During his career in the RAF, he found himself alone in his fighter against six German bombers (each which had three pilots). Dahl didn't let himself give in to fear and managed to shoot down one of them, which led to the others fleeing. He was darn lucky but it ended up being much better that he held his ground rather than trying to run immediately.
