Sinclair Drake Vs.The (Demon) World: Let's Play Strange Journey!
I'm enjoying this. Drake is a pretty enjoyable character already.
Pulse
Thanks a lot! Sorry if he sounds like a bit of a mope here, he'll be more fun once he gets his Compendium back next installment and has some demons to play off of. Like most SMT protagonists, he's a total cipher for the player, after all. Running jokes with him will be a.) how utterly bland he is, and b.) his paralyzing fear that the DEMONICA is going to rise up against him.
HamburgerTime
This looks like fun, but it's sad that we know he won't be able to change things.

What path did you take the first time by the way?

handsomerob
Neutral. Probably going to take it this time, too. Gore's big speech toward the end of the game convinced me that path was right, and like I said I want to make the choices in this game based on how I'D make hem.
HamburgerTime
This looks like it'll be fun. I like the dash of humor: it will help lighten up the whole doomy-gloomy atmosphere present in the mainline-SMT games.
gamerex27
Thought I'd read this while I wait for an SMT 4 update. So far, so good.
ReikoKazama
'Is Vetala secretly a Mensa-level genius?" That made me lol

I wonder how will be the personalities of each of the demons...

SaintDeltora
I'll try to give them their personalities from the game, with slight deviations to individualize each one. High-level demons, plot-important demons, and ones who were significant figures in their mythologies will hopefully have fully fleshed-out personalities.

Also, as a note, whenever you see a demon making a comment, it's one of Drake's demons. They're communicating from the Compendium via the DEMONICA feed; some of the plot-important demons (like the bosses) will comment on seeing their past selves, so if you see two of the same demon in a scene, the one that's speaking is Drake's demon. This is because they're the only ones apart from him who know about the time loop.

HamburgerTime
-laughs happily- Oh I'm loving the demon personalites. -takes notes for if ever I do a SMT Noctune liveblog-
phoenixdaughterAM
Oh those wacky crazy demons. XD
handsomerob
Thanks; I was worried it was getting too fillery with them commenting. What I did here was take their generic personalities from the game and give them slight tweaks based on their mythological roles to try to individualize them a bit. Like, Gremlin, Poltergeist, Knocker, Kaso, and Onmoraki all have the "Little Kid" personality in the game, so I wrote Knocker and Kaso as innocent kids, Gremlin as a Jerkass Spoiled Brat (the kind that always breaks stuff, which is what Gremlins are famous for!), Onmoraki as a second-grade schoolyard bully type, and Poltergeist as a creepy, spaced-out kid.
HamburgerTime
I'm guessing the Pretas never stop being annoying.
phoenixdaughterAM
I can vouch for that!

Thankfully, they're the only random encounters with Macca Beam, but arghhhhhhhhhh!

I'm enjoying this- The color commentary keeps things nice and lively.
Pulse
There are few things more humiliating in gaming than being robbed of an endgame amount of money by a mook-level foe...
HamburgerTime
Bah! Nobody likes a money leech.
handsomerob
Mastema keeps the heads of his enemies there, of course.
gamerex27
Shiisaa! One of my personal favorite demons.
phoenixdaughterAM
I smell Power/Momunofu slash fics on the horizon. (No not really)
phoenixdaughterAM
Thanks! There's so many demons in this game, I'm trying to give you guys an idea of their personalities with only two or three lines apiece. So, yeah, Momunofu and Power, being basically the equivalents on opposite sides (same level, same soldier theme) are the guys who absolutely hate to admit they respect each other, but they do. I also wrote Nue and Wendigo as Bash Brothers, based on their similar appearance and the fact that they commonly appear together in the wild.
HamburgerTime
The Shibboleth not only breaks through plasma armor, but if you pronounce it wrong, you reveal you're not Jewish!
ManCalledTrue
Poor guy is in for a disappointment isn't he?
Handsomerob
The only trick to Asura Roga is that Asura likes to use it every four rounds, in addition to the start of the fight. So if you block, you might not get hurt quite so much.
ManCalledTrue
So who is it?
HandsomeRob
Ooooh.
HandsomeRob
Careful with that! Voluntarily handing over your humanity is how all this crap got started!
ManCalledTrue
-snickers at Oberon and Titania's interaction- Oh yeah. That is how it would go down wouldn't it?
phoenixdaughterAM
Wait, what does that password do? Does it let you summon Mastema?

And what IS causing this timeloop? Is it the Bonus Boss?
gamerex27
Yep. He's Drake's demon now. Or will be once I reach level 82. Just wanted to go Off The Rails a bit to deliver him some karma. ;) It was supposed to sound like he's being sucked into the DEMONICA, but tha'ts hard to communicate in script format.
HamburgerTime
Mastema...pwned. XD

It is good.
HandsomeRob
On one hand, Drake alone (and any demons on his person I guess) is stuck in a time loop forced to replay the events of SJ over and over....on the other hand, Abaddon found a nickel!

I'd say it all works out.
Otherarrow
It turns out the Nickel is a fake. :P
HandsomeRob
Olympus Mons much? XD
HandsomeRob
Be thankful they didn't pull the same douchebag move that they did in Nocturne with Noah and make Demiurge super-resistant to Almighty.
dragonfire5000
Like a Boss. Good work Drake.
HandsomeRob
Author's notes: Welcome back, everyone! I've got some initial things to go over, if you don't mind...

  • First off, this playthrough will be more a character study than a walkthrough, due to the fact that, apart from a few bosses, i've already done the walkthrough. So that's what this will be, an insight into the minds of a Law Hero and a Law-aligned Protagonist. For Law!Drake, I wrote him as a utilitarian, which is easy as I'm something of one myself. He believes that if he can achieve the greatest good for the greatest number, and minimize the bad, particularly casualties, the mission will be a success. That's why I think you can see him sensibly side with Law here.
  • Kama is still based on Donquixote Doflamingo.
  • There's both a mythology reference and a Homestar Runner reference in here. See if you can spot them!
  • If you can't tell, as this is an "alternate history," the "Groundhog Day" Loop is still active, and another motive in Drake choosing Law this time is an attempt to change it. Though this story is an Alternate Universe; Neutral is still the canon run, to the extent a Let's Play can have "canon," anyway.
HamburgerTime
I now have the wonderful image of demons hearing Zelenin's song and breaking apart like in that one scene in the final level of Mass Effect 2. One can only hope that they're dead...
dragonfire5000
"some of 'em have nice hats, some of 'em have blue hair, one of 'em, after his adventure was over, started datin' what was technically his mom!"

Okay, I can guess a couple of them, but who are you referring to here?
Hunter1
Raidou, Minato, Aleph.
HamburgerTime
Ah, so it was the SMT 2 MC, and not someone from the spin offs... So why the hell was I thinking it was someone from the Digital Devil Saga games?!

On the other two, I felt safe in assuming that "nice hat" meant Raidou (I mean, does any other SMT MC even wear a hat, let alone a nice one?), and as for "blue hair", my initial thought was indeed Minato, although now that I think about it, doesn't the MC from Devil Survivor 1 also have blue hair?
Hunter1
Author's note: Only two points to note this time.
  • The "Flat "What."" at the end is my attempt to work in the "cold look" the MC gets after killing Gore in the Law route in a (hopefully) sympathetic fashion. Drake hasn't quite processed what happened yet, it seems.
  • Also, he appears to be hearing things. This couldn't possibly be important, right?
HamburgerTime
...I'm starting to see why people say to go neutral your first playthrough of Strange Journey.
Hunter1
Because it's emotionally traumatizing fighting Gore or because it's physically traumatizing fighting Gore?
HamburgerTime
I personally went with Chaos for my first route, then went to Law, and finally Neutral. Clearing up the "asshole routes" made Neutral feel all the more gratifying.

By the way, interesting how you made the MC's 'cold look' into a Heroic BSOD.
dragonfire5000
In my case, Gore sounds like the kind of boss that would make me either 1, pull out every single cheap trick I can, or 2, throw my DS or 3DS across the room in frustration.

I'm just not sure if that second one would qualify as being emotionally or physically traumatized... Maybe both.
Hunter1
I'll confess I may have semi-cheated. I used the Meteor Dragoon, a gun with a powerful wind-based attack that, on a first playthrough, is only available slightly later than this. I was actually using it to make the grinding go faster, then forgot to unequip it. Not sure if that counts as cheating or not.
HamburgerTime
Author's note: Drake's in too deep to back out now! Points to consider:
  • The title, of course, refers to the Beatles song, and specifically the fact that in the So Bad, It's Good Beatles Jukebox Musical Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, the villains use the song as part of their scheme to - wait for it - brainwash the planet!
  • Incubus has an unrequited and gross crush on Zelenin. I implied it lightly in the Neutral playthrough, and it traces back to a joke someone made in the SMT thread about how I got my first Incubus, who had invited himself into my party - he did it to get close to Zelenin! I thought it was funny, at least.
  • On the confrontation between Drake and Mithras - even though Drake took one of the "bad sides" here I can't be alone in thinking he has a point here, right?
  • Yes, this chapter basically covers one cutscene. Like I said in the first update, character stuff, not walkthrough.
  • And finally, I could not resist the Fox News joke. A buxom blonde going on and on about "the Lord" - am I describing Zelenin or a right-wing American news reporter?
HamburgerTime (edited by: HamburgerTime)
...Oh, terrific. I was thinking about Third Option answers to that last question, and got Asia Argento as a result. Now my brain is trying to figure out how to make a High School Dx D / SMT xover fanfic work.
Hunter1
I think calling Zelenin a "Nice Lady" at this point is definitely quite a stretch.

I think both Drake and Mithras have a point here; Mithras is completely right about the angels, but Drake is also right to point out that Mithras is hardly the paragon of virtues.
dragonfire5000
What does Asia Argento have to do with High School DxD, may I ask?
HamburgerTime
One of the characters is named that. She's a blonde ex-something (either priestess or nun) from the Vatican who got excommunicated for using the Sacred Gear, Twilight Healing (a special power she was born with), to heal a devil. She first shows up in the story after being approached by a church willing to take her in, but it turns out the "church" was just a front for the fallen angels, who want Twilight Healing for themselves, and don't really care what it takes to get it (up to and including extracting it from her in a process that would kill her).

So, story arc short, the heroes (a bunch of devils, both natural and reincarnated) find out what's going on, raid the church building, confront the fallen angels and their human lackeys, and save Asia and Twilight Healing. As a result of the rescue, she gets reincarnated (transformed) into a devil, and as such, has to break herself of the habit of blessing people and praying to God (since it is now physically painful to do so).

(And in case you're wondering, yes, she serves as the dedicated team healer in future fights involving the main characters.)
Hunter1
OOOOOOOHHHH... I thought you were talking about the real person Asia Argento, who's a (terrible) actress and daughter to horror movie director Dario Argento. She's a brunette and has never been involved in anime to my knowledge, which is why I was confused.

...why are all holy women in Japanese media gorgeous blondes, anyway?
HamburgerTime (edited by: HamburgerTime)
Author's notes: What's this, Sinclair Drake happy with his station in life? This can't last, can it? Points of consideration:
  • The title is a line from Jesus Christ Superstar. My chapter titles are all music-themed, so how could I resist this on a Law route playthrough?
  • There's a movie reference in here, too. See if you can find it!
  • Drake was not affected by the song. This is a point that's a bit ambiguous in the game itself, but I went with "not" due to choices being one of the Central Themes of the series. It's a lot more meaningful if Drake does everything from now on of his own free will, no? Making him just another victim of the song removes all his agency.
  • I had Mithras get in the last word on the whole "brain-scooping" point from last chapter, and I'm not sure I should have. Thoughts?
  • Finally, Dragonfire requested (via PM), that I add reactions from Drake's Neutral and Chaos demons, so I tried to deliver.
HamburgerTime
...He's the MC in an SMT game, odds are that no, it won't last.
Hunter1
On the point of Mithras, I do think giving him the last word does certainly work. Sure, he had his cronies scooping out people's brains...but what Zelenin did effectively turned people into mindless automatons that do nothing but sing hosannas to a possibly malevolent entity.

I didn't think I'd get acknowledged in the comments at all, to be honest. Still, nice to see that you're following my suggestion about the Neutral and Chaos demons.
dragonfire5000
Author's notes:
  • First off, Omegaradience requested more angst re: Jimenez from Drake, and he was right, I did sort of neglect him on Neutral. If you're reading this, hope you liked this chapter.
  • What's this, some past from Drake? I don't see any reason why this can't apply to his Neutral self too, by the way.
  • Ladies and gentlemen, the first of two original lines Zelenin will say in this liveblog. I tried to make her sound cold and dare I say it, robotic.
HamburgerTime
Make sure you make the resulting dialogue between Drake and Jimenez a good one.
dragonfire5000
You think I should write some original lines for Jimenez, Dragon? It does seem like there should be Boss Banter, you're right.
HamburgerTime
I think you've captured Jimenez's voice perfectly. Great job. Boss Banter really should've been included in the Jimenez and Zelenin boss fights.

Also, is it just me, or do the demons that get the most characterization in your liveblogs all have names starting with 'M?' We had Mastema, Minotaur, and now Mithras...
dragonfire5000 (edited by: dragonfire5000)
Thanks on Jimenez!

As for Mithras, he is, in my opinion, the best characterized of the Four Tyrants, so absent a playable Lucifer he was my choice for a "spokesman for Chaos" among Drake's demons.
HamburgerTime
Author's notes:
  • The title is a reference to Styx's "Come Sail Away."
  • And that was the second and last original line Zelenin will say. And as far gone as she is I hope that was at least a bit cathartic. She never did get to bring any karma to Mitra in the game itself. Mithras's taunts are basically some of my headcanons about Zelenin; we don't learn much about her, but based on some of Asura's comments I'd imagine she has low self-esteem, a bad case of "woman in a man's field" angst, and apprehension about her looks.
  • That punch was supposed to resemble a two-page spread from a manga; I was specifically thinking of this one.
  • Mithras's laughter style is based on Fire Emblem's Lekain.
  • This is how you obtain Seraph and Mara "legally;" I was naughty and password-abused to get them on Neutral.
  • I threw a Law-sympathizing Chaos demon in there, as the opposite has happened occasionally in the SMT-verse.
  • Also, plot.
HamburgerTime (edited by: HamburgerTime)
Zelenin didn't get to bring karma to Mitra because the MC did...twice, in fact. Come to think of it, the only way Zelenin could actually accomplish something was by being manipulated, huh? Poor woman.
dragonfire5000
Drake, Drake, Drake...in the world of Shin Megami Tensei, all paths are stained with blood. It's that type of world. How many demons have you killed to get to where you were? Can you honestly say that the demons don't count, even when you have depended on so many during your journey?
dragonfire5000
Author's notes: Only the epilogue remains! Points to consider:
  • Title's a reference to Godspell because I might as well reference the other Jesus musical too.
  • And I couldn't resist getting in one last shot at Mastema, either.
HamburgerTime
Author's note: Well, that was quite a run, wasn't it? Points to consider:
  • The title is a reference to Gypsy.
  • Dragonfire asked whether Drake would be "punished," for lack of a better term, for going Law, well, here's your answer - not formally, but he's left all alone. He was so committed to saving the world that he didn't know what individual friends he had until they were gone.
  • The bit with Frost Ace was a reference to, of all things, The Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck.
  • If you can't tell, the lines that appear between the knocking sounds are lines from the Neutral liveblog; they're "what should have happened."
  • Finally, it's up to you what the final "Crash" means. I personally think it's either the Neutral timeline overwriting the Law one or Drake's mind completely shattering, but be creative!

Thanks to everyone who supported me; my next game will be Fire Emblem Awakening. Not sure if I'll liveblog it just yet. Well, see you around! Play us out, Zelenin!
HamburgerTime (edited by: HamburgerTime)
Well, that was certainly quite a trip. I suppose the next liveblog will be the adventures of Frost Ace, the one who wields the Gauntlet.
