Yggdrasil: Home of the Poorly-Justified Encounters

Last time, we encountered a rather transparent fake ending sequence, and were then told to stop Ledah from aerating Ursula's aquariums or whatever. As such, we now have to climb another giant tree.

We get some nice music for Yggdrasil, so with that on our side, let's head to area 6-1: Peseta Everglades.

The party is rather surprised to find a place like this inside a tree. Of course, we can't waste time.

But before we start out, I've got stuff to master:

Ein:

  • Sylvia: Frigid Shame: Level 2, 4-hit magic ice-elemental attack, power of 182, last attack hits the front rank

Fia:

  • Silvia: Tragic Edge: Level 1, 3-hit magic ice-elemental attack, power of 134, Mot-Vit

Lina:

  • Silvia: Twinkle Tear: Level 1, 3-hit magic ice-elemental attack, power of 173

Serene:

  • Silvia: Crystia Cannon: Level 2, 6-hit magic ice-elemental attack, power of 119, last 3 hits attack enemies behind the target

Cierra:

  • Witch Broom: Witch Whim: Level 2, random number of magic non-elemental attacks for exactly 55 damage each (...)

Something to note that I found out during my training: you should not put Fia in front of any skeletons. Their basic attacks poison, and between her low Strength and weakness to dark attacks, she will get hit by it.

Anyway, there's nothing of note on the first screen, so we head forward. On the second screen, I enter Look mode for a brief scene of some fairies running away from us. That's actually all there is of note here, so I move onward.

On the next screen, we encounter some enemies. As it turns out, they're the Cefiro, Yggdrasil's living security system. Supposedly, they're Sprites, but they're completely indistinguishable from the demons we've been fighting so far. This is just about all the explanation we get about them really. They're all weak to holy damage, so the Book of Kylier is quite handy here.

Incidentally, for this first fight the hint system blatantly lies to you. It says to put dar-weak characters in the back row so they'll be safe from the vampire, but the vampire is in the back row. As such, she'll always attack targets in the back row, trying to put them to sleep.

At any rate, the vampire had a new Silver Moon to replace the one I broke against Death, so I drop the Witch Broom in exchange for it. I then examine some grass, revealing the fairies from the last screen. They're initially worried that we're going to eat them, but Fia manages to convince them otherwise in a single sentence. They then ask us to take them to their friends, introducing themselves as MoMo and LoLo. Naturally, I take them because I'm a good guy, and they promptly make themselves at home in Ein's clothes. Yeah.

Anyway, that's it for the first area, so onward to area 6-2: Spiral Stones, which is constructed out of giant floating cubes. The first screen is empty, so I move forward and fight some more Cefiro. This group includes some archers, who drop a five-use Diana's Bow, the ultimate bow. I drop my Spiral Arch and master it for these attacks:

Ein:

  • Diana's Bow: Glint Arrow: Level 1, 1-hit physical lightning-elemental attack, power of 415

Fia:

  • Diana's Bow: Radiant Arrow: Level 2, 4-hit physical lightning-elemental attack, power of 208, effective against flying enemies

Lina:

  • Diana's Bow: Stardust: Level 3, 8-hit physical lightning-elemental attack, power of 194, last 3 attacks hit all, effective against flying enemies

Cierra:

  • Diana's Bow: Plasma Shot: Level 1, 3-hit magic lightning-elemental attack, power of 199

(Also, I put Fia in front of a skeleton again immediately after explaining why that's a bad idea. What is wrong with me?)

With another weapon type finished off, I proceed to examine a block that doesn't seem to be properly attached to the rest of the ground. Fia notes that it's probably close to collapsing, which means that we could probably break it by stomping on it. As such, I proceed to stomp on the block, dropping it to the ground below.

Before heading down to see what my rampant destructive tendencies have wrought, I head east. Lina complains that all the blocks look the same, and Cierra clarifies that they are, in fact, supposed to be that way. Apparently they're mass-produced to help defend Yggdrasil. Anyway, this area has a chest that I open for a new Phoenix Wand (replaces my old Salamander Rod).

This screen also contains a hole between two blocks, which contains a free Mana Wisp. Furthermore, it's a special super-strong one that gives each character 20 HP and 2 points to all stats, all for exactly one Trigger Point and no effort whatsoever. With that, we are officially done getting Mana Wisps for the rest of the game.

I then head back to the last screen and go downward. The blocks here are unstable, supposedly because they're being held in place through magic levitation. I can also examine the broken block I dropped down here, which contains the last Rock in the game. It even comes with the customary semi-mocking "Rock acquired" message and 500 points!

With that finished, I head east out of this area. I think I'll leave it here for now.
