The Tribes

    Saboga
Color/ namesake: yellow/ Saboga island
Members: Ethan Zohn, Jenna Lewis, Jerri Manthey, Rudy Boesch, Rupert Boneham, Tina Wesson

  • A House Divided: At first from internal drama, then from literal breaking apart into other tribes. Once they hit the merge, only Jenna Lewis and Rupert remain. They do not join an alliance together.
  • The Artifact: Was dissolved into the other two tribes early on as the result of losing a specific challenge.
  • The Bus Came Back: Like everyone else this season.
  • Epic Fail: Though not as bad as others, Saboga lost the first two immunity challenges and had the worst shelter of the tribes.
  • Failure Tribe: The first tribe to be dissolved before the merge.
  • The Fellowship Has Ended: Once the tribe is dissolved and split evenly between the Chapera and Mogo Mogo tribes. Following this, the tribe never gets the chance to reunite, as Ethan and Jerri are voted out right before the merge.
  • Huffle Puff House: They were chosen to dissolve (equally) into the other tribes early on, and only Jenna Lewis and Rupert make it particularly far.
  • My Greatest Second Chance: Played straight by Jenna Lewis and Rupert.
  • The Team
  • Teeth-Clenched Teamwork: The patient zero of the "winners must go" drama, with two winners aboard.

    Chapera
Color/ namesake: red/ Chapera island
Members (start/ absorption): Alicia Calaway, Amber Brkich, Jenna Lewis, Rob Cesternino, "Boston" Rob Mariano, Rupert Boneham, Sue Hawk, "Big" Tom Buchanan
Members (swap): Amber Brkich, Jerri Manthey, Lex van der Berghe, Kathy Vavrick-O'Brien, Shii Ann Huang

    Mogo Mogo
Color/ namesake: green/ Mogo Mogo o Pajaro island
Members (start/ absorbtion): Colby Donaldson, Ethan Zohn, Jenna Morasca, Jerri Manthey, Kathy Vavrick-O'Brien, Lex van der Berghe, Richard Hatch, Shii Ann Huang
Members (swap): Alicia Calaway, Jenna Lewis, "Boston" Rob Mariano, Rupert Boneham, "Big" Tom Buchanan

  • A House Divided
  • Always Second Best: It's brought up by Colby that this was something that actually served them well during the beginning of the season when three tribes were present, as they were often able to do just well enough to stay ahead of at least one of the other tribes in challenges and avoid the severe consequences that would befall the last-place finisher. In the earliest stage of the game, they're the only one of the three tribes that avoided going to Tribal Council, only losing Jenna because she quit to be with her ailing mother. However, once the Saboga tribe is dissolved, leaving only two tribes left to compete in challenges, this comes back to hurt them. They find themselves unable to best the Chapera tribe in the majority of competitions, whittling their numbers down to the point that they come into the merge with a sizable disadvantage that they aren't able to overcome (even with Kathy and Shii Ann's individual immunity wins).
  • Badass Crew: Subverted. The tribe was stacked with some of the best challenge competitors evernote  but before Saboga's dissolve they consistently come in second place while after the dissolve they go on a losing streak.
  • The Bus Came Back
  • Dwindling Party
  • Idiot Ball: Voting out Jerri over Amber to appease Boston Rob.
  • Irony: Before the tribe scramble, Mogo Mogo had the most decorated members; specifically two past winners (the one that invented the modern game of Survivor and the one that won the most individual immunity challenges and most jury votes at that point), that time's most celebrated runner-up and two competent third-placers who had a high chance of winning. Ultimately, not only was this the first tribe to be fully eliminated, its highest ranking member was the one who didn't make it to the merge and jury in her original season.
  • My Greatest Second Chance: Played straight by Shii Ann.
  • Repetitive Name
  • Teeth-Clenched Teamwork
  • World of Ham: Lets see. We have Richard Hatch, Lex van den Berghe, Jenna Morasca, Colby Donaldson, Kathy Varvick-O'Brien, and Shii-Ann Huang.

    Chaboga Mogo
Color/ namesake: blue/ blend of the other tribe names
Members: Alicia Calaway, Amber Brkich, Jenna Lewis, Kathy Vavrick-O'Brien, Lex van der Berghe, "Boston" Rob Mariano, Rupert Boneham, Shii Ann Huang, "Big" Tom Buchanan
The merged tribe.

Finalists

    1st. Amber Brkich
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/s8_amber_brkich.jpg
Age/ home/ season: 25/ Beaver, Pennsylvania/ 2. The Australian Outback
Tribe: Chapera -> Chaboga Mogo
After All-Stars, Amber competed with Rob on The Amazing Race 7 and The First The Amazing Race All-Stars.
  • Born Lucky: Amber said she was lucky to be in an alliance with Boston Rob and to not be voted out at Final Tribal Council.
  • Catchphrase: Surprisingly averted. Not once in this season does she say her old catchphrase of "Oh my god, it's so good!"
    • Mario from Funny 115 even wrote about it in his website, here is the paragraph,
"Do you even have to ask if I went through All-Stars and counted the number of times Amber says "Oh my godddd, it's sooooo good"? Hell yeah, of course I did! But guess what? She never says it during All-Stars. Not even once. Amber must have watched Australia back in 2001 and gotten annoyed with herself too, because it's like she made a conscious effort not to say it at any point during All-Stars. And that superhuman ability to change and adapt is what made Lamber the single best player in Survivor history. Just admit it, she is now officially the best of the best."
  • Dark Horse Victory: Did anyone expect Amber of all people to win going into the season?
    • A paragraph from Mario Lanza's Funny 115 says about this,
"By the way, nowadays Amber is mostly known as being Boston Rob's wife. She is also known as the winner of All-Star Survivor. She beat the All-Stars, she was the best of the best, and by definition that means she is now the single best player in the history of Survivor. Isn't that depressing? Little Lamber is officially the best player in the history of Survivor. And it's true. Oh my godddddd. It's soooooooo true."
  • Diabolus ex Machina: Subverted. The tribe switch should have been this for her, but Boston Rob told Lex was going to take care of him if he saved her. Amber built off of this to make the infamous deal that saved herself.
  • Fanservice Pack/Hotter and Sexier: Amber became very beautiful this time around. She even won "Hottest Female Castaway" in America's Tribal Council.
  • Irony: Compared to everyone else, Amber is easily the least memorable contestant before this season started. In spite of this, she won the game.
  • Law of Chromatic Superiority: She was a part of the red Chapera tribe through all three of its iterations. Notable that by some impossible coincidence, she was the only one who didn't switch tribes when literally everyone else did.
  • Ms. Fanservice
  • My Greatest Second Chance: The Ur-Example. She was the first person ever to win Survivor on their second attempt. And to this day, Amber has argubaly won Survivor bigger than anyone else, leaving with a million dollars, a car (technically two), a husband, another one hundred thousand dollars curtesy of said husband's final placement, and another million down the road thanks to her husband winning a season himself.
  • Nice Girl: In contrast to...well, everyone, Amber was pretty much the nicest castaway this season. Mario Lanza even points out in his Survivor Historian Podcast that in all of Amber's confessionals, she never slams someone or gets snippy like the other contestants, which could in fact be foreshadowing or a hint that she would be the Sole Survivor.
  • Official Couple: With Boston Rob.
  • Pink Means Feminine: Amber usually wore pink clothing.
  • The Quiet One: Her ability to fly under the radar and avoid blowing up at others helped to keep the target off her back in the early stages of the game. Shii Ann was one of the few to pick up on this and noted how she was being underrated by the other players as a potential threat because of it.
  • Sole Survivor: The winner of Survivor: All Stars.
  • Spotlight-Stealing Squad: Because of her relationship with Boston Rob.
  • Unexpected Character: See Irony and Dark Horse Victory.
  • What Beautiful Eyes!: Shii Ann stated this about her green eyes.

    2nd. "Boston" Rob(ert) Mariano
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/s8_rob_mariano.jpg
Age/ home/ season: 27/ Canton, Massachussets/ 4. Marquesas
Tribe: Chapera -> Mogo Mogo -> Chapoga Mogo

After All-Stars, Rob competed with Amber on The Amazing Race 7 and The First The Amazing Race All-Stars. Rob later competed on ''Heroes vs. Villains'' and ''Redemption Island''

  • The Ace: He won four out of the seven individual immunity challenges during the merge, two rewards, and was basically the one who carried Chapera in challenges during the pre-merge. Plus he used his construction experience to help build the best shelter of all three tribes.
  • Affably Evil
  • Anti-Hero
  • Bittersweet Ending: He lost the game, but won a wife. Plus, it was his reputation from this appearance that let him compete twice more.
  • Boisterous Bruiser
  • Breakout Character: While he was already this in Marquesas, his performance this season is what elevated him to a Survivor legend.
  • The Chessmaster
  • Chronic Backstabbing Disorder: Just ask Lex, Alicia, "Big" Tom, and Rob Cesternino.
  • Deadpan Snarker
  • The Don: Boston Rob is the prototype of the Survivor Mafioso archetype (later Russell Hantz, Tony Vlachos, Rodney La Voie, Joe Mena, Domenick Abbate and Wardog would follow). He is presented as the big mob boss this season. After he says he's going to vote out Lex, Kathy says, "That was a total godfather move."
  • Even Evil Has Standards: He maybe a manipulative player and an abrasive person, but that doesn't mean he lacks moral fibers. People have gotten too cruel for him at least twice:
    • He got annoyed with Jeff Probst when he assumed Jenna Morasca was only quitting because she couldn't handle the elements.
    • He was openly disgusted with Richard rubbing up against Sue during the redesigned "Attack Zone" challenge.
  • From Nobody to Nightmare: Rob had one of the two least impressive resumes going into the game (the other being Shii Ann; both were eliminated before the jury stage in their previous seasons), and he ends up dominating almost everyone.
  • Graceful Loser: Given that he married the winner, he probably didn't care that he lost anyway.
  • Hard Work Hardly Works: As stated before, he was the one who controlled the game. However, in his wake, he left three very angry people who voted against him at final tribal council.
  • Honor Before Reason: Boston Rob didn't believe that he could win against Amber or Jenna and took Amber to the final two to honor his alliance with her.
  • Iconic Outfit: His New England Patriots cap, his black sleeveless shirt, and the medallion that he always wears around his neck.
  • I Lied: To anyone he made an alliance with and then back-stabbed. Most stinging example of this definitely goes to Lex.
  • Jerkass: In addition to his ruthless gameplay, Rob regularly insults just about everybody on the island for no reason both to their faces and behind their backs. Comes back to bite him in the ass when he gets to the end and faces a slew of angry jurors.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Jerk
  • Lonely at the Top: Played with. Rob came in second, not first, and he and Amber do end up together, but there’s no denying that his determination to become the Sole Survivor regardless of who he has to screw over led to some permanently burned bridges.
  • Love Makes You Evil: Kathy accused him of this.
  • Manipulative Bastard: Possibly reaching levels of the Magnificent Bastard. Rob shows casual disregard for the rules, such as when he wanted to break open the box full of rice, even though he was told that he had to wait until his tribe found all the keys first. He even insults Jeff by calling him a "pretty boy". On the other hand, his willingness to not stick to tried-and-true strategy is what helped him get to final two, and is a trademark of whatever show he goes on.
  • Mr. Fanservice: Amber took notice in the shelter building challenge.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Not until the very, very end. See Tears of Remorse down below.
  • My Greatest Second Chance: Doesn't win, but this season is regarded as Boston Rob's absolute best. Yes, even compared to Redemption Island, which he won.
  • Nothing Personal: Breaking his deal with Lex, who took it quite the opposite.
  • Official Couple: With Amber.
  • One Rob Limit: Deals with this once again, this time with Rob Cesternino.
  • Only Known by Their Nickname: Boston Rob
  • Poor Communication Kills: At Final Tribal Council, Rob did a poor job of answering the jury's questions. This was especially true with Alicia, who asked him to repeat his answer, and Big Tom, who he accused of plotting against him.
  • The Rival: To Ethan as the two are some of the biggest physical threats. The two square off in multiple challenges and Boston Rob repeatedly teases Ethan throughout the season. Much of these was due in part to the fact that Boston Rob had feelings for Amber while Ethan was Amber's amicable ex-boyfriend.
    • In pure Dramatic Irony though, the two would become best friends thirty-two seasons later
  • The Runner-Up Takes It All: Rob did marry Amber. Additionally, his performance this season cemented his status as one of the show's key Breakout Characters and directly contributed to him coming back to play several times afterwards.
  • Self-Proclaimed Liar
  • Sleeves Are for Wimps
  • Smug Snake
  • Spotlight-Stealing Squad: This season, Boston Rob gave the cameras a lot more to work with, and it shows; he and Amber are, without a doubt, the stars of this season.
  • Tall, Dark, and Handsome
  • Tall, Dark, and Snarky
  • Tears of Remorse: It's only at the very end in the final tribal council did Rob finally show some remorse for all his backstabbing and lies. Particularly, when Lex and Kathy speak to him, with Kathy commenting he was like a son to her, did he start to tear up, before actually crying during his final speech to the jury.
  • Took a Level in Badass: And how.
  • Took a Level in Jerkass: His game showed no regard for anyone else, aside from Amber.
  • Ungrateful Bastard: Towards Lex.
  • Wacky Marriage Proposal: He proposed to her at the reunion before the votes were read.
  • You Have Outlived Your Usefulness: To everyone but Amber.

Jury Members

    3rd. Jenna Lewis
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/s8_jenna_lewis.jpg
Age/ home/ season: 26/ Burbank, California/ 1. Borneo
Tribe: Saboga -> Chapera -> Mogo Mogo -> Chaboga Mogo

    4th. Rupert Boneham
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/s8_rupert_boneham.jpg
Age/ home/ season: 39/ Indianapolis, Indiana/ 7. Pearl Islands
Tribe: Saboga -> Chapera -> Mogo Mogo -> Chaboga Mogo

After All-Stars, Rupert competed on ''Heroes Vs. Villains'' and ''Blood vs. Water'' with his wife, Laura.

    5th. "Big" Tom Buchanan
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/s8_tom_buchanan.jpg
Age/ home/ season: 48/ Rich Valley, Virginia/ 3. Africa
Tribe: Chapera -> Mogo Mogo -> Chaboga Mogo

    6th. Shii Ann Huang
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/s8_shii_ann_huang.jpg
Age/ home/ season: 29/ New York, New York/ 5. Thailand
Tribe: Mogo Mogo -> Chapera -> Chaboga Mogo

  • All of the Other Reindeer: Post-merge.
  • Ascended Fangirl: Actually uses the term "Pagonged" on-camera to describe what happened to Mogo Mogo, and early on showed reluctance to vote out Richard Hatch "because he's the king" and it would be no fun to get rid of him early.
  • Foreshadowing: In her Final words, she warns the others about Amber and how she slips through the cracks.
  • Graceful Loser: One of the only ones on the jury.
  • Last of Her Kind: The last Mogo Mogo left.
  • My Greatest Second Chance: Doesn't win, but has a much stronger season than she did on Thailand, and even gets a car out of the whole thing. She also placed the highest of all the original Mogo-Mogo members, all of whom finished in the top three in their original seasons, including two past winners.
  • Only Known by Their Nickname: Subverted. Only she ever refers to herself by her nickname ("Shii-Devil").
  • Plucky Girl
  • Questionable Casting: In-universe. Mark Burnett once called her "the worst casting mistake of all time" for All-Stars. This is acknowledged when she's referred to in the F7 Reward challenge as "the least deserving to be an All-Star". However, a Reddit AMA revealed that she would later be given the opportunity to compete on Heroes Vs Villains and Blood Vs Water.
  • The Runt at the End: Shii Ann was the only castaway from Thailand
  • Surrounded by Idiots: She becomes furious when she discovers that no one left is remotely interested in recruiting her for a Shocking Elimination.
  • Spanner in the Works: Examining what happens next, it seems she was very close to becoming this. Had she beat out Tom in the final 6 immunity challenge (everyone else was disqualified), she wins immunity and potentially takes out Amber at the final 5 when she's a potential swing vote.
  • Tagalong Kid: To the Mogo Mogos. Ironically, she's the one who survives the longest.
  • Take That!: Literally screamed this to the old Chapera tribe after her immunity win. She also called the remaining seven Chaboga Mogos stupid people and stupid players for ignoring her.
  • Thanatos Gambit: Knowing she was on her way out at her last Tribal Council, she decided to try and stir things up a bit by declaring that her vote would be going to the player she thought was playing the strongest and would win the million if no one did anything about them. It went to Amber.
  • Token Minority: She was the first Asian castaway on the show, and one of two overall this season.
  • The Unfavorite: The woman is treated like dirt the moment she's the only member of Mogo-Mogo left after the merge; while past seasons have had the dominant tribe at least pretend to put up with the tribe that would be gone soon, it's obvious to Shii-Ann that she is absolutely not welcome, which makes her immunity win all the more satisfying (although even after she wins, they still don't even speak to her and act as though celebrating that she's won immunity is a bad thing and treat her as such.)

    7th. Alicia Calaway
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/s8_alicia_calaway.jpg
Age/ home/ season: 35/ New York, New York/ 2. The Australian Outback
Tribe: Chapera -> Mogo Mogo -> Chaboga Mogo

    8th. Kathleen "Kathy" Vavrick-O'Brien
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/s8_kathy_vavrick_obrien.jpg
Age/ home/ season: 48/ Burlington, Vermont/ 4. Marquesas
Tribe: Mogo Mogo -> Chapera -> Chaboga Mogo

  • The Cassandra: Sees exactly how the Chapera alliance is going to play out once she and Shii-Ann were gone and tries to get the people who were inevitably going to get voted out to do something about it. They didn't.
  • Crazy-Prepared: Before All Stars started, Kathy went to a psychologist to have them analyze some of the personality profiles of people she thought might be picked for this season in order to determine which players would be easiest to manipulate, hardest to trust, best to form an alliance with, etc.
  • Cool Old Lady
  • Determinator: How she won the first individual immunity challenge.
  • Graceful Loser: Zig-Zagged. She did vote for Boston Rob, who hurt her more. However, she liked him and disliked Amber for building on that final 6 deal Boston Rob offered to Lex. Or maybe she just preferred Rob because she liked him to begin with.
  • Irony: In her last voting confessional before being voted out, Kathy said that Amber had no chance of winning without changing her her game. Guess who won?
  • The Lancer: To the Mogo-Mogo alliance.
  • Lady Macbeth: Lex has repeatedly claimed over the years that getting rid of Jerri over Amber was really Kathy's idea.
  • Like a Son to Me: What she told Rob during her Jury speech after explaining how hurt she was by his betrayal.
Kathy: "I was crushed, Rob. You were like a son."
  • Never Mess with Granny: Won the first individual immunity challenge again. This particular immunity challenge was very difficult. To specify, Kathy had to hold her breath to outlast all but one woman. Then Kathy and her opponent, who would be Amber, had to release 10 buoys underwater.
  • Plucky Girl
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Takes time during the FTC to tell Rob how disappointed she is about his behaviour (see above).
  • Take a Third Option: During a challenge which involved knocking your opponent off a balance beam, she forgoes trying to fight Boston Rob and proceeds to just sit on the plank, thus lowering her center of gravity. Rob did, however, ultimately push her off.

9th. Alexis "Lex" van den Berghe
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/s8_lex_van_den_berghe.jpg
Age/ home/ season: 40/ Santa Cruz, California/ 3. Africa
Tribe: Mogo Mogo -> Chapera -> Chaboga Mogo

  • Expository Hair Style Change: Shaved his hair into a Mowhawk once he became part of the jury.
  • His Story Repeats Itself: As he did in Africa, Lex puts himself in a precarious position at the merge by voting out a member of his own tribe when he has the opposition dead to rights. And as in Africa, this decision puts him in hot water at the Final Nine. Unlike in Africa, he is unable to get out from under it.
  • Hypocrite: His statement to Rob during the final tribal council. Even before that, there was his remark as he cast the fatal vote for Colby:
You and I both know that this game has nothing to do with friendship.
  • Ironic Echo: Lex told Ethan that he was being voted out to save Jerri. Unsurprisingly, Ethan didn't take it well. Lex claimed it wasn't fun for him, either, and that it was Nothing Personal. He later did the same with Jerri, and she told him the consequences of doing so. Boston Rob did the same to him soon after. Needless to say, Lex was PISSED.
  • It Seemed Like a Good Idea at the Time: Keeping Amber over Jerri And suffice it to say, it wasn't.
  • It's All About Me: Lex’s gameplay is incredibly entitled and suggests that he thinks 'friendship' means the other person should happily do whatever is necessary for him to win the money - no matter the cost to themselves, their other relationships, or their integrity. He expects Ethan to be voted out gracefully when he’s no longer useful, for Jerri to take one for the team when a potentially better offer comes along, and for Boston Rob to take him with him to the end, regardless of his existing alliances. It’s not hard to assume that literally any situation where Lex didn’t end up in the final two would have resulted in the same oppugnant behavior from him at the final jury and during the reunion.
  • It's Personal: This best sums up why he's angry with Rob for breaking their deal.
  • Jerk Justifications: See Never My Fault.
  • Karmic Elimination: Lex had screwed three friends and allies. Once the tribes merged, Lex was immediately voted out by someone he considered a friend.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: See Karmic Elimination above.
  • Manipulative Bastard
  • Moral Myopia: It was okay for him to lie, cheat, and exploit friends, but if someone else did it to him, that person must pay.
  • Never My Fault: His elaborate explanations for why he can do the things he does (i.e. backstabbing Colby, Ethan, and Jerri), but crucifying Boston Rob for doing the same thing, come across as this.
  • Nothing Personal: When voting out Colby, Ethan, and Jerri.
  • Oh, Crap!: Lex has an EPIC Oh, Crap! face after Kathy refuses to give him her immunity necklace. The scene was actually just Manipulative Editing, because Lex said post-show they he didn't really want the necklace, but the transition from Kathy saying "Nope, I'm keeping it" to Lex's look of utter terror was just too priceless.
    • It may not just be editing... if one takes a close look at the scene one can see signs that it wasn't, including Big Tom's shadow as he gets up to vote being visible on Lex's Oh, Crap! face.
  • The Resenter: And how.
  • Smug Snake
  • Spiky Hair
  • Tall, Dark, and Snarky

Voted Out

    10th. Jerri Manthey
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/s8_jerri_manthey.jpg
Age/ home/ season: 33/ Los Angeles, California/ 2. The Australian Outback
Tribe: Saboga -> Mogo Mogo -> Chapera

Jerri would end up playing for an third time on Heroes vs. Villains

  • Graceful Loser: Even though she pleaded with Lex to keep her in the game, Jerri had no hard feelings when she was voted out. She simply smiled, hugged Amber, hugged and kissed Lex, and told the others it had been an honor playing with them.
  • It Has Been an Honor: Said this after being voted out.
  • Hypocritical Humor: Jerri and Shii Ann consider each other to be incompetent and lazy. Colby thinks they're just as bad as each other, and is happy to sit back and watch them argue as long as it keeps them focused on each other and not him. It doesn't keep him safe for long, though.
  • Jerk Ass Has A Point: During her argument with Rupert in Episode 3, she points out that his underground shelter is a horrible idea because one rainstorm is enough to destroy it and make life miserable. While Jerri wasn't the nicest person, she was proven right.
  • Ms. Fanservice: Lampshaded by Ethan in his first confessional.
  • My Greatest Second Chance: Subverted. In Australian Outback, she was the second person voted onto the jury whereas here, she was the last person eliminated before the merge (and last person not to make the jury). However, she did achieve one of her goals in the game by screwing Colby over.
    • Further played with in that, while she finished 8th in Australian Outback and 10th here, the fact that there were 18 contestants this season instead of 16 meant that she was the 9th person eliminated both times.
  • Plucky Girl: Managed to stick around for several episodes on the Mogo Mogo tribe, despite being an easy target due to her abrasive personality and recent addition to the tribe.
  • Red Baron: The Black Widow.

    11th. Ethan Zohn
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/s8_ethan_zohn.jpg
Age/ home/ season: 29/ New York, New York/ 3. Africa
Tribe: Saboga -> Mogo Mogo

After All-Stars, Ethan competed on The Amazing Race 19 with Jenna Morasca.

  • Butt-Monkey: Was essentially a dead man walking from day one on account of being a past winner
  • Character Development: In Africa Ethan was able to win mainly by being nice and forming strong bonds but in All Stars he had to play on the defensive the minute he set foot on the beach, which lead to him getting noticably more cynical with each episode. This development ended up making Ethan one of the only castaways to walk away from All Stars with a better reputation than before.
  • Deadpan Snarker: A contrast to his Africa self. The DVD Commentary Lampshades it by calling him "Ethan 2.0" whenever he makes a snarky remark.
  • Determinator: The guy is determined to keep on going, in spite of being a winner in a season where the theme was, basically, "the winners go first".
  • Good Is Not Soft: Despite being known as the first nice winner, Ethan willingly sows conflict in his tribe by going along with Rupert's shelter building idea (stating in confessionals that he knows it's horrible and wholly agrees with Jerri) so that everyone will be too mad at each other to target the guy who's already won.
  • Graceful Loser: In his final episode, Ethan expresses great frustration with his tribe for prioritizing Jerri above him, with particular ire for Lex due to the latter electing to send him home before Jerri and keeping him out of the loop regarding Colby's blindside. He spends his last day at camp vigorously making a case that Jerri doesn't deserve to make it further into the game than any of them, to no avail. Despite this, upon being voted out, he kisses both Kathy and Jerri on their heads and hugs Lex before bringing his torch to Jeff, ultimately wishing everyone well before walking out.
  • Jade-Colored Glasses: Donned these after Lex opted to keep Jerri over Colby.
  • Knight in Sour Armor: Becomes this more and more as the season goes on.
  • Mr. Fanservice
  • Nice Guy: Albeit a lot snarkier than his previous showing
  • The Quiet One
  • Really Gets Around: Three of the other contestants on the season are his exes
  • The Rival: To Boston Rob, given how the two are some of the biggest physical threats (plus the fact that Ethan used to date Amber).
  • Sudden Sequel Elimination Syndrome: Won Africa, only to be eliminated near the merge this time.
  • Tall, Dark, and Handsome

    12th. Colby Donaldson
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/s8_colby_donaldson.jpg
Age/ home/ season: 29/ Los Angeles, California/ 2. The Australian Outback
Tribe: Mogo Mogo

After All-Stars, Colby when on to compete on Heroes vs. Villains

  • Arch-Enemy: Jerri's. The look on his face when he realizes that she's also in the game is a sight to see.

    13th. Susan "Sue" Hawk (quit)
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/s8_susan_hawk.jpg
Age/ home/ season: 42/ Las Vegas, Nevada/ 1. Borneo
Tribe: Chapera

  • Vitriolic Best Buds: She had one with Richard up until the immunity challenge incident in Episode 5. The "best buds" is immediately out the window in the blink of an eye, leaving just the vitriol.

    14th. Richard Hatch
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/s8_richard_hatch.jpg
Age/ home/ season: 42/ Middletown, Rhode Island/ 1. Borneo
Tribe: Mogo Mogo

  • Abhorrent Admirer: To Colby. Prior to All-Stars Richard had made it publicly known that he had for the hots for Colby. There is also a rumor that one of his demands for All-Stars was to be on Colby's tribe. In the show itself Rich makes a point to always call Colby "honey" and Colby is clearly uncomfortable with the whole situation. Considering Rich spent the entire season trolling everyone it's likely he was enjoying it.
  • The Chessmaster: Subverted this season, where his strategy was basically to have no strategy.
  • The Chew Toy: To the Mogo Mogos, but especially Lex and Colby.
  • Flanderization: His nudism is shown on camera/brought by others far more than what was shown during Borneo, to the point where someone who only saw him during All Stars might think that he was just attention whoring. Also, his arrogance, all but completely justified in Borneo, reaches cartoonish levels this season. This is justified due to the fact that, without a doubt, he knew he had no chance of winning this season and was just along for the ride.
  • Shut Up, Hannibal!: Surprisingly enough, he did this to Lex and Kathy at the reunion, pointing out, in no uncertain terms, the hypocrisy of Lex's argument.
  • Small Name, Big Ego: Being Survivor's first winner, he had a big ego, but didn't last very long this time around.
  • Smug Snake: Wasn't as good this time due to everyone knowing who he was.
  • Sudden Sequel Elimination Syndrome: Won the inaugural season, only to be the first official boot of his tribe this time.
  • Teeny Weenie: According to the rest of Mogo Mogo.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: He has a playful bickering relationship with Sue until something unfortunate happens between them in Episode 5. This results directly in Susan acrimoniously quitting the game the next episode.

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/s8_rudy_boesch.jpg
Age/ home/ season: 75/ Virginia Beach, Virginia/ 1. Borneo
Tribe: Saboga

  • Determinator: He was, and remains, the oldest contestant to appear on Survivor, with no one eclipsing either of his appearances.
  • Game-Breaking Injury: He was already in a perilous position due to being 75 years old, but after he injured his ankle during a challenge he was considered to be too great a detriment to the tribe and was voted out.
  • Grumpy Old Man
  • Happily Married
  • Intergenerational Friendship: With Rupert.
  • Odd Couple: As in Borneo, Rudy's best friend on the tribe is the last person you'd expect. This time it's the tie-dyed bearded hippie-looking Rupert, who immediately bonds with Rudy over their shared sense of honor. Unfortunately this partnership ends before it really begins when Rudy is voted out (against Rupert's protests).
  • Squick: When he drinks the unboiled water, despite being told that it has parasites that will put him in a coma. His justification is even worse: In Vietnam he drank water from a reservoir that had half a dozen bodies floating in it at any time. If he could drink that and survive he's not scared of well water in Panama.
  • Shoot the Dog: His elimination is basically this.
  • Sudden Sequel Death Syndrome: Was the last jury member in Borneo, only to be the second one out this time.

    18th. Tina Wesson

Age/ home/ season: 42/ Knoxville, Tennessee/ 2. The Australian Outback
Tribe: Saboga
After All-Stars, Tina competed on ''Blood Vs. Water'' with her Daughter, Katie Collins
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: In the DVD commentary, she said the following about Jerri when Jerri was having a legitimate breakdown in Rupert's shelter. Even Jenna Morasca and Boston Rob were stunned speechless.
Tina: "Wow, look at how the rain brings out all the impurities and zits in Jerri's face."
  • Character Filibuster: Apparently, she debated for hours (which we only got to see a very small fraction of) at tribal council on why Jenna should leave first, and why she and Ethan shouldn't be targeted for being previous winners. Needless to say, this fell on deaf ears.
