Dear fellow Troper/ette,
If my may introduce myself I am the Chinese Lantern I live in a kingdom far, far away (the Netherlands), and I've seen it a million times!
What? may you ask, I will explain it in the following...
In son of the mask the neighbours head was transformed into a GIANT NOSE, this
of course was because the god Loki, thought her to be nosy
she was later demonstrated
to the protagonist's wife as an example to confirm his stories: Norse mythology being real and
their son the product of a mask (the usual)
In sabrina the teenage witch somewhere in the final seasons (at least on our Nickelodeon)
She (Sabrina) was confronted with a security guard while going to a rock-concert with a
few of her friends, when the guard couldn't let them in, she (Sabrina, again) casts a spell
which causes his teeth to fall out, he (the guard) notices it and runs off, he is never mentioned again.
In the Gargoyles, New York City gets turned into stone (incl. its inhabitants) and many people are
smashed while one females arms are smashed of (just for the Lulz) and is also never mentioned again.
I've seen it many times and although I can't recall all of them (right now) I don't know if these spendable minor characters whose entire lives have been ruined.
In case of the first she will never be able to speak, see, hear or do anything again.
In case of the second he must now live without teeth.
In case of the third she is crippled for the rest of her live.
And for what? five seconds of mild comedy
I was wondering since it happens allot more then I posted if this is an actual trope.
A single (or multiple) person's life is ruined so the protagonists can move further in the
storyline and the unfortunate associates
of either good, evil, or neutral suffer off-screen.
Or is this just simple Fridge Horror?
The Chinese Lantern.
