Chapter 37: What Might Be
Verin tells Rand what little she’s learned about the Portals, forcing him to bullshit his way through where they should go, which includes places with toxic air, and places that their arrival will likely tear apart the very reality of. Of course, there’s no way that will actually happen, but it’s good to have this threat level as a reason why they won’t just use these things all the time from now on.

And with that, the rest of the chapter is pretty much Jordan saying “Holy crap, there are big fans of this thing. Well, here’s some Fanfic Fuel for you all.” Rand sees several alternate lives he might have had, and so does everyone else, though we don’t see them, and finally they arrive back in the main world, at Toman’s Head…four months later. Whoops.

It’s a weird experience reading this chapter, as it’s basically Robert Jordan writing AU fanfic of his own work. And to steal another line from Mark Oshrio, I’ll be very disappointed in the fans if there isn’t a metric ton of actual fanfic spun off from it. Plus, they all end with the Dark One calling Rand “Lews Therin” when he dies, so that’s one more thing to pound against his denial. Dare I hope it’s shattered by the end of this book?

Huh. And here I was thinking that more had happened in the White Tower by this point since the girls last had the spotlight. :/

You'll understand the importance of this chapter later in this book.
