* GoodIsNotSoft: Just like in the manga, Yami Yugi is technically a good guy, but he does things such as breaking someone's mind because they had it coming. Which is a bit better than in the manga where he actually killed people in his Shadow Games.

* GameOfNim: Dark Yugi challenges the school's AlphaBitch Kaoruko Himekoji to one, using misère nim. Instead of matchsticks, they use the flowers as matchsticks.on the latter's person. As usual, Dark Yugi pulls a come-from-behind victory--while his opponent focuses entirely on the bouquet she was holding, she forgets she has an extra flower in her hair. As an added element of HoistByHisOwnPetard, Yugi figures out that it's Kaourko who attacked and chloroformed his friend Miho; the rose petals he found near Miho fell from the exact same rose he pulled to win the game.
-->Dark Yugi: I said all the flowers you had. I never said just the bouquet.

** For an example related to the actual card game, we have Field Power Bonuses, where a monster gains additional Attack Points based on the field it's summoned on. In the manga, they were given a proper introduction in Duelist Kingdom and were completely absent for Yugi's duel against Joey, as well as both of Yami's duels against Kaiba. In this series, every duel utilizes this mechanic, complete with a dueling mat with a variety of different locations to summon monsters on.

** As a Duel Monster example, the Darkness Dragon (Blackland Fire Dragon overseas) undergoes this. In the manga, Yugi uses it to beat Jonouchi's Zombie, a duel that he wins, and in the second anime, it outright wins the duel for Yugi. Here, it's used by Jonouchi to beat Honda, who now has the Zombie; in this case, the Zombie wins due to an added field bonus.

* DisappointedByTheMotive: Yami Yugi is more than a little peeved to find out that the PhonyPsychic Kokurano has caused dangerous accidents after predicting them beforehand, all so he could pretend that he could predict the future and have people pay attention to him.

** Yugi's Devil Dragon (Koumori Dragon) only appeared once in the manga, where it was captured and taken control of by Pegasus before being defeated by Black Magician. It gets a second appearance in Duel Monsters, against a mind-controlled Keith Howard, but it's still easily defeated. Here, it actually gets a brief moment to shine in the duel against Daimon, where it takes out three of his monsters in succession; while this worked in Daimon's favor due to making his Zombiemaster more powerful, it's still more than the canon Devil Dragon ever did.

** The generic Zombie card that Jonouchi had in his duel against Yugi is now in Honda's possession, and due to the existence of field bonuses, its placement in the field actually lets it defeat Jonouchi's monster (ironically, the Darkness Dragon (Blackland Fire Dragon) that Yugi beat him with in the manga). Jonouchi is just bound to lose this one, it seems.
