Episode 1: Of Mons and Men

There was me, that is Pipping Fool and then there was a liveblog site, that is what I am posting on right now. So I was there, trying to make up my rassoodock on what to do with the evening. I noticed that in my room was a faulty Silver GBA SP and that copy of Pokemon Green that had been missing for fucking months and then appeared right the fuck out of nowhere, so I thought to myself “Hey, maybe I should do that Pokemon Green Nuzlocke Liveblog I’ve been putting off for months” So that’s what I did. It ain’t glamorous but it’s a livin’.

Okay, so here’s how we’re going to be juggling this shit:

  • Any Pokémon that faints is considered dead, and must be boxed
  • Only catch the first Pokémon encountered in each area, and none else (with the exception of plot related revisits to said route). I am also going to abide by the “no dupes” policy. I’m not running around with a team of Gogdammed Zubats.
  • A white out is a game over. No exceptions
  • Despite not me understanding any Japanese Kana. I will nickname all my mons (The theme is Homestuck)
  • No hold items because lolfirstgen.
  • Legendaries can be caught, but not used.

So now that we’ve got DA RULES down pat. Let’s get started shall we?

So I inserted this rare and rather costly artefact (seriously, I bought this game in its pristine condition for 12$ and someone offered 90$ to buy it off me) into my shitty excuse for a GBA and then...

whoa.

I don’t even know how to describe this.

I mean, I’ve played my copies of Red, Blue and Yellow many times before, tripping on nostalgia catching the ORIGINAL 151 Pokemon and aiming to be the very best like no one ever was, but this is... new. It’s exhilarating, like being on a really sugar rush. The sound is crisp, yet more primitive than its western counterparts; I would say that the thing that grasped me the most was that the “bouncing” sound that Nidorino makes in the opening credits is completely different from Red and Blue, the title scene is pretty rad too and we get showcased some of the abominations of spriting mess that we’ll be seeing more of later ;).

So now I’m being a useless piece of shit and started playing the dammed game (After checking out the previous save file of course, trying to get used to all the kana I’ll be seeing for the rest of the game). So blah blah Professor Oak says some stuff blah blah Name character? I gave my character a bunch of kana symbols that don’t make any sense, but for the sake of this liveblog, we’ll call him “John”.Now we have to give a name to our rival a nickname. Like with John, I just named him a bunch of Random Japanese symbols, but we’ll call him Dave

. Now to get my starter Pokemon from Prof. Oak. For some reason, he is nowhere need to be found, so let’s cut to the chase and walk into the tall grass right here and...OHWTFWHERETHEHELLDIDYOUCOMEFROM?

After Oak materialises from the corner of the screen, he takes me to his lab (Which has been painted a funky shade of green that I don't remeber being in R/B/Y) and I chose my starter after Dave was being haughty for completely ironic purposes. I picked Squirtle (the best 1st gen starter) and called him “Eridan”. Dave picks Bulbasuar as is tradition with Pokemon Rivalsand of course, Dave wants to battle being the insufferable prick he is.

Eh, I’ve done these battles so many times before it’s not even funny. Eridan was all like “Yeah wwhatevver” and makes short work of his Bulbasuar, Dave rants about how that battle was a fluke and yadda yadda yadda moving on (On a different note, Dave’s sprite starts flickering and spinning around as if he was having a seizure, I don’t recall this ever happening in Red, Blue or Yellow so maybe it's a sprite glich unique to Green).

So now where doing that delivery fetch quest for Oak, which for me is just an excuse to grind Eridan up a few levels before taking Brock, you can never have enuff levels in a Nuzlocke. After a while of grinding I did the plot related thingy and got the Pokedex and 5 Pokeballs. Great! Now we can catch our first Pokemon! So I’m wandering around in the grass and out pops a Pidgey, I catch it with ease, his name will be Eggs. After Eggs joins the team and a quick stop to the Pokemon Center, grinding ensues. Eridan is kicking ass and Eggs is being useless, but we'll keep him as he might be useful later on.

Well this is going well so far! What could possibly go wrong?

Pokemon Total: 2

Body Count: 0

Next time, Fool and her team explore Viridian Forest!

This is a pretty interesting idea.

I plan on not only discussing the Nuzlocke, but the minute differences like the sprites, dungeon layout changes and my troubles in "What Item/Attack does what?" due to my inability to read Japanese.

Yeah. This'll be fun.
