Storms as narrative metaphor

  • It's wonderful how closely the timeline of a thunderstorm aligns with a narrative tension-and-release structure. You start out with a Heat Wave stressing everyone out as the pressure builds up (introduction to the imminent threat), with everyone simultaneously dreading the climax and wishing it was over with. People either prepare for the storm, run away, or stubbornly ignore it (the hero's reaction to the Call to Adventure). Then the storm breaks; Cue the Rain, Dramatic Thunder, lightning, all the hallmarks of an epic confrontation (climax). Finally, as suddenly as it started, it's over — there's damage, but people can rebuild and recover (Dénouement). Cue the Sun lighting up a rainbow of hope for the future.
