* AluminumChristmasTrees: The concept of Swish (an alcoholic drink distilled from old liquor barrels) ''has'' to be something created for the show, right? Nope. [[http://forums.redflagdeals.com/extracting-alcohol-old-whisky-barrels-199789/ Swish]] is very real, and it's just as nasty as the show makes it out to be.
* BaseBreakingCharacter:
** Julian has become one as of late. Some fans enjoy his chemistry with the other characters, others claim he’s become a [[ItsAllAboutMe selfish, careless]] person and the one responsible for the boys constantly getting in trouble. Detractors often point towards his role in season 11. [[spoiler:After Julian left the park at the end of season 10,]] Bubbles and even [[TokenEvilTeammate Ricky]] had managed to clean up their act, and started a legitimate pizza sauce business. [[spoiler:Immediately after they find Julian, he [[ToxicFriendInfluence convinces them to get back into a life of crime]] and he moves back to Sunnyvale.]]
*** On the ''Park After Dark'' podcast Julian often exhibits a fuckton of internalized homophobia, and while the boys make light of it by mercilessly teasing him, the exchanges can be uncomfortable to watch. This negative quality is further exasperated when Randy is on the show leaving Julian to come across as a huge bigoted abusive prick compared to the relatively chill and accepting Julian from the mainline show.
*** Julian gets significantly worse on the Swearnet series ''Jail'' and ''Randy's Reach''. He is greasier than ever, more greedy and exploitative than ever. His actions cause Bubbles to go to jail and get threatened by inmates; he coerces Randy into sex work, which causes him to contract chlamydia; strongarms Randy into giving up 75% of his business ownership over a one time prescription cost as a result of said STD; cuts corners with spoiled food and unwittingly poisons a restaurant full of people, including a senior citizen. Any magnanimous actions by Julian is usually negated by some "unforeseen misfortune", often accompanied by abrasive victim blaming. Swearnet-era Julian is a malignant narcissist prone to manipulation, {{Gaslighting}}, MovingTheGoalposts and is a border-line HateSink.
** Lucy is this in spades. Some fans love her chemistry with Ricky, others consider her a toxic {{Hypocrite}} who Ricky is better off without. Her friend Sarah also counts for similar reasons.
** Conky, either a hilarious SitcomArchnemesis to Ricky, or an obnoxious {{Jerkass}} who the show is better off without.
** There are some who insist Bubbles is headed this way in the post-tv era. For a character who used to be considered TheHeart during the entire run of the show, detractors claim lately he has [[TookALevelInJerkass developed a nasty jerkass]] streak towards Randy, and sometimes towards Ricky and Julian depending on the mood. The shoot-the-shit format of ''Park After Dark'' allows greater potential for inter-personal nastiness between the boys with none of the kumbaya from the series. It's during these exchanges Bubbles, smartest man at the table, can really shine as the maestro of mean.
* CatharsisFactor: After having to put up with [[spoiler:Private]] Leslie Dancer's borderline authoritarian abuse of the Sunnydale Residents throughout season 9, watching Randy utterly humiliate him in a fight, and his corresponding arrest is very satisfying.
* CultClassic: While hugely popular in its native Canada, it was virtually unknown outside of it. With the show now on Netflix and [=YouTube=], through word of mouth has developed a strong cult following in the states and elsewhere.
* EndingFatigue: The season 8 finale. The boys get arrested... then there's still ten minutes worth of wrap-up. It makes Lord of the Rings feel like a blink and you'll miss it moment.
* EnsembleDarkhorse: Bubbles was originally not meant as a major character, but his moments in the first season were so popular that they expanded his role further to what it is today. Creator Mike Clattenburg has gone as far as saying if Bubbles wasn't on the show, it wouldn't have lasted long.
* GermansLoveDavidHasselhoff: The show has become ''huge'' in Ireland since its Netflix debut, to the point of the cast doing a live tour there. It is most likely connected to the similarities in tone it has with Irish classics such as ''Series/FatherTed''.
* HoYay: Julian tries to persuade Ricky to marry Lucy by telling him a lie that people think he's gay because he won't marry her. The plan backfires when Ricky's stupidity causes him not only to believe that he ''is'' gay, but also wonder whether he and Julian are ''both'' gay.
** Julian often dates women, but other characters repeatedly make insinuations about the relationship between him and Randy. Julian will usually deny it once, then ignore further references. In one of the films, Julian even goes so far as to let Mr. Lahey believe that he and Randy are dating in order to manipulate him.
** Cory and Trevor hook up with two transvestites and unconvincingly deny having done anything with them, spy on J Roc through his bedroom window (while he happens to be "getting changed"), and are easily convinced by Julian and Ricky to service the male clients of Julian's massage parlor.
*** In an early episode, they also insist that it's gay for two men to hug each other after seeing Ricky and Julian do so, but by the end of the sixth season, they hug and say they love each other -- and then Trevor breaks down and cries because he misses Cory after Ricky separates them.
** And then in Season 10, Cory tries to [[spoiler:hire gay male strippers for Jacob's stag party]], although that could be chalked up to Jacob's ambiguous wording and Cory being ''really'' stupid.
* MemeticMutation: Many of the "Rickyisms." You'll ''still'' hear Canadians calling them "ja-''lop''-en-o" chips.
** "Baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaam!!!"[[note]]"Peanut butter and jaaaaaaaaaaaam!"[[/note]]
** "[[BegoneBribe I'm gonna pay you $100 to fuck off]]."
** "Man, maybe I ''am'' gay."
** "Smokes, let's go."
** "Worst case Ontario" has had sticking power. Particularly in Ontario.
** [[https://youtu.be/WdlIKy2lJ_g?si=v7zOgyB-2xIf5faL Lahey falling down the stairs]] from "I Am the Liquor" as a reaction to clips of someone doing something drunk, stupid, sexy, or cute.
* NarmCharm: The show is made for dirt cheap, the acting is often inconsistent and the plots are usually pretty hokey, but the sheer earnestness on display was just as vital as the humor in winning over the hearts of Canadians.
* NightmareFuel: Conky again. Played for laughs with the ominous music that accompanies him, but the viewer is ''never quite sure'' whether Bubbles is in control of him.
* RetroactiveRecognition: Trina Lahey was played by Creator/ElliotPage, years before he starred in ''{{Film/Juno}}''.
* TheScrappy: Barb's enforcer in season 10, Candy. A [[DroppedABridgeOnHim bridge]] was thankfully dropped on her.
** Donna, due to taking a level in jerkass in seasons 9 & 10.
* SeasonalRot:
** Season 7 is largely considered to be ''roughly'' on the same level as the others, but some parts of the fanbase dislike it due to the wackier plot and the return of Conky.
** In Season 8, the plots are a little less silly, more in-line with seasons before 7. The character traits are more exaggerated than ever, which is good, bad, or indifferent depending on who you ask.
** Season 10 manages to achieve this even for people who liked the aforementioned two. The show suddenly took a [[SadistShow much more cruel]] tone, with a sharp uptick in the number of [[BlackComedyRape rape jokes]], Donna's character being turned from a fairly well-rounded depiction of a UsefulNotes/{{Transgender}} person to a [[UnfortunateImplications transphobic stereotype,]] and the two [[Music/SnoopDogg guest]] [[Creator/TomArnold stars]] falling ''completely'' flat for many. If your stoner show has Snoop Dogg on it and he looks ''bored out of his skull,'' you did something wrong. Luckily seasons 11 and 12 were ''much'' better received.
* SpecialEffectFailure:
** Several interview segments in the ''Out of the Park'' series are obviously greenscreened; the quality of the compositing in better in some cases than in others, but the perspective is a dead giveaway (the background is often too big for the characters).
** In season 8, scenes set in Ricky's indoor ice rink have some rather fake-looking foggy breath added in.
* {{Squick}}: [[RunningGag Dirty ol' piss jugs.]]
* StrawmanHasAPoint: During season 11, Julian [[spoiler:suspects Lahey of lying to Ricky about being his father to try and sabotage their latest operation. We as the audience, know Lahey genuinely believes he’s Ricky’s father and has no ill intent against him.]] However, considering that Lahey has betrayed them several times in the past and they’ve been enemies for decades by this point, Julian really does have every reason to be suspicious.
* TheyWastedAPerfectlyGoodPlot:
** The end of Season 4 set up some impressive CharacterDevelopment for Cory and Trevor, as well as potential for all kinds of new plots when [[TheDogBitesBack they finally repay Ricky and Julian for all the years of abuse]] and use the Boys' drug money to buy the park for themselves. Unfortunately, come Season 5 everything's back to the way it was, as Barbara Lahey tricked Cory and Trevor into thinking they were buying the park, stole the drug money and used it to pay off Sunnyvale's debts without having to sell it.
** The Season 11 storyline of Lahey being Ricky's father could've led to some interesting character developments. Such a shame Status Quo had to come in full effect by undoing the plot twist.
* UnintentionallySympathetic: The bulk of Lahey's problems result from The Boys antics driving him off the force and into alcoholism. If not for them he wouldn't be in the downward spiral he's in, although it was ultimately George Green who caused it, as he refused to believe his own partner, didn't do a breathaliser and basically hung him out to dry.
** Randy in season 11 is going through the motions to become a cop, his dream job. He does have most of Ricky's loved ones locked up, but due to a lack of evidence, Goegre Green is forced to release them. Watching Randy being called in George Green's office and going in with a smile on hs face, only to be shouted and screamed at by George who not only tells him to never step foot in the station again due to the amount of crap he has to deal with due to Randy arrests having been done with no evidence and says as long as he's chief he'll never be a cop but actually smashes a window trying to throw something at him, it's not hard to feel sorry for ol' Randers when he leaves Green's office in tears.
* WinBackTheCrowd: The final few seasons took a noticeable drop in quality, but the Netflix revival ones have both been well received by fans.
** Similarly, the Swearnet-exclusive ''Trailer Park Boys: Jail'' series was a welcome return to form after the rather poorly received animated series.
