* SugarWiki/AwesomeMusic: The film has a surprisingly stellar alternative/indie rock soundtrack, including highlights like Music/TVOnTheRadio's "Wolf Life Me", Oceansize's "Music for a Nurse", and Music/DeathCabForCutie's "I Will Follow You Into the Dark".
* CriticalDissonance: While some [[CausticCritic critics ravaged the film due to being different from the original and the book]], the general consensus think the movie is still good, just a real TearJerker.
* FixFic: Try to find a story where [[spoiler: Annie]] dies.
* SugarWiki/HeReallyCanAct: Justin Chatwin as Nick.
* SugarWiki/HeartwarmingMoments: When Nick recovers in the hospital, thanks to Annie's intervention, [[spoiler: she realizes that she's about to die from the gunshot wound]] and tearfully laments that she never got to do her one good thing (a CallBack to an earlier conversation with her brother). Nick corrects her, pointing out that she saved his life.
* JerkassWoobie: Annie really..really needs a hug.
* NightmareFuel: [[spoiler:How would you like to be a disembodied spirit who can be heard only by someone who tried to kill you, knowing that you're dying, and watching everyone around you fall apart because they think you're already dead?]]
** Nick [[spoiler:struggling to keep his body's head above a rapidly-rising river while screaming for help as the police only ''just'' arrive on the scene]] is pretty frightening.
* RetroactiveRecognition: That's [[Series/TheBlacklist Gina Zanetakos]] as Annie.
** Creator/JustinChatwin played Tom Cruise's son in ''Film/WarOfTheWorlds2005'', and Goku in ''Film/DragonballEvolution''.
* TearJerker: Oh, so many. Nick's mother realizing she didn't actually know her own son. Nick's mother breaking down at her desk. Annie looking through Nick's things. Annie saying goodbye to Victor. Annie finally getting to [[spoiler:Nick's room at the hospital]]. The epilogue.
** "I Will Follow You Into the Dark". Full stop.
* UnintentionallyUnsympathetic: Annie. [[spoiler:While she does have a horrible home life and some redeeming qualities like her interactions with her little brother (which shows that she's a BrokenBird and a JerkassWoobie) it still doesn't justify her actions in the film. She's a crook, a thief and a gang leader who brutally beats Nick to near death with her thugs and then leaves him for dead in a sewer (granted Nick didn't help by constantly taunting her but still). Nick himself called her out on this by rightly pointing out that her poor home life doesn't justify her killing him. Not only that but she also bullied his friend Pete because he owed her a debt only to then target Nick because he decided to step in and defend Pete and then she falsely assumed Pete called the cops on her (when it was really Marcus) and attempted to beat him as well so that he could confess which then makes her indirectly responsible for Pete's suicide attempt later in the film as he told her Nick's name thinking that he left for London when, unbeknownst to him, he didn't which then led to the events above. While she does regret everything later, her actions just paint her as a violent bully.]]
* {{Wangst}}: Part of Nick's character development is discovering that he's not the only one suffering, and other people have it worse.
* TheWoobie: Nick and Pete.
