!!The Stephenie Meyer book:
* FandomRivalry: With ''Literature/{{Animorphs}}''.
* GrowingTheBeard: On the author's part. Whether you consider ''The Host'' to be better than Meyer's [[Literature/{{Twilight}} previous work]] or not, it is certainly better received.
* MisaimedFandom: The ending of the book and movie ends with [[spoiler:Wanda getting her own body and being able to finally be with Ian. Multiple reviewers make a point that Wanda's new body is relatively attractive, which makes the relationship with Ian and Wanda more based off physical appearances rather than genuine loving.]]
* PuritySue: Wanderer; granted, she's not as egregious an example as [[Literature/{{Twilight}} Bella]], but still. She's honest, sweet-natured, and gentle to a fault, and toward the end she has quite a circle of admirers amongst the human clan. Those who do not admire her either don't know her, or, like Maggie and Sharon, are described as shrewish and hateful. At the end, she even ''looks'' the part, and Doc comes dangerously close to pronouncing her TooGoodForThisSinfulEarth.
** To be fair, though, the story is written from a first-person perspective. [[FridgeBrilliance Don't we all perceive people who are nice to us as better and more worthy of attention than people who aren't, regardless of circumstances?]]
** Which is why Melanie's perspective, for most of the story, is painfully overlooked. Maggie and Sharon are Melanie's aunt and cousin - maybe not as close family-wise as her brother, and definitely weird in some ways, but still family nonetheless. She knows much better than Wanda about their lives and personalities, and why they are bitter and hateful toward Souls. At the very least, she could have spoken up for them when Wanda made biased judgments about them. But Melanie hardly ever speaks up at all - and only when Jared is somehow involved. When somebody doesn't stick up for their own family in favor of the main character's point of view, there's a bit more than first-person bias going on.

* TheyWastedAPerfectlyGoodPlot: The book has a lot of room to be really, really good, what with benevolent aliens taking over the world, the divide between what's ruled by your body and what's determined by your mind, the difference between Wanda's love for Ian (purely mind, since she doesn't have a body) and Melanie's love for Jared (more body, since her mind is overpowered by Wanda's), the morality of UtopiaJustifiesTheMeans... it could have been really awesome if it hadn't been eaten by the weak beginning and worse ending.

!! The 2013 film based on the Stephenie Meyer book:
* CriticalBacklash. The movie has been near-universally panned by critics and currently holds a score of 9% on Rotten Tomatoes. Moviegoers' reactions have been rather more mixed.
* CrowningMusicOfAwesome: "Radioactive" by Music/ImagineDragons in the trailer.
* {{Narm}}: Turns out having your main character be a prisoner in her own body, who spends most of the story impotently screaming at the person controlling it, is rather silly to see on film.

!!Tropes applying to the Korean film:
* AcceptableTargets: Americans. Though the Korean authorities aren't much use, either.
* AlternateCharacterInterpretation: This article, on page 83, http://scholarcommons.usf.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=5440&context=etd , implies that Gang-du, who is high-strung, sensitive and whose world centres more on his family than anything else, is complicitly InTouchWithHisFeminineSide, and adopts a maternal role at the end as well as a paternal one.
* AwesomeMusic: Courtesy of the score by Byeong Woo-lee.
* FunnyMoments:
** It ends up in tragedy, but the all too human moment of a normal man thrust into the thick of danger... who promptly realizes he miscounted just how many shotgun shells remain in his gun.
** Se-joo asks Hyun-seo what she'd want to drink..

** The chase scene, due to its [[SoundtrackDissonance unfitting]] orchestral BGM.
*** When the gang gets away in their getaway car, [[OhCrap they realize that Nam-joo isn't in the car]]. They then find her walking towards the car at a horrendously slow pace.
** During the monster's first attack, we see a girl playing with a bobby pin [[SoundtrackDissonance listening to orchestral music on her headphones]] completely oblivious to the mayhem around her. When someone runs by, she turns around only to promptly get taken out by the monster.
** The Park family's mourning session over Hyun-seo turns into an over-the-top farce when they start wrestling each other and end up writhing on the ground, drawing everyone's attention.
** The first time Gang-du wields a sign is both funny and awe-inspiring.
** A black comedy moment; a bunch of fleeing citizens run into a food trailer to hide from the monster, and lock out a woman who is seconds too late. The monster then barrels towards them... only to run right past the woman and smash straight into the food trailer. LaserGuidedKarma indeed.
** A moment that's funny and poignant at the same time: On the family's way to find Hyun-seo and escape the doctors, Gang-du gets out of the van, and he starts running into the fumes as it drives in front of him. Hee-bong explains that he's trying to disinfect himself so he doesn't pass tje virus to anyone, especially not Hyun-seo when he finds her.
** The way everyone cowers on the floor after Gang-du makes his second break out of quarantine, and threatens to spread the virus to everyone. The moment he squirts a syringe full of his blood the doctors duck for cover.
* HeartwarmingMoments:
** The scene where the family [[ImagineSpot imagines]] Hyun-seo is with them and they all feed her..
** Hyun-seo doing anything she can to protect the young hobo child.
** The ending, with [[spoiler: Gang-du and Se-joo eating together]].
** Hee-bong telling Nam-il and Nam-joo to respect Gang-du a little more.
* GenreBusting: It's generally classified as a horror movie, although it has elements of a political satire, a hostage film, a disaster film, an action movie and a family dramedy.
* MomentOfAwesome:
** [[spoiler: When the creature is finally killed.]]
** Nam-joo firing that [[spoiler: flaming arrow right into the monster's eye. What was especially special about that scene was how all of the BGM faded away, and all we heard was that arrow launching from the bow...]]
** Also, Nam-il gets a CMOA when he has to escape from the office building.
** As soon as he learns there's no virus, Gang-du, despite under anaesthetic, breaks out of the military hospital to continue his search for his siblings and ultimately Hyun-seo.
* {{Narm}}: The scene where the Park family mourns for Hyun-seo (who is still missing by the way) in the shelter. It's jarring that they ended up rolling on the floor while crying which makes the viewers wonder if they should find this scene sad or funny.
* NarmCharm: Gang-du is a little overly sensitive at times. But you can't deny his massive heart.
* SurprisinglySimilarCharacters: Park Gang-du and Park Dong-jin from ''Film/SympathyforMrVengeance''. Both men have had their wives leave them and are dysfunctional single parents having to raise their daughters by themselves. Both have had their daughters taken away from them and have gone out of their way to avenge them. The difference between them is, Dong-jin is terribly lost with his daughter gone, and he has no one else to go to for comfort, and since his adversaries are human, his actions paint him as no better than her kidnappers. What's more, Dong-jin is rich and LonelyAtTheTop. Gang-du, on the other hand, is poor and working class, [[spoiler: makes up for the death of his daughter by raising the orphan boy she protected]], has his father and siblings as emotional support, despite how much his brother and sister look down on him, and the fact that his enemy is a simple predator makes his actions much more heroic. Also, both are played by Song Kang-ho
* SpaceWhaleAesop: Don't dump toxic chemicals into the river... or a giant monster will come out and eat your people.
* TearJerker: This is one of the few movies that realizes just how tragic the AttackOfTheFiftyFootWhatever would be.
** Mr. Yoon's suicide. Need anything more be said?
** The Park family's mourning Hyun-seo, before it goes from sad to [[MoodWhiplash hilarious]].
** Another MoodWhiplash occurs when Gang-du cheerfully admits that he had the creature's blood sprayed on his face... only for him to be tackled by men and shoved into a body bag, screaming for his father.
** Gang-du's reaction to the [[spoiler: loss of his father]] . He tearfully kneels beside the body just as the doctors are coming to recapture him and he urges his siblings to get away while they still can.
** Gang-du, in quarantine for the second time, should be knocked out by the anaesthetic they gave him, but he's so anguished and anxious to save Hyun-seo that he just sits there, muttering in a desperate daze, so the doctors finally ask him what's wrong with him, and the American finally believes him as though he had heard this for the first time.

** Gang-du. Loses his daughter, blamed by his siblings, and targeted for carrying an imaginary virus... even his [[spoiler:victory over the creature costs him something big.]] Is it any wonder he cries every 20 onscreen minutes?
** Hyun-seo. Gets captured and trapped by the monster in an enclosed sewer space, missing her family and imagining the food she could eat when she escapes.
