* AlternateCharacterInterpretation: Fans' and directors' opinions are very much divided as to the niceness and/or nastiness of Point and/or Fairfax (and to some extent Elsie, and Wilfred and Phoebe).
* SugarWiki/HeartwarmingMoments: Sergeant Meryll's cut-song, [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z5wZO8HQ4Gk "A Laughing Boy But Yesterday"]] (about his son, Leonard) is particularly sweet, especially given that Gilbert tended not to put a huge amount of emphasis on familial relationships.
* MemeticBadass: In-universe, Leonard seems to be something of one of these. He's a little ''too'' good at killing people.
** We hear a lot about Leonard from his father and the other yeomen, [[HeroOfAnotherStory but the man himself has very little stage time]]. What adventures does he have between going into hiding and returning with the reprieve?
*** Some productions have Leonard's actor [[ActingForTwo double as First Yeoman]], since both are tenors.
*** Other productions have him [[ActingForTwo double as the Headsman]] since is a little too good at killing peopleā€¦
*** And then there's [[https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL9EMWkNl3O5ElXy5p0QHphOoydAKjvj13 this production]], where Leonard's "in-hiding" antics include wearing a cloak, carrying lots of weapons, lurking in major chorus numbers, and almost strangling Jack Point at the mention of "a joke that's too French".
* {{Tearjerker}}:
** Jack Point's death if he's killed off.
** The 1982 TV film has Jack Point's body being carried out of the tower by the despondent members of his troupe during the credits, while a reprise of ''The Merryman and his Maid' plays
* UnintentionallySympathetic: Point is the last in a long line of George Grossmith G&S characters who DidNotGetTheGirl and end up miserable, but because of the greater seriousness of the opera, audiences found his ending outright depressing, to the point that Gilbert had to revise Elsie's final lines to be less contemptuous of Point (see ThrowTheDogABone) and it became common to portray him as the tragic hero of the play.
* TheWoobie: Jack Point, again.
