Blog: Applied Phlebotinum Blog
"I'm Clawshrimpy, This is Applied Phlebotinum, and welcome to the idiocy that is, Cosmic Era"
Clawshrimpy, Applied Phlebotinum Gundam SEED video blog reviews

Not to be confused with the trope of the same name.

The Applied Phlebotinum blog is a series of formerly podcasts, now video blogs, created by an individual troper called Clawshrimpy. His first work was a Podcast of his review of Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann where he looked at it in 3 episode chunks. He chose to continue in the form of video blogs, and has moved on to review other Science Fiction and Mecha anime, such as Gundam SEED, in a similar format, it's sort of like "Sci Fi Debris except for Mecha anime".

You can find his blog at http://appliedphlebotinum.wordpress.comand he is also on blip.tv.

The Applied Phlebotinum Blog provides examples of:

  • Accentuate the Negative: Clawshrimpy is a Caustic Critic after all.
  • Alternate Character Interpretation: Clawshrimpy views Lacus Clyne as a not-so-subtle attempt to put a Macross-style Idol Singer into a Gundam series.
  • Berserk Button: Clawshrimpy has several of these, depending on what series he's reviewing.
  • Bias Steamroller: his Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann review was full of this, considering the unending comparisons to GaoGaiGar.
  • Caustic Critic: his modus operendi
  • Couch Gag: the SEED review video blogs have two a piece. one at the beginning where a clip will play followed by Clawshrimpy snarking at it and one at the end, ranging from having Uzumi quoting the Neutral Planet Ambassador from Futurama, to playing the sad walking away music from the Ang Lee Incredible Hulk film over Nicol and Tolle's death scenes.
  • 8.8: A possible inversion, Clawshrimpy stated that he recieved much hatemail for his rating of 4 out of 10 for Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, but funnily enough, he gave Gundam SEED the same score. and given how fair he was in the SEED review to the parts that worked. (See Memetic Badass and Good Troi Episode sub entries below.) It's probably not as bad as it sounds.
  • Good Troi Episode: Clawshrimpy was pretty positive reguarding Andrew Waltfeld, and thinks the Desert Arc was not too bad, aside from Sai being mistreated.
  • Growing the Beard: Clawshrimpy's Gundam SEED reviews are much improved from the Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann podcasts.
  • Gushing About Shows You Like: Clawshrimpy pretty much admits his GaoGaiGar Retrospective is this. however, it's because someone e-mailed in and asked him to review something he liked.
  • Idiot Plot: Clawshrimpy thinks that both sides of the war in Gundam SEED are equally impotent.
    • Clawshrimpy REALLY starts to harp this about Azrael's use of the nukes in the final 5 episodes of Gundam SEED. at one point he played a clip of Andrew Waltfeld explaining "the role of any long range nuclear weapon is to serve as a deterrant." and then he played a clip of Azrael asking what the point of stockpiling nukes is if you won't use them.
      • He overlooks that the EA nukes have already failed to be an effective deterrence against ZAFT. Azrael was partially right.
      • The first five episodes of Gundam SEED Destiny is allready beginning to slowly crush his will. Between Djbril making him facepalm to Shinn and his friends not realizing there are fellow Coordinators on Earth and viewing Earth's destruction as "a good thing."
Clawshrimpy: I could end the review here! But I'm just getting started.
  • Jerkass: Clawshrimpy views most Coordinators as this, though Kira seems to get it the worst from his criticisms.
    • more recently, It's been less aimed at Kira and has directed a majority of this at Azrael and Patrick Zala. Possibly justified.
  • Memetic Badass: Clawshrimpy believes Andrew Waltfeld and Mu La Flaga to be this.
    • As of the 31-35 Gundam SEED review video, looks like Sai has made his badass list.
  • Memetic Mutation: played with at the beginning Couch Gag for the SEED 31-35 review video, to snark at the "Nicol loved the Piano!" scene.
Clawshrimpy: Got that out of our system? No need to retreat to any hackned internet memes, or anything like that? After all, we know that red robots move 3 times faster, we know that Captain Quattro, he is A CHAR, we know why Roy Fokker won't be able to enjoy his Pineapple Salad, we know why not to go into random bathroom stalls, because I was the asshole all these years, 2 FAST 2 FURIOUS, and ROW ROW FIGHT THE POWAH. Dang that was meta as hell, though obviously falling short of Rolo.
  • MST3K Mantra: Clawshrimpy deconstructs this trope, in the sense that he tries to encourage people to think about what's going on in a given plot, rather than accept whatever crazy thing is being done, and not blindly accept it because "Well it's a show with Humongous Mecha, it doesn't need to make sense!" which is what Clawshrimpy tended to be harsh on Gurren Lagann for, in his mind, "stretching Willing Suspension of Disbelief too far, even for Super Robot" and it's why his commentary was so biting reguarding silly plot points like most things Azrael and Patrick Zala does in Gundam SEED. the GaoGaiGar review however, plays it straight, with Clawshrimpy trying to respond to the people who call GaoGaiGar bad because of it's Monster of the Week "kiddie" nature, and Clawshrimpy tries to point out it DOES have strong Character Development and has some merit in terms of writing.
  • New Powers as the Plot Demands: his biggest criticism of the mecha battles in Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann
    • He feels the same about Kira's SEED Mode powers.
  • Nightmare Fuel: He seemed a little grossed out over Nicol's exploding head.
  • Oh Crap: Clawshrimpy has one of these in the first arc of Gundam SEED when he puts two and two together and realizes what's about to happen to the shuttle full of refugees, once Kira and his friends join the military for good.
Clawshrimpy: After all, nothing bad is gonna happen to the poor civillians or anything, especially now that all the major characters decided to stay on-board! *laughs half-heartendly* ...This is gonna be bad, isn't it.
  • Punctuated! For! Emphasis!: Clawshrimpy delivers one in reguards to Azrael's plan to use nukes against the PLANTS despite the Earth officials not wanting to go through with it, in the vlog for Gundam SEED's last 5 episodes.
    Clawshrimpy: THEY. ARE. DETERRANTS.
  • Romantic Plot Tumor: Clawshrimpy seems to lose interest quickly in character relationships. He felt the Cagali/Athrun Ship Tease episode "War for Two" was just filler.
  • Scare Campaign: Clawshrimpy expressed disdain when Only Sane Man Chairman Clyne lost office to Patrick Zala because Patrick Zala used The Bloody Valentine Tragedy this way.
  • Shout Out: Clawshrimpy seems to be a big fan of Sci Fi Debris.
  • Shown Their Work: Clawshrimpy provided some very good information about the Brave Series in his introduction to GaoGaiGar.
  • Technobabble: Clawshrimpy has brought up Kira's keyboarding and jargon a few times.
Clawshrimpy: This episode opens with Kira typing away at his keyboard, spitting out numbers, because god forbid that's why we tune into SEED every week.
  • Too Dumbto Live: Clawshrimpy feels this way about the Gurren Brigade.
    • Not to mention the Earth Alliance at times.
      • Gundam SEED Destiny 1-5 has Clawshrimpy saying this about nearly everyone from the start, up to and including Djbril's cowardly propaganda plan, to Shinn's friends saying that Earth's destruction will make things better for the PLANTS.
