A Boy And His Monster Husband

Tomari Hinowa is an Ordinary High-School Student- that is, until he's called down to the faculty room of his school one morning. The teacher awaiting him tells him that "the one he will marry" has been decided...

...Only for it to be revealed that his spouse will be Kanenogi, a strange bear-like creature that chose him from an old yearbook. Gifted a house by the government, Tomari begins his new life as the wife to this being- although he may not be the only member of his class that has been married off...

And so starts Jingai-san no Yome (人外さんの嫁, lit. "Non-Human Creature Wife"), a Yonkoma manga written by Yu Aikawa and illustrated by Akiwo Yasaka which began serialization in Zero Sum Online in 2016. An anime adaptation began airing on October 2, 2018.

Jingai-san no Yome contains examples of:

  • Ambiguous Gender: Most, if not all, of the monster characters fall into this. Neutral pronouns are used for Kanenogi primarily, although whether this is an indicator of their gender or simply due to them being a completely nonhuman creature is unknown.
  • Animals Lack Attributes: Tomari notes that technically, Kanenogi is naked all the time. Presumably, their fur covers everything (assuming anything is even there).
  • Berserk Button: Do not take off Fuwai’s hat unless you want to be cursed.
  • Bite of Affection: Kanenogi tends to chew on Tomari’s head as a sign of affection.
  • Extreme Omnivore: Kanenogi seems to prefer concrete to actual food.
  • Happily Married: Tomari has some hesitations about being married to Kanenogi at first. As the series progresses, he starts enjoying his time with Kanenogi.
  • Identical Twin ID Tag: Tetsukasa’s husbands are easily identifiable by the color of their hair. Roku has dark purple hair while Nana has light purple hair.
  • Love at First Sight: Ichiya for his creature, Tsukitsuka. In a reversal to usual events, he begged them to pick him as a bride.
  • The Reveal: The manga eventually explains a bit of what's going on: these aren't intended to be marriages, wealthy Japanese families are adopting minor Kami into their families as a form of legal tax evasion since the government has a bunch of tax loopholes for families with multiple species. Everything else has been a massive misunderstanding.
  • Talking with Signs: Like Kanenogi and Fuwai, Tsukitsuka can’t verbally talk. However, they implement signs as a means of communication.
