The Band of Nine
The Ninepenny Kings
A group of nine outlaws, exiles, pirates and sellsword captains who banded together in Essos to carve out kingdoms from Essos, the Stepstones, and Westeros for each of its members during the reign of Aegon V and Jahaerys II. They were responsible for the War of the Ninepenny Kings.
- Ambition Is Evil: All of them hoped to become kings or queens.
- Big Bad Duumvirate: The 9 seem to have acted in concert, making their decisions via committee.
- Expy: A cross-work one to the Nazgul, being a villainous band of nine whose leader was killed in single combat in the last battle of the war. Unlike the Nazgul, they're all distinct entities who have formed an alliance.
- In-Series Nickname: "The Ninepenny Kings" after Prince Duncan remarked that crowns were being sold nine a penny.
- Legion of Doom: In the eyes of their enemies.
- Uncertain Doom: Only Maelys and Alequo's deaths have been confirmed, with the fates of the other seven unknown. It's strongly implied Alequo was the only one left by the time of his death, however.
- See the House Blackfyre character page.
The Old Mother
A pirate queen.
- Evil Old Folks: Implied by her nickname.
- Never Mess with Granny: Implied by her nickname.
- Only Known by Their Nickname: It is clear "The Old Mother" is just her alias.
- Pirate: Her job description.
- The Smurfette Principle: As the only female of the group.
Samarro Saan
The Last Valyrian
A notorious pirate from a family of pirates and a member of the Band of Nine.
- Alliterative Name: Samarro Saan.
- Last of His Kind: His nickname is meant to invoke this, despite not actually being the last Valyrian.
- The Family That Slays Together: All the Saan's are pirates. His son Salladhor has inherited the family business.
- Famous Ancestor: Of Salladhor Saan.
- Pirate: It's the family trade.
- White Hair, Black Heart: Valyrian features and member of a band that included the notorious Maelys the Monstrous.
Xhobar Qhoqua
The Ebon Prince
An exile prince from the Summer Isles turned leader of a sellsword company.
- The Captain: Of his sellsword company.
- The Evil Prince: Implied by his nickname. He most likely aimed to return to the Summer Isles and become king over them all.
- The Exile: In the Summer Isles, princes are exiled after losing a war. He then establishes on Essos.
- In-Series Nickname: The Ebon Prince.
- Token Minority: The non white Ninepenny King, as emphasized by his nickname.
- Private Military Contractors: He's the leader of a sellsword company.

- The Captain: Of his sellsword company.
- In-Series Nickname: The Lord of Battles.
- Private Military Contractors: He's a mercenary, and the leader of his own sellsword company.
Tom
Spotted Tom the Butcher
A Westerosi sellsword captain.
- The Butcher: Its in his nickname!
- The Captain: Of his sellsword company.
- The Exile: A Westerosi exile (presumably from House Santagar) established on Essos.
- In-Series Nickname: Spotted Ton the Butcher.
- Names to Run Away from Really Fast: Never trust a man named "The Butcher".
- Private Military Contractors: A mercenary captain.
Ser Derrick Fossoway
The Bad Apple
An exiled Westerosi knight with a notoriously black reputation.
- Black Knight: Has a "black" reputation. In fact that's pretty much the only thing we know about him.
- The Exile: Driven from Westeros. Whether this was for being a Blackfyre supporter (not unlikely given his association with Maelys) or just a general bastard is unknown.
- In-Series Nickname: The Bad Apple, a pun on the Fossoway sigil.
- Names to Run Away from Really Fast: If you think about it, making "bad apple" jokes has to be pretty tempting wherever the Fossoways are concerned, so Ser Derrick's apparent monopoly on the nickname says a lot about what a deeply unpleasant man he must have been.
Nine Eyes
Captain of the Jolly Fellows, a group of mercenary pirates.
- The Captain: Of the Jolly Fellows.
- Only Known by Their Nickname: He's only known by his alias of "Nine Eyes".
- Pirate: Pirate-for-hire anyway.
- Private Military Contractors: The Jolly Fellows were a piratical mercenary company.
Alequo Adarys
The Silvertongue, the Tyrant of Tyrosh
A Tyroshi merchant prince who sacked Tyrosh with the Band of Nine and installed himself as Tyrant, only to be poisoned by his own Queen.
- Alliterative Name: Two "A's"

- In-Series Nickname: The Silvertongue and the Tyrant of Tyrosh.
- Intrepid Merchant: So intrepid he involves himself with a band of mercenaries and pirates to become ruler of his own city.
- Last of His Kind: Even after the Band of Nine was defeated and lost all its holdings, the Tyrant managed to hold unto control of Tyrosh for six more years, before being poisoned by his own wife.
- Screw the Rules, I Have Money!: Implied to have been the Nine's financial backer.
- The Usurper: Usurped the rule of Tyrosh from the Archon.
