episode.1: Izu Anguish

We begin with a girl sitting in a window, looking in. She doesn't bear very much resemblance to the girls we've seen so far, but that's how Barasui drew Miu at first. She's looking at someone sleeping. She checks the time on her phone. 7:24. The sleeping person is Chika. Her clock's time is a little later, but whatever.

Episode 1: Izu Anguish

(On the episode page: Matsuri is riding Nobue's shoulders and yelling at Miu for holding onto her scarf. John is tucked into the scarf, as well. They're passing by a TAK Outlet.)

Chika slams Nobue's door open to yell at her for not waking her up. Miu interjects the bright idea of going ahead and getting ready (i.e. instead of wasting what little time she has to do so yelling at her sister). (By the way, in this episode, and for the next two, Nobue has shoulder-length blonde hair.)

They hurry downstairs with 20 minutes left, and Chika has Miu make toast while she (Chika) goes to the bathroom. Then she gets changed, though by the time we see her, she's already out of her pajamas and has a skirt on, and has just finished putting on a shirt. Miu asks to copy homework, and Chika agrees while she selects a shirt to go on over that one. She gets socks and a time check: Miu estimates that they have 5 minutes. As she puts on her socks (standing up), Miu decides to run into her with her shoulder. Chika tries to impress upon her why she shouldn't do that, but as she tries to put on her socks again, Miu pushes her over... and as Chika is on the brink of serious anger, Miu announces that the toast is done. (Man, that is some slow toasting. At least, it seems like it to me.)

On the way, they encounter Nobue again, who observes that they're going to be late, and offers to drive them. (Never mind that she should be going to her own school.) Their grandpa's car will serve in the absence of their parents'. However, Chika refuses to ride, as "something awful" happens to her every time Nobue drives. She is, instead, going to run.

Driver and rider in and buckled, Nobue adjusts her Pocky, and starts the car. On the way, they see Matsuri, also trying to get there on foot. Before she realizes it, however, she's riding in the car. She seems to be unsure how Nobue managed to get a license. Miu begins to remark how much faster it is to come in a car, when she notices that Nobue passed it. She's taking them with her! But where?

At school, Chika notices that Miu's chair is still empty. She dashes off a text to her, asking where she is. The response? "Heading 2 Izu."

Upon their return, they relate what they did there. Chika just... doesn't understand...

Episode dividers!

This volume's episode dividers are like this: in the upper outer corner of the page are a column of four names (the names of the main characters) and a column of four seasons.

For the first one, Nobue's name and the season of spring are marked with a simple checkmark. Nobue is standing with her back half to us, and is looking left. She holds up the leftmost portion of her long skirt with one hand and holding a cigarette with the other, which is just hanging there. On the other side, "Chika" and "spring" are circled. She herself is facing the reader dead-on, though she's looking to her left. She has her knuckles up to the sides of her chin, and she's smiling. Her shoes are pointed inward.

Next time: Episode 2!
