* AlternativeCharacterInterpretation: Viola[[spoiler:'s body who is really possessed by Ellen]] may do one of two things before the game ends. In the normal ending, she may turn around and give the house a long look. In the true ending, she [[spoiler:turns her back on the dead Viola, giggles, and leaves]]. Fans are up to decide whether [[spoiler: Ellen was regretful in her actions or not]].
* SugarWiki/AwesomeMusic: This game's soundtrack is amazingly fitting for the game's creepy atmosphere, but the theme "Miller House" is one that really [[spoiler:emphasizes the TearJerker that is the True Ending, while also driving in how the player [[TheComputerIsALyingBastard has been deceived the whole time]]. Not only did [[TheBadGuyWins the villains win]], but ''{{you|Bastard}}'' helped them]].
* BigLippedAlligatorMoment: Right after you [[spoiler:feed the frog to the snake]], upon entering the next room, the [[spoiler:ghost of the frog]] appears behind you as you leave. If you re enter the room before going to the past the cat statue hallway, the snake room will be turned into what appears to be the inside of a stomach, with intestines. Creepy music will play during this, though the intestines will not harm you. Upon exiting and reentering the room, it will return to normal. This only happens once and has nothing to do with the rest of the game.
* CatharsisFactor: Knowing about the ending beforehand may turn subsequent playthroughs into this, [[spoiler:as you let "Viola" die in various excruciating ways]].
* CompleteMonster: [[spoiler:[[OurDemonsAreDifferent The Black Cat Demon]] is a SoulEating monster who happened upon the abused [[{{Tykebomb}} Ellen]] after she killed her parents, devouring the deceased's souls and [[TheCorrupter corrupting]] Ellen into becoming his latest witch. Convincing Ellen she would never be loved by anyone and promising to cure her illness for bringing him souls, the demon spends centuries molding her and consumes countless innocents while leaving the tortured spirits to wander within the titular house forever. Sadistically suggesting Ellen maim herself before swapping bodies with Viola, the demon [[TheBadGuyWins eats the crippled Viola's soul later on after Ellen has her killed]].]]
* CryForTheDevil: [[spoiler:''The Diary of Ellen'']] makes the Witch pretty sympathetic, as it showcases her StartOfDarkness and the tragic life she had. It does get harder to sympathize with her later on though due to her horrific actions and becoming an open {{Sadist}}.
* DracoInLeatherPants: A lot of fans have a tendency to paint the Witch as someone who's completely innocent, and instead shifting the blame onto either her parents, or [[spoiler:the cat demon]], or both. Her parents were neglectful, and the book goes into more detail about how [[spoiler:the demon]] warped her, but it also shows her having early signs of sociopathic behavior, before and after she [[spoiler:met the demon]], such as not flinching nor showing any signs of guilt or regret for murdering hundreds of people, announcing herself to be AboveGoodAndEvil, being maniacally selfish in her end goals, and finally reveling in sadistic glee at Viola's suffering. The Witch may be a TragicVillain, but she is still nothing short of a monster.
* HilariousInHindsight: [[VideoGame/{{Undertale}} A white flower politely converses with you and has the potential to kill you]]. And both flowers [[spoiler:end up killed by a VillainProtagonist, both of whom have taken the body of the PlayerCharacter and have the ability to [[JustifiedSavePoint come back after death]]]].
* ItWasHisSled: [[spoiler:You are not playing as Viola, but Ellen, who switched bodies with her.]] If you don't already know the plot twist already, it's either your first time or you're really, really lucky.
* MisaimedFandom: A sizable portion of fans continue to define the Witch by her backstory, excusing or downplaying everything she does, when her origin story was about her becoming increasingly unlikeable and unsympathetic to flat-out, horrifyingly evil in the game.
* MoralEventHorizon: Many players consider the Witch's backstory tragic enough that they'll excuse her having [[spoiler:the demon eat her parents]], but [[spoiler:sacrificing hundreds of innocent children to it]] is JumpingOffTheSlipperySlope, and she crosses the line by [[spoiler:stealing Viola's body -- leaving her in Ellen's own mangled corpse -- and having her murdered by her father, sadistically taunting her about it as she mocks her compassion toward her, then [[DeaderThanDead having her soul be eaten by the Black Cat Demon]] as she [[KarmaHoudini triumphantly leaves]] to [[KillAndReplace take over Viola's life]]]].
* {{Narm}}: The suddenness and absurdity of several death scenes can easily make them come off as hilarious rather than scary. Special mention goes to [[spoiler:Viola being squashed to death by a gigantic teddy bear.]]
* ParanoiaFuel: The sheer amount of things that pursue you can do this. One off sound or sight will put you on edge. Especially when [[NothingIsScarier it gets quiet]].
* PlayerPunch: Viola finds a cute frog, but has to feed it to a giant snake to proceed, and its ghost appears just before leaving the room. Later, she meets its tadpoles, who accuse her of murdering their father, and which she also has to kill to proceed. And just before entering the witch's room, she finds the corpse of the black cat that's been accompanying her through the house. [[spoiler:Both endings show it alive, although the pseudo-third ending reveals it was a demon.]] There's also the [[CruelTwistEnding true ending]].
* TooBleakStoppedCaring: Most of the characters are either horrible or suffer horrible fates, which made it a tough sell for a lot of people to be invested in. The frog who helps Viola [[spoiler:gets eaten by a snake]]. Later on, [[spoiler:his offspring die as well]]. The garden has red weeds who viciously lie to you, the yellow flowers are vain, want the white flower dead and laugh over [[spoiler: hearing it's death screams]], the white sentient flower who is one of the two nice beings in the house to Viola [[spoiler:gets chopped up by her]]. The queen of them all goes to [[spoiler:the true Viola, who turns out to be inside Ellen's body as it's revealed that we've been playing as Ellen all along]]. In contrast, Viola [[spoiler: who as said in the previous spoiler is Ellen who killed dozens, if not hundreds of people, causes the actual Viola in her body to die in agony and despair and [[KarmaHoudini gets off scot-free]]]].
* TheWoobie: Viola is the innocent daughter of the huntsman who happens to befriend a girl in the woods named Ellen. [[spoiler:When the latter tricked Viola into [[FreakyFridayFlip switching bodies for one day]], it was revealed that Ellen mutilated her legs and gouged out her eyes, which causes Viola to experience extreme physical pain. Annoyed at Viola's screams, Ellen then gave her a throat burning medicine which rendered Viola mute and helpless. When Viola tries to get her body back from Ellen, the latter then manipulates her father into shooting Viola under the pretence that Viola was a monster chasing her; [[{{Sadist}} laughing at her suffering as she taunts Viola]] that [[KillAndReplace she will take everything that Viola loves]]. '''Then''', just to make sure not even a trace of her remains, [[DeaderThanDead Ellen leaves Viola's soul to be eaten by the Black Cat Demon]]. MV's new ending adds that Viola didn't die from the bullets, but suffered DeathByDespair (which is the only way for a witch to die); her father not recognizing her and calling her a monster, shooting her dead, and Ellen taunting her in her own body [[DespairEventHorizon pushed her over the edge]]]]. With the absolutely horrifying and tragic fate she suffers, it's no wonder the poor girl's considered a shining example of how NoGoodDeedGoesUnpunished.
