Chapter 19: Out Of The River And Into The Maus Trap

The chapter begins with Saori telling Miho to go ahead. Yukari is, quite naturally, impressed with Miho, and the scene with Anglerfish Team approving follows.

Yukari asks for Saori's help with the telescopic rangefinder,so she can give orders to the other teams when they support Miho. As Oarai returns fire (with Hippo Team's complaint about the lack of a turret on the StuG reduced to an aside), Yukari is determined to buy some time.

Erika, fitting her often more mean-spirited behavior in the manga, derisively says that actions like this are why she loathes Miho. By contrast, Maho's normally expressionless face has a slight smile in this scene, as if she's pleased with Miho's decision.

The enemy tanks get within 2200 meters of Oarai, and Yukari notices the Hetzer's failed ambush from afar. Once again, Turtle Team gets the short end of the stick.

The enemy tanks close another 100 meters, and Miho, with the freshmen safe, starts their escape, learning that Rabbit Team is moving again. Yukari has another monologue, in which she says that she may not think there's any meaning to winning or losing, but there's no better reason to win than to prove Miho's style of tankery right and show everyone that the path they walked was not wrong. This is one of the better monologues by Yukari here.

Erika notes how much Oarai is running away, while Maho infers that they escaped to the town. Turtle Team rejoining the main force, the destruction of the bridge and the relocation to the urban area happen as Miho discusses them. Some Black Forest tankers complain about the bridge destruction, but Erika calls for radio silence, since she's in the middle of tactics. She thinks to herself that Oarai is walking straight to their doom.

When the Maus arrives, it seemingly defeats Mallard team without the Char firing a shot or having a chance to escape, and the chapter ends with Miho ordering a retreat.

Next Installment: Miho must defeat the Maus if she is to have any hope of defeating Black Forest.
