And The Fandom Rejoiced / Shin Megami Tensei

Go To

  • With Shin Megami Tensei IV:
    • Atlus gave the game a speedy localization turnaround of two months.
    • To those that hated him in Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey, the player can finally beat up Mastema in the Law route's New Game Plus.
    • SMT IV got its own spinoff in the form of Apocalypse.
      • The partner system has been refined to where you can now choose your partner. And one of those partners? The ghost of Navarre, an Advertised Extra from the original. Furthermore, sick of the focus on the Abrahamic religions? Merkabah and Lucifer refuse to give the polytheistic religions recognition, leading to them forming their own faction.
      • The return of YHWH as the final boss.
      • The final DLC features the return of the original Hero, Aleph, and the Demi-fiend, who form a team with Flynn to fight the mysterious Recurring Extra Stephen. It would later be revealed that all of the DLC, including this one, will be localized, which is particularly notable in that if one doesn't count a possible cameo in Nocturne, this is the first international appearance of Aleph, whose game was never localized.
      • On Thursday, April 14, it was announced that it would be localized in NA as Shin Megami Tensei IV: Apocalypse.
  • Getting tired of Persona games? The first Shin Megami Tensei game came to the US for the first time through iOS!
  • Raidou Kuzunoha? The Digital Devil Saga games? Persona 4? Nocturne? All finally on PSN!
    • The Quantum Digital Devil Saga novels are getting localized.
  • The Nintendo Switch is getting a main SMT game celebrating the 25th anniversary. Not only is the trailer beautiful, but at the end, we get a shot of the Shin Megami Tensei IV: Apocalypse Odin in glorious HD.
  • Well, it's been nearly three years and still no word on SMTV...hm? Nintendo Direct Mini: Partner Showcase, huh? Well, this last announcement better be a good one...eh!? A Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne HD remaster!? I mean...that's neat and all, but...wait. A new journey is about to begin? HOLY SHIT, SHIN MEGAMI TENSEI V IS FINALLY COMING!? IN 2021!?! AT LAST, THE WAIT IS OVER!
    • The initial announcement of the Nocturne remaster came with the news that it would be based on the Maniax Chronicle version with Raidou Kuzunoha instead of Dante from the Devil May Cry series. Disappointing but understandable given the licensing iss- wait, Dante IS going to be in the remaster as DLC?! It's about to get crazy!
    • Nocturne HD finally gets a Western release date, and a PC port!
  • Almost three years after it's release and after months of speculation and rumors, Shin Megami Tensei V would get another chance to shine with an Updated Re-release subtitled Vengeance with new content like over forty new demons and a different story path, and that this version will be available on all modern platforms! After it's official announcement in the Partner Showcase, Atlus uploaded a Dev Spotlight as a preview of what's being added:
    • Demons now have a Unique Skill alongside their other skills to not only buff them but to make each demon more unique and there are also combination attacks, including one with three of the Frost demons!
    • The new demon faction, the Qadištu, is revealed to be lead by Lilith, who was just another demon in the original game, and she and the rest of the quartet have a new design created by Masauki Doi!
    • The new human character, Yoko Hiromine, isn't just your ally but an actual party member the likes of Nemissa and is implied to have some sort of connection to the Qadištu!
    • Not only does the video show a few of the demons returning in this version, including underutilized ones like Cherub and Ifrit, but a new Jack Frost variant named Nahobihoo can be recruited!
    • As expected, the DLC in the original version is part of the base game but there are also two new packs of DLC. The first one revolves around Dagda from Apocalypse (and by that we mean it's the same Dagda from that continuity) and Konohana Sakuya who is more well known as Yukiko's Persona but diehard fans know her as a major entity from the Tokyo Revelation OVA!
    • Finally, during the Q&A at the end, director Shigeo Komori revealed that the original version had to leave out a lot of ideas that the various teams came up with during development, which became a source of frustration for them, and states that the driving force for this version is to implement some of those ideas and to make the definitive experience of Shin Megami Tensei V!
    • It's clear that the fandom were anticipating this release for awhile to the point that the announcement trailer has the third highest view count on the Official Atlus West Youtube channel! To put that in perspective, the only two videos above it is the announcement trailer for Persona 5 Royal and the opening of Persona 4 Golden, the latter being over a decade old! The fact that Vengeance is receiving the amount of hype comparable to Persona is incredible considering that said sub-series infamously overshadows the main series to the point that later entries dropped the Shin Megami Tensei moniker.
