One More Time, part 2: The Happy Ending... with a twist?

REWIND!

ROOK: Rus, sehy.

WALKER: Neguh kur t'nejieh lusheps zdeen eetis uth nehw muk liw miat uth roosh mia...

.

.

.

ROOK: ...nutsehrp dna, kiam, sivart toop ia.

Play.

ROOK: I put Leaf, Violet, and Carl on the 2nd floor and went to it.

ROOK: Hey, Carl.

CARL: I never thought I'd enjoy death as much as I do now. These dispatch missions have given my death new purpose!

ROOK: I set the furniture up to maximize the needed interests as much as possible, and sent the squad on its mission.

(Walker's first two texts. See last installment.)

CARL: Oh, dear. After seeing the things I've seen here, being dead suddenly doesn't seem so bad anymore.

ROOK: I guess I'll have to take his word for it.

LEAF: I tried to get into a hot tub but it suddenly turned into an angry tree! What strange kind of place is this?

VIOLET: I thought I just saw Poppy's dog being stolen by Morcubus. But that must have just been my imagination...

ROOK: Huh. Poppy's dog? I would've thought seeing Poppy herself being kidnapped and being unable to do anything about it would be worse...

(Walker presents the choice: Bring both back, or leave them?)

ROOK: I'd feel bad if I didn't bring Evelyn back. Let's do it.

WALKER: We've got Evelyn and Morcubus and we're heading back. The portals are becoming unstable, but we hope to see you in a few moments!

(Walker's final text. See previous installment.)

JENNY: Did we save Evelyn and apprehend Morcubus? Oh wait... I'm getting the final report now. In the meantime, have a trophy of Evelyn.

JENNY: The last report is in. All of the rifts have been sealed, but the team was able to extract Evelyn!

ROOK: What about Morcubus?

JENNY: ...He got away.

ROOK: Annnnd...now Agent Walker appears to yell at me.

WALKER: Rook!!! How could you release Morcubus?! You've put the whole city in danger!

JENNY: Wow. Good call.

ROOK: I Did What I Had to Do, Walker.

WALKER: What you had to do was protect your city. I trusted you to make the right decision in a difficult situation.

ROOK: ...SHUT. UP.

WALKER: ...What?

ROOK: I said, "Shut that digusting hole in your face you call a mouth."

WALKER: ...

JENNY: Whoa.

ROOK: Now, does anyone else want to speak? Or can we just end this charade right now?

(Suddenly, the "headquarters" setting dissolves to reveal a lab, in which Rook finds herself restrained attached to electrodes. The Sims around her dissolve into thin air, as well.)

????????: Very good, "agent". Or should I say, detective Rook?

ROOK: Morcubus! I should've known. How much of this was real? Tell me!

MORCUBUS: (chuckling) You are in no position to make demands, my dear girl. But since it amuses me, I'll tell you. Your last real case was...

(Rook strains to hear.)

MORCUBUS: ...saving Poppy's dog from me. I told you you'd rue the day! BWAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAA!

ROOK: ...

MORCUBUS: Also, you were about to be made an agent, and I could've let that happen, now could I? But now you must tell me. What led you to your conclusion?

ROOK: ...Fine. I first suspected something might be wrong when I sent single-agents squads out, but they were referred to in the plural. I had a stronger sense of something being wrong when reality couldn't seem to decide if Paul had been turned into a yeti. But the clincher was when agents we dispatched never showed up at the scene, yet we kept getting texts that we never saw the clients sending, despite watching them the whole time. Texts indicating that the mission was, in fact, proceeding.

MORCUBUS: Very good, detective. But not only is Walker not getting his new agent, you are going to stay here and test Morcu Corp's chemicals for the rest of your days!

BWAAAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAAAA!!!

ROOK: NNNNNNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!

Suddenly, Rook woke up in a hospital bed. She was obviously being kept alive. Nearby, two boys, both about ten years old, sat on either side of a woman, leaning on her, all three asleep. She slowly sat up. Her movements woke up one of the boys.

????: Huh? ...Sis, you're awake! Hey, mom! Bo! She's awake!

ROOK'S MOM: Hmm...? Oh! Oh, sweetie, you're finally awake!

(She pushed the button to call someone in as the boys went to her sides.)

ROOK: ...Skip? Bo? Is that you? How did you get to be so big...?

(Rook's mom got up and went over to her. She gently stroked Rook's hair.)

ROOK'S MOM: You've been out for a few years, dear...

BO: Yeah, sis! You went to sleep outside, and didn't wake up until now!

ROOK: Outside...? Wait... I remember... I think I was... in a tree, pretending to be a detective... but I fell off the branch... I guess that must have knocked me out.

ROOK'S MOM: Yes. But now, you're back with us, and... I'm so happy!

(She started crying tears of joy.)

??????: M-mm. Excuse me, I hate to interrupt, but since she's awake, we should probably run some final tests, and if they come back clear, she'll be free to go home.

ROOK: ...Walker?!?

WALKER: Dr. Walker, at your service, Miss Rook. I assume you heard my name while you were in your coma. It's not uncommon for that to happen. Nurse Jenny, if you would be so kind as to administer the tests?

JENNY: Of course, doctor.

(The tests were administered with minimal discomfort.)

WALKER: And now, our lab technician, Roxie, will take these to the lab to be tested. For now, I think we can remove these tubes and things. We'll let you alone for the time being, and tell you when we have your test results.

(After removing some of the equipment, they left. As soon as they did so, the twins climbed up beside their big sister and hugged her. She smiled and put her arms around them.)

ROOK: So, where are Dad and Emile?

ROOK'S MOM: They're playing with your baby sister... Snap.

ROOK: (excited and a little apprehensive) Sister...?

ROOK'S MOM: She's almost three. Hopefully, you'll get to see her for the first time soon, and she'll get to see you awake for the first time!

ROOK: (smiling) A sister... Snap... (grinning) Oh, Mom, another card game?

(The results of Rook's tests showed that it was fine for her to leave. They thanked the doctors and left for home, where Rook met Snap, and was a good big sister to all her siblings. Rook did eventually become a detective, and even a special agent, but while her job was satisfying, her cases were never really as exciting as the ones she had in her dream...)

(You may notice that the italicization stopped after a certain point. Well, it means what it always does: dialogue not from the game. That's right, that stuff about the events of most of the game being made up by Morcubus and the whole thing being All Just a Dream was made up by me. To see the rest of the Happy ending, proceed to the next installment. If it's not there yet, it should be shortly.)
