostly regards him as the owner of a toys/sweets company.
* MagicalEye: As proof of his contract. It's covered by an eyepatch for public reasons to avoid connections to the occult.
* ManipulativeBastard:
** With a few [[ILied well chosen words]] towards Snake, Ciel turned a former enemy into another one of his devoted servants.
** Later he does the same thing to Sieglinde Sullivan, although instead of making another servant, he's created a potential new weapon for Queen Victoria. However, not wanting Sieglinde's ultimate secret weapon of devastating power to fall into the Queen's hands, he has Sieglinds give her some valuable information, but makes her promise to keep her ultimate weapon secret to the grave. This is the first time that Ciel withholds valuable information from Queen Victoria.
* ManOfWealthAndTaste: He ''is'' British noblility after all.
* MarkOfTheBeast: The eye that isn't blue is purple and has Sebastian's seal on it. By the rules of demon contracts, the more visible the spot you put the mark, the more power you get - and what's more visible than your eye?
* MercyKill: He justifies his order to Sebastian of burning all the kidnapped kids at the end of the Noah's Ark Circus arc as this, since the kids already had a lifeless expression on their faces, due to the crazy Doctor tampering with (and possibly lobotomizing) their brains, and wouldn't get over the trauma they went through. Hence, in Ciel's mind, they are better off dead.
* MrFanservice: Despite being only 13, he is quite pretty, and has a good few nude scenes (albeit with nothing shown below the waist) to show it, along with crossdressing at times and a whole bucketload of HoYay. Can edge into FanDisservice sometimes, because, well, ''he's 13.''
* NervousWreck: As the result of a bad HeroicBSOD after being affected by a curse or rather, toxic gas inhalation. It takes some time and Sebastian nearly eating him for him to go back to normal.
* NiceHat: Ciel has many a fancy hat, particularly his top hat.
* NonActionGuy: A rare inversion, as he's the main character and he's far from being a ButtMonkey; he's simply physically weak. Ciel generally sits in the sidelines and watches as Sebastian does the fighting.
* NonIdleRich: In chapter 52, Ciel even mentions that sitting around and leisurely discussing "nonsense" with other aristocrats is not for him.
* NoPlaceForMeThere: Implied. After leaving Weston in the manga, Ciel's stated reason for breaking off his ties with the other students is that they were no longer useful, but a few of his lines imply this trope as well.
* NotSoStoic: He usually wears a cold and aloof mask, but when he breaks down, he ''breaks down''.
* OnlySaneMan: Is constantly getting exasperated with the quirks of his household a servants, including Sebastian, at times.
* NoSocialSkills: [[spoiler:In the [[FlashBack flashback]] of chapter 131, Ciel used to be very shy around guests and had a habit of hiding from them. The only people he felt comfortable talking to were his relatives, Tanaka, and his twin brother.]]
* PerpetualFrowner: More so in the anime than in the manga. Especially in the second season, where you can count on one hand the number of times he smiles, even if it's just a smirk.
* PerspectiveFlip: In the BackStory of chapter 131, it turns out that all of Ciel's flashbacks seen in past arcs are actually [[spoiler:from the perspective of his twin brother, the real Ciel since he was always following him around without him noticing. Due to the illness he inherited from his mother, he wasn't allowed to go outside and was unable to spend time with his family most of the time.]]
* PleaseDontLeaveMe: His breakdown over Sebastian's "death" in the murder mystery arc can be considered this, although later on this is Exploited, as they were acting.
* PowerAtAPrice: He sells his soul in return for help from Sebastian in succeeding in all of his goals, including killing his parents' murderer[s]. After that last goal is finished, Sebastian will be able to take Ciel's soul.
* ThePowerOfActing: Ciel is an amazing actor. It's almost scary how he can do it so well. Most of the cases he takes on require undercover work, but this is not a problem for the earl. He has slipped into many roles with ease, such as a dazzling damsel or a low class pageboy. Even when he is not undercover, he displays a façade of a lighthearted sociable gentlemen in public but his true feelings are usually dark and troubled.
* PragmaticHero: Ciel is willing to do all sorts of morally grey or even black things -- murder, blackmail, emotional manipulation, sacrificing innocent lives, etc. -- for the greater good of [[MyCountryRightOrWrong serving Great Britain's interests]]. That said, at times it seems to weigh on his conscience, and for the most part he does genuinely want to help people.
* {{Pride}}: Ciel seems ''very'' proud of his status.
* RagsToRiches: An interesting aversion in that he went ''from'' riches to (being tortured in) rags, then back again.
* RedEyesTakeWarning: Anime-only. When he gets turned into a demon, his eyes can glow an eerie fuschia.
* RedOniBlueOni:
** The Blue Oni to Alois's Red Oni.
** To a lesser extent, the Blue to ''Sebastian's'' red as well. Mostly only in the anime though.
* ReflectionlessUselessEyes: His eyes go dull when blinded in the Emerald Witch Arc.
* ReplacementSibling: [[spoiler:Ciel believes himself to be "the spare" to the true Ciel Phantomhive, heir to Earl Phantomhive. It's implied that he only thinks himself to be his twin's replacement in case he died. This is why he took his brother's name and identity.]]
* RoyalBrat: In the first episode of the first season, Ciel arrogantly claims he doesn't have to explain his actions when he throws a dart and injuries Finny. He threw a dart at Sebastian too, but his butler seems like ''he's used to it.'' And this is only the beginning.
* SavvyGuyEnergeticGirl: The Savvy Guy to Elizabeth's Energetic Girl.
* ScrewTheRulesIHaveConnections: The reason that he can usually get away with killing anyone he wants without any consequences.
* SecurityBlanket: There is a specific pillow that he cannot sleep without. Exploited, as it is later revealed that it was just an excuse to hide the blood on Sebastian's chest.
* SlouchOfVillainy: He slouches when he's about to do something particularly nasty, and unless he is standing up, almost always gives orders to Sebastian exclusively in this pose. Also, he does it in almost all the official art.
%%* SmartPeoplePlayChess
%%* TheSnarkKnight
* SoBeautifulItsACurse: Zigzagged. Ciel frequently uses his good looks to manipulate others and definitely reaps some rewards simply for being cute, but his good looks ''have'' earned quite a bit of unwanted attention.
** The two most notable examples are in the fifth chapter/second episode when his captor plans to sell him to a brothel (introducing this trope), and the entire Circus Arc.
* SoulJar: In the anime, and it's been hinted in the manga that he might be this to his father.
* SpoiledBrat: Sebastian certainly thinks so.
* StaticCharacter: So far in the manga, Ciel has had little to no character development. This rings ''especially'' true in the anime, particularly in contrast to [[{{Foil}} Alois]] who had lots of it in the second season, despite it being so short.
* TheStoic: Though he can get very angry, his default personality in the manga seems to be pretty stoic.
* StrongFamilyResemblance: He resembles his father and inherits his mother's eyes. If he were to grow up, he'd end up looking exactly like his father (according to the "Ciel In Wonderland" OVA).
* SupernaturalIsPurple: His EyepatchOfPower hides his cursed, mismatched eye that holds the symbol of his contract with Sebastian. It's purple, and glows with an eerie neon when he gives Sebastian an order.
* SympatheticMurderer: As if you didn't want to give him a big ol' hug when he ordered Sebastian to kill Baron Kelvin and set a bunch of kids on fire, [[spoiler: Doll's death on the other hand...]].
* TeenGenius: Although he's not a clichéd TeenGenius and appears to add up more with the ChildProdigy trope, he is in fact 13 and qualifies as a teenager.
* ThoseTwoBadGuys: When partnered with Sebastian.
* TroubledButCute: Both people who know his real character and people who don't have all commented how adorable he is.
* TroublingUnchildlikeBehavior: Considering his past it should come as no surprise.
* UnableToCry: He could cry when he was younger, but now he apparently can't. The closest he has come to since then was when his eyes got watery in chapter 34.
** Subverted in Chapter 89, when he fully seen crying. Granted, it's due to being subjected to a toxic gas, but still.
** Subverted again in Chapter 91, when Ciel is seen actually crying for real when Finnian tells him that he'll protect him, and Ciel says he's not worth protecting.
* TheUnfavourite: Subverted. In the past, Ciel was believed to be one since his father chose[[spoiler: his twin brother]] to be the next successor to the Phantomhive Company instead of him. In reality, however, it was only due to the asthma he inherited from his mother and lack of social skills making him unfit to be heir.
* UsedToBeASweetKid: So much he was the trope image.
* VitriolicBestBuds: One way to interpret his relationship with Sebastian.
%%* WeirdnessMagnet
* WhyDidItHaveToBeSnakes: In the manga, it's become apparent that Ciel is either afraid of his DarkAndTroubledPast, knives/sharp objects (since he always seems to react particularly stronger emotionally if they are involved), or both.
** He also doesn't like cats, because he's allergic. This leads to hilarity when Sebastian is involved due to his love of cats.
%%* WickedCultured
* WiseBeyondHisYears: But doesn't always have the maturity that comes with this troupe.
* WouldHitAGirl: He almost struck Lizzy after she destroyed his ring during a tantrum had Sebastian not stopped him.
* YouGottaHaveBlueHair: Only in the anime. The coloured title pages in the manga (and other official art by Yana) almost always show him with black or dark grey hair, making the few times it appears blue more HairColorDissonance, or possibly just a ShoutOut to the anime's designs.
* YouKilledMyFather: He wants to find and get revenge on the one who murdered his parents. In the anime it was Angela who also fused his father's remains with his wife and made them into an abomination to be used to kill Ciel, their own son.
* YourDaysAreNumbered: Ciel's apparently innate ability to sense shinigami (an ability that even Sebastian doesn't have) are an indication that he's got one foot in the grave. Either that, or it's an indication that his days ''were'' officially numbered -- until Sebastian stepped in at the last microsecond.

[[folder: Sebastian Michaelis]]
-> Voiced by Creator/DaisukeOno (JP) and Creator/JMichaelTatum (ENG), played by Mizushima Hiro in the live action film

-->"''Even though I dislike being kicked by others, I do enjoy the feeling of kicking others.''"

The eponymous character. Ciel's mysterious but charismatic and highly skilled butler; he appeared out of nowhere with Ciel two years ago and is rarely far from his master's side. In reality, he is actually a demon who has made a [[DealWithTheDevil Faustian pledge]] to Ciel; in exchange for utter obedience to Ciel, and assisting him in finding and killing the murderers of Ciel's parents, Sebastian will be allowed to kill Ciel and take his soul once his service is ended or Ciel dies.
* AboveTheInfluence: Aside from seducing and bedding for information, Sebastian seems to have no real interest in the opposite sex.
* TheAce: He's capable of doing almost everything, from cooking, cleaning, decorating, and, of course, fighting.
* AffablyEvil: Although less "evil" in the anime. Sebastian is always polite to everyone.
* AgentPeacock: Has a flamboyant demeanor, and even wears CombatStilettos in his true demon form.
* AintTooProudToBeg: Type 2 - He begged Sieglinde to save Ciel, and his desperation was sincere. Yeah, the situation was just that serious.
* AlwaysSaveTheGirl: He cares about protecting Ciel more than anything else. Not just Ciel but Elizabeth on occasion as well.
* AmbiguouslyEvil: Sure, he's a bad guy now, but who's to say that he's not bad simply because that's what Ciel needs?
* AnimalMotifs: A raven is associated with his demonic nature and has a strong affinity with cats.
* AntiquatedLinguistics: More obvious in the original Japanese than the English versions.
* BadassAndChildDuo: Aside from being a butler, he serves as Ciel's primary bodyguard/protector.
* BadassInANiceSuit: Wears a very nice butler outfit, which he usually manages to keep prim, even after an intense battle.
* BadassLongcoat: A cool coat befitting a butler of his status. [[ImprovisedWeapon It can also jam chainsaws]].
* BadassTeacher: He made Ciel into the Earl Phantomhive he is today and taught him pretty much every skill a noble is expected to know and then some.
** It's also hinted he taught Finnian how to read.
* SubmissiveBadass: Even though he's one of the most powerful characters in the series, he's still Ciel's servant and will do (almost) every single thing he orders.
* BattleButler: So much so, he's the current trope image. He's a demon butler who is good at everything, especially fighting.
* TheBeautifulElite
* {{Bishonen}}: He takes on the appearance of an extremely handsome man.
* BornWinner: It doesn't appear that he's actually done anything other than ''being a demon'' to become so awesome.
* {{Catchphrase}}: In the dub, "I am one ''Hell'' of a butler." In some manga translations, it's "I am a ''devil'' of a butler."
** Also, some variation of, "If I didn't/wasn't (insert task here), then what kind of butler would I be?"
** "A butler who couldn't (insert highly improbable situation here) isn't worth his salt."
** "Yes, my lord" would probably count too.
* TheCharmer: Have occasionally used his good-looks and sex appeal to get information from the ladies. The latest chapter 112 have returned to this trope with beautiful prostitutes.
* CheshireCatGrin: Occasionally.
* TheCoatsAreOff: He removes his tailcoat in his fight with Grell, and that's when things ''really'' go down.
* CoitusEnsues: Happens in both the anime and the manga, though in the former it was so out of the blue that it left most fans [[FlatWhat baffled]].
* ColdBloodedTorture: Sometimes performed on his/Ciel's enemies.
* CuteLittleFangs: As a human, his fangs show up every once in a while, especially when he is enjoying himself.
* CutenessProximity: When he is near his beloved cats, he even ignores Ciel.
* DarkIsEvil
* DemiHuman: In his human-like form, he still has CuteLittleFangs (at least in the manga), and his eyes are red or at least some rare shade of auburn.
** These features aren't always apparent though. His eyes glow bright red and he bares his fangs when he is about to attack or in some state of arousal.
* DissonantSerenity
* DragonWithAnAgenda: He only serves Ciel due to a contract the two made and plans to devour his soul as soon as they are done.
* EvenEvilHasStandards: He seems somewhat uncharacteristically [[http://mangapark.me/manga/kuroshitsuji/s3/c31/14 dismayed]] and [[http://mangapark.me/manga/kuroshitsuji/s3/c31/25 disgusted]] by Baron Kelvin's amusements.
** He also seems somewhat disturbed about Ciel burning down Kelvin's mansion and killing the children inside, although that may be OOCIsSeriousBusiness
* EvenTheGuysWantHim: Especially [[spoiler: [[AbhorrentAdmirier Grell]]]].
* EvilBrit: If he can be considered British; even if he's not technically, he's good at pretending.
* ExcuseMeWhileIMultitask
* FangsAreEvil
* FateWorseThanDeath: He looked pretty darn unhappy with the fact that [[spoiler:he'd have to serve Ciel for the rest of eternity]] in the anime's "second season".
* AFormYouAreComfortableWith: A demon disguising as a human butler. Not that the fanbase [[DracoInLeatherPants minds]].
* GameFace: He shows his true form very occasionally to his and Ciel's enemies, though the actual readers have still never seen the whole thing up to this point.
* GeniusBruiser: Sebastian is both an extremely capable combatant, who's easily able to take down entire groups of people, and a very cultured and intelligent demon.
* GentlemanSnarker: Especially apparent with his first interaction with [[MsFanservice Beast]], which almost borders themes of BelligerentSexualTension.
* GetAHoldOfYourselfMan: When Ciel suffers a major HeroicBSOD after being affected by a curse or rather, toxic gas inhalation, Sebastian suggests to shock him again to force him to go back to normal, but Tanaka tells him not to. Eventually Sebastian's patience runs out and he tries to eat Ciel, which finally snaps him out of it. Ciel asks Sebastian if he seriously was trying to eat him, but Sebastian says he was only 90% serious.
* GratuitousEnglish: "Yes, my lord."
* HellishPupils: Occasionally.
* HistoricalRapSheet: PlayedForLaughs in the anime, where before being tortured, Sebastian says in a light-hearted manner, "I admit it, I started the Black Plague." Considering [[ReallySevenHundredYearsOld his age]] and [[OurDemonsAreDifferent what he is]], he probably wasn't kidding.
* {{Hypocrite}}: Calls people "shameless," but has no problems with saying sexist words and do shameless deeds among countless other things.
* IKissYourHand: He does this to Ciel in a flashback.
* ImmuneToBullets: Not so much "immune" as "heals too quickly for them to really work". He doesn't particularly like being shot, even if it doesn't do much more than hurt.
* InSeriesNickname: "Sebas-''chan''" by Grell ("Bassy" in the dub, "Little Sebas" in the English manga). William never uses his name and usually simply calls him "demon" or something along the lines of "vile creature."
* IronicName: Loves cats and dislikes dogs (in the anime, at least). Named after Ciel's dog.
* TheJeeves: Well-dressed, can do any chore perfectly, polite, devoted to his master, yet can give him snarky comments just to get on his nerves. One Hell of a butler, indeed.
* KindheartedCatLover: Kindhearted?, Nope, Cat lover?, YES.
* KissOfDeath: In the Green Witch's arc, he does this to Sieglinde's evil mother.
* LackOfEmpathy: Towards humans, given his nature its hardly surprising. Although he ''does'' seem to have quite a bit of empathy for cats. He once even took in a whole lot of cats into his room out of the rain at the risk of ruining his and Ciel's plans.
* LadyAndKnight: Another way to interpret his relationship with Ciel is a [[HoYay male/male version]] of this trope, with Sebastian being the Black Knight to Ciel's Dark Lord.
* ManipulativeBastard
* MrFanservice: YES. He's a charming, [[EvilIsSexy evil]] butler in a great [[BadassInANiceSuit suit.]] He is also a bishonen. He is also shown by both the anime and manga to be very [[SexGod capable in bed.]] Hell, in his demon form, he even gains [[CombatStilettos heels.]]
* MysteriousPast: Sebastian is the most mysterious character of them all. Little is known about him other than he is a demon, not even his true name or form (though certain aspects of the later is shown, such as the fact that he wears high heels as a demon). The anime gives a few tidbits: He met a Egyptian pharaoh, he spread a famous, major, and [[HistoricalInJoke real life]] plague more then a 100 years prior to the events of the series, and he probably is of the FallenAngel variety of demon because a crapload of feathers swirl around him like a twister in his true form.
* NamedAfterSomebodyFamous: Named after the French inquisitor [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sebastien_Michaelis Sebastien Michaelis]].
* NominalHero: In the anime.
%%* NonchalantDodge
* NonHumanSidekick: He's Ciel's demonic sidekick.
* NotSoDifferent: Sebastian and the Undertaker share an ironic laugh when Ciel expresses disgust at the P4's casual murder.
* NotSoInvincibleAfterAll: Amazingly, the manga has added a few situations that Sebastian has failed to solve instantly or prevent. He's lost to the Undertaker twice (though both times he also had reasons not to go all-out). He also doesn't seem immune to curses of supernatural beings[[note]]Actually he is, his lack of immunity to the "werewolf's cure" is a clue that it's not magical in nature at all[[/note]] - later revealed to be a chemical weapon - either. True, he's still NighInvulnerable, but to see one of manga's most famous {{Showy Invincible Hero}}es taken down to ''merely'' NighInvulnerable is quite surprising.
** That said, he reaffirms his credentials somewhat by showing he can '''breathe in''' the mustard gas without any harm to himself, and exhale it afterwards as if he were breathing air. Granted his first experience gave him the same symptoms as Ciel, but it never threatened his life and he learned how to counteract it pretty quickly.
* NotSoStoic: On the two occasions when he thinks Ciel is about to die and he ''[[NotSoInvincibleAfterAll really]]'' can't do much to help.
* OffhandBackhand: Gave us a pretty epic one to a zombie while soaking wet on a sinking ship...[[http://www.kuroshitsujimanga.com/img/Kuroshitsuji/56/24.jpg no, seriously.]]
* OlderThanHeLooks: He takes on the form of a man in his late twenties/early thirties, but he's Really700YearsOld obviously because he's a demon.
* OnlyKnownByTheirNickname: "Sebastian" is only the name Ciel gave him, which also used to be his dog's name.
* TheOnlyOneAllowedToDefeatYou: Sebastian contractually owns Ciel's soul and literally kills anyone who tries to kill Ciel before he can, even other demons.
* OnlySaneMan: Among the servants of Phantomhive, Sebastian is more or less the only one that can actually get things done. You know you're doing something wrong when the ''demon'' recognizes your incompetence and does your job better.
* OurDemonsAreDifferent: Apart from masquerading as a butler with heightened talents, he almost never reveals his true form onscreen, and only long high heel shoes and some feathers falling around him implying that he at least has bird-like wings.
* PapaWolf: Sebastian will protect Ciel from anything or anyone who would pose a threat to him, [[spoiler: so he can eat Ciel himself when the time comes]].
** Seems to be played more straight with Lizzie.
* PerpetualSmiler: While Sebastian has shown instances of frowning or even scowling, most of the time his default expression is a courteous smile.
* TheProudElite: Suave but aloof, this demon turned butler is quite intelligent and there is very little he cannot do.
* RavenHairIvorySkin
* RedEyesTakeWarning: Almost counts as a RedRightHand, as they're the main hint that he's actually a demon in disguise.
* RedOniBlueOni: The red to Ciel's blue, especially in the anime.
** To drive this point home he has red eyes while Ciel has blue. 'Course after Ciel made his contract one of them turned purple.
* SarcasticDevotee: To Ciel.
* ScrewTheRulesIHaveSupernaturalPowers
* ServileSnarker: Always finds the opportunity to poke fun at Ciel's inability to function without his help.
* SexGod: Because he's a demon who has taken on the form of a handsome butler, Sebastian interrogates a cult member......''very'' convincingly.
-->'''Woman:''' I can see the Gates of Heaven! \\
'''Sebastian:''' (unamused) Oh I ''highly'' doubt that.
** His encounter with Beast averts this with the infamous scene where he continuously pressures Beast into having sex with him even after she yelled "Piss off" and threw him a punch.
* SexyDiscretionShot: His sex scenes with Beast in the manga and Matilda in the anime.
* ScrewySquirrel: He might be an evil demon but that doesn't mean he's without a sense of humor. He seems to enjoy messing with and playing pranks on Ciel every now and then. Given what a SpoiledBrat his master is, this might be one of the ways Sebastian copes with it.
* SlasherSmile: Occasionally.
* SnarkToSnarkCombat: With Claude in the second season of the anime. Their interactions usually include backhanded "compliments" and snarking about the other's butler aesthetics.
* TheSocialDarwinist
* StealthMentor: To Ciel in the manga only. At least, compared to the anime.
** Sebastian will occasionally make a challenge deliberately more difficult than it needs to be, or else goad the boy in order to get Ciel to do the work himself. He'll also comment on Ciel's actions, praising what he did well and pointing out mistakes; over time we can see the kid take these lessons to heart.
*** Chapter 118 has a quick example: Sebastian tells Ciel that "a heart cannot be chained" and allows their hostage to escape, which inspires Ciel to think up a strategy that lands a much stronger blow to their enemies than his original plan.
* SupremeChef: He's not only one of the best fighters in the series, but also one of the best chefs. He prepares all the scrumptious meals in the Phantomhive household.
* SurroundedByIdiots: He's the only servant of the Phantomhive household who is any competent at his job. Every time he assigns a task to the others, they only make a mess and Sebastian has to clean it up.
* TallDarkAndHandsome: He fits this trope to a T.
* TallDarkAndSnarky
* ThoseTwoBadGuys: When partnered with Ciel.
* TooSpicyForYogSothoth: Several times Sebastian ends up in scenarios that make ''him'' squirm in discomfort, displeasure or just {{squick}}, despite the fact he's a demon portraying an almost stereotypically unflappable butler. Two early anime examples include the fact he seems quite alarmed when Madame Red gropes him and his repeated disgust when Grell flirts with him.
* UndyingLoyalty: To Ciel,[[spoiler: at least until his contract is fulfilled of course. [[YourSoulIsMine Then...]]]].
* UnwittingPawn: In the final episode of Season 2, he kills Claude and escapes being bound to Alois for all of eternity only to be bound to a demonic Ciel for all of eternity.
* VampiresAreSexGods: Granted, he's a demon not a vampire but otherwise fits this troupe perfectly.
* VillainProtagonist: In the manga.
* VitriolicBestBuds: One way to interpret his relationship with Ciel.
* WouldHitAGirl: He is not above hitting and killing female characters in the series.
* WouldHurtAChild
* WeaponOfChoice: Silverware, because he's a butler.
* WickedCultured

[[folder: Mey-Rin]]
-> Voiced by Creator/EmiriKatou (JP) and Creator/MonicaRial (ENG)

-->"''A tiny mouse can run anywhere, but they are always in my sight.''"

The maid of the Phantomhive household. She wears OpaqueNerdGlasses given to her by Ciel that limit her eyesight and prevent her from viewing objects correctly at close-range, which causes her to be clumsy when doing her chores. Mey-Rin is actually a professional sniper and due to her sharp binocular vision, she does not require a scope to aid her.
* ActionGirl: She's a ColdSniper who can leap from roof to roof and go GunsAkimbo with two rifles.
* BadassAdorable: You'd never guess this cute and huggable maid girl was, [[spoiler: and still is]], a deadly assassin.
* BerserkButton: Mess with her master or anyone else she cares about and you ''will'' end up with 1 or 2 holes in you, at least. See below.
* BewareTheSillyOnes: She may be a clumsy girl with a blatantly obvious crush on Sebastian, but despite her incompetence, she's an expert assassin who is very adept in using guns.
* BlindWithoutEm: She is farsighted, and she treasures her glasses as the first item she got from Ciel as his maid. However, when [[TheGlassesComeOff she removes them...]]
* ColdSniper: As her backstory.
* CovertPervert: Gets really heated up over potential steamy situations with Sebastian, whether he's with her or Ciel. In the anime, also sprouts a NoseBleed at the sight of Pluto with Angela when she believes they are lovers, and is ''very'' appreciative of the view when they encounter Pluto wandering naked around the fens. Also from her time in Houndsworth, upon seeing a man training a dog, the dub renders her as saying,"I'd let him pet me, yes I would!"
* CrouchingMoronHiddenBadass
* CurtainsMatchTheWindow
* CuteClumsyGirl: Because her glasses affect her close-range eyesight, she frequently trips, knocks things over, and break them. Ciel, please get Mey-Rin some new glasses.
* DeathGlare: Her default expression when she takes her glasses of, and for good reason.
* FullyClothedNudity: Reacts this way in season 1 when she and the other servants go for a swim, and is embarrassed by her Victorian-style swimsuit, which by modern standards is extremely modest.
* GirlishPigtails
* TheGlassesComeOff: And don't make the mistake of trying to [[ImprobableAimingSkills distance yourself from her]] when they do.
* LetsGetDangerous: All of the servants are this to an extent, but unlike Bard (who's laid back but still professional when fighting) and Finny (who reacts with a certain naivety to violence), Mey-Rin is dead serious when she's needed in a fight. She provides the most jarring contrast between her personality on and off duty.
* {{Meganekko}}
* {{Meido}}
* MementoMacGuffin: Ciel was the one who gave her her glasses, so she cherishes them and refuses to give them up despite how they affect her eyesight.
* MysteriousPast: All we've seen of it is her being pinned down by Sebastian when Ciel took her into his service. It's hinted she was a contract killer who got caught and given a second chance.
* NinjaMaid: Deeply enjoys being a maid, as she's made clear several times, but has no compunctions about killing anyone who threatens her employers.
* {{Nosebleed}}
* OnlyOneName
* OpaqueNerdGlasses
* RedEyesTakeWarning
* SpellMyNameWithAnS: Also spelled Mei Lin/Mei Rin/Maylene/etc. Yen Press' official transliteration is Mey-Rin.
* ThreeAmigos: With Finny and Bard.
* WouldHurtAChild: When Wendy and Peter try to bisect Finny, she shoots Wendy in the Head. When confronted by Peter, she shoots him in the shoulder and pins him down with gunfire, before sniping him when he tries to escape.
* YaoiFangirl: She has a crush on Sebastian, but doesn't mind him being all over Ciel and gets huge nosebleeds at the sight.
* ZettaiRyouiki: In Sniper Mode.

[[folder: Baldroy "Bard"]]
-> Voiced by Creator/HirokiTochi (JP) and Creator/IanSinclair (ENG)

-->"''Cooking is an art! And art means explosions!''"

The chef of the Phantomhive household. However, he never makes anything edible as he uses weaponry such as flamethrowers to cook, believing that cooking is an art requiring explosions. He's a former soldier and while terrible at cooking, he is shown to be capable of taking advantage of his surroundings, such as using fine flour to create an explosion.
* AdaptationalNationality: Baldroy is an American in the manga, but is shown to speak with a lower class British accent in the anime and his flashback shows him serving in the British Army, though for some reason he still doesn't know the words to God Save the Queen.
* ATeamFiring: Lampshaded when blasting up the kitchen with the Gatling Gun, Dagger and Beast manage to dodge him, and he expends all his bullets. He laments that while it has a very good number of rounds, the device is made for rapid fire and not accuracy, though in the chaos he did manage to kill Dagger.
* BewareTheSillyOnes
* BoisterousBruiser
* ChefOfIron: His food isn't good mostly because he's blowing people up with it.
* CordonBleughChef: His food might taste good if he tried cooking it the right way instead of using flamethrowers. This is actually a carryover from his days as a soldier. Back then you had to prepare your food quickly or you were likely going to miss your chance to eat before the fighting picked up again. He's just never lost the mentality.
* CrouchingMoronHiddenBadass: While he typically comes across as hopelessly incompetent when it comes to cooking, cleaning and just about every other domestic task, Baldroy is an experienced combatant who can hold his own in a fight.
* DarkAndTroubledPast: Lost everyone he cared about on the battlefield. When Sebastian found him, he was cradling one of his dead friends.
* GatlingGood: Keeps it in the kitchen, of course.
* TheEngineer: A combat type.
* OnlyOneName
* OnlySaneMan: While all the servants are aware Sebastian is no normal butler, Baldroy seems to be the only one to ever suspect there's something sinister going on with him.
* SpellMyNameWithAnS: Baldroy/Baldo/Bard.
* StuffBlowingUp: As a former soldier, he has knowledge of weaponry including explosives.
* TechnicalPacifist: As much as he enjoys explosions, he seems to like not having to kill people... unless necessary.
* ThreeAmigos: With Finnian and Mey-Rin.
* WarIsHell: He had more than enough experience with the horrors of war. His past does seem to haunt him, and he still thinks like a soldier.

[[folder: Finnian "Finny"]]
-> Voiced by Creator/YuukiKaji (JP) and Creator/JasonLiebrecht (ENG)

-->"''It requires strength? Since that's the case, I might be able to do it! I wanna do it! Please allow me to do it!''"

The gardener of the Phantomhive household. However, it seems every time he tends to the garden, it is destroyed through an accident caused by his clumsiness. Finnian was a test subject in some human experiments that gave him SuperStrength and was taken in by Ciel after he ran away from his cell.
* BadassAdorable: Finny's got the excitement of a little kid, and the strength of several men. He's able to wrestle and even flip Pluto, a feat only Sebastian can lay claim to.
* BewareTheSillyOnes
* {{Bishonen}}
* BreakTheCutie: In the flashbacks where he's being tortured.
* TheCaretaker: Forced to become this in chapter 91 for Ciel, as he's the only one of the servants Ciel will let help.
* CrouchingMoronHiddenBadass: May not know much about gardening yet, but he uses his strength more proficiently than what he normally implies; which is usually none at all.
* CuteBruiser
* DarkAndTroubledPast: It's a major theme in the Black Butler universe. Finny is no exception. The poor boy was captured and cruelly experimented on. When he wasn't left alone in a dark cell, he was given numerous unsafe injections and saw his fellow subjects killed with a bullet to the brain.
* DeclarationOfProtection: To Ciel.
* DoesNotKnowHisOwnStrength: He totally [[CuteBruiser does]]. Except when blowing on hot milk to cool it down, he accidentally breathes at ''[[UpToEleven fifty mph]]''.
* DudeLooksLikeALady: Very prominent in the manga, it's easy to think he's a girl unless he's being addressed.
* TheGardener: He's supposed to be the one in charge of the garden, but he always ends up destroying the plants and Sebastian has to clean up his mess.
* HairDecorations
* HairOfGoldHeartOfGold: He has blond hair and he's very innocent and optimistic... of course when in battle it's a different story.
* InASingleBound: Can jump and land great distances across gaps and depths and [[NotTheFallThatKillsYou while it still hurts,]] it doesn't cost him any great damage.
* InnocentBlueEyes
* IOweYouMyLife: To Ciel, for saving him from his life as an experiment and giving him a new life and a name.
* {{Keet}}
* LightningBruiser: Not just strong but quick too. Seen especially when carrying Sullivan out of the forest in chapter 100.
* MySignificanceSenseIsTingling: He's able to tell that the servants can trust "Jeremy," and he can tell that something is off with [[spoiler: the true Ciel]].
* MysteriousPast: Okay, so if Finny grew up as a test subject in a cell, how on earth does he know a specific dialect of German used mainly in Southern Germany?
* OnlyOneName: Justified. His past was so horrible [[TheNameless nobody ever bothered to give him a name]], until he met Ciel. Being given a name was so important to him, it led to his [[IWillProtectHer Declaration of Protection]] for Ciel.
* ReligiousAndMythologicalThemeNaming: Ciel named him after Fionn mac Cumhaill, a mythical hunter-warrior of Myth/CelticMythology.
* SpellMyNameWithAnS: Some call him "Phinnian" as well...
* SuperStrength
* ThreeAmigos: With Bard and Maylene.
* TheyWouldCutYouUp: His SuperStrength comes from surviving human experiments.
* YouAreNumberSix: Was referred to as #12, as shown by his tattoo, during the experiments.

-> Voiced by Creator/ShunjiFujimura (JP) and Creator/RBruceElliott (ENG)

-->"''Ho ho ho.''"

The steward of the Phantomhive household and the only one of the servants who has worked for the household since before the death of Ciel's parents. He's usually seen drinking from a Japanese tea cup and commonly seen in a SuperDeformed form. Despite his appearance, Tanaka is a master of bartitsu and just as dangerous as the other servants when he needs to be.
* ArtShift: Usually drawn SuperDeformed. When he needs to be serious, he's drawn the same as the rest of the cast.
* BadassGrandpa: This old man may not look like it, but he's a master of bartitsu and a swordmaster capable of ''cutting bullets in half in midair''.
* BattleButler
* BewareTheSillyOnes
* CoolOldGuy: The only reason Sebastian tolerates him. That and he doesn't get in the way.
* DissonantSerenity
* MiniatureSeniorCitizens: In his normal appearance he's a lot shorter than the other servants, when serious he's almost as tall as Sebastian.
* NonStandardCharacterDesign: PlayingWithATrope. He's usually designed deformed and simple compared to the cast, but when he's serious, he's drawn the same way as the rest of the cast and goes back to his deformed mode, once he's said what's needed to be said.
* OldMaster: Of bartitsu.
* OldRetainer: Of the Phantomhives. The main reason Ciel lets him stick around.
* OnlyOneName
* ParryingBullets: He's fast enough to ''cut bullets in half in midair'' with his sword.
* SecretKeeper:
** In the anime was told directly by Vincent Phantomhive that Queen Victoria would be the one responsible for his death, but was also asked to keep this from Ciel. At the end of the first season Sebastian gives Ciel's Tanaka's diary, which reveals this.
** In the "Blue Cult" arc, Tanaka knows that [[spoiler:Ciel has a twin brother; he's kept the Phantomhive family secret for fifteen years.]]
* UndyingLoyalty: Has served the Phantomhive family for decades; it's part of why he's kept around despite not doing much. When Ciel turned out to be NotQuiteDead, the thought of returning to his service was enough to get Tanaka out of a ''wheelchair''.

!!Ciel's Associates

[[folder: Elizabeth "Lizzy" Midford]]

-->"''He finally returned to the mansion, but he wasn’t able to laugh anymore. I love Ciel. I love Ciel’s smile. Why is it as though we always seem to end up going in circles? How can I bring back his smile?''"

Ciel's cousin and [[KissingCousins fiancée]]. She's extremely girly, energetic, and deeply devoted to Ciel, who she loves with all her heart and wishes to see him smile again.
* ActionGirl: She is actually an accomplished swordswoman and once she is forced to stop hiding it, she shows her skills by DualWielding against zombies.
* AscendedExtra: Before the Campania arc, she had only appeared in about 5 chapters.
* BadassAdorable: Who would have thought that this girly, cute and affectionate young girl who always wears frilly dresses was a strong swordswoman capable of defending herself against zombies.
* BadassBoast: Gives one during her [=CMoA=] in the Campania Zombies Arc.
* BadassFamily: Her family is made of master swordsmen. Including her, too.
* BewareTheNiceOnes: Take our word for it.
* CatSmile
* DamselInDistress: In the anime. In the manga, this is Deconstructed and Invoked- see DeliberatelyDistressedDamsel below. [[spoiler: Although in the manga she does get brainwashed by a cult who exploit her fencing skills and use her as a guard dog.]]
* DeclarationOfProtection: To Ciel.
* DeliberatelyDistressedDamsel: In the manga, she's actually a LittleMissBadass. She thought Ciel wouldn't like her enough if she was too "brash and uncute", so she didn't use her swordmanship skills until there was no choice. It could be a [[DeconstructedTrope deconstruction]] of the trope. Unlike most girls that fit this trope, it's all for the sake of her beloved, and not because she simply likes being rescued. It also shows that Lizzie had to sacrifice a few things in order to maintain Ciel's pride, and it harmed her self-esteem.
* DualWielding: Wields two swords when forced to fight off zombies.
* ElegantGothicLolita: Unsurprising, given the time period.
* EveryProperLadyShouldCurtsy: She gracefully does so when greeting Sebastian.
* GenkiGirl
* GirlishPigtails
* GirlyBruiser: She really is girly and sweet, and always was. She just hide her swordswoman skills fearing that Ciel would see her uncute.
* TheGlomp: She never hesitates at a chance to glomp Ciel.
* GreenEyes
* HairOfGoldHeartOfGold: Her gold hair highlights her sunny disposition, girlish attitude, innocence, and deep love for Ciel. However, later characterization reveals that she is a LadyOfWar and nowhere near as naive as she seems, but still a NiceGirl.
* HiddenDepths
* IAmXSonOfY: "I am the daughter of the leader of the British Knights Marquis Alexis Leon Middleford: Elizabeth! '''''The Wife of the Queen's Watchdog!'''''"
* InTheBlood: Would you believe her ''father'' is as overaffectionate?
* KickingAssInAllHerFinery: :Fighting zombies in ElegantGothicLolita clothing.
* KissingCousins: She and Ciel are cousins and they are engaged to be married. Not that this was unusual for this time period.
* LadyOfWar: Despite her fear to be seen as unladylike, she manages to look graceful and elegant while slashing zombies.
* LittleMissBadass: This little girl is so badass that when Grell was about to make an entrance, sweet Lizzie pointed a sword at her and glared at the Shinigami.
* LockedOutOfTheLoop: With most things regarding Ciel. Like what happened during the month he was kidnapped or even the fact that he has asthma. Ciel probably keeps these things from her in order to not worry her but now she's starting to get suspicious.
* LoveMartyr: For Ciel. Most of the stunts she pulls are only for Ciel's happiness.
* MasterSwordswoman: Elizabeth is quite the accomplished swordswoman.
* MegaTwintails: That hairstyle can't possibly be achieved in real life without lots of curlers and hair gel. As Lizzie's hair seems to be [[http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kuroshitsuji_2425435.jpg naturally straight]], looks like it's not possible without curlers for her, as well.
* MoralityChain: Her entire reason for existence seems to be keeping Ciel from falling into the abyss.It's lampshaded in chapter 58 she even states that her goal was to be a wife Ciel could protect. Then she changes this so she could protect Ciel.
* NoGuyWantsAnAmazon: The reason she wasn't fighting was because when they were little, young Ciel was afraid of Lizzy's mother and her harsh personality, and was glad he was marrying Lizzy. This made Lizzy feel that if she were to show her sword-fighting side, Ciel wouldn't like her.
* NonIdleRich: Comes from a noble family just like Ciel, yet her mother wouldn't let her just be an elegant lady and taught her to use the sword.
* ObfuscatingStupidity: She's not so harmless as she appears. In this case, it's to fool Ciel into thinking she's someone he needs to protect, instead of the other way around.
* {{Ojou}}
* OverlyLongName: Elizabeth Ethel Cordelia Middleford is her full name in the anime. It's not unusual for that time period either.
* PerfectlyArrangedMarriage: Well, not perfectly, but Ciel ''does'' seem to have warmed up to their arranged marriage some more and Lizzie herself also seems quite happy about it.
* PluckyGirl
* {{Protectorate}}: Seems to be this to her older brother Edward and Ciel.
* SatelliteLoveInterest: Her role in this story is as "The wife of the Queen's Watchdog". [[spoiler:She's quite the accomplished ActionGirl; she just doesn't want to show that side often in front of Ciel, [[NoGuyWantsAnAmazon fearing he may dislike her should she do so]].]]
* SavvyGuyEnergeticGirl: Energetic Girl to Ciel's Savvy Guy.
* SilkHidingSteel: More like ''[[TheCutie Sugar]]'' Hiding [[BadassAdorable Steel]]. She does her best to be a cute and feminine young lady, but when she's forced to fight she shows her skills as a talented swordswoman.
* SkewedPriorities: Lizzy, honey, the cake is not that important, especially when your fiancé has a gun out and there are zombies running about. ''Really.''
** Neither is the [[{{Kawaiiko}} cute dress or the cute demeanour]] as a whole. Ciel briefly chastises her for this, which shortly leads into CharacterDevelopment and TookALevelInBadass for [[DeliberatelyDistressedDamsel Elizabeth]].
* SpoiledSweet: She's used to getting what she wants but, for the most part, isn't a bad person for it.
* StepfordSmiler: As seen from chapter 66, she keeps most of her fears and worries regarding Ciel to herself.
* UnfazedEveryman: One of the few genuinely normal people that [[WeirdnessMagnet Ciel]] knows.
* UnwillinglyGirlyTomboy: A rare inversion. Lizzy is an Unwillingly Tomboyish Girly Girl. Her mother forced her to learn swordsmanship and Lizzy hates it because she thinks it's unladylike and [[NoGuyWantsAnAmazon Ciel won't like her if he finds out she's stronger than him]].
* ViolentlyProtectiveGirlfriend: In the manga, she drops the DamselInDistress act and begins slashing zombies in order to protect Ciel.
* WomanScorned: PlayedForLaughs when [[NotWhatItLooksLike she finds Ciel in a compromising position with Sieglinde]] and [[MistakenForCheating Lizzy thinks Ciel is cheating on her]]. Ciel admits that facing a tank was less terrifying than Lizzy's wrath.

Ciel's aunt, a beautiful doctor and the younger sister of his MissingMom Rachel Durless.
* AllWomenAreLustful: At any rate, she certainly enjoys male attention.
* AntiVillain: She does some monstrous things, but it's pretty hard not to have sympathy for her.
* BewareTheNiceOnes: The red-dressed, haired and eyed aunt of Ciel who sees him as her surrogate son? She's half of Jack the Ripper, punishing prostitutes for requesting abortions while she can't have kids because of an accident that also killed her husband; the other half being her seemingly-stupid but highly sociopathic shinigami butler Grell Sutcliff.
* BloodLust: Just as her fixation with the color red, she developed a fascination with blood after she started murdering prostitutes.
* BreakTheCutie: She was quite cute growing up... but then things got bad... really bad. See TraumaCongaLine below.
* BrokenBird: She was a really sweet girl who only wished for the man she loved to be happy with her big sister, but then she lost her husband, her unborn child, shortly followed by the man she loved and her sister and then she was forced to give abortions to prostitutes. All this broke her and she became a dangerous murderer.
* CannotTellAJoke: When trying to pay the Undertaker's "fee" she resorts to a story she heard from gossip. What follows is a ClusterBleepBomb that ends with her and Lau gagged.
* ChristmasCake

* TraumaCongaLine: Wow. The love of her life marries her older sister, though Red still manages to marry [[SecondLove a good and loving]] NiceGuy anyway. Then, after getting her medical license, her husband and unborn child are killed and she has to have a hysterectomy. She then loses ''both'' her sister and the love of her life in a fire. After all of this, she gives abortions to prostitutes. [[WoobieDestroyerOfWorlds Jealous of the pregnancies they can't keep or don't want,]] she begins killing them, [[InLoveWithYourCarnage which is where Grell steps in.]] However, when faced with more or less getting away with her murders so long as Grell keeps Sebastian busy and she murders Ciel, poor Red can't bring herself to kill her nephew "who was like a son to her"... and is promptly chainsawed by Grell.

* CannotTellAJoke: Like Madame Red he tries to pay the Undertaker's fee. His joke is rather bland but failed through a rushed delivery.
* CovertPervert: Subverted, he really doesn't try to hide it at all. Case in point; Taste in ice scultures and the name of his team that sculpted it. Yeah...

-->"''Because you hold great power, you gradually fail to understand the importance of things that cannot be recovered. You will realize once it's too late.''"

The funeral director in London who has acted as an informant to the Phantomhive family for many years.
* AdaptationalHeroism: When the anime diverges from the manga the Undertaker's character does as well. He's a Grim Reaper in both but in the anime he's simply retired whereas the manga he's a renegade. The anime plays him up as a BunnyEarsLawyer who comes to help in stopping Ash whereas the manga plays him as a NotSoHarmlessVillain who edges closer and closer to being a central antagonist. With the anime now following the manga more as of season 3 and adapting the Luxury Liner arc, we see Undertaker become an antagonist as well.
* AmbiguouslyEvil: Not outright evil, but certainly not on the [[AntiHero good guys' side]], either.
* BadassLongRobe: Full of grave markers that may as well be spears.
* BadassPreacher: Well, if said priest was also a J-Rocker. He's wearing the collar in any case.
* BeautifulAllAlong: In chapter 59 of the manga he finally sweps his hair back and reveals himself as one hell of a {{Bishonen}}. Cue the fangirls squee, of course.
* BewareTheSillyOnes: He's a ridiculous {{Cloudcuckoolander}} who demands payment in jokes. He's also [[spoiler:a highly trained shinigami]], and as such can be extremely dangerous when he wants to be.
* BigBad: Seems to be shaping up to be this as he was the villain of two arcs.
* {{Bishonen}}: [[CastFullOfPrettyBoys Were you really surprised]]? Yana said he is the most handsome man in Kuroshitsuji. Hear that, Sebastian?
* BlindingBangs: His eyes are always by his hair. He does it to hide his GreenEyes, a trait that reveals he's a shinigami.
* CheshireCatGrin
* CreepyGood: In the beginning of the series at least, and in the first two seasons of the anime. As of Chapter 60, not so much considering [[ZombieApocalypse what's he up to]] in that arc though he still appears to [[PetTheDog care about Ciel.]]
* DrivenToSuicide: In chapter 105 it's revealed that all reapers were humans who committed suicide.
* EveryoneCallsHimBarkeep: Even the fellow reapers.
* {{Expy}}: Of Dr. Franken Stein from ''Manga/SoulEater'', appearance-wise and a bit in personality.
* EyeObscuringHat: He sometimes wears his hat in this manner.
* FemmeFatalons: He is a male example.
* FlashStep: Displays this when posing as Weston's Principa]. Sebastian himself failed to catch him.
* ForTheEvulz: Morbid laughs are the only reason he does anything; in most settings, this would be classified as ItAmusedMe, but given the BlackAndBlackMorality of the setting and the fact The Undertaker is responsible for the zombie outbreak going on just because he thought it'd be funny to see what happened if he helped an idiot scientist reanimate corpses, the Undertaker's amusement can be seen in a rather negative light.
* GoodScarsEvilScars: It's as if his skull's had to have been stitched back together... and maybe it ''has.''
* GreenEyes: Grell noticing his eyes causes her to realize immediately he's a rogue Grim Reaper; apparently they all have the same kind of eyes, but he's not wearing any glasses.
* KnowledgeBroker
* LongHairedPrettyBoy: Maybe not necessarily when he's dressed the way he usually does, but definitely when he's in shinigami form. So much so that when Grell saw what his face really looked like, she was completely enamored by his looks.
* MysticalWhiteHair
* NiceHat
* NightmareFetishist: Quite a few different examples, including cooing over how nice a corpse looks with its cuts and [[TooKinkytoTorture allowing Grell to bury him in epsom salts and smiling about the sensation of moisture leaving his body.]] Justified in that he's a Shinigami in the anime, and later in the manga, as well.
* NighInvulnerable: He got attacked by Grell's chainsaw Death Scythe but it had no effect, because he's a shinigami.
* NoSenseOfPersonalSpace: He tends to get a little too close for Ciel's comfort.
* NotSoDifferent: Ciel's (apparent) disgust at the P4's murders gives Undertaker a fit of the giggles.
* NotSoHarmlessVillain: A ton of recently murdered (read: [[NightOfTheLivingMooks eaten]]) ship passengers should drive the point home.
** And he took on Grell, Ronald, and ''Sebastian'' at the same time and ''won effortlessly''.
* PerkyGoth
* {{Shinigami}}: In the anime, and later, the manga. Interestingly, in the former, he's a retired and highly respected ex-shinigami, while in the latter, he's just been revealed to be a renegade shinigami; apparently the fact he alone of the Shinigami we've seen so far doesn't wear glasses is a ''very bad sign''.
* SinisterMinister
* SinisterScythe: So far, the only Shinigami to use a ''real'' scythe. Decorated with bones, AbsurdlySharpBlade and all.
** [[UpToEleven He uses said Death Scythe to cut the ''Campania'' in two]].
* TakeOurWordForIt: We never find out what Sebastian did to make Undertaker laugh.
* TheReveal: ''Several''.
** A flashback in Chapter 32 shows him seated with the former Earl of Phantomhive's gang. This doesn't get a followup until ''Chapter 85''.
** He was the one who created the Bizarre Dolls for kicks, setting off the whole Campania story arc.
** The Principal who escaped from Sebastian so quickly that only his clothes were left? Yeah, that was him too. He took the job ''after'' he helped the P4 hide a few bodies.
** And probably the most important: He's a Shinigami, and an incredibly powerful one at that - so much so that William has a bit of a freak-out when he realizes who the hell this guy is.
* TooKinkyToTorture: Again, only in the anime.
* TookALevelInJerkass: In the manga and the anime, he reveals himself to be much nastier than the slightly creepy PerkyGoth everyone was used to, to the point in chapter 61 he ''stabs Sebastian in the gut with his scythe.'' His plan, which he explains in chapter 60, isn't a nice thing either.
* {{Undertaker}}
* WalkingSpoiler: Sure, we can talk about ''some'' stuff about this guy, but trying to explain him beyond the "silly Undertaker who enjoys jokes at other people's expense and has a morbid store with a just as morbid sense of humor" would require copious amounts of spoiler tags. Just look at his various tropes here.
* WhatBeautifulEyes: In the anime, Grell brushes out his BlindingBangs and is charmed by his eyes. She immediately asks him to make love to her.
* WhiteHairBlackHeart: As of chapter 60.
* {{Yandere}}: Possibly for Ciel if his willingness to kill Sebastian for Ciel is any indication.
** Possibly a platonic variant if his (undefined) connection to Ciel's grandmother has anything to do with it.

!!Grim Reapers

[[folder: Grell Sutcliff]]
-> Voiced by Creator/JunFukuyama (JP) and Daniel Fredrick (ENG)

-->"''Even if I'm like this, I'm still the butler of death!''"

Grell Sutcliff is a Grim Reaper who initially posed as Madam Red's butler. Despite being part of the Dispatch Management Division, Grell's willing to go against the rules & kill for self entertainment. Grell's very interested in Sebastian & William, to their great dismay.
* AdaptationalWimp: In the Anime, where Grell undergoes VillainDecay.
* AxCrazy
* BadassLongcoat: The long coat in question being the coat Grell took from Madam Red as she died.
* BestHerToBedHer: Possibly. The men that Grell usually falls the hardest for are the men who have beaten Grell in a fight. Arguably, this is why Grell fell for William T. Spears in the first place!
* BirdsOfAFeather: Part of what attracted Grell to Madame Red was that she was taking out her frustrations at being barren - since Grell has a male assigned body, Grell can't give birth either, so they had a common cause.
* BlindWithoutEm: Apparently, being ridiculously near-sighted is a shinigami trait.
* BloodLust: Grell delights in painting the world red with blood. Grell's line of work as a Reaper effectively involves hacking up people with a chainsaw every night, with paperwork in between.
* TheBusCameBack: In the manga, Grell doesn't reappear after the Jack the Ripper arc until about 50 chapters later on the ''Campania''.
* {{Buttmonkey}}: At least in the anime, due to flanderization.
* ChainsawGood: Averted. It jams when it gets clothing caught in it.
* CharacterizationMarchesOn: Though partially justified as part of a disguise, Grell initially came across as [[ShrinkingViolet timid]], [[TheDitz clumsy]] and suicidal. Then after [[TheReveal the reveal]], later parts of the story portray the reaper as [[LargeHam over the top]], [[AgentPeacock flamboyant]] [[AxCrazy and very violent]].
* CheshireCatGrin: This seems to be a popular trope for the characters of this series, but now Grell can especially fit it, seeing as the reaper portrayed the Cheshire Cat in the Alice in Wonderland-inspired OVA.
* CombatSadoMasochist: Especially with Will and Sebastian on the masochist part.
* CombatStilettos
* DarkActionGirl: Grell's very dangerous with a chainsaw.
* DepravedBisexual: She fell in love with Sebastian ''and'' Madame Red.
* DiminishingVillainThreat: This is especially true in the anime, reducing Grell from a legitimate threat to a HarmlessVillain by each appearance.
* DrivenToSuicide: In chapter 105 it's revealed that all reapers were humans who committed suicide.
* EvilRedhead: Fitting with Grell's love of red and blood, she also has red hair.
* FangsAreEvil: After the reveal, Grell constantly has sharp shark like teeth.
* FriendlyEnemy: When it comes to Sebastian, at least. Although apparently Grell thinks it's more complicated than that.
* GreenEyes: Seems to be a shinigami trait.
* HasAType: She seems to love dangerous, deadly people, as seen with her attractions to Sebastian, Madame Red and the Undertaker.
* InLoveWithYourCarnage: This was likely the reason Grell fell in love with Madame Red and Sebastian in the first place.
* InterplayOfSexAndViolence: With Sebastian & William in the Shinigami OVA.
* UsefulNotes/JackTheRipper: Grell is at least one half of "Jack The Ripper", being Madam Red's accomplice in murdering the prostitutes.
* KarmaHoudini: In a series full of villains facing [[LaserGuidedKarma very karmic deaths]] Grell has notably received relatively '''minor''' punishments for killing Madam Red, Ciel's aunt, and tempting her into killing women in the first place, like being beaten in the face and dragged off by Will for abusing the duties of a reaper. However, Grell has not suffered any lasting punishment. Having her weapon downgraded till the finale of Season 1 is the only punishment received.
* MadLove: Towards Sebastian and Will. It seems Grell likes them both for the cold shoulders & burning bruises they give.
* MeaningfulName: Shares a surname with [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peter_Sutcliffe Peter Sutcliffe]] the original JackTheRipoff.
* MoreTeethThanTheOsmondFamily
* NoSell: In Season 2 Sebastian convinces Grell to rush Mrs. Turner, who was using a camera that ignited a special magnesium powder that was powerful enough to burn through flesh, bone, and even a soul. Grell being a Grim Reaper, happily used a Chainsaw to scale a tower, unaffected by each blast, and eventually started posing for "pictures" as Mrs. Turner tried fruitlessly to roast Grell.
* NotInTheFace: Grell's very intent on preserving "feminine beauty" for darling "Sebas-chan" & William. Also, in the anime, Grell has a crush on Undertaker, but in the manga, Grell absolutely despises Undertaker for the scythe cut to the cheek.
* {{Shinigami}}: Has a chainsaw instead of a scythe, and the attacks reveal the memories of the victims.
* SignificantGreenEyedRedhead: Has red hair and the characteristic green eyes that Grim Reapers share.
* SissyVillain: Only in the anime; in the manga, Grell's rather vicious, especially if you harm the face.
* SlasherSmile: Post-reveal, all the time.
* TooKinkyToTorture: Especially in the anime.
* {{Transsexual}}: Grell was assigned male at birth, but identifies as a female.
* WeaponOfChoice: The chainsaw that is used as a Death Scythe... even though it got taken away in the anime and replaced with [[ShearMenace scissors]]. As a result, Grell was mostly reduced to [[PluckyComicRelief comic relief]]. Though Grell got it back at the end of season 1.
* WouldHurtAChild: Aside from trying to off Ciel, Grell once comically punched a child in the head for being called "impure."

[[folder: William T. Spears]]
-> Voiced by Creator/NoriakiSugiyama (JP) and Barry Yandell (ENG)

-->"''If you interfere, I'll reap you.''"

A Grim Reaper in charge of supervising the Dispatch Management Division.
* AdjustingYourGlasses: All the time, usually with the pointy end of his death scythe.
* AllPowerfulBystander: In the anime. He stays on the sidelines of the plot because he can't be bothered but when Angela/Ash comes into conflict with the Grim Reapers he brings the hammer down on them hard; matching them in combat the first time and bringing a team with him to sabotage their plans the second time. Though he remains as powerful in the Manga it's clear that he sees [[spoiler:the Undertaker]] as a bigger threat.
* BadassInANiceSuit: Also fits the other Death Gods (with the exception of Grell).
* {{Bishonen}}: While he's more handsome than pretty now, he certainly fit this trope when he was younger.
* BlindWithoutEm: There are some [[WeaksauceWeakness amusing side effects]] when he loses his glasses.
* TheComicallySerious
* DrivenToSuicide: In chapter 105 it's revealed that all reapers were humans who committed suicide.
* GreenEyes: All Grim Reapers seem to share this trait.
* ImprobableWeapon: A pruning pole.
* {{Jerkass}}: The manner in which he treats his fellow reapers leaves something to be desired.
** He also doesn't take too kindly to Ciel or Sebastian.
* MeanBoss: There is nothing redeemable about a boss who stomps on the faces of his lowerclassmen.
* MysteriousMiddleInitial
* OnlySaneMan: Among the Shinigami, though he is quite quirky...
* PerpetualFrowner: The only time we ever see him laugh (or even smile, at that) is in the Ciel in Wonderland OVA. Theoretically, you'd think it to be a charming moment, but...
* RomanticizedAbuse: For the most part, this is only in the anime. The more William beats Grell up the more the [[{{Fangirl}} fangirls]] {{squee}}.
** In the anime, Grell apparently fell in love with him because of it.
* ScaryShinyGlasses: Played for intimidation, mostly when Grell is involved.

* MulticoloredHair
* RecklessSidekick: He jumps headfirst into a fight between Sebastian and William... [[LeeroyJenkins and ends up almost hitting both of them.]]

* FacialMarkings: Like all of the circus members.
* GenkiGirl: Has a very cheerful persona as Freckles. Not so much as Doll.
* InnocentCohabitation: Ends up as Ciel's roommate during his stay at the circus. Ciel had no idea that Freckles was a girl.
* InnocentBlueEyes: Has these, being TheCutie, of course.
* KillTheCutie: After she found out that Ciel and Sebastian had killed the rest of the circus crew, she tried to attack them. [[TearJerker The attempt failed]].
* LoveMakesYouEvil: Her love for her "father" and siblings causes her to follow his orders and kidnap children, most of the other circus crew members do this as well. Downplayed, however, as neither she or any of them knew what was ''really'' happening to the children. Even Joker didn't know that kidnappings were in order for their bones to be used for prosthetic limbs by the Doctor and he was ''[[MyGodWhatHaveIDone horrified]]'' when he found out. So its likely none of them would have done it had they they known.
* MoralityPet: She's one of the few people whom Ciel has felt remorse over killing.
* OnlyOneName
* ParasolOfPrettiness: As Doll.
* ParentalAbandonment
* PeekABangs: Covers the left side of her face with her hair. It's to cover the part of her face which is deformed, mainly her eye.
* SheCleansUpNicely: Doll is incredibly elegant.
* SugarAndIcePersonality: There are two distinct sides to her personality: the side of the serious, solemn and quiet performer Doll, and the side that's cheerful, friendly and playful when she's Freckles.
* TheTease: She forces Ciel to touch her chest to prove that she is a girl, and offers him the chance to "take a peek downstairs," as she words it.
* ThisIsUnforgivable: Her reaction when she found out that it was Ciel and Sebastian who had killed the rest of the circus crew.
* TomboyWithAGirlyStreak: As masculine as she is, she can act and dress like a lady as Doll.
* TwoFaced: The part of her face that she covers with her face is deformed.
* UnsettlingGenderReveal: Places Ciel's hands on her breasts to prove that "he" is actually a "she".
* WomanInWhite: As Doll.

-->"''We decided to protect our most precious thing. For that, we will do anything.''"

The surrogate leader of the Noah's Ark Circus, tasked with managing the shows and performing as the pierrot.
* AboveGoodAndEvil: He didn't care what he had to do, as long as he thought it would save the other children.
* AllForNothing: He believed he was protecting his "brothers and sisters" back at the Renbon Workhouse by obeying Kelvin. * NothingUpMySleeve: He has a knife hidden within his [[ArtificialLimbs Artificial Limb]] at all times.
* NotSoDifferent: To Ciel. When he begs Ciel to not kill Kelvin he states that the man is the one who saved them and is helping all their friends at the orphanage. Even if Joker and the others had to do commit horrible actions to further their cause, he still feels it's right if it gives all the abandoned children a better future. * BoundAndGagged: When Sebastian captured him, he was locked inside a box, all tied up.
* TheBusCameBack: After the Circus arc, he was left behind none the wiser. He returned near the end of the Murder Mystery arc to look for his friends by questioning Ciel and Sebastian. He joins Ciel's staff in the meantime.
* ConsultingMisterPuppet: People sometimes wonder whether he's simply a mouth-piece for his snakes or not.
* DarkAndTroubledPast: It hints that all of the circus members have this. However, Snake is set apart because he was not originally found by Baron Kelvin; prior to joining the circus, he was put in a cage as a HalfHumanHybrid attraction until the circus members freed him.
%%* DullEyesOfUnhappiness

* GreenEyes: With a hint of gold.
* HalfHumanHybrid: According to Joker, he's a half-human, half-snake.
* HellishPupils: Has snake-like pupils. Justified since he's half-snake.
* HorribleJudgeOfCharacter: Can be played straight or averted depending on how well you think Ciel lied to him about wanting to cooperate and find the 'missing' circus members.

[[folder: Baron Kelvin]]
->'''Voiced by:''' Creator/{{Chafurin}} (JP), Creator/MikeMcFarland (EN)

-->"''Special people can only be touched by other special people.''"

A philanthropist, and the creator and financial supporter of the Noah's Ark Circus. He is referred to as "Father" by the first-string members, except Snake.
* AbhorrentAdmirer: To Ciel. He sees the boy as the ultimate epitome of beauty and did everything to get his attention, even reenact the day Ciel was sacrificed. Ciel's response is to shoot him point-blank.
* AbusiveDad: He forces his devoted children to kidnap other children and is shown to treat them like crap after becoming obsessed with Ciel and "beauty".
* ArcVillain: Of the "Circus Arc/Book of Circus."
* AxCrazy: Years of pursuing what he calls perfection has twisted him beyond any and all repair.
* AristocratsAreEvil: Gradually became this once he met Ciel.
* AssholeVictim: After everything this creep did, you don't feel sorry for him when he gets killed by the boy he was obsessed with.
* BandagedFace: Was about to undergo plastic surgery, which didn't take when he heard that the Phantomhives had been assassinated.
* EvilCripple
* FatBastard
* IJustWantToBeBeautiful: After his second meeting with the Phantomhive household.
-->'''Kelvin''': Oh... I get it now. Special people can only be touched by other special people. I'm too ugly to even think about touching them.
* IHaveYourWife: Kelvin uses his access to the first-tier members' "brothers and sisters" in the Renbon Workhouse and his ability to aid or hinder them, to control the first-tier members and get them to do want he wants, no matter how much they hate it. Later, Ciel and Sebastian discover that Kelvin had lied about keeping the other children at the Renbon Workhouse alive. They assume Kelvin most likely allowed Doctor to kill them for his experiments with artificial limbs. Meaning that all Joker and the rest did was for ''nothing''.
* LoveAtFirstSight: The moment he laid his eyes on Ciel, the old man became obsessed.
* LoveMakesYouCrazy
* LoveMakesYouEvil: He used to be a kindly philanthropist who took in street urchins, but then he met Ciel, became obsessed with beauty and is now a crazy sadist who kidnaps children to have their bones to be used for prosthetic limbs and forces the rest of them to do sick "performances".
* MalevolentMutilation: Has the children that Joker and the others kidnap on his orders subjected to this, so that Doctor can use their bones to make his new prosthetics limbs.
* MyGreatestFailure: In a very twisted way; he regards his absence from the fateful ceremony during which Ciel was intended to be sacrificed, and which summoned Sebastian three years ago, to be this. (Even though that he had gone through such extensive surgery to the point of being bedridden, due to his obsession with Ciel, was why). Therefore, he decided to end up kidnapping and mutilating countless children, under the masquerade of Joker and the others' circus troupe; and ''over the next three years, meticulously constructed an exact replica of the ritual ceremony'' to undertake with Ciel, for Ciel and Sebastian. Not to mention, he wished to die in the very same way that Sebastian had massacred the occultists during Ciel's attempted sacrifice three years prior.
* PsychopathicManchild
* SanitySlippage: Seemed to be a good guy at first, then his obsession with "beauty" starts to manifest...
* SerialKiller: He was responsible for the kidnapping case that Ciel was investigating. The children he kidnapped were forced to perform to their death, or intended as sacrificial lambs.
* TheSociopath: Becomes this after his "fall". He orders children to perform deadly tricks and laughs when they inevitably die.
* StalkerWithACrush: He's creepily obsessed with Ciel. He even keeps wine bottles from the year he was born.
* WouldHurtAChild: See SerialKiller.
* {{Yandere}}
* YourCheatingHeart: He had a wife, but he completely forgot about her after becoming obsessed with Ciel. He didn't even care when she left him.

[[folder: Doctor]]

->'''Voiced by:''' Creator/SatoshiMikami (JP), Alex Organ (EN)

A doctor who works at the Noah's Ark Circus to tend to the members' injuries and their prosthetic limbs, which he has constructed himself.
* TheDogWasTheMastermind: Averted. He has many of the traits, being the non-suspicious [[TheManBehindTheMan man behind the man]], supplying the evil plan exposition and also being the last man standing after the supposed mastermind, Kelvin. However Kelvin remains the true mastermind, he ordered the kidnappings, had the children murdered, and kicked off the plot with his mad desire for Ciel, while the doctor only decided to LetNoCrisisGoToWaste and create his limbs.
* EveryoneCallsHimBarkeep: He's only referred to as Doctor.
* ExtremeDoormat: He can only ask for the First-stringers to stop destroying his hospital with their fighting, and he tends to be ignored.
* FourEyesZeroSoul: Post-Reveal. His lack of expression combined with his glasses [[ScaryShinyGlasses newfound reflective traits]] serves to give him a detached sociopathic look.
* LackOfEmpathy: He doesn't understand why killing children for his experiments is wrong, comparing their worth to the lives of cows whose bones would normally be used for the prosthetics.
* MadDoctor: He's been making the artificial limbs out of bones, specifically children's.
* ObfuscatingDisability: He's pretending to be unable to walk as it makes him easier to trust.
* VillainousFriendship: Type 4 with Baron Kelvin. He was willing to perform operations to make Kelvin "Beautiful" and supported his evil doings. He valued Kelvin and admired him as Kelvin shared his principles and disregard for life. When Kelvin dies, the Doctor admits its a shame, and promptly gets over it, asking Ciel if he could get a job from him.
* WalkingSpoiler: He doesn't have that many appearances, but in his last he drops quite a few reveals. This is also in a literal sense as he's revealed to be able to walk.
* WouldHurtAChild: And that's just the start.

-->"''From now on, I want to try and learn all sorts of things. And someday, I'll become a great man who won't lose to anyone and show you!''"

An Indian prince, and the twenty-sixth child of the Raja of Bengal. He came to England to track down his nursemaid Mina, but after learning that Mina left India on purpose to become a rich man's wife and that she hated him for his ignorance and self-absorbed personality, Soma decided to stay with Ciel and learn how to act as a gentleman and even proclaims to be Ciel's best friend.
* BecauseYouWereNiceToMe: Turns out, he takes this to extremes.
** The real reason he rescued Agni from execution years ago had something to do with a previous incident where Agni saved Soma.
** He stays in London constantly trying to befriend someone who he knows dislikes him because Ciel helped him become a better person, and he wants to return the favor.
* BigBrotherInstinct: He develops this for Ciel, much to the latter's annoyance.
* {{Bishonen}}
* BreakTheCutie: Though he learns a valuable lesson from it. [[spoiler: He gets broken again in Chapter 127 when Agni dies.]]

But because he wants to pay Ciel back for helping him get his act together, and because he sees Ciel's potential for improvement, he stays in England. He's fully aware that Ciel might stay forever alone and bitter, but he'd rather risk being hurt for a chance to help save Ciel.
** Apparently his backstory with Agni isn't as straightforward as it first appeared to be.
* HorribleJudgeOfCharacter: Sees Ciel as a good guy and a friend, despite Ciel's... aloofness and suspicious behavior.
** Later subverted in the manga- see HiddenDepths.
* ImpaledPalm: [[spoiler:In chapter 127, Soma tried to save himself from being killed by placing his right hand in front of gun instead. Thus, badly injured his hand.]]

* PrettyFreeLoader: Despite being a filthy-rich prince, he decides to live under Ciel's roof.
* SmarterThanYouLook: Massive ditz, but intelligent and well-educated enough from a young age that the finest academy in England has nothing to teach him. He was ''bored''.

* BattleButler: Comes off as a rather benign foreign counterpart to Sebastian.
* {{Bishonen}}
* CatchPhrase: ''"Jo aagyaa"'', a (phonetically-spelled) Hindi phrase roughly meaning "As you command".
* CharlesAtlasSuperPower: At first, Ciel believed him to be another supernatural creature, since he managed to achieve a draw in a duel against Sebastian. But the latter reassures him that Agni is a normal human, despite his skills.
* ChefOfIron: Also, a SupremeChef. The "Hand of God" isn't a reference to his combat prowess but rather to his cooking.

* {{Cloudcuckoolander}}
* CombatCommentator: In Episode 7 of the 2nd season.
* [[PiratesWhoDontDoAnything Doctor Who Doesn't Do Anything]]: Has a medical degree, but never does anything... er, medical.
* DiminishingVillainThreat: More so in the anime than in the manga, though he's not much of a threat in both canons. In the anime, he goes from being a shady prostitution dealer to rather ridiculous, HoYay riddled comic relief.
** His involvement in illegal affairs remains intact, as demonstrated by being a member of 'the Phoenix', a shady medical cult.
* LargeHam
* ManInWhite
* RunningGag: Whenever he sees or tastes something he enjoys, he'll always make at least one reference to the "Lady Robin" who captured his heart that time at his party. And Ciel just happens to be nearby every time he does...
* TheNicknamer: He calls every woman he finds attractive a "Robin". Which becomes a touch creepy when he calls ''Ciel'' one.
* PurpleEyes
* SissyVillain
* WickedCultured

The chief inspector of Scotland Yard. He works under Arthur Randall, and is the only officer in Scotland Yard besides the commissioner that is aware of Ciel's identity as the Queen's Watchdog.

* DeathByAdaptation: In the anime's first season he's impaled by Lau when trying to protect Ciel. In the Manga he's still kicking around, and when the Anime adapts the Circus storyline he's still in his original role.
* FairCop
* FriendToAllChildren: He feels sorry for Ciel because he's a burdened child.
* GoOutWithASmile: In the anime.
* HeroicSacrifice: In the anime.
* HiddenDepths: As the show goes on he's shown to be a pretty empathetic reasonable man. Able to see Ciel's rants about being alone as trying to bury the loss of his parents, as Fred himself knows what it's like to be an orphan. He and another officer also displayed a talent at ice sculpture, able to construct a very accurate, if [[OffWithHisHead weak necked]] sculpture of their boss.
* NamedAfterSomebodyFamous: Or rather, ''is'' someone famous.
* NiceGuy
* {{Retirony}}: Mentions to a friend and Ciel his upcoming marriage and thoughts of parenthood. [[ADeathInTheLimeLight Nice knowing ya Fred.]]

[[folder: Paula]]
-> Voiced by Creator/YuiItsuki (JP) and Creator/JessicaCavanagh (ENG)

The maid and dear friend of Elizabeth.
* CanonImmigrant: Originally an anime-only character, she later makes multiple appearances in Lizzie's flashbacks in the Ship Voyage arc in the manga, then appears in the present (albeit as a cameo) with Elizabeth as a specator of the crickett tournament in the Public School arc, and then once more at the beginning of the Blue Order arc.
* BrokenTears: In chapter 129, despite of being reunited with Edward, [[spoiler:she look very sadden after he mention his sister's whereabout. She sadly stated that Elizabeth "has gone to where she belongs", after that she continues to shed tears uncontrollably.]]
* CatchPhrase: "Jingle jingle!"
* CurtainsMatchTheWindow: Paula has brown eyes and hair.
* DamselInDistress: In the manga, it was revealed during Blue Cult arc that [[spoiler:she was forced against her will to work at Sphere Music Hall until Scotland Yard raid the hall, but they detail Paula and send a notice to Edward afterwards.]]
* {{Meido}}: She works as Elizabeth's personal maid.
* SoUnfunnyItsFunny: Her attempts at cheering Lizzie up in the anime are very awkward, but endearing.

-->"''It's just a pretentious bit of writing done outside of my own specialty.''"

A poor oculist and struggling writer, who is invited to the Phantomhive manor in the Murder Mystery arc. He becomes the recorder of the strange and bizarre events that occur at the Phantomhive Manor. He's all but stated to be Creator/ArthurConanDoyle, though his full name is never revealed.
* {{Adorkable}}
* BeenThereShapedHistory: Ciel and Sebastian explaining to him what really happened with the murders-[[BrokenMasquerade including Sebastian being a demon]]-is what lead him to continue writing.
* BigBrotherInstinct: Towards Ciel.
* BrokenMasquerade: Arthur is the only {{Muggle}} person to know Sebastian is a demon and live to ''not'' tell the tale.
* GenreSavvy: Being a mystery writer in his spare time, he's well-aware of certain relating tropes, and even learns some new ones during the course of the story.
* ItWillNeverCatchOn: Arthur is positive that ''Literature/AStudyInScarlet'' won't be popular and isn't keen on writing the character again. Ciel and Sebastian change his mind.
* JustBetweenYouAndMe: Ciel and Sebastian reveal to Arthur not only the details of their scheme but also that Sebastian is a demon. They allow Arthur to go free... but not before warning him that if he ever tells a soul about their secret then Arthur will be killed. Oh, and they'll always be watching...
* MassiveNumberedSiblings: He has 10 siblings.
* NiceGuy: He's polite, gentle, if a little bit of a pushover. He was quite protective of Ciel, and was one of the only persons in the Murder Mystery arc who maintains his faith for the boy when the latter becomes a prime suspect for a murder.
* OneSteveLimit: Averted. This is the manga's second Arthur, sharing a name with Arthur Randall, the Scotland Yard Commissioner.
* WriteWhatYouKnow: InUniverse, his experiences at the Phantomhive manor inspire many story elements he'd use in the next Sherlock Holmes books.
* YoungFutureFamousPeople: He's a young Arthur Conan Doyle. He's never called by his full name, but it's made ''extremely'' obvious.
