Battleships (BB)/Aviation Battleships (BBV)

The most powerful of the so-called "surface ships", Battleships have the highest Health, Attack and Armor values in the game, and can equip the largest caliber guns available. In return for this however they are incapable of launching torpedos, and are especially vulnerable to dive bombers and — barring Aviation Battleships, who can launch seaplane bombers and autogyros to counterattack — submarine attacks. They also have the largest Maintenance costs in the game, and take ungodly amounts of time to repair if their Health dips to critical levels.

  • Mighty Glacier: Every Japanese battleship listed have an indicated speed of "Slow". Well, except the Kongou sisters.note
  • Theme Naming: All but the Kongou-classnote  and Fusounote  are named after ancient Japanese provinces.

     The Kongou-Class
  • Bunny-Ears Lawyer: Surprisingly enough in the anime, while being a veritable bunch of goofballs on-land, the four sisters show themselves to be quite deadly when on a mission. This also applies to their intellect and emotional intelligence, particularly for Kongou and Kirishima. Kirishima is the brains of the group, while Kongou, despite being total utter wacky Cloudcuckoolander, is actually spot on when she says in Episode 9 that the admiral must have had a good reason for recalling Fubuki back to the Naval District. Turns out that Fubuki was returning to get a major remodel.
  • Cloudcuckoolander: In the anime. The four sisters are... quirky, to say the least. Even Kirishima isn't free from this. As a result, Fubuki's image of a "cool" Kongou gets completely shattered when she learns the truth.
  • Incoming Ham: In the anime. All of them are willing to agree with their older sister Kongou on trying to find Shimakaze by having a concert, and they play this for all it's worth in their introductions.
  • Infinity -1 Sword: See Nagato-class below, Kongou-class are really easy to get for medium-or-above Admirals, and the range drawback doesn't apply since long caliber guns are abundant. Together with some map's discrimination against Slow ships, the Kongou Fast Battleships are core of the fleet for most Admirals. However, obtaining both Nagato sisters is still highly desirable, due to unlocking some of the tasks that gives you strong items that are uncraftable and some Special Event maps (or task) have discrimination against Fast ships. The Nagato and Yamato-class also fare better in ultra-hard maps like 5-5 and some Event maps.
  • Lightning Bruisers:
    • As their class namesake would implynote , they are the only Japanese battleships with a listed speed of Fast. Justified in that they are converted from battlecruisers, which can move faster than a battleship would.
    • Their Kai 2 forms, when maximized, make them practically as powerful as the Nagato-class, while still maintaining their "Fast" speed.
  • Miko: In theme only, unfortunately, and they don't perform anything remotely miko-like.
  • Necessary Drawback:
    • In return for their high speed and firepower, they start with only 3 slots before their remodelnote , and they cannot equip medium caliber guns. Not much of an issue for mid-level or above admirals, but lower-level admirals will have a significantly harder time increasing their firepower apart from sticking more main guns.
    • While they are capable of equipping the main guns up to 46cm caliber used on the Yamato-class battleships, the introduction of the overweight penalty hits them harder than other battleships as they suffers accuracy penalty when any guns of 41cm caliber or higher was equipped on them, so equipping those guns means a tradeoff between accuracy and power for them, especially in Combined Fleet.
  • Older Than They Look: They are the second oldest ships in the entire IJN fleet available in the game after the introduction of repair-ship Asahi, although this isn't usually referenced in both official and fan works. Historic note
  • Sarashi: Revealed to wear one when badly damaged. For some reason, Kirishima lacks it (at least until her Kai 2 form).
  • Took a Level in Badass:
    • They all got their second remodels which increases their overall stats to rival the Nagato-class (at least before their remodel). Kongou especially gets a significant boost in Line of Sight (from 15 to 41). Hiei gets the most HP and Armor value. Haruna, in exchange for slightly lower HP and firepower value than others, has higher AA and luck. Kirishima gets slight loss in evasion in exchange for having the most firepower.
    • Later, they're scheduled to get yet another remodel to keep up with the Power Creep caused by the additions of more foreign battleships and second remodels. Kongou in particular gets a Type-C remodel, which trades off some of her armor for the ability to equip seaplane fighters and launch torpedoes.

"It's the British-born returnee, Kongou -dess! Nice to meet you!"

Kongou (literally "Adamantine/Indestructible") is the personification of the Japanese battleship Kongou. She has peculiar speech habits which include using random English words. She is also an avid drinker of black tea and is very clingy towards the Admiral.

While appearing much earlier in the anime, Kongou (and her sisters) only come into focus in episode 4, with Kongou herself joining Mobile Unit Five as the squadron's battleship in the wake of the fleet reorganization in episode 5. Here she retains her cheerful personality and her sisters look up to her. She is also very open about her feelings towards the Admiral, often daydreaming about him.
  • Ass-Kicking Pose: See her picture over there? She often theatrically sweeps her hand to strike that pose when she starts her shelling.
  • Boisterous Bruiser: Loud, excitable, and hits like a freight train.
  • Breakout Character: It's no exaggeration that Kongou has become one of the most recognizable shipgirls in the game, to the point that many people at least a bit familiar with the game know of Kongou. This has also resulted in her and her sisters receiving plenty of spotlight, including an important role in the animated adaptations.
  • Brits Love Tea: Her being built in England has made her really appreciate tea.
(One of her Secretary lines) "I'd love a cuppa~"
  • Character Catchphrase: "Burning LOVE!", which is also her attack call.
  • Clingy Jealous Girl: Very clingy towards the Admiral.
Kongou: Even though I told you to not look away! Admiral, just what are you doing -dess!?
  • Cool Big Sis:
    • More noticeable in the anime, as she's usually the one Fubuki turns to whenever she has problems. She also acts as this towards other shipgirls.
    • The game also implies she's like this for the rest of her sisters, though Hiei over-exaggerates this.
  • Does This Remind You of Anything?:
    • Her unique line as your secretary, post-marriage:
Kongou: HEY! Admiral~ Even though you're always doing your best, I want you to not push yourself so hard~!
    • Episode 9 of the anime has her daydreaming about the Admiral, which has her dialogue counting as this:
Kongou: (Giggling while squirming all over the bed) Admiral... My ears, they're ticklish...
  • Genki Girl: While she can be thoughtful and tranquil, 90% of the time she acts as if her fuel was replaced with sugar.
  • Gratuitous English: A bad habit she picked up in England and shows up in nearly every single one of her lines.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: When showing the Admiral the Player Score.
Kongou: Admiral! You've got mail~! Love letters are unacceptable!
  • Idiot Hair: Has a relatively large one behind her radar headband.
  • Incoming Ham: Prone to acting like this in most of the adaptations. Particularly in the anime when she screams and glomps Ooyodo, mistaking her for the Admiral.
Kongou: Aaaaad-miiiii-raaaaal~! Ehee~! Burning... LOVE! LOVE! LOVE~! (glomps Ooyodo)
  • Invincible Hero: Invoked with her name and downplayed in the anime and movie, as she doesn't get any moderate to heavy damage while fighting against Abyssals. The game and her historical counterpart averts this, however.
  • Large Ham: Has a really booming voice and bubbly personality, not to mention the Hot-Blooded screams filled with Gratuitous English.
Kongou: YES! (random door slams open) I just finished baking the scones -DESS!
  • The Nicknamer: In the anime, Kongou give nicknames to destroyers she meets. Ooyodo becomes "Yodo", Fubuki becomes "Bucky", Shimikaze is "Zekamashi", Akatsuki is "Zuki", and she combines Ikazuchi and Inazuma into "Raiden".
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business:
    • The movie has her drop a lot of her hammy tendencies, showing that she can be quite serious.
    • In the anime, at one point, when Kongou is comforting Fubuki and Hiei reacts dramatically, Kongou calmly shushes Hiei so as not to kill the mood.
      Kongou: Shh! Quiet, please~
  • Precision F-Strike:
    • If heavily damaged.
Kongou: Shit! The precious equipment I got from the Admiral!
    • Happens again in the anime, this time for comedic effect.
Nagato: Unfortunately, the Admiral is not here at the present moment.
Kongou: Shit... But I won't lose next time. The one who'll catch the Admiral's heart is me -dess!
    • The dub version of Episode 5 has her uttering a British profanity after failing to lead Mobile Unit Five.
Kongou: Bollocks! That was a disaster...
  • Spared by the Adaptation: According to Isokaze in Let's Meet at Sea, Kongou had a close call from an Abyssal submarine attack (though she sustained moderate damage in the process) and made the wise decision of retreating to Taiwan instead of heading straight to Kure. Considering the fact that a submarine from the US sank her historical counterpart and retirement by Career-Ending Injury is basically a metaphoric stand-in for warships sinking in real life, Kongou is one of the few known Ship Girls who managed to avoid this, with the other being Mogami.
  • Team Chef: In Someday as the Seas Turn Calm, she's the one who makes the (English) food for her sisters. However, her food is well-liked by everyone.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Black tea, of course!
  • Verbal Tic: Tends to add quite some emphasis to "dess" (デース dēsu), her katakana variant of "desu", whenever she finishes a sentence.

"I'm Hiei, Big sister Kongou's sister. I'm looking forward to gaining experience and getting closer to my sister's brilliance."

Hiei is the personification of the Japanese battleship Hiei. She idealizes her big sister Kongou and wants to be as strong as her.
  • Big Sister Worship: For Kongou.
  • Eye Scream: Narrowly averted this in the movie when an Abyssal shot struck her in the head.
  • Green-Eyed Monster:
    • One of her lines implies that she knows that Kongou has feelings for the Admiral.
Hiei: "I won't lose to the Chief, neither in love or in battle!"
    • However, her second remodel lines indicates she doesn't really dislike the Admiral and appreciates his/her attention as much as her sister does. She even sulks when the Admiral ran away from eating her curry in one of these.
  • Important Haircut: For her Kai Ni remodel.
  • Lethal Chef:
    • Implied by her hourly notification lines. She tries to prepare some curry for the Admiral, and when she asks how it is, the Admiral runs away.
    • The Kongou-class even get an entire Drama CD dedicated to their attempt to get her curry to at least edible levels after the first batch nearly sent them into shock and knocked out the Admiral.
    • Episode 6 of the anime sees her... erm, contribution to the curry she and Kongou are making mosaic censored out. When this was added to the curry base Kongou made, it turned it purple. Their taste test ended with their faces being turned every color of the rainbow, ultimately knocking them both out.
    • Atlanta actually likes her curry, but it was revealed that she was cooking with Kongou's recipe.
  • Lightning Bruiser: Similar to Kongou, especially at her 2nd upgrade. Relative to the others, she is the sister with marginally better durability.
  • Mad Libs Catchphrase: Loves doing things with all of her spirit!
  • Verbal Tic: "HIEEEEEEEEEE—!", an obvious pun to her name, which she usually screams when she is especially distressed.

"Fast battleship, Haruna, was appointed. You're the Admiral, correct? Please take care of me."

Haruna is the personification of the Japanese battleship Haruna. A polite, humble girl.
  • Art Evolution: Not her, but her backpack in the anime: While the game has her cannon backpack designed like Kongou's, the anime changed it in favor of the design used on Hiei's and Kirishima's. This change in design allows the differentiation between Kongou and her sisters.Explanation
  • Born Lucky: Technically luckier than the her sister ships (she has an above-average Luck header post-second Remodel), but this is for a completely different reason.Explanation
  • Character Catchphrase: "Haruna is alright" ("Haruna wa daijoubu desu"). It gets so bad, in the Drama CD's roll call she nearly introduces herself as Battleship Daijoubu.
  • Declaration of Protection: As shown in her marriage line.
Haruna: "What is it... this desire to protect...is overflowing. My comrades... and the Admiral... you too..."
  • Face Death with Dignity: If she gets sunk.
Haruna: If this is my fate...I'll accept it. I'm sorry...
  • Hotter and Sexier: Downplayed with her Normal Swimsuit CG, Played straight with the Damaged CG version.
  • Humble Hero: She has a modest, humble personality.
Haruna: "I'm just doing what is natural. To give special assessment, it will be too good for Haruna."
  • Informed Attribute: According to Kirishima, Haruna is as smart as her.
  • Irony: Her historical counterpart was the first among her sisters to have her modernization to fast battleship spec complete. In-game, she is the last among her sisters, in both date of implementation and level requirement, to receive her Kai 2 remodel.
  • Lightning Bruiser: Like her sisters, but with a bit more Lightning than Bruiser. She traded Durability and Firepower for Evasion and enhanced Anti-Air. As she also remodels later than her sisters (at Lv. 80), she sports more gear than the others.
  • Living Emotional Crutch: By the time Let's Meet at Sea took place, Kongou is the only family she has left. This is best shown in Episode 7, where she's seen feeling depressed and worrying for her sister until Tone brings her the good news.
  • Shrinking Violet: In fanworks, exaggerating her humble personality.
  • Third-Person Person: The only one among the sisters to do so, which is meant to reflect her humble nature.
  • Throw the Dog a Bone: When she's told by Tone that Kongou got out of the Abyssal submarine attack with Urakaze's help and retreated to Taiwan for repairs in Let's Meets at Sea, she smiled in relief, a far cry from her historical counterpart being the last Kongou-class battleship prior to the Kure seige.

"Is the microphone's volume good? Check, 1,2... Okay. How do you do, I'm Kirishima."

Kirishima (literally "Fog Island") is the personification of the Japanese battleship Kirishima. A dutiful and brainy girl who sees Haruna as her rival.
  • Blind Without 'Em: As said in her hourly line.
Kirishima: "Commander! If you take my glasses, I can't fight!"
  • Character Catchphrase: "Mic check...1, 2, 1, 2..." Doubles as her Character Tic.
  • The Glasses Come Off: In the anime, Kirishima takes them off before turning around and mowing down a small group of Abyssal ships. Even her sisters are surprised by it!
  • If My Calculations Are Correct: Prone to this in many of her lines, especially in her marriage line.
Kirishima: "According to my calculations, after the battle is over, the Commander and I probably, possibly, maybe... No.. it's nothing!"
  • Lemony Narrator: Her role in Episode 6 of the anime is to ham up the curry competition to surreal levels, if that was even possible. Naka ends up lampshading this.
  • Lightning Bruiser: Similar to her sisters but with the extra perk of her Kai 2 having superior firepower to the Nagato-class in exchange for a small amount of durability. Fanartists have taken this to manly levels of awesome.note
  • Not So Above It All: Constantly trying to rein in her more intense older sisters, Kongou and Hiei, especially when Hiei starts copying Kongou's "BURNING LOVE" catchphrase, only to do the exact same thing when she thinks no one is looking (in the 4koma).
  • Only Sane Man: In fanworks, compared to the Hot-Blooded Kongou and Hiei.
  • Percussive Maintenance: Her suggestion for how South Dakota should handle her electrical fault- that being the power failure that allowed Kirishima to attack South Dakota without the USN ship being able to retaliate during the naval battle of Guadalcanal.
  • The Rival: To Haruna, who either doesn't notice or doesn't care.
    • Fanartists portray her as one to Re-class due to both her Kai Ni and Re-class, whose stats and whose map was based on the Second Battle of Guadalcanal, respectively, coming out at the same time in-game.
  • Specs of Awesome: She's the lone glasses girl of the four and is often believed to be the strongest out of them.
  • Statuesque Stunner: Her second remodel art makes her look gigantic compared to her sisters. Whether that's intentional or not is still up for debate.
  • Stop Poking Me!: Takes it a little more literally than most.
Kirishima: "You know, what's with your constant poking? Is it a new command?"
  • Unknown Rival: Kirishima's library line says she won't lose to Haruna.note  None of Haruna's lines acknowledge this rivalry.

     The Fusou-Class
  • The Battlestar: Historically they were planned to become Aviation Battleships but they sank before it could come to be. In-game, however, they can become one after their first remodel.
  • Born Unlucky: They have some of the lowest base Luck scores in the game, a reference to both the constant string of issues the real-life ships had, as well as their disastrous sortie during the Battle of Surigao Strait. Yamashiro, however, makes a bigger deal of it.
    Yamashiro: Such misfortune...
    • For comparison, the two have the same base luck as Aquila, a ship that never finished construction.
    • The two also make the "Unlucky Tea Ceremonies" group in the 4koma which consists of some unlucky ships including themselves, Mutsu, Taihou and Shoukaku.
  • Career-Ending Injury: Both Fusou and Yamashiro barely made it out of the Surigao Strait alive in Let's Meet at Sea but they're so badly injured to the point of being unable to fight and were forced to retire. That said, retiring from Ship Girl duty is a good thing because they would finally spend the rest of their lives being together without worrying for each other's safety and Yamashiro gave Shigure a parting gift before they left the base.
  • Discard and Draw: Their remodel converts them into Aviation Battleships, which in return for a reduction in their Firepower score, increases all their other stats and gives them the ability to launch Anti-Submarine floatplanes, giving them a modest chance to hurt submarines back. This trait is shared with the Ise-class battleships.
  • The Eeyore: These two are... not exactly positive people.
  • Historical In-Joke: The actual Fusou and Yamashiro were never remodeled into Aviation Battleships. They were planned for the conversion but it never went on. Their remodel represents what if they were actually converted. Their second remodel, however, is completely hypothetical, with their use of Prototype 41cm Triple Gun Mount among other things.
  • Holiday Mode: Both ships get Swimsuits as part of the July 2016 update.
  • Miko: Much like the Kongou-class, only in terms of aesthetics.
  • Necessary Drawback: Their second remodel requires the use of blueprints, in exchange for unique equipment like the aforementioned experimental 41cm Triple Gun Mounts.
  • Running Gag: The class's oversized pagoda mast has been transformed into an equally oversized hair decoration. It becomes a running gag in the 4koma as the pagoda is replaced with different hair ornaments for the situation: a Christmas tree, a paper lantern for Hanami, mini-Sakura trees for the Hina Matsuri episode, and a small basket for the sports festival. It's also a tourist attraction for the foreign ship girls in the 4koma as well.
  • Shields Are Useless: For defense, one assumes. However, as they represent flightdecks post-remodeling, they're Not Completely Useless, as they're used to launch seaplane scouts and torpedo planes.
  • Took a Level in Badass: Their second remodels. Outside of a general slight buff, their firepower have been increased tremendously to be on par with Nagato and their seaplane slot counts have been rearranged to be concentrated in their last slot. However, their remodeling necessitates level 80 and a blueprint, which means they are only available for high level admirals. The two of them have minute differences, however. Fusou has better Firepower and AA, Yamashiro has better Luck and Armor. They also come with a Martial Arts Headband.

"Super-Dreadnought/Battleship Fusou-class, the elder Fusou. Please take care of me along with my sister Yamashiro."

Fusou (an ancient Chinese name for "Japan", also one of many Chinese names for a Chinese Hibiscus) is the personification of the Japanese battleship Fusou. She is very attached to her little sister Yamashiro and vice-versa and often sulks about being Born Unlucky.
  • Ass-Kicking Pose: Her pose as left when heavily damaged, plus with attractiveness.
  • Cannot Spit It Out: To the Admiral after remodelling to Kai-Ni.
Fusou: Admiral, why is the sky so blue I wonder... My heart is also, towards the Admiral.... I-It's nothing! Nothing at all. I'm sorry...
  • Commonality Connection: Invokes this in the 4-koma, where she's particularly happy about meeting other unlucky ships like her.
  • Character Development: After being remodeled in her Kai-Ni form, she is a bit less sulky than before and warms up to the Admiral.
  • Cool Big Sis: Her lines show that she likes to look after Yamashiro. If she gets modernized, she asks the Admiral to do the same for Yamashiro as well.
Fusou: Please modernize my sister Yamashiro as well.
  • Flanderization: In fanon she is portrayed as being resentful and more sulky than she already is.
  • Freeze-Frame Bonus: In Let's Meet at Sea episode 4, eagle-eyed viewers will notice that Fusou has a ring when she touches the Admiral's face, implying that she's the one he chose to marry in the anime.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: Towards Ise and Hyuuga in-game. Towards every ship better than her in the 4-koma (which includes Yamashiro at some point). Justified, since she was supposed to be the flagship of the IJN, and therefore the best.
  • Minor Injury Overreaction: When she takes light damage, she screams bloody murder. In contrast, her delivery of her moderate damage line is a lot more subdued.
  • The Rival:
    • Sees Ise and Hyuuga as this. This derives from the real-life fact that the Ise-class was initially designed as a member of the Fusou-class but later revised heavily from the faulty design of the Fusou-class.
Fusou: I just don't wanna lose out to Ise and Hyuuga!
    • Taken to its logical conclusion in the 4koma where she keeps getting punted out in favor of the better ships, and always saying in response she "doesn't want to lose to [insert Long List here]". Even (at one point) Yamashiro herself.
  • When She Smiles: Inverted. The small smile she has in base and Kai form disappears to be replaced by a thin-lipped frown in Kai Ni.

"Of the Fusou-class battleship sisters, I am the younger sister, Yamashiro. Umm, have you seen my big sister Fusou...?"

Yamashiro (literally "Mountain Castle") is the personification of the Japanese battleship Yamashiro. She is very attached to her big sister Fusou but dismissive of everyone else. Is often seen complaining about being Born Unlucky.
  • All of the Other Reindeer: Claims that other ships talk things behind her back for being a faulty ship. She's just paranoid about it, though.
  • Arc Hero: Of the Surigao Strait arc in Let's Meet at Sea.
  • Big Sister Worship: While at least other sisters with Big Sister Worship also care for the Admiral as well or tell him that If It's You, It's Okay, Yamashiro talks and refers to Fusou in almost all her lines (and when she doesn't, she sulks about being Born Unlucky).Historical reason
  • Character Development: If the Admiral marries her, she awkwardly tries to give her thanks for taking care of her. Even though in the Seasonal lines, she's still cold towards the Admiral, considering that she's completely dismissive of the other shipgirls (such as blatantly ignoring Zuikaku's complains about the turkey on Christmas), that's an improvement.
  • Hidden Depths: While she's usually meek, when leading battle she's surprisingly fierce, powerful, and full of authority not unlike Nagato. Might be an allusion to her service as the Nishimura Fleet flagship.
  • Odd Friendship: She's friends with Heywood L. Edwards, a destroyer who attempted to torpedo her at Surigao Strait. Yamashiro brings bottles of sake for her and Heywood to share.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: For the 2017 Fall event, she received new event-exclusive voice lines where, unlike the rest of the girls with seasonal lines, she becomes more hotblooded and angry during combat. Justified since historically, the real-life Yamashiro attempted to retaliate by firing at every direction as the situation worsened back in the Battle of Surigao Strait; her last moments was the basis for the 2017 Fall Event.
Yamashiro: GET OUT OF MY WAY!!!
  • Prone to Tears: She always talks like she is on the verge of tears, except when referring to Fusou.
  • Single-Target Sexuality:
    • Yamashiro has the biggest sister-complex in the game and is completely Fusou-sexual. She even politely rejects the Admiral in her marriage line.
Yamashiro: T-Thank you...but my heart will always belong to big sister Fusou...I'm sorry.
    • However, her secretary lines in her Kai-ni form imply that she likes the Admiral as much as Fusou...because she sees the Admiral as being like Fusou.
  • Together in Death: If she gets sunk.
Yamashiro: Big sister Fusou... I'll be with you to the other side...
  • "Well Done, Son" Guy: She always seeks Fusou's approval.
  • When She Smiles: Her face is usually in a thin-lipped or scowling expression, but in Kancolle Kai and Arcade games where her model is more expressive, her closed-eyes-open-mouthed smile is noted by fans as the most adorable she could possibly look.
  • Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: Yamashiro dislikes night battles, since her Real Life counterpart was sunk in a night battle at Surigao Strait.

     The Ise-Class

  • Ascended Extra: The 4koma at least made the two more prominent, right after Fubuki and her sisters, as the trainers of the young destroyers. Then in Kancolle Arcade, they become the official mascots.
  • The Battlestar: The Trope Codifier for the IJN, as they historically were remodeled into aviation battleships. They also have the highest amount of plane slots amongst all surface combatant ships, surpassed only by actual aircraft carriers.
    • Eventually, the class' second remodel turns the both of them into fully featured battleship/aircraft carrier hybrids, pushing them even further into this territory.
  • Born Lucky: Both of them have decent Luck scores. Similar to Aoba, they survived from beginning of the war until the bombing of Kure slightly more than one week before the atomic bombing of Hiroshima.
  • Bow and Sword in Accord: They have both a bow and a sword with their Kai Ni, which can symbolize their usage of carrier planes and battleship guns respectively. Ise begins by using her bow and finishes (in her damaged pose) with her sword while Hyuuga is the inverse.
  • Discard and Draw: Like the Fusou-class, they becomes Aviation Battleships upon remodel, causing a significant drop in Firepower in exchange for the higher evasion and ability to launch seaplane bombers.
  • Divergent Character Evolution: With their second remodels, Ise and Hyuuga take two different roles by default with their stock equipment and stats. Ise is more straightfoward, being focused on attack and AA and favors airplanes while Hyuuga has an ASW and seaplane focus (with a ASW stat that not only exists but is also very good) with her autogyros, helicopters like the Sikorsky H-5, and her beloved Zuiuns. This is also represented with their flight decks: Ise has a basic flight deck while Hyuuga has additional lines painted on it for helicopters (a nod to the JMSDF's JS Hyuuga, DDH-181) and an additional catapult for seaplanes.
  • Jack of All Trades: Both Ise Kai Ni and Hyuuga Kai Ni are fully functional battleship/carrier hybrids that retains the ability to use floatplanes, giving them extreme versatility in how you can configure their equipments to fit a role.
  • Martial Arts Headband: Both sports one in their Kai Ni remodel.
  • Necessary Drawback: While their second remodel turns them into functional Aircraft Carrier/Battleship hybrids, what they gain in sheer versatility doesn't translate into being particularly good battleships (Ise's Max Firepower is only slightly buffed while Hyuuga's is actually nerfed a tiny bit.) or particularly good carriers (Their carrying level is comparable to a CVL with 57 and 50 respectively). Moreover, two of their 5 slots (the second ones since Musashi's Kai-2 remodel) are exclusively reserved for aircraft (particularly fighters, dive bombers, and seaplanes.) Also, as expected of such a big overhaul, this remodel is very expansive in materials and things like blueprints and such. Their stats should synergize strongly with both functions, though.
  • Ornamental Weapon: Ise and Hyuuga carry katanas around but considering the sheer size of their equipment they probably can't even draw them. The only time we see it being used is in their Kai Ni remodels.

"Super-dreadnought, first of the Ise-class, Ise. Setting off!"

Ise is the personification of the Japanese battleship Ise.
  • Boisterous Bruiser: More excitable and enthusiastic than her sister.
  • Cloudcuckoolander: In the 4koma.
  • Face Death with Dignity: If she gets sunk.
Ise: This is it, huh... Hyuuga, I'm going ahead...
  • Foolish Sibling, Responsible Sibling: Ise is the foolish one in the 4-koma.
  • Historical In-Joke: Her talk about the 5th turret (in her wedding line, of all places) is a reference to her class' design being a modified version of Fusou's (including the positioning of the turrets) and how Hyuuga lost her 5th turret and it got changed with a flight deck (as seen in their BBV art).
  • Necessary Drawback: Possesses the highest Evasion stat of any battleship not possessing a secondary remodel. In exchange for this, however, she (and by extension her sister Hyuuga) has comparatively lower Firepower and Armor values. What's more, she's a Gold-rarity ship, meaning unless one is terribly lucky in construction, a player will maybe get her in World 2 at earliest.
  • Shields Are Useless: Much like the Fusou sisters, the "shield" in question is just the flight deck her seaplanes take off on.
  • The Slacker: An instructor for the new, young destroyers but will use any excuse to ditch work and even when she does, she only puts the minimum amount of effort into her lessons, though Yamato noted that said personality makes Ise able to deal with destroyers easier than someone like herself.
  • Tomboyish Ponytail: Has one hanging at the back of her head, to distinguish her from her younger sister.

"You're the Admiral? I see. Anyway. Second ship of the Ise-class, Hyuuga. Remember me, if you would."

Hyuuga (literally "Towards the Sun") is the personification of the Japanese battleship Hyuuga.
  • Aloof Big Sister: Inverted, she's the aloof younger sister for Ise.
  • Cloudcuckoolander's Minder: For Ise in the 4koma.
  • Comically Serious: She's almost always sound deadpan, even when fangirling about her Zuiun. Or (in the 4koma) Mogami.
  • Foolish Sibling, Responsible Sibling: Hyuuga is the responsible one in the 4-koma.
  • Hard-Drinking Party Girl: Surprisingly, as shown in her marriage line:
Hyuuga: "Aviation Battleship... got a nice ring to it, yeah? You get it, right? Alright... let's drink! We're not going back 'till morning!"
  • Historical In-Joke: Just like Ise, she makes references to her broken 5th turret.
  • Necessary Drawback: See Ise's entry.
    • With her second remodel, she is one of only three battleships with an ASW stat and a very powerful one at that* (if considered a carrier, she would only be slightly weaker than Taiyou K2 and Shin'you K2 in ASW). To compensate, she has a slightly weaker stat spread and less plane slots than her elder sister.
  • Running Gag: As mentioned in the Comically Serious entry above, her occasional mention of the Zuiun. She even gives the Admiral one in her 2015 Valentine's Day line (presumably a chocolate scale model):
Hyuuga: Oh, yeah, it's that thing called Valentine's, isn't it? Alright then, I'll give you a special Zuiun. Here.
  • Shields Are Useless: Demonstrated by Kaga of all people, in the 4-koma. (The situation involved Akagi and the incoming Maikaze, It Makes Sense in Context.)
Hyuuga: Flight decks don't work as shields!

     The Nagato-Class
  • Infinity -1 Sword: The two sisters are considered this, due to how comparatively easier the two are to get compared to the Yamato-class; both Yamato and Musashi are available for building only through a significant investment in resources. And while Nagato and Mutsu are also available through LSC, one can use the default LSC recipe and still have a good chance of getting them, something that's impossible to do for Yamato. In return for this (relative) ease in acquiring them, an admiral is treated to a ship class that's second only to the Yamato-class in Firepower, Anti-Air, and Armor.
    • However, getting Nagato is anything but easy for medium-experienced players, who may get ship No.2~115 but not Nagato as No.1. While Mutsu is easy to get once you finish the 5-3 nightmare and dive into 5-4 repeatedly for easy EXP, Nagato is rare everywhere. Any map that drops her (5-4 not among them) either have random dead ends(2-4, 3-2, 3-3, 3-4, 4-4) and/or outright hard (all of those except 3-3, plus 6-2 which do have a definite route to bossnote ). Unlucky players also won't get her through Normal construction (2% chance) or LSC (about 5% chance) for a while.
    • Power Creep: As of June 2015, performance-wise Nagato-class is very close to Kongou-, Fusou-, Bismarck- and Littorio-classes' final remodels. Nagato still holds advantage in survivability, low remodel level and the fact that she doesn't need blueprints to remodel (until her second remodel came along). Also, Bismarck is available only through LSC, while the Littorio-class was only obtainable through Spring 2015 event.
  • Signature Headgear: Their hair decs seemingly refering to the radar spires beside their real-life counterparts' command towers. Nagato's has hers mounted behind her head, while Mutsu's has hers on top (see Animal Motifs on her entry for further interpretation). As it turns out, horned headgear is one of two common denominators of the Big Seven, the other being a Limit Break (which Nagato and Mutsu only obtain upon their second remodels, see Nelson and Colorado).

"I am Battleship Nagato, pleased to meet you. Leave the enemy battleships to me."

Nagato (literally "Long Gate") is the personification of the Japanese battleship Nagato. Despite being one of the IJN's most well-known capital ships, her character gives off the aura of a Sugar-and-Ice Personality.

Nagato is the secretary (or Flagship) of the Admiral in the anime, which puts her in overall command of the naval base by proxy.
  • Adaptational Jerkass: Downplayed. In the games, Nagato's quite reserved, but wasn't too detached and could be quite open. In the anime, she is far more aloof, short-tempered and impatient, not to mention jealous of Fubuki due to the Admiral placing a lot of expectancy on the young shipgirl compared to his more experienced Secretary. One could imply this was a way to work her Overshadowed by Awesome side of hers into her personality.
  • Aloof Dark-Haired Girl: Especially prominent in the anime, being quite a deviation from her game's counterpart; while she was generally reserved, she can be quite open.
  • Alternate Character Reading: "Nagamon" is the alternate reading of her name and it is commonly used by the fandom whenever she does something completely wacky (or perverted).
  • Amazonian Beauty: She has a notably muscular frame, especially when compared to a softer looking Mutsu, but she neither looks androgynous or tomboyish. It's more apparent in her second remodel.
  • Badass Longcoat: Wears one after her second revision which keeps the exposed midriff, although to a lesser extent than before.
  • Cuteness Proximity: More often than not, a good chunk of the fandom portray her with this. This art by her official illustrator for one magazine cover seems to back this up. During these cases, she's given a personality akin to Sakaki from Azumanga Daioh, complete with keeping a telephoto camera on hand to capture said cuteness for posterity. It's partially canonized in the anime, where Nagato displays a completely goofy and cutesy side when a squirrel appears in the Truk base's bath.
  • Does Not Know Her Own Strength: Less frequently depicted by fandom compared to the Cuteness Proximity example, with most depictions having her accidentally break random things due to her Super-Strength (the justification for that strength being that she is one of the most powerful battleships both in Real Life and in-game). Still, the fandom depict her using that power to break things intentionally.
  • Fanservice Pack: A downplayed example as while she's curvier than her base art, the main focus of her second remodel art is her badass traits and the Art Evolution since her base art.
  • Green-Eyed Monster:
    • While the game doesn't show this at all, the official 4-koma portrays her like this. Despite Nagato being the best battleship in the game after Yamato and her supposedly being one of the Big 7, she finds her popularity easily overshadowed by Yamato's, even with Yamato's whole existence being kept secret before.
Nagato: Even though I was the national idol at the time, all the later anime and movies are named after you instead!
    • In episode 10 of the first anime, she dislikes how, despite being the Admiral's flagship, he actually expects more from Fubuki. Mutsu bluntly says Nagato is jealous of Fubuki.
  • Good is Not Nice: She's this in the anime. While not outright mean, as the Secretary, Nagato is obviously not used to dealing with the other shipgirls antics, less so compared to her sister Mutsu, who's far more lax. Case in point, after Kongou's big entrance and attempt to hug the Admiral (instead hugging Ooyodo), she's at pains when trying to hold on her anger. Even Takao and Atago, who are adults as Nagato, are far closer to the younger shipgirls than her! Maybe the Admiral's huge expectancy of Fubuki has something to do with it...?
  • Hopeless Suitor: It's implied in the anime that she has feelings for the Admiral, who seems to value Fubuki more.
  • Historical In-Joke: Her ability to carry Landing Crafts in her Second Remodel is in reference to her real-life counterpart's involvement in relief transport duty after the 1923 Great Kanto Earthquake.Explanation
  • Lethal Joke Item: Nagato's second revision allows her to equip destroyer-caliber main guns. This might sound rather gimmicky at first, but with the Akizuki-class's main guns note  it allows her to effectively perform both Anti-Air Cut-In and retain a reliable artillery shelling setup (albeit with a significant firepower reduction compared to equipping battleship's large caliber main guns). The AACI itself was nowhere near in the league of Maya or the Akizuki-class, but it nonetheless gives a multirole function to a battleship without crippling its main role.
  • Long Hair Is Feminine: Inverted; despite her being the member of her class with long hair, she has more masculine traits.
  • Necessary Drawback: For the amount of changes and improvements in Nagato's second revision, the cost is a level requirement of 88 with a blueprint and a whopping 8,800 ammo and 9,200 steel, both of which are amounts that exceed the common Yamato-class LSC recipe. Her consumption in fuel and ammo also increases considerably to a level between the Vittorio Veneto-class and Iowa.
  • Nice, Mean, and In-Between: The mean to Mutsu's nice and Ooyodo's in-between, in the anime. Though far from obnoxious, she's got noticeably less skill at dealing with people compared to her sister Mutsu, and even Ooyodo is far more used at dealing with the other shipgirls' antics, namely Kongou.
  • Not So Stoic: As exemplified by her Cuteness Proximity moment in Episode 8.
  • Number Two: She's the Secretary to the Admiral in the anime, thus making her this by default.
  • Overshadowed by Awesome: If Fubuki, Shimakaze, Kongou and Yamato were not as popular as they are now, Nagato would have effectively been the poster child of the game. Her standing in the fandom (well-loved) and the game proper (number one in the sorting) are very high and well-appreciated, but unfortunately not enough to compete with the other characters.
    • This kinda got downplayed with the release of her second remodel, giving her stats that can rival the more powerful fleet girls, greater versatility in her equipment options, and a more badass and up-to-date design. And that is not even counting her infamy as a lover of cute things despite her tough-girl image.
    • This is also given a nod to in the anime, where her short-tempered personality is implied to be a result of this.
  • Repressed Memories: Of her involvement in Operation Crossroads, as per her marriage line:
Nagato: What is it I wonder? What is that landscape, deep inside my memories? Friendly and enemy ships, and then that enormous light... Hey, Admiral...I must be stressed out.
  • The Stoic: She somewhat speaks in a deep, near-monotonous tone in most of her appearances in the anime, due to her role as Secretary Ship of the fleet.
  • Sole Survivor: Of not only her ship class, but of all the battleships in the Imperial Japanese Navy.
    • Born Lucky: Due to that, she has a higher base luck than most battleships at 32 in her first remodel, up to 99. With her second revision, it increases to 40 with a maximum level of 108, placing her one point behind Warspite.
  • Took a Level in Badass:
    • Received her second revision in the 22nd May, 2017 update, the first of the original battleships to do so since Yamashiro in 2014. This remodel is fairly expansive for a remodel that doesn't change the ship type in any way. While the increase to health and anti-air are minor, her armor and firepower are significantly increased, and the latter three combined place Nagato on a similar level to Yamato in AA and Iowa in armor and firepower. Her base equipment includes the rare Prototype 41cm triple gun mounts and 10cm high-angle carriage mount, and she gains the ability to equip landing craft, a first for battleships. When she claims that she isn't losing to newer battleships, she certainly lives up to her boast.
    • Some time after after Nelson (a fellow Big 7 Battleship) was introduced, she gains the ability to perform a special cut-in as the fleet flagship. While it only requires only one additional battleship instead of two surface shipgirls and is more powerful overall, it also consumes additional ammunition for its participants and requires Echelon formation instead of Double Line, reducing effectiveness of torpedo attacks whenever the cut-in is used.
  • Tranquil Fury: She was not amused by Kongou's big entrance when she arrives late for mission control, especially after the flying glomp she attempts on the Admiral (mistaking Ooyodo for him). Her voice tone when admonishing Kongou speaks volumes.
Nagato: (not too pleased) Unfortunately, the Admiral is not here at the present moment.

Second "Nagato-class battleship, Mutsu. Pleased to meet you. Don't play with fire too much, ok? Please..."

Mutsu is the personification of the Japanese battleship Mutsu. Mutsu has a demure and ladylike personality that contrasts wildly with her role as a front-line battleship.

In the anime, instead of being a front-line Battleship, she instead serves as the assistant of her sister Nagato, making her the secretary of the Admiral's secretary.
  • Animal Motifs: Her horn-like headgear gives her a resemblance to a slug or a snail. Drawing Mutsu as a slug became a meme in some parts.
  • Benevolent Boss: In the anime where she is Nagato's second-in-command; while Nagato is far from a Mean Boss, she is quite aloof, cold and stern. Mutsu has much better people skills.
  • Born Unlucky: Before the introduction of Taihou, she had the lowest luck stat in the game, given she was sunk at home by a disgruntled crewman who set her munitions on fire. (Probably; see below.)
    • In addition, the real Mutsu was an unfortunate target of the ever-so-infamous Washington Naval Treaty, so she was a literal case of Born Unlucky.note
  • Character Catchphrase: "Ara? Ara-ara~", a line usually associated with sweet big sisterly characters.
  • Chained by Fashion: She has an anchor with a chain wrapped around her left leg.
  • Historical In-Joke: The 4koma has Fubuki and Shirayuki going to the Nagato-class' room, a simple room covered in blast-resistant walls and ironclad furniture; Nagato says that it's strong enough to withstand the blast from Mutsu. Fanworks go further with her tendency of blowing herself up.
  • Man on Fire: Mutsu is always mentioned in the game along the lines of "Don't play with fire." There is a reason behind that: The real life Mutsu's no. 3 turret exploded on June 8, 1943 when Mutsu was moored in the Hashirajima fleet anchorage. It was concluded that the explosion was most likely caused by a disgruntled, suicidal crewman who sabotaged and set the fire around the turret, although the true story behind the explosion remains a mystery. Regardless, the result of the explosion caused Mutsu to literally split into half. If you put it this way, she was indeed literally on fire.note
  • My Eyes Are Up Here: In her marriage line.
Mutsu: Admiral, why are you looking at my third gun turret? If you're going to look, look over here.
  • Nice, Mean, and In-Between: The nice to Mutsu's mean and Ooyodo's in-between, in the anime. She's much better at dealing with people than her sister Nagato and more open than Ooyodo, the latter of which is also used at dealing with the other shipgirls' antics.
  • Number Two: Along with Nagato, she's this in the anime. Notably, she's the helper for her sister, who's the Admiral's Secretary, thus also making her the "number two" to the team's actual "number two".
  • Took a Level in Badass: She obtained her second remodel with the 27 February 2019 update with similar stat upgrades to her elder sister, a special attack of her own (as a Big Seven) and a marked improvement in luck (from 6 to 16), making her average luck instead of poor luck.

     The Yamato-Class
  • Awesome, but Impractical: The most awesome ship class, but also the most impractical of them all. They have the highest firepower stats in the game, as well as formidable armor and AA, but devour even more resources than the other battleships for maintenance and take an eternity to repair, especially when under heavy damage. Not to mention you can only get them through Large Ship Construction, meaning you're gonna have to pump tons and tons of resources just to have a chance to obtain them. Rational Admirals not particularly interested in the Yamato-class would build an experienced and balanced fleet before devoting such a huge amount of resources. Devoting at least 18,000 resources (four types combined) only for a 2.5% chance each to get Yamato or Musashi, causes many players to get frustrated and desperate from LSC failures, some to the extent of outright abandoning the game, making the two truly impractical.
    • Their second remodels exaggerate this further (See details on their respective profiles below.)
  • Big Eaters: Consumption-wise, each of the Yamato sisters consume 250 Fuel and 300 Ammo (325 upon remodel) from empty. By comparison, Nagato only needs 100 Fuel and 130 Ammo (160 by remodel) - that's about more than twice for a full replenishment. The anime shows that Yamato uses so much fuel that she can barely get out of port before getting hungry.
  • Infinity +1 Sword: For the lucky few to both manage to craft one of the Yamato sisters and have enough resources to sortie them consistently, they are almost gamebreakingly powerful. In addition to having the highest firepower, health and armor in the game, they are the only ships that can equip multiple 46cm main guns without incurring an accuracy penaltynote .
  • Rare Random Drop: Currently only available for crafting via Large Ship Construction, compared to the rest of the IJN Battleships which can be receieved as sortie drops. And even with use of appropriately large amount of resources, the chances of admirals getting them in construction is pretty low.
    • This also extends to their 46cm main guns as well, as they're only available as a rare product of equipment crafting with a recipe of 300 ammo apart from being the Yamato-class's stock equipment, making it very difficult to procure enough spare guns to improve the 46cm Triple Gun Mount, let alone the Prototype 51cm Twin Gun Mount, which consume at least two of them.
  • Sailor Fuku: The only battleship class to wear one, although it is extensively modified and only Yamato wears it correctly, while Musashi's top is draped on her back in her base and kai remodels, before adopting a similar style to her sister.
  • Sibling Yin-Yang: Yamato is reserved and gentle, while Musashi is boisterous and speaks more openly. Lampshaded in the 4koma where the girls expect Yamato's sister to be a classic Japanese beauty like her, only to be shocked upon seeing Musashi for the first time.

"First of the Yamato-class battleships, Yamato. Heading forth!"

Yamato (named after the ancient province of Yamato, also an ancient name for Japan) is the personification of the Japanese battleship Yamato. She is a strong, yet shy and polite, ship that has to frequently correct the Admiral about being called "Yamato Hotel".

In the anime, Yamato finally makes her appearance in episode 8, and oversees the management of the Truk Lagoon Base. Said base, however, seems more like a four-star hotel than an anchorage on the front lines. Due to her management duties, Yamato has barely any battlefield experience, but the truth of the matter is that, despite being essentially the most powerful ship in the fleet, she's far too expensive resource-wise to sortie. This fact bothers her greatly.
  • A-Cup Angst: Downplayed. While she's not flat by any measure, her Type 91 bra makes her bust line appear considerably larger than it actually is. She's probably just jealous of Musashi.
  • Adaptation Dye-Job: The first anime gave her a brighter maroon hair and eyes, compared to her appearance in the game which has more brown than red. The second anime has her back to being a brunette with reddish eyes.
  • Berserk Button: Downplayed due to her reserved nature, but Yamato hates being reminded about how Awesome, but Impractical she is, with special mention towards calling her a "hotel".
  • Big Eater: Apart from the entry above, episode 8 of the anime showed that she can manage to out-eat even Akagi.
  • Cherry Blossoms: She wears hair decs that look like cherry blossoms in her hair, and fanartists are fond of depicting her with actual cherry blossoms. This may be due to how the name "Yamato" is an ancient name for Japan with cherry blossoms being Japan's national flower, as well as how "Yamato" is a historically poetic name.
  • Curtains Match the Window: As stated in the Adaptation Dye-Job entry, the first anime gave her maroon hair and eyes.
  • Clothing Damage: Her Summer Damaged Art takes this to ludicrous extremes, with both her hands busy holding together what remains of her swimsuit.
  • A Day in the Limelight: Episode 8 of the anime first season focuses on her life as caretaker of the Truk Base, and her concern for not being allowed to sortie like most of the fleet girls. The episode title is even a reference to one of her hourly lines. (See Got Me Doing It entry below.)
  • Embarrassing Nickname: About being called "Yamato Hotel". In the arcade version, whenever she says this, she goes to aim her cannons at the screen.note
Yamato: Hotel, you say? N-no, you're wrong!
  • Fashionable Asymmetry: Has a normal leg sock on her right and a thigh-high on her left. This apparently "influences" most of the ships that went with her in Operation Ten-Go (namely, Yahagi note , Hatsushimo, Isokaze, Asashimo, and Kasumi).
  • Foil: To Iowa. A shy and polite demeanor to Iowa's Boisterous Bruiser attitude, lead ships of their respective navies' largest and most powerful battleship class, and reds to Iowa's grays. And they were more or less like hotels in their respective navies - Iowa has a bathtub and elevator due to ferrying President Franklin D. Roosevelt to Tehran, while Yamato's nickname of "Hotel Yamato" was because she had better living conditions compared to other IJN ships.
  • Got Me Doing It: Yamato may hate being called a hotel, but she sometimes lapses into using it herself.
Yamato: 1200. For lunch time, there's Hotel Yamato's famous... wait... I'm not a hotel!
  • Historical In-Joke: The reason for her Type-91 Shell Bra in her base and Kai damaged art. The Allied Fleet did not know the true size of the Yamato-class's main guns until very late in the war; they initially thought she had 14- or 16-inch guns at maximum.
  • Holiday Mode: Gets a Summer Swimsuit as part of the August 2016 Update.
  • Lightning Bruiser: Her Kai Ni remodel turns her into a fast battleship.
  • Mirror Character: Anime-wise to Fubuki, as both their backstories delve into their concerns for not being able to sortie with the other fleet girls: in Yamato's case, it's because of her high resource consumption and the need to keep her existence secret from the Abyssals; in Fubuki's, it's due to lack of combat experience on her part.
  • My Blood Runs Hot: Inverted, apparently her skin is cold to touch. Just like Kaga is used like a heater in the 4koma, Yamato gets hugged by the destroyers in hot summer. It's part of her "Hotel" schtick.
  • Necessary Drawback:
    • She has a slightly better evasion, higher base Luck (10 as stock, 13 at remodel) and better anti-air compared to her sister, at the cost of a higher Remodel Level Requirement (Lvl60 compared to Musashi's Lvl40)
    • Her Kai Ni remodel dethroned Musashi's to be the most resource intensive in the game. She has basically similar resource requirements as her younger sister's remodel (9900 ammo, 3 Remodel Blueprints, 3 New Model Artillery Improvement Materials, 1 Action Report) but with higher steel at 9900, and 2 New Model High Temperature High Pressure Boilers (Which cannot be crafted and, apart from time-limited quests, can only be obtained from Amatsukaze (a Rare Random Drop) and Musashi post-Kai Ni (already a resource drain on her own.) Her resource consumption rate is also higher than Musashi Kai Ni's (275 Fuel, 350 Ammo), with her Kai Ni having 290 Fuel and 350 Ammo and her Kai Ni Juu having 300 Fuel and 400 Ammo, making her the ship with the highest resource consumption rate.
  • Parasol of Prettiness: Easy to miss, but yes, she's actually holding a small one in her right hand. The shaft of the parasol is based on the battleship's distinctive inverted-tripod mast.
  • Reflexive Response: In the anime, in the original Japanese, when Kongou corrects Kitakami, Ooi and Fubuki on the pronouciation of the word "hotel", Yamato was, unfortunately, close to them, resulting in this hilarious exchange...
Kongou: It is not [pronounced] "ho-te-ru", it's "HOTEL"!
Yamato: (distressed) I'M NOT A HOTEL! (everyone looks at Yamato, confused) ...oh. I-I'm sorry!
  • Shrinking Violet: According to Musashi.
Musashi: If Yamato is here, then that's amazing. That girl, she's unexpectedly shy, you know. She doesn't go out much.
  • Spock Speak: Well-spoken at all times.
  • Stealth Pun: Her Summer art has her holding three bottles of Ramune (a Japanese soft drink) in between her left arm and her breasts. Not apparent at first glance, until one realizes that the word "chest" translates to "mune".
  • Supreme Chef: Her hourlies have her serve her "famous" meals to the Admiral, including consomme for breakfast and a full-course dinner. Iowa is very appreciative of her cooking skills, though she accidentally insults Yamato in the process. This is true to history; one of the many amenities on the real Yamato was cooks recruited from restaurants and multiple-course meals for the officers.
  • Take Up My Sword: Her sinking line evokes this, particularly to her sister battleship and her half-sister carrier. Doubles as a sick Irony on her part.note
Yamato: "Again... I pass away... all hands... top deck... Musashi... Shinano... I leave the rest to you..."
  • Took a Level in Badass: After getting overshadowed by Musashi's Kai Ni for 4 years, she finally received hers on the 8 June 2022 update, which gave her not one, but two convertible remodel forms, both having 5 equipment slots. Her normal Kai Ni form turns her into a Fast Battleship, thereby dethroning Iowa as the strongest FBB in terms of Firepower, HP and Armor. Then, her Kai Ni Juu (Heavy) converts her into an Aviation Battleship where, while still unable to equip normal Fighter planes and Dive Bombers like the Ise sisters in their Kai Ni, she does however has a large 22 airwing slot. While this form turns her back into a slow battleship, it comes with a significant stat boost, with her Firepower stat buffed up to 152 (becoming the Battleship with the Highest Firepower in game,) and the ability to equip the Prototype 51cm Triple Gun Mount without an evasion penalty.note  She can also equip anti installation tanks, has an AACI that can rival Atlanta's, combat air superiority, and participate in anti-sub warfare (which previously only the Fusou- and Ise-Class could only manage upon remodeling into Aviation Battleships.) In addition, as an Aviation Battleship, she can now participate in Transport Combined Fleet.
    • Not to mention, she gains her own brand of Special Attack (Dubbed the Yamato Touch) at Kai Ni/Kai Ni Juu. While it can only activate when paired with certain ships, it comes 2 variations of said special attack: a 2-ship variant (Musashi Kai Ni, Iowa Kai, Bismarck drei and Richelieu Kai) and a 3-ship variation (Musashi and Nagato Kai Ni, Musashi and Mutsu Kai Ni, Nagato and Mutsu Kai Nis, Kongou and Hiei Kai Ni Cs, Ise and Hyuuga Kai Nis, Fusou and Yamashiro Kai Nis, Washington and South Dakota Kais, Colorado and Maryland Kais, Nelson and Warspite Kais, Roma Kai and Italia.)
  • Understatement:
Yamato: "Admiral? Erm~ well...my living condition is a level above the other ship girls...is that okay?"
Side note: Air conditioned quarters, bathhouse, kitchen with refrigeration facility, full course meal for officers with live band playing in the background...
  • World's Strongest Man: Despite her shyness, she's shown to be the strongest battleship in the anime. Though you wouldn't expect less of the historically strongest battleship in real life, would you?
  • You Are in Command Now: In the movie, attrition forces her to take command of the Second Fleet.

"Hmpf, it seems that I've kept you waiting... Second of the Yamato-class battleships, Musashi, has arrived!"

Musashinote  is the personification of the Japanese battleship Musashi. She is a Hot-Blooded Boisterous Bruiser who really loves battles.
  • Affectionate Nickname: Apart from referring to the player as "Admiral", she also calls him her "partner". Made more prominent with her dialogues after her Second Remodel.
  • Ambiguously Brown: A design choice that frankly puzzled many fan artists at first. note
  • Badass Arm-Fold: A variation with her in-game portrait. See main pic.
  • BFG: By default, her iconic 46cm Triple Main Gun Turrets count. Then her second remodel grants her access to the Prototype 51cm Twin Gun Mount (the largest-caliber main guns available in-game) as part thereof.
  • Big Eater: Not unlike her sister (see above entry), but she's even more honest about it as indicated in her hourlies. Made more evident with her Christmas 2015 line:
Musashi: *nom* *nom* It's good... taste's good! Christmas ain't so bad after all! You oughta eat more, Admiral!
  • Big Ego, Hidden Depths: She is extremely proud and unabashedly declares herself the mightiest ship in the fleet, but her marriage and sinking lines imply that her haughtiness and love for battles stem from a fierce desire to protect her fellow shipgirls and to keep people safe.
  • Big Little Sister: To Yamato. Though they're both depicted as very tall and well built, the historical Musashi had greater displacement and more secondary guns than the Yamato, despite being slightly smaller and newer. This is reflected in game by Musashi having much larger "fuel tanks".
  • Boisterous Bruiser: Speaks more haughtily than her elder sister. And packs a slightly harder punch, too.
  • Born Unlucky: Though not to the extent of Mutsu or the Fusou-class, she has below average base luck (10 at basic model, 9 at first remodel, back to 10 at second remodel), likely in reference to how her real-life counterpart was sunk without ever having fired on an enemy surface ship.
  • Breaking the Fourth Wall: Her idle line as your secretary:
Musashi: Admiral, if you're busy, you should close the browser - that's the Admiral way... What? You were thinking of the next strategy? Oh, my apologies then.
  • Coat Cape: She is supposed to have a Sailor Fuku in her base and Kai arts much like Yamato, but she wears it like this instead. Gains a longer one with her Kai-2 remodel.
  • Declaration of Protection: To the Admiral in her marriage line.
Musashi: "Admiral, you can trust that I will protect you from anyone who would aim at you. Oh, you doubt me? This Musashi, you are taking her lightly. At any rate, I look forward to working together, partner."
  • Determinator:
    • Her ludicrous health pool and armor, both the highest in game for any of your units, and her moderate damage quote paint her as this. A reference to the ridiculous amount of damage she endured during the Battle of Sibuyan Sea (part of the set of battles that would comprise the Battle of Leyte Gulf), where she remained operational after being struck by nineteen torpedoes, twenty cannon strikes and seventeen bombs before finally going down.
Musashi: "Not yet... with just this, this Musashi... will never sink!"
    • Parodied in the 4koma where she boasts about her durability to Fubuki and tells the latter to punch her body. Musashi is fine... but after 20 punches, she "sinks" down, saying that taking more than 20 (torpedoes) is too much for her.
  • Fanservice Pack: Inverted. Her second remodel has her don an outfit which actually covers more of her body, an evolution in direct opposition to how most Kai Ni's go nowadays.
  • Fashionable Asymmetry: While she wears bandages on her legs, the left seems to reach up to her upper thigh.
  • Gender-Blender Name: Not exactly apparent considering her actual namesake, but she also shares her name with the legendary Japanese Swordsman, Miyamoto Musashi. Which explains some of her Samurai-inspired lines and archaic language tics.
  • Girlish Pigtails: Not evident, but has a couple of thin strands that extend down to her shoulders.
  • The Glasses Come Off: She does take them off slightly when damaged in her Kai-2 art.
  • Historical In-Joke: In the 4koma she flooded the public bath's water when she enters it. It's a reference to the real life Musashi flooding her surroundings when she was launched.
  • I Regret Nothing: Her sinking dialogue.
Musashi: "For I, Musashi, managed to block the attacks on everybody else... well... I'm... satisfied..."
  • Leitmotif: Musashi's Return. Available as a BGM upon acquiring the limited-offer furniture. (See Real Life Writes the Plot)
  • My Greatest Failure: As inferred from one of her night time battle dialogues, she hasn't completely forgotten her fate during her final sortie. (see Determinator entry)
Musashi: That's right! I can't let this go like what happened at Sibuyan Sea!
  • Necessary Drawback:
    • She can be remodeled at a much lower level, and having larger HP pool and higher armor values than Yamato, but has less anti-air, slightly lower evasion and incredibly low luck.
    • Her Kai Ni is the most resource-intensive remodel in the game, requiring not only her level to be 89, one level higher than Nagato’s and the highest remodel level of the battleships in the game, but also needing 9600 steel, 9900 ammo, 3 blueprints, 3 New Type Artillery Armament Materials, and an action report. In addition her consumption is increased by 25 units in both fuel and ammo, making her the most resource-heavy ship behind Yamato. Her plane count also drops to 5 in the first three slots and her fifth. Though by 2022, her remodel is no longer the most resource intensive in the game (Dethroned by her sister ship, Yamato).
  • Power Up Full Color Change: Downplayed, as it is her clothing (what little she has, barring her budget Sarashi) which changes color, from the default deep-red-on-black to black with white accents upon her remodel (See note on Ambiguously Brown entry for more details.)
  • Real Life Writes the Plot: In March 2015, the wreck of the real life Musashi was discovered after being lost for nearly 70 years. In commemoration, a limited-time furniture item was added, Musashi was given her own Leitmotif, and her drop rate from the LSC was temporarily increased.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: A bright red pair to accentuate her Boisterous Bruiser status.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: Serves as the red, hot-blooded warrior to Yamato's blue.
  • Sarashi: What her "bra" seems to be. She even wears it underneath her uniform in her second remodel.
  • Smug Super: Often boasts about her combat prowess; as she is a Yamato, she's absolutely able to back it up.
  • Specs of Awesome: Wears glasses and is among the strongest battleships in the game. Spoofed in the 4koma where Miyuki says it means that Musashi is "always in New Year's Eve"note ; she threatens to shoot Miyuki after that.
  • Stripperiffic: Among all of the Fleet Girls introduced up to the Summer 2016 event (including KanColle Kai for the Play Station Vita), she has the least amount of body covering, with only a skirt, a Coat Cape, and a budget Sarashi over the "important bits." Not even the pinup girl-inspired Iowa could contend for such distinction. This does get averted as of her Kai-2 art, though.
  • Third-Person Person: Usually refers to herself by her given name, and rather haughtily at that.
  • Took a Level in Badass: Her remodel in the Winter 2018 patch increases her formidability across the board. Apart from an overall increase in general stats, she also comes with rare equipment normally locked behind ranking rewards, which includes the Prototype 51cm Twin Gun Mounts, a 15m Duplex Rangefinder + Type 21 RADAR Kai 2, and a 10cm Twin High-angle Gun Mount + Additional Machine Guns. In addition, she is also the first of the few ships in the game to posses 5 equipment slots, allowing more flexibility to her equipment setups.
    • Coming off from Yamato Kai Ni/Kai Ni Juu gaining a special attack, Musashi Kai Ni also gain a special attack too, albeit it can only occur when she is paired with Yamato Kai Ni/Kai Ni Juu.
  • Trademark Favorite Food:
    • A few of her hourly lines reference cuisine from her home port of Nagasaki, including the famous Sasebo Burger. Fandom has taken this and made hamburgers one of Musashi's favorite foods.
    • Upon release of her second remodel, her revised hourlies also reveal that she can also cook curry, to which she offers to both the Admiral and Kiyoshimo.
Musashi: (19:00) I finally made it. It's my special curry. Oh, Kiyoshimo. You have some too! Eat up and become a splendid person. The time? Ah, it's 7 o'clock.
  • Vapor Wear: A recent tweet from her official artist confirms that Musashi's "underwear" is little more than a few bandages from her sarashi. This does get alleviated upon her Second Remodel, where she finally gets a pair of black underwear.

Light Aircraft Carriers (CVL)

The smaller cousin of the Fleet or Standard Carrier, the ship class was historically designed to keep up and directly support Fleet Carriers. They have much lower Armor and Hit Point values than their bigger relatives, and have a lower plane capacity as well, but in return they also have far lower maintenance costs, and can use their planes to attack submarines. Like Fleet Carriers however, Light Carriers are helpless at night battles (unless they have Night Operation Aviation Personnel equipped, or her name is Taiyou Kai 2).

  • Marionette Master: This is how the Chitose-class control their planes once they convert into carriers.
  • Paper Talisman: What Ryuujou and the Hiyou-class use for their planes, being onmyoji.
  • Theme Naming: All of them, save for the Chitose-classnote , are named after flying animals, fictional or not, that are considered auspicious. Purpose-built carriers use "龍" (Dragon or "Ryuu"), "鶴" (Crane or "Kaku") and "鳳" (Phoenix or "Hou"). Converted warships (like the Shouhou-class, Ryuuhou and alluded to with the Chitose-class' design) use "鳳" (Phoenix) in particular. Converted merchant-ships (like the Hiyou-class) use "鷹" (Hawk/Falcon or "You") instead of the above.

"Aircraft carrier, Houshou. Though I'm inexperienced, I look forward to your guidance."

Houshou (Flying Phoenix) is the personification of the Japanese aircraft carrier Houshou. She has a very motherly, caring personality and is more reserved than the other ships.
  • Ascended Meme: As her Team Mom attribute segues very well with the traditional image of a Japanese pub hostess (女将 okami), many fanarts depict her as one. Later, updated idle dialogues reveal that she does run a pub after all.
  • Berserk Button: The 4koma shows that calling her a grandmother (or referring to her and Ryuujou's room as feeling like a "rural grandmother's home") does push her tolerance.
  • Feminine Women Can Cook: Fitting her image as one of the most motherly characters, she's a capable cook, apparently good enough to run a restaurant.
  • Meaningful Name: Phoenix in Flight. She is, after all, the world's and the IJN's first commissioned aircraft carrier.
  • Proper Tights with a Skirt: While she's actually wearing white thigh-highs, the length of her hakama-skirt makes it look like this.
  • Team Mom: Has a warm and motherly tone of voice, and acts like a traditional conscientious housewife.
    • Historically, Houshou was the first carrier in service that had been laid down as a carrier (the very first carrier, HMS Argus, was a passenger liner convert; HMS Hermes was laid down before Houshou but completed after her; and USS Langley was converted from the collier USS Jupiter). By the time World War Two rolled around, she was too old and outdated for frontline duty and spent most of the war as a training ship, helping to "raise" the next generation of Japanese naval aviators. After the war, she served as a repatriation transport, bringing home Japanese soldiers from faraway fronts before being scrapped.
  • Yamato Nadeshiko: Acts like a stereotypical "good wife" of the old days.
Houshou: You must be so tired. Should I prepare the bath? Or dinner? Or... hehe, just kidding.

"Light aircraft carrier, Ryuujou! Ain't my silhouette distinctive? But, launching carrier planes one after another makes me a proper carrier, ya know! You can count on me!"

Ryuujou (Prancing Dragon) is the personification of the Japanese aircraft carrier Ryuujou. She speaks in a Kansai dialect and looks smaller and younger than all of the other carriers. She is also known for her visibly flat chest.
  • A-Cup Angst: In the 4-koma, and also in fanart. Especially in fanart.
    • In the 4-koma, she was against second remodels due to the mistaken impression that it equated to "concentrated chest armor strengthening".
    • In Shimakaze's manga, Shimakaze mistook her for a destroyer because of her flat chest, even after she launched aircraft.
    • The arcade games rubs more salt into the wound. As of October 2017, of the three carriers (the other two being Zuihou and Zuikaku) that have made the jump into the arcade version with "flight-deck chests", she is the only one of those three who, even when damaged, is completely flat when viewed from the side, whereas Zuihou has modest, yet visible assets, while Zuikaku's assets only look small when compared to the CarDiv1 and CarDiv2 girls, as otherwise they're normally sized for someone of her stature.
  • Com Mon: Only applies to experienced players constantly playing 5-4.
  • Girlish Pigtails: Sports a reasonably large pair (see pic).
  • Happy Holidays Dress: Gains custom Christmas-themed sprites for both her first and second remodels during Christmas 2014.
  • Petite Pride: In the game only. She seems to be proud of her distinctive silhouette.note  Ironically, Memetic Mutation instead turned this into A-Cup Angst.
  • Sorry That I'm Dying: If she gets sunk.
Ryuujou: I'm... a little tired... sorry...
  • Took a Level in Badass: Her second remodel, while it doesn't give her large breasts, gives her what's needed to be the fourth strongest CVL in the game (behind the Chitose-class, Jun'you and Hiyou) with a firepower on par with the Fleet Carriers, a well-needed upgrade to her plane count and an all-around upgrade to her survivability.

"My name is Izumo Ma... no, Hiyou. I'm an aircraft carrier. Pleased to meet you, Admiral!"

Hiyou (Flying Hawk) is the personification of the Japanese aircraft carrier Hiyou.
  • Cloudcuckoolander's Minder: To Jun'you in fanworks (and occasionally the 4koma), due to her being a carefree drunkard.
  • Fanservice Pack: She goes up about at least two sizes after her remodel.
  • Foil: She is more serious compared to the Hard-Drinking Party Girl Jun'you.
  • Hidden Depths: While in canon, she is happy about being a Carrier, in fanon she is shown to have the desire to return to being an ocean liner once the war with the Abyssal Fleet is over.
Hiyou: Even though, I was originally supposed to be a commercial cruise ship... Ah well.
  • Hime Cut: Her elegant hairstyle matches her personality and serves as a nod to her original role as a pleasure cruiser.

"Ex-merchant ship aircraft carrier, Jun'you~! Woohoo!"

Jun'you (Peregrine Falcon) is the personification of the Japanese aircraft carrier Jun'you.
  • Anime Hair: Her spiky mane of hair is pretty unique, really.
  • Born Lucky: Upon her second remodel, has the single highest base luck among all light carriers at 41 (84 at maximum, beaten only by Zuihou at 89) in reference to being the Sole Survivor of her class.
  • Drunken Master: One of the most potent Light Carriers in the game (second only to the remodeled Chitose-class converted Light Carriers), and yet also the most sloshed in terms of dialogue. See Hard-Drinking Party Girl entry below.
  • Fanservice Pack: Especially compared to her relatively tame base damage sprite, her second remodel's damage sprite is very revealing and shows her supple... cannons. In fact, it's so hot and sexy that the characters written over her bra and panties literally mean "forbidden".
  • Hard-Drinking Party Girl:
    • Several of her lines directly reference alcohol and everything else she says has a slurred, drunken lilt. Expanded in other works where she is frequently seen with a bottle and is referred to (along with Chitose) as one of "the alcoholic carriers". Historical Note
      Jun'you: Ah~! Admiral, good work♪ Eh? N-no, I haven't been drinking~. To~tally sober.
    • When her second remodel comes around, she ends up drinking even more, going from tipsy to drunk enough to see double.
    • When players equip their office with the Bar furniture and set Jun'you as their secretary, the bar becomes fully loaded with whiskey, beer, sake, wine and just about everything else nearly 24/7.
    • In the 4koma she hits it instantly with Pola.
  • Hot-Blooded: During combat, she gets fired up.
  • Took a Level in Badass: Her second remodel. In addition to a general stat boost and redistribution of her plane slots, she also gains top of the line Firepower, on par with Ryuujou, the highest Luck of all Light Carriers and the absolute highest Evasion of all Light and Standard carriers, surpassing even Hiryuu Kai Ni.
  • Verbal Tic: "Hyahaa~!"

"Light aircraft carrier Shouhou, at your service. I realize that I'm a little small, but please make a place for me in your fleet!"

Shouhou (Auspicious Phoenix or Happy Phoenix) is the personification of the Japanese aircraft carrier Shouhou.
  • Art Evolution: She received brand new art for the early summer 2015 update. Hard to believe it's the same artist!
  • Cool Big Sis: To Zuihou.
  • Fashionable Asymmetry: She only wears the right side of her top.
  • Hime Cut: Her default hairstyle, accented with small purple ribbons on the side and rear.
  • Ironic Name: For someone named 'Auspicious', her luck stat is unexceptional at 10 base, maxing out at 59 at Kai.
  • Parasol of Prettiness: Her 2015 rainy season portrait gives her one.
  • Sarashi: One that's designed to look like her flight deck. It tends to dominate her fanart.
  • Sorry That I'm Dying: If she gets sunk.
Shouhou: Is this... it? I'm so sorry...
  • Stripperiffic: Until the arrival of Unryuu, she wore the least of any aircraft carrier in the series; just half a shirt, a wrap around her breasts, and a miniskirt. Averted with her 2015 rainy season portrait where she finally wears her top correctly in-game.

"I'm Zuihou. I'm a light carrier, but with some experience, I'll be just as good as a regular carrier, just you see!"

Zuihou (Fortunate Phoenix) is the personification of the Japanese aircraft carrier Zuihou. note
  • A-Cup Angst: In the 4-koma. Ryuujou is not the only aircraft carrier with an extra flight deck.
Shouhou: Well, any straight, flat place would work, really...
    Fubuki: (looking at Zuihou) Flat...
Zuihou: Wait... don't look at me!!
  • Born Lucky: Starts with a base of 30 luck, maxing out to 93 in Kai Ni. Presumably, this is because she made it to the Battle of Cape Engano in 1944, unlike most of Japan's other carriers.
  • Martial Arts Headband: A white one wih red accents. (See pic)
  • Meaningful Name: Her name translates to 'Fortunate Phoenix', and she does indeed have a high luck stat.
  • Rare Random Drop: The only light aircraft carrier that is notoriously hard to get.
  • Sweet Tooth: As seen in her hourly lines.
    Zuihou: 1500. I wanna eat sweets... don't you? Admiral♪
  • Together in Death: Alluded to if she gets sunk.
Zuihou: All hands.... abandon ship... I'm... sunk... Will I... see Shouhou... again?
  • Took a Level in Badass: The 21 February 2018 live update introduced her Kai Ni remodel, or rather, remodels, which bolstered her combat and survival abilities all over and converted her into one of the best CVLs in game. On top of that, she gets a Kai Ni B remodel which trades some of her plane slots for ASW capabilities and the ability to perform OASW with the correct conditions, effectively turning her into an Escort Carrier a la Taiyou as she can join Transport Combined Fleet in this form. And while she can't equip all the ASW equipment Taiyou can (she's limited to large sonars) and has nearly half Taiyou's max ASW, she still remains a very strong Light Carrier with superior aircraft distribution and can still hold her own well in regular battles.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: One of her hourlies, and a lot of her seasonal lines portray her love for tamagoyaki (rolled omelet).

     The Chitose-Class Seaplane Carrier/CVL

  • Awesome, but Impractical: As Seaplane Carriers. Although they look awesome in their official art, they have little good use during sorties except in expeditions where they can equip an item that increases the yield of resources.
    • In recent patch, they can become quite useful for new admirals who manage to had them, where they able to trigger seaplane spotting in maps where enemy carriers are absent as well as in 1-5, where they are good substitute for dealing against submarines.
    • They are also a good substitute for torpedo cruisers. Both sisters can equip midget subs and have rather high torpedo stat. Their second remodel at level 12 comes with 2 midget subs for each. Just give them bombers and double midget subs, upgrade torpedo stat and enjoy your alpha strike with torpedoes and bombers before the battle starts.
  • Fanservice Pack: Both sisters become much bustier as they're upgraded to their Kai 2 models as Light Carriers, as their damaged sprites reveal them to have become incredibly well-stacked despite their normal sprites having the same dimensions and shape as their previous ones.
    • Their Fall 2015 Seasonal artwork takes it to new levels, as their damaged art puts their significant assets front and center while their normal art is very restrained.
  • Magikarp Power: The Chitose sisters start as Seaplane Carriers, where their only viable use is to equip seaplanes for aerial reconnaissance and minimal bombing damage in the aerial combat phase. However, they're also the only ships in the game which can be upgraded up to 5 times. Their second upgrade comes equipped with midget submarines that are incredibly useful by virtue of allowing certain ships (namely themselves, low-leveled submarines, and most importantly the torpedo cruisers Kitakami, Ooi and Kiso) to make an initial torpedo attack before the shelling phase. On top of that, their final upgrade at level 50 makes them among the best CVLs in the game.
  • Martial Arts Headband: Black, striped ones.

"I'm Chitose. I'm the the first Japanese seaplane carrier. Nice to meet you!"

Chitose is the personification of the Japanese aircraft carrier Chitose. She is Chiyoda's big sister.
  • Aloof Big Sister: As shown in the Drama CD. While Chiyoda is following her around like a love-struck puppy, Chitose only reservedly lead her on by the nose.
  • Boisterous Bruiser: She takes a lot of pride about her seaplanes.
Chitose: I'm proud of my newly developed E12 seaplanes!
  • Cool Big Sis: Her lines show that she likes to look after Chiyoda.
  • Hard-Drinking Party Girl: Implied in-game, whenever she asks for the Admiral if she wants something to drink. Confirmed in the 4-koma, where she's apparently Jun'you's regular drinking buddy. For some reason this part of her is never mentioned again after she is remodeled.
Chitose: Admiral~ you can really knock them back! Here, another drink!
  • Oblivious to Love: She cares a lot about Chiyoda, but has no idea of her feelings towards her.
Chitose: Ah? Chiyoda, she ran away all angry. I wonder why?
  • Proper Tights with a Skirt: Wears black leggings, in contrast to Chiyoda.
  • Tomboyish Ponytail: Easy to miss in her base art, but her 2015 Fall Seasonal Art does show her waist-length ponytail.

"Seaplane carrier Chiyoda. My older sister Chitose isn't bothering you, is she?"

Chiyoda is the personification of the Japanese aircraft carrier Chiyoda. She looks up to her big sister Chitose and wants to be as strong as her.
  • Big Sister Worship: Most of her lines are about how Chitose is the most awesome thing since midget subs.
  • Clingy Jealous Girl: Towards Chitose. Especially in the Drama CD, when she's angry at the Akatsuki class for merely speaking with her.
  • Dreaming of Times Gone By: In one of her lines (when set as the secretary ship in seaplane carrier form) she appears to be having a dream about the battle where she and Chitose were sunk the last time.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: Towards her sister. She also doesn't like when Chitose spends time with Admiral, but she doesn't seem to have any ill intentions. And she eventually warms up, as shown by some of her lines after she's remodelled to carrier.
Chiyoda: The Admiral's so stubborn! You'll be my rival in love from today! Eh, it can't be helped. Here, have an onigiri.
  • If It's You, It's Okay: If the Admiral marries her as a carrier, she admits that while she still loves Chitose, the Admiral is fine too.
  • Prone to Tears: She cries a lot during her hourly notifications, sulking about Chitose's closeness to the Admiral.
  • What Does She See in Him?: An inversion, since it's the Admiral she's not happy with, rather than Chitose. In her hourly notifications she's asking all the time what the Admiral sees in Chitose and if s/he likes her. Needless to say, Chiyoda is not happy with the Admiral's replies.
Chiyoda: Admiral, what do you think of Chitose-nee? You're gonna answer me in an hour!
(1 hour later) Sooooo, you like Sis, huh? E-eh!? N-No, you can't!

Ryuuhou

"Good day, I'm Submarine Tender Taigei. I may be inexperienced, but I am glad to be of service."
"Carrier Ryuuhou, remodeled from a Submarine Tender. I'll once again try my best as a carrier!"

Taigei ("Great Whale") or Ryuuhou ("Dragon Phoenix") is the personification of Japanese aircraft carrier Ryuuhou. The real-life counterpart was a submarine depot ship that was converted to a light carrier in December 1941.
  • Animal Motifs: Obviously, whales. This is reflected on Taigei's apron as a whale print and a whale pin. Even as Ryuuhou, the whale theme is preserved with her hairpin.
  • Fanservice Pack: While she is already stacked in her Submarine Tender form, her refitting as Light Carrier acceuates this more, especially with her Summer CG in a white, two-piece bikini.
  • Feminine Women Can Cook: As a mother figure to the submarines, she's shown to be a good cook.
  • Historical Badass Upgrade: Her Kai Ni (E) upgrades make her one of the strongest light carriers in the game. The historical ship was poorly designed, poorly built, poorly converted and had a less-than-impressive service record.
  • Magikarp Power: Her second remodel takes a lot of level grinding and a Prototype Flight Deck Catapult, but it gives a massive boost to her otherwise subpar statline.
  • Nice Girl: Especially towards submarines, and later the admiral.
  • Power Up Let Down: There are a number of reasons many Admirals choose not to remodel her to Ryuuhou.
    • Turning her into a Light Carrier costs a blueprint, which are more wisely spent on battleships or heavy cruisers.
    • As a Light Carrier, she has the second fewest number of plane slots and very low stats compared to more readily available light aircraft carriers like Ryuujou, Jun'you and the Chitose sisters. At least, this point has been remediated with her second remodel.
    • As the only Submarine Tender in the game, she is required in order to clear Expedition 39 and allows for better navigation in map 6-1.
  • Rare Random Drop: Attempting to get her is known as "Whaling" in both the English and Japanese fandom.
    Taigei is coming soon!
  • Sailor Fuku: Unsurpisingly, she wears one as a Submarine Tender under her apron. She still wears it (but recolored) as a Light Carrier under her coat. This actually makes her the only aircraft carrier in the whole game to wear one. Even with her change of outfit in her second remodel, she still keeps the sailor collar, which is now fully integrated to her outfit.
  • Team Mom: To the submarines, which makes sense considering her ship class.
  • Took a Level in Badass: She obtained her second remodel with the April 23 2021 update and comes with much improved stats on par with Zuihou (and an implied extensive rebuild of her ship self). Interestingly, Kai Ni E comes before Kai Ni this time.
  • Yamato Nadeshiko: Starts to act like this in her hourly lines when she becomes Ryuuhou:
Ryuuhou:"There sure is dust gathered. Give me a hand, Admiral. Here, hold this."

     The Taiyou-Class
The entire Taiyou-class were carriers converted from passenger ships, when the IJN started really needing ships as the war progressed on.

  • Companion Cube: All three carries an airplane on their left arms as if it was a falcon or hawk. It changes better the further remodels they go through.
  • Meaningful Name: Their converted names have "-you", Japanese for "hawk", and they practice falconry, as referenced by the glove on their left hands and the jesses that's attached to the planes perched on their left arms.

"I'm the carrier Taiyou. I'll do my best to contribute to the fighting force of the fleet."

Kasuga Maru/Taiyou (Large Hawk or goshawk) is the personification of Japanese aircraft carrier Taiyou, previously the passenger-cargo ship Kasuga Maru. She's introduced as the E3 Reward for the Spring 2017 Event.
  • Foreshadowing: Taiyou was previously mentioned by Hayasui and Oyashio months before her introduction.
  • Lap Pillow: A married Taiyou offers this to the player to relieve them of bad dreams.
  • Magikarp Power: Her leveling progression is essentially this. She starts as a pathetically weak escort carrier, but on reaching her second remodel as Taiyou, she gains new perks and ends up about as powerful as her fellow light carriers. Her greatest strengths as Taiyou however lie in anti-submarine warfare; not only is she the only carrier with an ASW stat, said ASW stat is also one of the highest ingame, and she is the only carrier with the ability to perform opening anti-submarine attacks at 65 ASW score. At Kai, she is also the only carrier capable of using sonars and depth charges to enhance her already high ASW score. Finally, at Kai Ni she is the first playable carrier capable of launching airstrikes in night battle, as well as gaining an attack range of Medium.
  • Necessary Drawback: Taiyou Kai Ni is one of the most powerful anti-submarine ships in the game, possessing the ability to perform opening anti-submarine attacks, and effective night airstrike capability. To get Taiyou Kai Ni however, players must first raise her to level 85, and then use a Prototype Flight Deck Catapult to remodel her, an incredibly rare item also used for the Shoukaku-class Kai Ni remodels. Also, even at Kai Ni, she can only carry 39 airplanes, the second lowest maximum in the game (the lowest being Gambier Bay's 34).
  • Shown Their Work: Interestingly enough, Taiyou's portrayal as having a blue hair ribbon is based on an advertisement painting made in the 1930's, which depicted the then-ocean liner Kasuga Maru (seen on the right) as wearing one, not to mention having a similar hairstyle. Taiyou refers to this painting in her 13:00 hourly line.
"1300. My sisters? Yes, we have been portrayed in a painting before. *giggles* It's a bit embarrassing."
  • When She Smiles: As Taiyou Kai Ni.

"Special aircraft carrier, I am Yawata Maru. Yes, I was originally a Nitta Maru-class passenger ship. My younger sister is quite grateful, so I, too... Please take care of me."

Yawata Maru/Un'you (Cloud Hawk) is the personification of Japanese aircraft carrier Un'you, previously the passenger-cargo ship Yawata Maru. She's introduced as a reward for the 28 December 2021 update.
  • Foreshadowing: Only her back and hairstyle was visible on the cover of the 13-20 May 2021 issue of Weekly Famitsu, her entire body in the background while Taiyou and Shin'you were in the foreground. The C2 Staff Twitter account later updated their profile pictures on teasing Un'you's body, and then a fairy for the Type 0 Fighter Model 64 with identical braided hairbuns.
  • Shown Their Work: Interestingly enough, Unyou's portrayal as having braided hairbuns is based on an advertisement painting made in the 1930's, which depicted the then-ocean liner Yawata Maru (seen on the middle) as wearing one, not to mention having a similar hairstyle. Unyou refers to this painting in one of her lines.
"That's right. We sisters were built as excellent freighters. We also had a drawing made of us... Huh? Y-you know about that? I see. Have you seen it?"

"Guten Tag... No, good afternoon. I, my name is Shin'you... that is... a carrier. I apologize for my lack of familiarity. However, I will do my best."

Shin'you (Divine Hawk) is the personification of the Japanese aircraft carrier Shin'you, originally the German ocean liner SS Scharnhorst (unrelated to the battleship Scharnhorst other than namesake), she became stranded in Japan due to the outbreak of the war and eventually bought by the IJN to convert her into an aircraft carrier similar to the Taiyou-class. She's introduced in the Early Fall 2018 Event as the Map E-3 reward.
  • Foreshadowing: One of the July 2018 Rewards was the Ju 87C Kai Ni "Stuka" dive bomber, and its fairy is the same design as Shin'you's before her introduction. The Ju 87C Kai Ni is the bomber seen with Shin'you's Kai Ni form.
  • Gratuitous German: Her base introduction line has her greeting "good day" in German. Her Kai intro has her starting with "Guten" before she quickly switches to Japanese. With every remodel, she uses less and less German to signify that her Japanese - and her confidence - is improving.
  • Magikarp Power: She is essentially the same as Kasuga Maru except that she begins at the same power level as Taiyou. Her main differentiation point is her Airplane capacity, which at Shin'you K2, finishes at a respectable 51 instead of Taiyou K2's paltry 39.
  • Phenotype Stereotype: Due to her unique upbringing (unlike Kongou, Kamoinote , Ro-500note  and even I-504note ), she is represented as a blue-eyed German girl with platinum blonde hair... wearing Japanese clothing.
  • When She Smiles: As Shin'you Kai Ni.

     Converted Mogami-class CVL

Suzuya (3rd)

Kumano (4th)

They are listed along with their other class-mates. While their conversion (a reversible alternate second remodel to a carrier) is ahistorical, it's a reference to the incomplete Ibuki, who started construction as an improved Mogami-class but was converted during construction into a carrier. Their conversion, listed respectively as "Suzuya Carrier Kai Ni" and "Kumano Carrier Kai Ni" would be listed here if they weren't already best known as Heavy Cruisers.

Standard Aircraft Carriers/Armored Aircraft Carriers (CV) note

Otherwise known as Fleet Carriers, they are the counterpart of Battleships, in that they have some of the highest Hit Point and Armor values in the game. Unlike the Battleships, who use their massive guns to attack their enemies, Fleet Carriers use a vast swarm of planes to torpedo and divebomb their foes into submission, at the same time claiming air superiority over a battlefield. In return, they have some of the highest Maintenance costs in the game, take a heck of a long time to be repaired if damaged even a little, cannot attack at all if their hit points are 50% or below (except for Armored Aircraft Carrier Taihou and the A forms of Shoukaku and Zuikaku's second remodels, whose restriction is reduced to 25% or below), and are helpless during Night Battlesnote .

  • Rare Random Drop: All of them have at least a Gold rarity. And all of them are hard to get (except for Akagi, which you can get by completing a quest, unless you sunk her that is).
  • Theme Naming: All but Akagi and Kaganote  as well as Amagi and Katsuraginote  use the same nomenclature as the Light Carriers. If we go by "during-war" designs, the Unryuu-class, save for Unryuu herself, uses Mountain names as Akagi did and they are of a size between a heavy cruiser and a battleship of the era. The Shinano-class (yet-to-be-released into the game as of 2024, even though she already has an alpha concept art dating back to 2013) is another conversion from a battleship hull (a Yamato-class hull, no less) and has therefore kept her original name.

"I'm the aircraft carrier Akagi. If you're forming a mobile carrier squadron, just leave everything to me."

Akagi (after Mt. Akagi, literally "Red Castle") is the personification of the Japanese aircraft carrier Akagi. She is Kaga's best friend and is known due to her reputation of eating up all the Bauxite in the Admiral's inventory and long repair times in the game. Like Kaga, she can be serious at times as well.

Akagi doesn't fit the usual flying animal Theme Naming because she was originally intended to be an Amagi-class battlecruiser. Due to the Washington Naval Treaty temporarily banning battleship and battlecruiser construction she was converted into a carrier.

In the anime, Akagi is still part of the famed 1st Carrier Division who, alongside her best friend Kaga, has made a name for herself in the fight against the Abyssals. Here she projects an elegant and mature personality, and serves as an inspiration to Fubuki, who hopes to one day become her escort ship.
  • Big Eater: While all carriers are resource drains (true for any ship class above Light Cruiser really), Akagi's so far the only kanmusu who has this as a character trait in official media. Indeed in the 4-koma, Bauxite runs are nicknamed "Akagi's feeding time". Her infamy for being such a Bauxite hog stems from the fact that, unless an admiral somehow lucks out during construction, she's the first Standard Carrier he or she will get (due to her being a quest reward), and she will VERY quickly use the Bauxite stores (as it's used for maintaining her planes). The Awesome, but Impractical nature of carriers only makes the situation worse as she will burn through ammo and steel quickly once she levels up and gets hit. All things considered though, the biggest contribution to this is the fact that early on in game's life, there's a bug with her (and Kaga, but Akagi is much more known because she's obtainable through quest) resupplying, which results in the game treating all the planes needing to be resupplied (normally only ones that are shot down need to) even when only a single plane is shot down. Plane resupply eat bauxite. Akagi in her base form can have maximum of 73 planes. You can guess the rest.
    • Canonized in the anime, where Akagi's massive appetite is highlighted constantly whenever there's food involved. While Yamato and Kaga are shown to actually eat more per serving, the difference between them and Akagi is that while every shipgirl eats because they're hungry, Akagi eats because she just likes to eat.
  • Fish out of Temporal Water: A minor case. She doesn't know what the Ryuusei and Reppuu are, since both plane models were introduced after Akagi sunk relatively early in the war.
  • Last-Second Word Swap:
    • Her idle line.
Akagi: Um, Admiral? Is it mealtim-No! Is it time to begin the operation yet!?
    • Gets another one in Episode 6 of the Anime:
Akagi: First Carrier Group's Akagi, ready to ea-I mean cook!
  • Leaning on the Fourth Wall: Her MVP line has her noting that something (the MVP sign) is sparkling near her head.
  • The Paragon: To Fubuki in the anime. Her mature and elegant manners clash wildly with her also being a Big Eater, of course, though Fubuki doesn't see the latter as a negative at all.
  • Secret-Keeper: She already knew about Kaga's Dark Secret before the movie takes place.
  • Single-Issue Psychology: In the 4-koma, anything even remotely sounding like a reference to how she sunk at the Battle of Midway will turn Akagi into a panicked and quivering wreck (which can be righted with bauxite though).
  • Smug Super: A self-aware variant. She's very proud of her service with the 1st carrier division and boasts of her excellent air wing... but she's also aware that overconfidence was part of what doomed her the first time around, and reminds herself not to become complacent if she becomes MVP.
  • Sorry That I'm Dying: If she gets sunk.
Akagi: My apologies... Please... scuttle me with the torpedoes. note
  • Those Two Guys: With Kaga, since they form the 1st Carrier Division.
  • Took a Level in Badass: While Akagi is already powerful in her Kai form, she is even stronger once she gains her second remodel, as she become the first aircraft carrier shipgirl to have 5 equipments slot, effectively allowing her to field an extra aircraft squadron. Her E form also enables her to perform night attack given the right planes, albeit with reduced plane slots.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Rice and bauxite. She's usually seen with a bucketful of either.
  • Trauma Button: Getting surprised from above, since she was sunk after being taken by surprise by American dive bombers.
  • Understatement: Her docking line is this for her notoriously long docking time, which can reach up to an entire day if heavily damaged at high level.
Akagi (if docked while heavily damaged): It seems like it will take a little time to repair the flight deck.
  • We Have Become Complacent: She's apparently learned her lesson from Midway (where the Japanese were defeated in part because their previous victories had made them overconfident in their own air power and contemptuous of the American air force), since her MVP line has her caution the fleet against becoming complacent.

"I'm aircraft carrier Kaga. Are you my Admiral?... I have a fairly high expectation of you."

Kaga (named after the historical Kaga Province) is the personification of the Japanese aircraft carrier Kaga. She is Akagi's best friend and is known for her serious personality.

Like Akagi, she doesn't fit the normal Theme Naming for carriers because she wasn't originally intended as one. When Akagi's sister ship Amagi (also being converted into a carrier) was damaged beyond repair by the Great Kanto Earthquake, the Tosa-class battleship Kaga was the only other sufficiently large ship whose hull was far enough along in construction to be used as a replacement. Kaga's shorter, wider hull was considerably less suitable for an aircraft carrier, resulting in a variety of problems (see My Blood Runs Hot below for one of them).

In the anime, Kaga almost always appears with Akagi, though with the reorganization of the fleet she finds herself assigned to Mobile Unit Five, which unfortunately puts her in the same squad as Zuikaku. The two constantly butt heads as a result. In the movie, it is revealed that she used to be an Abyssal at some point and still recalls any of it.
  • Big Eater: Not mentioned as prominently as Akagi or Yamato, but there's a shot of her sitting next to Akagi with a very large serving of curry after Akatsuki and her sister ships won the curry competition in episode 6 of the first anime. Kaga's serving would be roughly the same size as Akagi's (Akagi had already consumed half of her plate).
  • Character Catchphrase: Her equipment line "yarimashita" ("I did it") really catches on with the fans, such that it's associated with her. Her other iconic lines include "I won't give up here" (air battle line) and "Don't lump me in with the 5th Carrier Division's kids" (battle start line).
  • Dark Secret: As much as Kaga doesn't want to admit it, she Was Once an Abyssal at some point.
  • Defrosting Ice Queen: In the anime, for Zuikaku. While she constantly belittles Zuikaku and her sister, in episode 8 she eventually admits that Zuikaku did a good job. By the time of the movie, she starts smiling much more.
  • Elite Mook: In the movie, she takes the form of a red-eyed Wo during her time as an Abyssal.
  • Evil Me Scares Me: She remembers her time as an Abyssal and is horrified by it.
  • Hidden Depths: Displayed by her skill at making towel-bunnies, which catches everyone by surprise. Apparently taught to her by Akagi, as a way to pass the time while in the bath. The movie also reveals that she's a former Abyssal with a Dark Secret.
  • Historical In-Joke: Her left-facing sidetail is a reference to the Real Life ship's funnel being on its left side.
  • Hope Bringer: while everyone else has a Heroic BSoD at the revelation in her exposition, her conduct is basically "It was terrible, but I'm living proof that it's reversible and we can get those we care about back".
  • I Feel Angry:
Kaga (if attacked): "It outrages me."
  • Image Song: Kaga Misaki (Translates as "Cape Kaga"). Requests for this track on the Jukebox had their fee waived during the last week of August 2015. (See Real Life Writes the Plot)
  • Legacy Character: Not Kaga herself, but the helicopter destroyer Kaga of the JMSDF is often portrayed as one to the in-game Kaga by fan artists. See Real Life Writes the Plot below.
  • Literal-Minded: One of her lines has her refuse the admiral's offer of a night battle. Some interpret this as the admiral asking for a certain Unusual Euphemism, which she instead misreads as being asked to deploy at night where carriers are useless.
  • Ms. Exposition: She knows the Dark Secret behind the existence of both Ship Girls and Abyssals. She even admits that she was once an Abyssal herself. Zuikaku finds out about it first, and Mutsuki takes it very badly.
  • My Blood Runs Hot: As revealed in the 4-koma, Kaga apparently has a higher-than-normal body temperature (the real Kaga's exhaust system was unable to get rid of exhaust gases properly, leading to heat building up in the interior of the ship, resulting in overheating of the flight deck and some crew quarters), so much so that all the other carriers think it's possible to use her as a replacement for the kotatsu heater.
  • Necessary Drawback: Can field the most planes in the whole game (before Intrepid) with a massive third slot (98, with a third slot of 46 planes, bigger than what some Light Carriers can field with all of their slots). Thus, she is instrumental when you need to have Air Superiority but as a result, she is also the most expensive carrier to maintain, even more than Big Eater Akagi. In a later update, the devs buffed Akagi's max firepower to compensate for her lower plane count. Some players also get frustrated when they perceive she is more likely to be heavily damaged, forcing the Admiral to retreat.
  • Not So Stoic: Occasionally, she let's her stoic mask slip. In the 4koma she gets very excited when seeing the combined monaka and ice cream dish created by Irako and Mamiya. Also shown in her marriage line.
Kaga: I... displaying emotions.. well.... Even I... right now, I'm extremely happy though...
  • Only Sane Man: Between Akagi to take care of her Bauxite eating, the Destroyers who are kids and need someone to look after them, and the rest of the classes who are usually out, most fanartists depict her as the one person who takes everything seriously.
  • Past-Life Memories: The only known Ship Girl (besides Kisaragi) to retain memories of her past life as an Abyssal.
  • Real Life Writes the Plot: On August 27, 2015, the second ship of the Izumo-class helicopter destroyer was launched and christened Kaga (name written in hiragana compared to her predecessor's kanji). For a limited time until the following maintenance, requests for her image song in the in-game jukebox were free. Her Kai Ni Go form also includes many Shout Outs her modern namesake, being ASW-focused, operating autogyros (the closest thing to helicopters available) and having her flight deck painted with the same helicopter landing area designators as on the JMSDF ship. Furthermore, she received her second remodel on August 27, 2020, a day later than planned, to coincide with the 6th anniversary of JS Kaga.
  • Slipknot Ponytail: Her damaged artwork for her Kai Ni forms has her sidetail get loose, showing that her natural hairstyle is as long as Akagi's.
  • The Stoic: Usually talks in a calm and even tone.
  • Sugar-and-Ice Personality: She's cold and aloof most of the time, but she shows some sweet side in some of her lines. The anime also shows her being more open around Akagi, and she also opens up for Zuikaku after the latter manages to prove her worth.
  • Those Two Guys: With Akagi.
  • Trauma Button: In the 4koma she gets sensitive when Maikaze enters the fleetnote  and when she hears that the 5th Carrier Division are comingnote .
  • Tsurime Eyes: Which add to her stoicism and seriousness.
  • Was Once a Man: Inverted; she's outright disgusted at her past life as an Abyssal, calling it a painfully horrible experience.
  • Weak, but Skilled: Her beef with the 5th Carrier Division is partly based on this.note

"I'm aircraft carrier Souryuu. Count me in when organizing a carrier task force!"

Souryuu (Blue/Green Dragon) is the personification of Japanese aircraft carrier Souryuu.
  • Ace Custom: Her second remodel comes with more powerful versions of regular planes, piloted by the Egusa Squadron pilots.
  • Divergent Character Evolution: Despite being historically different ship classesnote , in-game Souryuu and Hiryuu were fairly similar in both starting stats and character designs. Come their second remodels however, the differences between them became very pronounced, with Souryuu lagging behind her contemporary in Firepower, Armor, Evasion and Luck.
  • Girlish Pigtails: Easy to miss, considering her in-game art, but her appearance in the Anime confirms this, to contrast with Hiryuu's side ponytail.
  • Is It Something You Eat?: Her reaction when being asked about Midway in her library entry.
  • Those Two Guys: With Hiryuu, since they formed the 2nd Carrier Division and spent their wartime careers sailing together. And because Hiryuu was built to a modified Souryuu design, to the point that they're sometimes considered sister ships.
  • Took a Level in Badass: Like Hiryuu, her 2nd upgrade. She becomes second only behind Hiryuu and likewise, gains her equipment from Midway.
  • When She Smiles: Inverted; she loses the smile after her second remodel.

"I'm aircraft carrier Hiryuu. Leave the carrier battles to me, I can fight on against any and all adversity."

Hiryuu (Flying Dragon) is the personification of Japanese aircraft carrier Hiryuu.
  • Ace Custom: Her second remodel comes with more powerful versions of regular planes, piloted by the Tomonaga Squadron pilots.
  • Big Eater: Seems to be this, according to Ark Royal's 20:00 and 21:00 hourly line.
  • Born Lucky:
    • Her luck is second only to Zuikaku due to surviving the ambush that had devastated the rest of the carriers during the Battle of Midway, allowing her to salvage something of the situation by sinking Yorktown.
    • Her second remodel gave her a whooping 50 luck, equivalent to Zuikaku and Shigure at their second remodel, both of which had lasted much longer into the war than Hiryuu did.
  • Determinator: Refuses to surrender even if she's the last one standing, referencing how she did just that at Midway (being the only one who could even get planes into the air after the first strike left Akagi, Kaga and Souryuu dead in the water).
  • Divergent Character Evolution: Hiryuu and Souryuu start out remarkably similar both in-game stats and design, but come their second remodel, Hiryuu more or less leaves her contemporary in the dust, being superior in every way.
  • Dying Moment of Awesome: Her sinking line references Admiral Yamaguchi and captain's last conversation.
Hiryuu: I'm going to sink... Time to have a drink with the moon...
  • Those Two Guys: With Souryuu, due to the two sailing together as the 2nd Carrier Division. They're also sometimes considered sister ships, since Hiryu was built as a modified Soryu.
  • Took a Level in Badass: Her 2nd Upgrade, which reflects her fighting on Midway. Which give her a sudden boost of stats as well as giving her the Pre-Midway-era equipment.
  • "Well Done, Son" Guy: It seems the case with her last captain, Tamon Yamaguchi, who she affectionately calls Tamonmaru and keeps asking if he approves.
  • When She Smiles: While her normal expression in her second remodel is rather serious, Shibafu has drawn art of her smiling.

     The Shoukaku-Class

  • Class Change Level Reset: In their second remodel, they can change between their Standard form and her Armored form. However, since the change is considered a remodel for all practical purposes, not only does it cost a significant amount of resources and development material, the form change also resets their firepower, armor and anti-air stats to their base levels. Their firepower stat was hit especially hard from this form change since aircraft carriers start with zero firepower, though fortunately the level up bonuses on the hard stats they gain during remodeling mitigates this somewhat.
  • Infinity +1 Sword: Their second remodels turn them into, hands down, the best aircraft carriers in the game.
    • Shoukaku has the best firepower, and the second best health, armor, evasion and anti-air.
    • Zuikaku has the best anti-air, armor, evasion and health, and the second best firepower.
    • The jet aircraft they could operate qualifies as Infinity+1 Aircraft, as they have outstanding stats for a fighter-bomber, capable of performing initial airstrikes twice, increases shelling range to Long and are difficult to shot down in air combat.
  • Jack of All Stats: The introduction of the Aircraft Proficiency system during Summer 2015 played straight into their stats, as fighter planes became less dependent on plane slots, bombers became strong enough to cover up their comparatively poor base stats, and their evenly distributed plane slots excelled at keeping the planes from being completely shot down and losing their ranks. While they were still outclassed by specialized carriers such as Kaga and Hiryuu, high ranking planes allowed the Shoukaku-class to perform well for their long tenure in their regular Kai form.
  • Necessary Drawback: While their second remodels are undeniably strong, they also come with immense resource consumption, and take a massive amount of steel and ammo to remodel. Additionally, their second remodels each require a Prototype Flight Deck Catapult and a Blueprint, and have the highest level requirements in the gamenote . And of course, there's the fact that changing between the their Standard and Armored form costs an incredible amount of steel and resets their modernization bonuses.
  • Master of None: The Shoukaku-class carriers possess lower consumption and better evasion than Akagi, Kaga and Taihou, and better plane count than all of the other Standard Carriers. However, before the carrier planes were able to obtain ranks, their slot distribution were considered poor, being spread out evenly as opposed to other carrier classes with more specialized slots and having relatively low Firepower compared to the rest of the Standard Carriers.
  • Master of All: Their second remodel gives them stats to rival Kaganote  and Hiryuunote , who were the strongest in their respective fields, and allowing them to outrange all other carriersnote .
  • Rare Random Drop: Notoriously hard to get, since Shoukaku was originally an event reward from the Spring 2013 event, and Zuikaku was a random drop from boss nodes from the same event.
  • Super Mode: They have an alternative Kai Ni Kou form which turns them into an Armored Aircraft Carrier, which redistributes their plane slots to be similar to Taihou's and gives them increased durability and firepower. Additionally, they gain the ability to launch planes at moderate damage, as well as the ability to launch jet aircraft.

"I'm Shoukaku, the first of the Shoukaku-type carriers. I will try my best with Zuikaku to try and live up to the names of my seniors in the first and second aviation divisions."

Shoukaku (Flying Crane) is the personification of the Japanese aircraft carrier Shoukaku.
  • Born Unlucky: In the 4-koma, Shoukaku is such a huge magnet for misfortune that Kaga was horrified to learn she'd have to stay in the same dorm with her.
  • Cool Big Sis: Tries to makes sure Zuikaku doesn't bother the Admiral so much.
  • Infinity +1 Sword: Her Armored Carrier form gives her the absolute highest firepower of all carriers, and allows her to easily outdamage the Yamato-class battleships, while only having slightly less defense than Zuikaku.
  • Informed Flaw: Despite her talk of getting injured easily, which would imply having bad luck (as shown in the 4-koma), her Luck Stat in the game is average, with her Kai Ni having an above-average 20 luck. Not only that, at Kai her luck cap is the same as Zuikaku's at 89, and her evasion is actually higher than Zuikaku's when both are at level 150 (albeit by just 2 points).
    • This is partly due to her historical ship being built with better protection compared to the previous carriers, which had helped her to survive the serious damage she had sustained. Additionally, she was the first carrier in the IJN to be installed with an air radar, which gave early warning to her crew to purge the avgas lines in time to avoid the catastrophic fire that had doomed many aircraft carriers during the Battle of the Santa Cruz Islands.
  • Planning for the Future Before the End: In her marriage line, no less! Based on her being sunk in the Battle of the Philippine Sea, part of the Marianas Campaign.
Shoukaku: "Thank you, Admiral. Giving me these planes that I've never seen before, my gratitude is overflowing. Maybe... just maybe... if my wish comes true, after the Marianas, we can stay together..."
  • Took a Level in Badass: Her second remodel turns her from an aircraft carrier that has a borderline gimmicky even distribution of plane slots with comparatively poor stats compared to Akagi and Kaga into a Master of All aircraft carrier that could give all others a serious run for the money.

"Second of the Shoukaku-class aircraft carriers, the younger sister Zuikaku. The lucky carrier, you say? That's not it, I just fight with all my might.. As long as I have planes, I won't lose!"

Zuikaku (Fortunate Crane) is the personification of the Japanese aircraft carrier Zuikaku.
  • A-Cup Angst: In the anime, she is visibly upset when Ooi called out her flight-deck chest.
  • Berserk Button: Turkeys, coming from the infamous "Great Marianas Turkey Shoot", a Curb-Stomp Battle in favor of the Americans where Zuikaku lost a good chunk of her air wing and escaped as the Sole Survivor of the fleet carriers that participated. She even gets pissed at Hiryuu over the Christmas turkey, and Akizuki also ends up becoming cautious about it.
  • Big "SHUT UP!": Bellows out one in her 20:00 Hourly Line:
    Zuikaku: 2000, Eight o'clock! I don't really care, but...Kawau— Sendai, shut up!
  • Boisterous Bruiser: Loves boasting about her being a lucky ship.
Zuikaku: "Yay! Did you see that! That's the true power of the 5th CarDiv! The Goddess of Luck is with me!"
  • Born Lucky: Her base form has the highest luck amongst all aircraft carriers at 40 (until it is matched by Hiryuu Kai, but Zuikaku remains the luckiest by 2 points upon remodel). She lasted the longest of Japan's fleet carriers and managed to escape the Great Marianas Turkey Shoot with her life, unlike Shokaku and Taihou. She was sunk while being used as a decoy in the Battle of Cape Engano.
    • Her second remodel puts her luck at 50, which is equivalent to Shigure and finally puts her at par to Hiryuu at her second remodel after being out-lucked by the latter for a little over a year.
  • Girlish Pigtails:
  • Heroic BSoD: She doesn't take Kaga's Dark Secret about the Ship Girls and Abyssals very well.
  • Infinity +1 Sword: Her Armored Carrier form give her unparalleled defense and anti-air strength, while still maintaining superb offensive power second only to Shoukaku.
  • Just a Kid: While Kaga is dismissive of the 5th Carrier Division as the whole, she's especially severe toward Zuikaku mostly because Zuikaku is the runt of the standard carriers at the time. Ironically, Zuikaku would end her career as Japan's most experienced carrier, being the last of Japan's Dwindling Party of pre-war fleet carriers.
  • Meaningful Name: Due to her real life counterpart having survived numerous battles throughout Japan's World War II campaign, moreso as one of those involved in the Attack on Pearl Harbor.
  • Third-Person Person: In most of her lines.
  • Those Two Guys: With Shoukaku, which form the 5th Carrier Division or with Zuihou as seen in fanarts due that they share the same 1st word in their names and as part of the new 1st Carrier Division.
  • Took a Level in Badass: Her second remodel turns her from an aircraft carrier that was ridiculed for being as inexperienced as turkeys throughout her career with comparatively poor stats into a formidable aircraft carrier with outstanding armor, evasion and anti-air, allowing her to stand against even the fiercest of adversaries.
    • It is even reflected in her C Gs, Growing from the inexperienced carrier with Girlish Pigtails, to the Sole Survivor of the Kido Butai, and the last of Japan's fleet carriers (barring the Amagi-class), to participate and sink in Battle.
  • Tsundere: For Kaga, at least in the anime.

"Yes... I am Taihou. Thank you for your reception. Admiral... I shall bring victory to you and your task force!"

Taihou (Great Phoenix) is the personification of the Japanese aircraft carrier Taihou.
  • Automatic Crossbows: Complete with labeled magazines and magazine holder flight deck.
  • Born Unlucky: Dethrones Mutsu as the bad luck queen, with a luck that starts at 2 and only goes up to 39 at Kai. At least Mutsu was able to actually sail around and do things in the interwar period (she served as fleet flagship during exercises and helped in the relief efforts for the Great Kanto Earthquake, among other things), and participated in actions like Midway and the Eastern Solomons, even if she never got to the actual action. Taihou's first action after working up was the Battle of the Phillipine Sea, where her inexperienced crew managed to lose her to a single torpedo hit- exactly the sort of thing that, as an armored carrier, she was designed to shrug off.
  • Composite Character: Her artist has revealed in a tweet that Taihou Kai is a reference to a historically planned, but never built, ship that'd be the successor of Taihou and would be correcting her flaws. (In case you're wondering, the design in question is the project G-15, commonly nicknamed as Taihou Kai) Taihou herself historically never got a chance of refitting.
  • Jack of All Stats: Before the Shoukakus got their Master of All second remodels, she had an excellent all-round balance. She wasn't the best at anything, but being second in almost everything, such as air wing size inferior only to Kaga and firepower inferior only to Hiryuu, made her a solid pick for most situations, whether as a main or supporting carrier.
  • Necessary Drawback: She can launch planes even at moderate damage, has the second highest firepower, second best plane count and highest anti-air (making her excellent with bombers and fighters) but her evasion is the lowest of the CVs, forcing her to tank hits more often. She also has the highest fuel consumption (which also makes her the most expensive carrier to repair) and above average ammo consumption.
  • Trauma Button: Very concerned about her fuel tank whenever she gets damagedHistorical reason and turkey shooting, both events happening in the Battle of the Philippine Sea.
Taihou: "Argh! M-my fuel! Gotta make sure it doesn't ignite!"
  • When She Smiles: Her remodeled sprite features a confident and very cute smile.

     The Unryuu-Class
The final class of Imperial Japanese aircraft carriers. Didn't historically get to do much, as Japan was running desperately low on supplies by the time they entered service and couldn't afford to outfit them with proper air wings.
  • Necessary Drawback: The Unryuu-class is the cheapest Remodeled Fleet Carrier in the game, using only slightly more Fuel and Ammo than a Hiyou-class and having offensive stats comparable to Akagi and Kaga. However, they also have the lowest plane count and the lowest durability among the Fleet Carriers. That, and there's the fact that they all need blueprints in order to remodel in the first place.
  • Paper Talisman: Much like Ryuujou and the Hiyou-class, their planes are basically shikigami, being onmyoji (Katsuragi with an archer twist).
  • The Pirates Who Don't Do Anything: The historical Unryuus were carriers that never flew planes, which is why their shipgirl counterparts are so inexperienced. For what it's worth, the Abyssals are giving them plenty of on-the-job training.
  • Sheltered Aristocrat: Because of their lack of historical battle experience, they often comment on how they don't usually go out sorteing or get fitted with equipment. Their dresses are elaborate and pretty impractical for battle, they express happiness and surprise when receiving planes, they get excited when they go into battle along with everyone else. One can say that this is the Unryuu-class's charm.
  • Vapor Wear: With the possible exception of Katsuragi, the Unryuus are clearly wearing nothing but their own skin under those short skirts.

"Unryuu-class aircraft carrier, Unryuu, has arrived. Admiral, it's nice to meet you."

Unryuu (Cloud Dragon) is the personification of the Japanese aircraft carrier Unryuu.
  • Aloof Big Sister: A product of her personality, her relationship with her sisters is somewhat distant. Amagi calls her Nee-sama - while this can be chalked up to Amagi's overt politeness, the way Katsuragi favors Amagi more supports the notion that Unryuu's not really open with her affection.
  • Braids of Action: A single long braid at the back.
  • Curtains Match the Window: White to Silver-gray hair and eyes
  • Magikarp Power: Downplayed; despite her un-remodeled version not even coming with planes, maximizing her stats makes quite useful in early maps like World 1 or 2. Once remodeled however, she comes with a strong set of veteran mid to high-tier planes.
  • Mystical White Hair: A fleet girl with long, white, braided hair, and is portrayed more as a mage compared to most of the Standard Carriers. See also below.
  • Mythical Motifs: Of course, dragons, which she somewhat resembles, and the only one who show the motif as opposed to other "dragon" carriers note . She also takes on the "cloud" part of her name!
  • Nonstandard Character Design: At least in terms of aesthetics. Unlike everyone released before her, she isn't some form of archer; in fact, she resembles a Final Fantasy character more than anything else. This took nearly everybody by surprise; it was expected that she would strongly resemble Souryuu and Hiryuu given that the real-life Unryuu-class utilized Hiryuu's hull design and Souryuu's propulsion system (this might be due to the fact that the artist for Unryuu is the same person who did Ryuujou).
    • In the 4koma episode dedicated to her, Fubuki and her gang initially mistook her as a Chinese Hermit until Shigure comes in to explain who and what she actually is. This is how different she looks.
  • Our Dragons Are Different: Her upgraded art. Saying the fandom likes to add green horns to her as well is an understatement. The official art "merely" gives her what appear to be green lightning bolts hovering in a horn-like position just above her head.
  • Sword Cane: Her banner-staff actually consists of a pair of swords fitted end to end to resemble such a staff. However, they aren't used in battle and they only serve to perpetuate the class' equipment theme: Shinto ritual implements. Unryuu has Japanese swords (due to their reccurent use in some rituals), Amagi has Kagura Suzu (used in Kagura dance) and Katsuragi has an Azusa Yumi (also used in some rituals).
  • Wind Is Green: Takes on the general green motif associated with dragons in common Japanese mythology.

"I'm Amagi, an Unryuu-class Carrier. Thanks for your recruitment, Admiral. Amagi will concentrate!"

Amagi (after Mt. Amagi, literally "Heavenly Castle") is the personification of the Japanese aircraft carrier Amagi.
  • Feminine Women Can Cook: She's one of the most feminine shipgirl, and her cooking is showing that. In her hourlies, she's cooking for the admiral and offers to teach them. In Katsuragi's hourlies, she got some of practice's result and likes it very much. The way Katsuragi got thoughtful when finding this out and her admiration on Amagi, it seems Katsuragi make this same assumption.
  • Stripperific: Averted with her base form wearing a full body kimono but on remodeling she gains a outfit much like Unryuu's that falls into to this. Her base form's damaged illustration shows that she's wearing the stripperific outfit underneath her kimono, and just discards the kimono when remodeled.
    • An explanation as to why her CG artwork is depicted that way, as an anonymous commenter on the game's Wikia/Fandom puts it:
A FANDOM User: To wit, Amagi in real life was camouflaged and sealed away in Kure, never given planes. This is represented with her heavy clothing and packed away staff. The remodel represents a major "if" where she may have been allowed to sortie as a combat-capable fully equipped Unryuu-class carrier. Also, her damaged CG is probably a reference to her capsizing.
  • Third-Person Person: She might be competing with Haruna in this regard.
  • Yamato Nadeshiko: She got the appearance, the temperament, and the skills. It's no coincidence the only one carrier wearing a furisode would be a classical Japanese beauty.

"I'm Katsuragi, the third ship of the Unryuu-class Carriers! Eh? 'A floating anti-air gun platform'? I-It's not like that...! What are you saying!"

Katsuragi (after Mt. Katsuragi note ) is the personification of Japanese aircraft carrier Katsuragi.
  • A-Cup Angst: Comes up in one of her hourly lines. The Fubuki 4-koma hits her with this even harder when she's compared to the more busty members of the Kagerou-class destroyers.
Katsuragi: Huh? Compared with my sister, the part that needs to stick out do not stick out, so I have to eat...? N-now you have done it! Any last words?!
  • Born Lucky: Has the highest max luck out of the Unryuu sisters as she was the only completed Unryuu-class carrier to survive the entire war. Despite the fact that she was completed at the very end of the war and, like Amagi, she was never used in active combat.
  • Embarrassing Nickname: Being called 'Anti-Aircraft Gun Platform' is to her what being called a hotel is to Yamato. Despite being designed as a carrier, Japan's aircraft shortages meant she never carried any actual planes, leaving her AA guns as her only real weapons. Katsuragi is still a little sore about never being able to fulfill her intended role.
  • Fangirl: Towards Zuikaku, shown in her 11.00 AM hourly. It's because Zuikaku was the only Standard Carrier left standing (aside from Katsuragi's sisters) when Katsuragi was completed.
Katsuragi: Eh? What, it's true though! After all it's Zuikaku-san, the one I'm admiring! Isn't that wonderful...! I also like her camouflage, mine also matches hers!
  • Ignored Confession: Played straight, then subverted in one go with her marriage line:
Katsuragi: What is it, Admiral? Can you see that I'm quite busy here, because this engine requires a lot of maintenance... what... this is... Thank you! I...
  • Kimono Fanservice: She wears a similar one to her sisters which leaves little to the imagination under a full body kimono like Amagi in her base form, although she wears it loose. Perhaps because she was used as a repatriation ship, much like Houshou, to bring Japanese soldiers home.
  • Motor Mouth: She talks long and a lot. Her voiceclips are about twice or three times as long from the average voiceclips, as she sometimes ends up getting distracted from whatever she's talking about.
  • Running Gag: Being referred to as an Anti-Air Gun Platform. As seen above, her introduction quote says it all.
    • Got Me Doing It: And much like the "Yamato Hotel" gag, she's prone to this:
Katsuragi: Enemy spotted! All AA gun... Wait that's wrong!!! Attack force, covering force, prepare to deploy!
  • Stop Poking Me!: Both versions of her 3rd secretary lines are along these lines, as well has outright implying the Admiral is trying to cop a feel on her and she doesn't like it.
Katsuragi (base): Wha... That's not my hanga... What are you doing anyway!? What do you want, you idiot!!
Katsuragi (kai): I told you that's not my hangar! How many times did I-uuu... This time I'm not forgiving you!
  • Sole Survivor: Out of all of the Unryuu-class. Unryuu and Amagi had sunk during the war (the latter at the last moments, though) and the rest were scrapped before being completed.
  • Tsundere: Most of her quotes portray her as this. See examples given above.
