(Psst, I had to edit my Rules back on the first page. I almost made this game impossible to win!)
We start our game with an info dump about the war I already gave the short version of back in the OP, so don't worry about that one. And in case you're worried, I'm going to gloss over the battles for the first few missions here and just give a quick summary of them. It's mostly tutorial crap anyway.
Next up, we meet out protagonist of our war adventure, Welkin Gunther
, on his way back to his hometown of Bruhl.
Lt. Welkin Gunther: Welkin was a university student who was immediately drafted after the Imperial invasion to serve his nation as lieutenant of Squad 7. As a commander, he rides the "Edelweiss", a highly mobile tank formerly piloted by his late father, Belgen Gunther, and created by the genius engineer, Professor Theimer.
Welkin is our main man in many ways. First off, he's the guy in charge of Squad 7. Second, he commands the Edelwiess, the squad's primary tank and the center of most of the game's strategies. And third, He can issue power ups called Orders. We'll get to those later on.
After walking quite a ways, Welkin remarks about how long it's been since he's been home.
And them proceeds to distracted by some nearby fish in the nearby stream, and proceeds to sketch them. See, Welkin is an avid biologist. a little too
As he sketches, a gun is pointed to his neck, and we meet our second protag, Alicia Melchiott
, and is captured for suspected spying. Shouldn't have stopped to sketch the fish, huh?
Sergeant Alicia Melchiott: A young lady who is one day hoping to become a baker. She served as a team captain of the Bruhl Town Watch and joined the Militia after escaping Bruhl, being posted to Squad 7 like Welkin. From her previous experience, she was given the rank of Sergeant and serves as a Scout.
I hope you are not surprised by what's going to happen to Bruhl. That can be seen coming from a mile away. Anyway, Alicia is the a great soldier, with high accuracy, useful abilities, and well rounded health and defense. Later in the game, she can even solo
some missions with the right Orders given to her. Expect to get a lot of use out of her.
Later, on the road to Bruhl, we see Alicia admiring Welkin's other drawings of wildlife, though she still maintains it's a secret code or something. At least, until Welkin's sister Isara
, makes the save to prove his innocence.
Corporal Isara Gunther: Taking to engineering in her fatherís footsteps, she earned several credentials before enlisting in the Militia. Being a Darcsen, she is discriminated against by a large number of people, especially Brigitte "Rosie" Stark.
Isara is very important storywise. Gameplaywise, she just drives the Edelwiess. She's still pretty cool regardless.
After a somewhat hilarious backpedal by Alicia, we soon find out that Welkin is the son of a legendary general of Gallia. However, they are soon interrupted by a Imperial scout team shooting up the place, killing nearby civilians. Faced with the threat, Welkin, Alicia, and a nameless Townguardsman move to attack.
BATTLE! ENCOUNTER AT BRUHL!
Units: 3 (Welkin, Alicia, Red Shirt Mcgee)
Enemy Units: 3 (All scouts)
Since everyone is a scout, it's just a matter of running one person through the map to take out the enemy units. Use Alicia for the best results. Easy A rank.
After the battle, Alicia looks on her fallen enemies and pledges to protect her town, but makes herself pledge to try to remember that war is more than dead bodies and killing, sealing her promise with the scattering of the seeds of a flower called Lion's Paw. And with closing words by the narrator, the game begins in earnest.
Next time: Can the Bruhl Town Watch defend their home? Spoilers: No, they can't.
