• Girl In A Box Boy In A Crate: Germany met Italy like this.
  • He ends up in one again after America and England get tired keeping him prisoner and send him back to Germany. With a card that says "FUCK" on it.
• Joshikousei Danshigakusei: Italy sometimes wears a sailor suit ... but only some of it.
• Moe: At all ages◊. Just ask the Holy Roman Empire... or Germany... or his legions of Fangirls.

• The Obstructive Love Interest: He is this to Germany. But played for comedy of course.
• The Woobie: Mostly due to his own incompetence (even the title says so!) but that doesn't make him any less sympathetic.
• Took A Level In Badass: As Chibitalia, he once kicks Turkey's ass. He de-levels, of course.
• Trademark Favorite Food: Pastaaaaaaaaa~!
• Trouser Space: In one comic, Italy pulls a pair of boxers out of his own pair.

Germany - Ludwig

• Bi The Way: Him. North Italy. Holy Roman Empire and Chibitalia, if you adcribe to the "Germany = grown-up, amnesiac HRE" theory. That's all.
• Drill Sergeant Nasty: Germany shouts almost constantly at anyone who is being difficult, unorganized or a layabout. It's implied that Austria is even stricter.
  • Training From Hell: As far as Italy is concerned, they put him through this.
• Hawaiian Shirted Tourist: When taking a trip to Hawaii, getting a weird look from a Hawaiian.
• Hiroki Yasumoto
• Laser Guided Amnesia: It has been hinted that he really is the missing Holy Roman Empire, only grown up and without any recollection of his childhood. That comes across in the Valentine's strip, which ends with Germany possibly starting to recover his memories.
• Lawful Neutral: See below...
• My Country Right Or Wrong: Well...yeah, but WWII Germany in particular fits this trope. He's seen reacting with open shock and disgust at some of the orders he's given (like taking Austria away by force in the "Anschluss", despite Hungary and Italy's pleas), yet he can't do anything but obey.
• Neat Freak: One strip has Italy cooking and Germany cleaning up his mess right next to him.
• Paper Thin Disguise: Germany, reenacting a story about a spy, only wears glasses as a disguise. However France only recognizes him after noticing Germany's table manners.
• Perpetual Frowner: He has smiled maybe once, and that was when he was young.
  • Lies! He smiles at Italy just before invading Poland in WWII, and when he's making clocks during - ironically enough - The Great Depression.
• Please Put Some Clothes On: Germany often says this to Italy.
  • In one strip Japan is scandalized to find Italy and Germany lounging without shirts on a hot summer day.
• Say My Name ITALIAAAAAAA!!!!
• Serious Business: "Whether it be games or cleaning, it's Serious Business to me!"
• Trademark Favorite Food: If you ask South Italy or France, he's a "potato freak", but he doesn't eat them often. When France spots him undercover, it's the way he's eating that gives him away.
  • Don't forget wursts!
• Tsundere: Himaruya actually calls Germany one in the notes. It's hard to tell his exact type given his usually staid demeanour. He seems to be a Type A fond of a mix between Cold Shoulder and Smirk (less about merely throwing insults around or having mood swings, more about being grumpy and a Drill Sergeant Nasty to Italy); he's usually a 'take no guff' guy around everybody, but you can just tell he's making exceptions for Italy.
  • And to drive the point further, the Valentine's strip had Germany pretty much the whole time in full-blown deredere mode.
• Victorious Childhood Friend: He may be this to Chibitalia/North Italy, if he is the Holy Roman Empire.
• Wangst: "Einsamkeit und Recht und Freiheit (Loneliness)". From the few lyrics we know, it's played for laughs. It can still be sad depending on your point of view.
• The Woobie: In the crazy world of Hetalia, Germany was given the blessing of sanity. His woobieness is especially prominent in the Valentine's Day strip. If you're more of an Italy fan, you probably won't see things from this view and vice versa.

Japan - Kiku Honda

• Americans Hate Tingle Westerners Hate Japan: There are definitely Western fans who like him, but also an equal number of fans who are 'meh' about him at best and brand him as an Extreme Doormat, Flat Character, and/or even the series' Wesley at worst due to his relatively stoic personality and him representing the author's homeland which automatically makes him the character most vulnerable to Mary Sue accusations.
• Big Fancy House: He lives in a traditional Japanese house complex. It even has a a small outdoor hot spring.
• Birds Of A Feather: The major foundation for the Greece/Japan pairing, aside of the "Private Lesson"
• Boke And Tsukkomi Routine: In the Anglo-Japanese alliance, the artist isn't sure which is which.
• Cain And Abel: Him and his adoptive brother China.
• Cherry Blossoms: In episode 3 of the anime, when Japan is given the spotlight he's surrounded by flying sakura petals.
• Covert Pervert: ...Come on, this is Japan we're talking about, how could he not be one? It's shown a little in the strips as well-like praising 2D over 3D, and casually having confidence-stealing erotic woodblock prints in his art book collection.
• Fish Out Of Water: He feels a bit strange sometimes, when interacting with the other Axis members.
• Gag Penis: Inverted, because he's... well, a lightweight in his pants◊.
  Italy (as he's taking a hot bath with Japan): Hey, Japan! I heard from Germany that your miniatures are amazing! (...) [looks at Japan's body and into the water, obviously sizing up the other] Oh, wow! Here too?
  Japan: My secret has been exposed. I suppose I can't do anything about this now... (there's a Discretion Shot as he beats up Italy)
• Hey Its That Voice: Voiced by Hiroki Takahashi aka Squalo aka Hisoka aka Eiji Kikumaru.
• Hikikomori: A throwaway joke says that Japan spent 200 years as one before Commodore Perry. More exactly, Japan identifies himself as a hikikomori when he sees the American boats and almost has a Freak Out.
• Japanese Politeness: Japan is always polite, even at his rudest:
  China: I'm China, aru! (...) Say, what's your name, aru?
  Child!Japan: (bows) Hello China, whom the sun sets upon. I am Japan...
  China: Wah! This kid is so rude, aru!
  • Truth In Television, as this is practically how Japan addressed itself in their first diplomatic document to China (The Emperor of the Land of the Sunrise to the Emperor of the Land of the Sunset...). The Chinese Emperor was of course pissed off, saying "bring not those impolite states before me!"
• Katanas Are Just Better: His Weapon Of Choice.
• Launcher Of A Thousand Ships: How many nations is he paired up with in fanon? Specially by Japanese fans?
• Monochromatic Eyes
• Obake: They still exist, though Japan can't see them anymore.
• Otaku: Despite not showing stereotypic otaku traits, he said he prefers 2D over 3D. Given the context, that should tell you something.
• Oyaji Kid: Remembering everybody's name is too much, the birthdays just get harder every year, high blood pressure, need to eat less salt...
• Seppuku: He is shocked to discover this isn't Germany and Italy's first response to surrender.
• She Is Not My Girlfriend I Did NOT Have A One Night Stand With Him: Japan would like you to acknowledge that he did NOT sleep with Greece. (It's almost a sure shot that he did.)
• Teen Genius: Japan learns to write and invents his own alphabet very quickly, much to China's shock.
  • Gadgeteer Genius: In the webcast, he gives a U-boat a very interesting upgrade.
• That Makes Me Feel Angry: "An unpleasant sensation."
  • Discretion Shot: But when he really does get angry...
• The Immodest Orgasm: If his screams during Greece's private lesson were of pleasure...
• Vocal Evolution: In the first drama CD, Hiroki Takahashi gives Japan a rather soft voice. Later dramas and the anime series have him using a deeper tone.
• Wholesome Crossdresser: Japan dresses like the archetypical Japanese housekeeper (female kimono, apron, and headgear included) when he does housework.
• Woman In White Nation-tan in White: When wearing his white military uniform.
• Yamato Nadeshiko. Nevermind his gender, Japan by himself is actually the character in the series who's the closest to being a Yamato Nadeshiko, other than Liechtenstein (and maybe Lithuania), especially in the modern day strips. He's polite, soft-spoken, wears traditional Japanese clothing outside of meetings, and while he has his share of bizarre quirks like every other character in Hetalia does, they tend to be more subtle and show up less often for him than for most other characters.
  • ... Which of course has led to some people accusing him of being a Flat Character, even though his Yamato Nadeshiko traits are frequently used for humor/parody (e.g. he's often too polite for his own good or doesn't let his politeness get in the way of him being a touch passive-aggressive).
• Yandere or Yangire: Like Spain, he's got his own Yandere/Yangire ("Black Kiku") tag on Pixiv. And while he's almost always depicted as a polite and emotionally reserved guy in canon, you can't really blame some people for wondering if what motivated him to brutally stab his brother China In The Back at some point is still lurking somewhere underneath that calm exterior...

Justice Destiny Strike Freedom

• Biggus Dickus: Russia and America used condoms for psychological warfare.
• Black Magic: England uses a creepy Black Cloak ritual to curse Germany.
  • White Magic: But Russia uses the Orthodox Church to curse Japan.
• Five Man Band: The Allied Forces can be seen like this, to some degree. Roles are subjected to change, of course:
  • The Hero: America (or so he wants to believe)
  • The Lancer: England (Straight Man and sort of The Rival to America, sometimes Team Dad / Only Sane Man)
  • The Big Guy: Russia (The tallest and more unstable of the group)
  • The Smart Guy: France (mostly by default, though he can be quite sneaky and sly when he wants)
  • The Chick / The Heart: China (The most traditionally bishonen and kinda artsy. He's also The Woobie of the group.)

• Tsundere. England is heavy on The Smirk, especially◊ when◊ around◊ America◊. When he's in deredere mode, though, he sometimes shows such vulnerability that he qualifies as The Woobie. He's also called Tsundere by both fandom and Word Of God (specifically, the Drama CDs and some author notes).
  • America is an odd variation of the Type A Tsundere. His tsuntsun/The Smirk side is represented by his penchant to step on people's toes with his rampant KY-ness, cheerful Love Freak mannerisms and occasional bouts of arrogance. He also teases the Hell outta England, shoots down his advances and seems to have fun doing so; however, he has shown sadness and melancholy as he remembers their past (especially in "America Cleans Out The Storage"), and also some childish yet genuine worry when the other's sick, which can be seen as him being deredere.
    • Since England is the only one that America purposedly teases/annoys/etc., he can also be seen as a Type B.
• We Are Struggling Together: The Allies find working with each other difficult.
• Will They Or Wont They: America and England. My God, the Ship Tease between them...
  • They even have a strip that has a title that pretty much translates to The Moment Is Killed.
  • Reaches Everyone Can See It levels in one of the CD dramas, after everyone hears them arguing at night:
  Lithuania: R-Russia! Everyone was pretending not to hear anything!
  England: W-what? Everyone's awake, after all?
  France: That's because you were having a lover's quarrel here.

US of A - Alfred F. Jones

• Adult Child: Often acts like one.
  • Psychopathic Manchild: If America's featured in a Dark Fic, he's very likely to end up like this.
• Adventurer Archaeologist: Two of his hobbies are "archaeology" and "adventures".
• Attention Whore: So much so that, when he isn't the center of attention, he loses his will to do absolutely anything.
• Big Eater: America loves all matter of junk food, especially hamburgers. One strip features him becoming concerned about his weight causing him to try out different diets. (He still appears fit no matter what, of course.)
• Boisterous Bruiser: America is very eager and happy to fight the Axis Powers.
• Brainy Specs: America actually doesn't need his glasses for any vision purposes. The glasses represent Texas (he gets them around the time of its annexation) but it really looks like an opportunity to make him cuter.
• Captain Obvious: "It's not working!"
• Cool Plane: Planes seem to be a motif, seeing as he has one on his bomber jacket and likes to show England his airplane designs. He has one in the third chapter which comes from a design in an old Disney cartoon.
  • Stealth Insult: times two
    England: Such a (daft) design is beyond me, of course. How (idiotic) like you, America.
    America: That's good! Because I also made this technology for (beating the crap out of) you!
• Eagleland: America is a relatively benign mix of both flavors.
• Friend To All Living Things: As a child, he loved playing with bunnies. As an adult, he befriends whales and even aliens (hi, Tony). Ironically, this doesn't mean that he cares one bit about global warming, though.
  • But what about his giant robot to combat global warming?
    • He's probably more interested in the giant robot aspect... (see his birthday strip)
• Genius Ditz: Very good with aircraft and computers, despite his lack of common sense and geography skills.
• Heroic Wannabe: "I'll be the hero, of course!"

    • Of course, that leaves this troper (and history major) wondering if the manga-ka decided to overlook The Great Depression for that joke. Also, what would something like the American Civil War be represented as? An auto-immune disease?

• Instant Waking Skills: In the drama CD, he goes from being half-awake to on his feet rushing to get ready for work when he sees he's going to be late (thankfully for him Lithuania readied everything for him).
• It Runs On Nonsensoleum: He comes up with crazy inventions like a gun that makes people fall in love or a giant space robot to stop global warming. They never seem to get very far.
  • To be more specific, the gun was meant to make enemy soldiers fall in love with each other. If you thought it was just a joke, the joke's on you.
    • We can't forget the... VERY special shape of THAT gun, can we?
• Justice Will Prevail: He says things such as "Should we not fight in the name of justice?" and "I support you in the name of justice!".
• Katsuyuki Konishi - Who also voices Canada.
• Large Ham: He is often very energetic and loud, commanding all the attention for himself.
• Love Freak: He is "a nation of pioneers who think of everything in a positive light, is quick to take action, and loves heroes, justice, freedom, as well as hamburgers." He also gives a Rousing Speech talking about justice and defeating the evil Axis Powers in the beginning of Chapter Two.
• Master Of The Mixed Message: At least as far as England is concerned.
• Non Human Sidekick: He has whales and the visitor from outer space named Tony (who hates England for some reason, but is fond of Lithuania).
• Ron The Death Eater: He may have his jerkish moments in canon, but some people make him out to be an irredeemable Jerkass, especially when they want to make Canada look better or justify England hooking up with someone else.
• Say My Name EEEEENGLAAAAAAAND!!!!
• Slasher Smile: America has this while wielding a chainsaw along with Scary Shiny Glasses. Probably the only time America didn't look his normal self. Though it was only scary due to Canada's paranoia, as America was just using his chainsaw normally.
• Stepford Smiler: Fanfics often portray him as one of these. Even when canon shows him as being really that happy and childlike.
• Super Strength: Even as a child, America could pick up a buffalo and swing it around like a toy. He also can run around while dragging a car.
• Suspiciously Specific Denial: At the Allied Forces meeting, America and the pictures of the different Allies on the chalkboard. The others figure it out though. Interestingly, they work it out not just because he's the only one praising it, but also because he points out it's obviously done in American cartoon style.
• The Ditz: The 'lovable/obnoxious oaf Adult Child' variety.
• Verbal Tic: When he talks business, he ends his sentences with "-gates".
• Why Did It Have To Be Snakes: America is irrationally afraid of even the mention of ghosts. Oddly, he doesn't mind the aliens that hang around his house. Apparently, on Halloween, he inherits England's second sight for a moment, which is terrifying for him.
• You Fail Geography Forever: The embodiment of the trope. In one strip he mentions that he gets a headache whenever he has to look at any map that's not of himself.

England/UK of GB and NI - Arthur Kirkland

• All Love Is Unrequited: He apparently has a non-returned(?) crush on America. The most obvious hint is the Valentine's strip where England gives America some chocolates while blushing and being all embarrassed. America giving mixed signals (mocking England in one moment, claiming to be hurt because England didn't give him Valentine's chocolates in the next) doesn't exactly help matters, and neither does the fact that they're both Tsundere and *heavy* on the "tsun".
• Amazing Freaking Grace: His ringtone on his cellphone.
• Big Brother Mentor: He used to be this to America (and Canada) until it all went wrong.
• Big Ol Eyebrows: A sign of being a gentleman. Or something. And they're even bigger in the anime.
• Black Magic: His speciality. At one point, he tries to summon something evil and ends up with Russia.
  • White Magic: His Britannia Angel magic is a little less evil. Well, a lot sillier.
• The British Empire: Embodied by his days as a conquering pirate.
• British Stuffiness: He exhibits this to some degree, but it's also averted - he's a former delinquent with a short temper, a foul mouth and bad drinking habits.
• Cassandra Truth: Even though England can see magical creatures, almost nobody else can. So whenever he starts interacting with them, everyone else assumes he's gone off his rocker.
• Cloak And Dagger: England is the best of the Allied Forces when it comes to spying.
  England: ..When it comes to spies, no country can beat England-sama!
• Cluster F Bomb: He has the filthiest mouth of all the characters. Besides Tony, of course.
• Code Name of sorts: He's England but he represents the entire United Kingdom as well, so in the Japanese original he's called "Britain" (igirisu), even in historical periods when Great Britain didn't exist.
  • In Japanese fanworks he's usually called by his "real name", England (ingurando) by his older brothers, and sometimes by other countries as well before the 18th century.
• Cool Chair: He once tries to get back at America by tricking him into sitting on "Yorkshire's Infamous 'Sit and You Die' Busby Stoop Chair". Russia gets to it first and manages to out-evil it, causing it to explode.
• Covert Pervert: France insists England is one of these. When England denies it, he cites several sexual records held by English people.
  • In the first chapter of the (published) manga, "Meeting of the World" he's actually reading porn during the meeting. And then there's his "battle uniform"...
  • Fandom often depicts him as secretly being kinkier than France.
• Cry Cute: "Cleaning Up The Storage". That's all.
• Cuteness Proximity: England is very affectionate to the nice spirits that follow him around. Since no one else can see those spirits, they assume he's gone a little crazy.
• Defrosting Ice Queen Defrosting Ice Lord: He seems to be cold at first, but is surprisingly devoted to those he becomes friends with.
• Darker And Edgier: Due to the extensive and unpleasant history of British imperalism, he is extremely prone to this trope in fanworks, sometimes to the point of being an irredeemable Manipulative Bastard. May overlap with the Die For Our Ship entry below.
• Die For Our Ship: Some America/Russia shippers exaggerate England's possible opposition towards their pet couple (which would be somewhat understandable, considering Russia's instability) and make him a downright Yandere (as opposed to Russia, who is frequently woobiefied in these fics, despite being the main Yandere in the cast).
• Doting Parent Doting Older Brother: Towards little America, at any rate. He's not nearly as close to Canada (whom he occasionally mistakes for America), let alone Sealand.
• Does This Remind You Of Anything: The animated rendition of "England is about to die" strips have the bed-ridden England with feverish eyes, fever-reddened cheeks, slurred speech, slow breathing, etc. Something like this◊, if you wonder.
  • Shoops are obviously in the making. Same goes to icons
• Drowning My Sorrows: Apparently when he gets really drunk he tends to go on about that ungrateful whelp America leaving him.
• Expository Hairstyle Change: Parodied when a young England fails to pull one and France tricks him into fixing it... cutting it back to its original length.
• Fan Service With A Smile: The "sexy waiter" outfit.
• Former Teen Rebel: Although he is now a (self-styled) gentleman, he used to be a delinquent, represented by his younger days as a pirate.
  England: How do you like that, Spain? If you lay a finger on our pirates again, I'm going to kick your ass!

• Beware The Nice Ones: This cute maid brutalizes Prussia's army, watches him get ready to sleep with a spear in hand, and busts down a wall in his home to help out her beloved Austria.
• Blade On A Stick: Hungary's Weapon Of Choice (aside of her frying pan).
• Bodyguard Crush: Towards Austria.
• Bokukko: When she was a child, Hungary spoke rather boyishly, assuming that she was a boy and would grow up into a man (heck, when her breasts started developing, she actually thought that she was sick...). Ever since she grew out of this, though, she has perfectly feminine speech patterns, only reverting to boyish speech very rarely.
  • Wholesome Crossdresser: Himaruya originally intended to have Hungary as a crossdressing male. He used this idea for Poland instead.

  • This post from Himaruya's blog, done while the anime was running, has another Bokukko Belgium. Could be she's both Bokukko and The Ojou. Or possibly a Shorttank.
  • Note that other characters in the series will generally switch between their "military outfit" and "normal outfit" depending on the situation. Belgium's Bokukko look in her military garb could be just circumstantial, while her dress as The Ojou is her preferred look; or it could be the opposite, with her dolling up only for official meetings yet being Bokukko in daily life.

S. Italy - Lovino "Romano" Vargas

• Big Brother Complex: He utterly hates Germany because of Germany's connection to Italy. This doesn't stop him bothering younger Italy himself, or even pretending his little brother doesn't exist sometimes.

  • And there is an incestuous version of this when Romano and Italy get their hair curls/erogenous zones tangles together...while naked in bed. Then Germany answers Italy's distress call and untangles them.

  • Tsundere: South Italy is a fierce mix of all Type A varieties, partly out of insecurity that Spain only wants him for his inheritance and partly that his lack of domestic/artistic talents makes him inferior to his little brother. And yep, Romano's Tsundere side is specially strong when around Spain.
• The Mafia: Seen once as thugs. Informs his outlook. It makes a lot of difference to the page quote which Italy you mean.
• Perpetual Frowner
• The Unfavorite: To some degree, especially during his "childhood" days when Spain was more fixated on North Italy than him. He was seriously worried that he didn't have anything to offer, lacking his brother's domestic and artistic skills.
  • It is hinted that the reason he is so mean to Spain is that he has abandonment issues-and considering that Ancient Rome chose to leave with North Italy instead, that Spain tried to swap him for his little brother, and that he thinks Spain only wants him for his inheritance, no one here can really blame him.
    • Oh, and Spain passed up saving Romano that one time because he had to make 500 roses instead. To be fair, Spain's own economy was in no condition to save anyone, and he also felt really bad about it.

True Neutral

• Sibling Yin Yang — These two.
• Yodel Land — Kiku/Japan is ruthlessly disabused of his Heidi-style notions by meeting Vasch. Liechtenstein and her blond pigtails and Drindl skirts arguably play it straight though.

Switzerland - Vasch Zwingli

• Big Brother Complex: Switzerland is very protective of his little sister Liechtenstein.
• Rich Bitch Rich Jerkass: He's a miser, paranoid, xenophobic and trigger-happy. The only person that he is close to is his sister Liechtenstein (and formerly Austria, even though Switzerland denies it until the cows come home), which shows that he might be a Jerk With A Heart Of Gold (only VERY heavy on the "jerk" part, if not The Pesci).
• He Was Never My Heterosexual Life Partner: He does not like to remember that he and Austria used to be friends as children.
• Morality Pet: Who knows how much more of a jerk he would be without Liechtenstein around.
• Real Men Wear Pink: Girly pink pyjamas, that is. They're a present from Liechtenstein; she gave him the wrong ones by mistake, but he doesn't mind... because they're from his sister.
• Relationship Voice Actor: His seiyuu is Romi Paku aka Edward Elric. His sister? Voiced by Rie Kugimiya aka Alphonse Elric.
• The Gunslinger: His Weapons Of Choice are several different guns, but personality-wise, he's more like a parody of the trope. Not to be confused with that other Vash, though.
• Tsundere: Switzerland is a combination of Tsun Type A and He Was Never My Heterosexual Life Partner to Austria. The Gunslinger is especially fond of The Violent Approach (duh), going deredere (and VERY much so) only for Liechtenstein.
• Unlucky Childhood Friend: Towards Austria, arguably. Fanworks are fond of making his feelings to him completely onesided *and* without possible reciprocation.
• Why Couldnt You Be Different: He "created" Austria (whose name means 'eastern division') to fight, which is not really Austria's strong point.

Liechtenstein

• Dude Looks Like A Lady Lady Looks Like A Dude: Once, Liechtenstein wears an uniform similar to Switzerland's. When people see her, she's mistaken for his younger brother.
• Dying Alone: Thanks to Switzerland, she barely escaped from this.
  • I Owe You My Life: Predictably, Liechtenstein is very grateful to her brother and thinks he definitely saved her.
• Fan Nickname: She doesn't have an official human name, but some fans call her "Lili Zwingli" to bypass that. It comes from a shortening of her nation name and from the Lily flower, which is sometimes considered to be a national flower of Liechtenstein.
• Heartwarming Orphan: According to the published manga, the poor little girl was on her own and passed through several hardships before she was found and adopted by Switzerland. No mention of her "biological" parents or anybody who took care of her and her people until then.
  • Didn't Hidakaz's notes imply her former guardian was Austria?
• Important Haircut: Liechtenstein used to have long braids. At the beginning of her first strip, she cuts said braids off to both look more like her brother and be more comfortable. The webcast episode featuring these strips actually begins with her cutting off said braids.
• Moe: Even by the series' standards. Who wouldn't go deredere for such a sweetie? Miraculously, she has yet to be seriously bashed by "feminist" fans. It could be the fact that she is still a little girl.
• Monochromatic Eyes
• Pettanko: In the Lady Looks Like A Dude incident, when the old woman mistakes Liechenstein for a boy, poor Liechtenstein goes Blue With Shock and touches her very flat chest.
• Rie Kugimiya: Her seiyuu, Playing Against Type.
• Tertiary Sexual Characteristics: Due to her, um, lack of secondary characteristics, Switzerland just buys her a blue hair ribbon so no one mistakes her for a boy again.

• Every Girl Is Cuter With Hair Decs: Both Ukraine and Belarus use hairbands. Ukraine also adds some hairpins.
• Five Bad Band: If the Baltics and Slavs are seen as a parody of this trope...
  • The Big Bad and The Brute: Russia (Psychopathic Manchild version, obviously)
  • The Dragon: Lithuania (rather... unwillingly)

• Tomboy And Girly Girl: Ukraine and Belarus are an unusual example- appearance-wise, Ukraine is the tomboy and Belarus the girly girl, but with their personalities, the roles are reversed with Ukraine being a sweet, gentle Shrinking Violet and Belarus being an angry-looking Yandere.
• Yandere - Yangire: Russia, Russia, Russia. Latvia shows signs of this as well, likely because of Russia. Also, Russia's sister Belarus: she is obsessed with her older brother, is often represented with a knife, and shares Russia's penchant of abusing people who show care for her - especially Lithuania... Heck, Belarus is so Yanderiffic that Russia is scared of her!

Estonia - Edward Vonbock

• Isnt It Sad: The most forgotten of the Baltics (Lampshaded in the quote above). On the other hand, he's the one less likely to be picked on by Russia, so...
• Hollywood Nerd: Has quite the knack for computers.
  • Meganekko
• Only Sane Man: Seems to be the most stable of the bros.
• Uncle Pennybags Brother Pennybags: Estonia is the rich one of the Baltic states and always happy to help them out. One strip is an advertising pitch for more tourism. He is also described as a Honors Student and 'reeks of money'.

Latvia - Raivis Galante

• And Call Him George And Call Him Latvia: See Shrinking Violet.
• Crossdressing Voices: In the CD dramas, he's the only Baltic voiced by a female: the aforementioned Rie Kugimiya.
  • Averted in the anime series, where he's voiced by Kazutaka Tanada (Poland)
• Cute Shotaro Boy: The boy is Moe beyond belief, even for this series.
• Shrinking Violet: To the extreme. When Russia wonders why Latvia's always twitching when he's around, he grabs Latvia and demands he stop. Latvia does... but goes into a coma and almost dies. Cut to Estonia's horrified screams.
• Water Works: Is always about to burst into tears.
• Yangire: Slightly hinted as one in the Lily of the Valley incident.

Lithuania - Toris Laureatis

• Diving Save: In the Battle of Tannenburg, Lithuania saves Poland just as Prussia is about to bring a sword down on his head, as well as having a knife against Prussia's throat. Poland lampshades the trope when he remarks on how Lithuania was "totally late".
• Dogged Nice Guy: To Belarus, even when she hates him.
• Dont You Dare Pity Me: Lithuania keeps all of his anguish hidden from everyone else.
• Gender Flip: Apparently, Himaruya intended for Lithuania to be female at first, but later changed his mind and used said idea for Hungary instead.
• Good Scars Evil Scars: He has several, apparently due to Russia's abuse. Which Poland discovers in the bath.
• Horrible Judge Of Character: Lithuania and Poland's friendship comes off as extremely one-sided, and though Lithuania is frequently exasperated by Poland's antics, he still works hard to stay with and protect him. After all, the alternative is Russia.
  • Following the 'Liet's Scars' strip, and the original 'Meeting of the World' strip (in which Poland confronts the much feared Russia in Lithuania's defence), alongside the new character profiles, it seems that their friendship is much less one-sided than in the initial strips. Poland's character has changed over the years, and he is much less selfish in the newer strips.
    • A recently scanlated strip has a dream sequence in which a younger Lithuania tells Poland that he hates him for being so selfish. Poland's response? "I, like, totally don't care what [Lithuania] thinks of me. Even if you, like, hate me, it totally doesn't change that I like you." Then he says that he'll try to be less selfish.
  • Actually, this only seems to apply to his crush on Belarus. He puts up with Poland and Russia mostly because he can't avoid it and wants to try getting the best out of his complicated situation, not because he's blind to their flaws.
• Spell My Name With An S: So was it Laurinaitis, Lolinaitis, Rolinatis, or what?
• The Woobie: Oh, Lithuania.
  • Sympathetic Sue: If the fanworkers forget that he's got more in his personality than woobieness, Lithuania is very liable to end up as this instead.
• Yamato Nadeshiko. He might qualify as a male version (being sweet, hard-working, and good at cooking and housekeeping), if he wasn't the main Woobie of the cast
• Yank The Dogs Chain: He never seems to get what he wants. Because of Russia, Poland and Lithuania are split apart. For a while, Lithuania works for America and much prefers that life, but the Great Depression hits and he has to go back to working for Russia. When he finally gets a date with his crush Belarus, she breaks his fingers.

Poland - Feliks Łukasiewicz

• Ambiguously Gay: Poland is hyperactive, talks like a valley girl, and occasionally crossdresses. Obviously his sexuality isn't stated (but since most of the other countries are male...).
• Character Development: Starts as very selfish and childish, starts to mature later. He's one of the few who stand up to Russia, after all, and does so to protect Lithuania.
• Cultural Posturing: Poland used to treat Lithuania like his lackey and tried to make Liet live like him. Without any bad intentions, yeah, but still not the best thing.
• Die For Our Ship: Again, as a side-effect of the Russia/Lithuania vs. Poland/Lithuania Ship To Ship Combat.
• Dumb Blonde: Played for laughs mostly. Then again, the Ship To Ship Combat tends to exaggerate it.
• I Surrender Suckers: In the Battle of Tannenburg, Poland uses this against Prussia to let Lithuania attack and disarm him.
• The Scrappy: Mostly due to Die For Our Ship reasons (see above), but apparently his personality rubs many people the wrong way.
• Spell My Name With An S: Guys, it's Feliks.
  • Justified: The letter "x" doesn't exist in the Polish alphabet.
• Valley Girl Valley Boy: Like, totally, emighawd. =)

Belarus - Natalia Arlovskaya

• Die For Our Ship: Much less than expected (thank God), but it still pops out once in a while in Russia-centered fics.

• Emotionless Girl: Or at least, she acts that way most of the time. When not around Russia, that is.
• Girl With Psycho Weapon: In the first volume of the manga and the first episode of the anime, Belarus is seen holding a knife to Latvia. Since she's a Yandere, well...

Ukraine

• Even The Girls Want Her: She's very popular among female fans.
• Expository Hairstyle Change: As a little girl, Ukraine had long-ish, braided hair◊. Now she keeps it short.
• Fan Nickname: Yekaterina "Katyusha" Braginskaya. Not her official name, but it has picked up steam as a name in Fanon, coming from her headband or "katyusha" and how "Yekaterina"("Catherine") is a more or less common name for Slavic women.
  • Names To Run Away From Really Fast: Russians call three things 'Katyusha': girls, headbands... and rocket artillery.
• Gag Boobs: In the anime, Ukraine's enormous breasts go constantly "boing" and make strange little noises as she moves. Obviously this is highly symbolic; it is a well-known fact that Ukraine has huge tracts of land. *rimshot*
  • Gainaxing: Obviously, the anime takes it and cranks it Up To Eleven. With beach ball bouncing sound effects!

    Russia: Nobody's answering the door.
    Latvia: That's odd...I know I can hear her breasts moving...

• Naive Everygirl: And boy, is she The Chew Toy because of that.
• Perpetual Poverty: She's often seen freaking out about her poor economy.
• Shrinking Violet: Her aforementioned economy-related woes and failure to get more friends outside the Baltic and Soviet circles often leave the poor girl quite... distressed.
• Team Mom: Ukraine was this for Belarus and Russia when they were children; she gave Russia a scarf once when he was cold, and he still wears it as his trademark. She's also said to be the one who fixes her siblings' Yandere screw-ups, and is among the few nation-tans that Russia shows a bit of his almost nonexistant deredere side to.
  Russia (on Ukraine): "She has a big heart and is often targeted because of it. She's a bit of a crybaby too."

Finland - Tino Väinämöinen

• Cloud Cuckoo Lander: Just look at his original name suggestions for their pup.
• Cute Bruiser: It's hard to believe what his profile says about his strength in the battlefield until you learn about the Winter War...
  • If you read the strip referring to the Polish-Swedish war, you'll notice that Finland is actually quite eager and happy to get into battle whereas Sweden is more reluctant and fears that Finland will get hurt, even pulling him and the troops out of the fight later.
• Foreign Queasine: Unlike England, Finland knows how to cook. If only he wouldn't.
• Hey Its That Voice: Takahiro Mizushima. Hello, Rolo Lamperouge, Nagasumi, Kagero Usui and Romeo Candorebanto Montague.
• Meaningful Name: Väinämöinen is the name of the hero of the Finnish/Karelian epic poem Kalevala.

Norway

• Deadpan Snarker: Apparently limited to Denmark. Who does not get it.
• Every Girl Is Cuter With Hair Decs This Guy Uses Hair Decs: Wears a cross-shaped hairclip.
• Idiot Hair: His floats!
• Joshikousei Danshigakusei: at least in this pic. Watch this space. It's probably supposed to be a Navy uniform, though.

• White Haired Pretty Boy

Sweden - Berwald Oxenstierna

• Death Glare: Although it's pretty much his normal facial expression, whether he likes it or not.
• BFS: His Weapon Of Choice is a two-hands sword.
  • Drop The Hammer: Fanon sometimes depicts him as using a war hammer as well.
  • Dual Wield: Official art has shown him with either his BFS or what could be a quarterstaff.
• Face Of A Thug: His height and serious face scares everyone. Even if he doesn't intend it.
• Gentle Giant / Real Men Wear Pink: Sweden looks like a huge and scary Big Guy... but is very domestic, an excellent babysitter and even sews his old clothes personally before giving them to Finland when the other remarks on their height difference.
• Huge Schoolgirl Huge Male Nation-tan: In the 5th anniversary strip, Sweden genuinely wants to say some nice things to the fans... but is so blushy and embarrassed that he cannot, much to his and Finland's dismay.
  Sweden: I wanna say all kinds of nice things... but... (HUGE BLUSH)... 'm embarr'ssed!
  Finland: Hey! Su! Whoa, are you okay?!
• Kichiku Megane: Possibly parodied, since he looks like one of these yet is anything but cruel and cold.
• Kuudere and Perpetual Frowner: Ooooooh, so much. The only time he's been shown smiling in the comic was when he "adopted" Sealand... by purchasing him off the internet. Not like that, you know.
• Retired Outlaw: According to his profile he's taken a break from ruling with his old viking ways.
  • His profile is referring to either that or the Swedish Empire.
• Single Target Sexuality: Apparently, Himaruya's old notes say that he's "gay for Finland". Whether it still stands or not, it's still up for confirmation.
• Stoic Spectacles: He speaks in a grunting dialect, rarely changes his fearsome facial expression, and scares pretty much everybody when they first meet him.
• The Unintelligible: It took some time for this troper to fully understand Sweden's grunt speak. The author based it on his trouble with Japan's northern accent (more exactly, Tohoku accent) that some of his staff use.

• Boisterous Bruiser: He's often depicted as such in fanworks.
  • Considering how he's shown drinking beer in one of thew two strips he's been in and how loud he is in his opinions (to the point that Norway strangles him with his tie), this may have been partially confirmed in canon. More on Danish and Scandinavian stereotypes here.
• Ensemble Darkhorse: Is becoming more and more of this. And he has yet to even show up in the comic. Nevermind. He and the Nordics as a whole have just showed up in ONE comic.

• But Not Too Black: Although the Seychelles is in Africa, it's population are all descended from a mix of colonists, chiefly French, African, Indian and Chinese people because it had no indigenous natives, so the fact that she's drawn white in the monochrome manga and is usually pretty fair (but officially "light brown") is accurate. However, this might explain why she's the only sub-saharan African country to feature, because she's "Not Too Black".
  • Semi-Jossed. Cameroon has just been officially released, so no longer the only sub-Saharan country. And his skin tone is darker than Seychelles.
• Country Mouse Island Mouse: In "Gakuen Hetalia".
• Genki Girl
• Every Girl Is Cuter With Hair Decs: Her red ribbons.
• Joshikousei: She's the star of Gakuen Hetalia, as already mentioned.
• New Transfer Student: In the Gakuen Hetalia game, France convinces her to join the World Academy. When she draws her national crest on the chalkboard, the other members of her Africa Class laugh so hard at how cheesy it is they need to be taken to the school infirmary.
• Nubile Savage
• Only Sane Man: Averted. In Gakuen Hetalia, Seychelles attempts to put a curse on England, only to have him reveal himself as a lover of black magic as he starts begging for her to teach him. This causes Seychelles to think on how strange everyone in World Academy W is, not realizing that she is in fact just as weird as everyone else.
• Plucky Girl: As attested by the quote mentioned above.
• Sassy Black Woman: The more positive side of this trope. She occasionally says snarky things about her (at the time) boss England as well, and is said to have dumped France in Christmas. Look below as well.
• Tsundere: In Gakuen Hetalia, she's a Type B that goes from demure and polite to screaming or swearing as soon as England or France push her too far, either by being bossy (England) or by groping her (France).
  • In the original Gakuen Hetalia script, one of the "bad endings" (the one where she joins the Axis) drives it very straight to the point, as it finished with Seychelles screaming and swearing that she'll kill England the next time they meet.
  • This makes her a very enjoyable character, as she can go from being timid to kicking and screaming in ten seconds flat, to both her "boss" England and her childhood friend France.

(In one strip Russia spends a whole meeting sitting in his lap because he didn't notice that Canada was already sitting in the chair. Later Russia comments to Belarus on how comfortable his chair was.)
• What Measure Is A Non Badass: Some fans have a tendency to turn him into a Memetic Badass and Deadpan Snarker instead of the fairly nice, unassertive guy he is in canon.
• The Woobie: He might be ignored in canon, but fans have not failed to recognize him.

• All Love Is Unrequited: Korea's incestuous affection towards China is not returned at all. He's not much luckier when he tries to pursue Japan, either.
• Annoying Younger Sibling: To both China and Japan; he's loud, obnoxious, and says that they should call him their older brother.
• Asian And Nerdy: In his profile, it's said he loves the internet and games. Truth In Television to some degree; Korea apparently has the highest percentage of households with Internet access in the world.
• Cain And Abel: In Dark Fic, if the not-featured-in-canon North Korea appears, his and Yonsoo's relationship goes like this.
• Completely Missing The Point: Korea's mind-reading binoculars; he utterly misinterprets what they show him.

• Tsundere: During a conversation with Japan, he claims to have invented tsundere (all types, presumably). He is not one himself, but an Annoying Younger Sibling with traces of Hopeless Suitor to China and Japan.
• What Could Have Been: A prototype design for Korea had the character as a girl◊ with aspirations to be a pop idol. The design for the female Korea was later reused for the lead of another, short-lived webcomic by Himaruya, entitled MoeKan.

Taiwan

• Bratty Teenage Daughter Bratty Little Sister: One of the earlier Himaruya sketches has her poking China on the cheek and demanding that leave Japan alone, while saying the quote above.
• The Beast Master: She's often represented with tigers in fanart.
• Chinese Girl
• Fan Nickname: To cover up for her current lack of a proper "human name", some fans call her "Mei Mei" (which means "little sister" in Chinese). Taiwanese fans also nickname her "Wanwan".
• Fanon: Taiwan is depicted in fanwork as either:
  • a Lady Of War or a Dragon Lady during WWII;
  • the target of a Hikaru Genji Plan from either Japan or China (more frequently the first);
  • having her feet bound per China's orders until her island came under Japanese rule (Truth In Television, sadly, since many Taiwanese women were subjected to foot binding until at least 1915, when the Japanese administration banned it).
• Flower Motifs: Her hair accessories. Those are Asian plum flowers, which is the national flower of Taiwan. Strange, it's one of the symbolic vestiges of Taiwan's Chinese claim.

  • Not only is he "not too black", he's not black at all. Which makes sense as Egyptians aren't and never were black. Black Africans are from Sub-Sahara Africa. North Africa (where Egypt is) is mostly Arab/Middle Easterner.
• Cute Mute: Egypt is not much of a talker. Though, at one point, France asked him if he could even talk, to which Egypt responded, "Would you like to buy something?"
