* {{Anvilicious}}: The 2009 TV series has an unsubtle {{subtext}} of "Look after the natural world or it will eat you."
* MagnificentBastard: Torrence is possessed of a singular charm and wit that makes it easy to see why his men follow him so blindly.
* MoralEventHorizon: In the 2009 TV serial, Torrence crosses it either when he orders Bill and Major Coker to be fed to Triffids to get them out of the way, or when he threatens to kill Susan and Lucy (two children) if Bill doesn't arrive at a solution to the Triffid plague.
* NightmareFuel:
** The Triffids and their feeding habits; even in the movie version they manage a few unsettling moments.
** Just as terrifying is the blinding. Thousands of people die horrible deaths, because they looked up. And who wouldn't have that night?
** The 2009 TV drama had a scene in the hospital where Mason is confronted with blinded nurses holding squawling babies. It was unsurprisingly cut, but can be seen in the deleted scenes on the DVD.
* SpecialEffectsFailure:
** The anti-triffid guns that [[TrailersAlwaysLie feature prominently in publicity stills but rarely on screen]] in the 1981 series. The firing effect had to be done with ChromaKey, early-1980s Chroma Key at that. It looked more like a ''DoctorWho'' energy weapon effect than the DeadlyDisc projectiles they were supposed to be, and the guns only got fired on-screen once. Averted by the actual triffid models, which look pretty good, even if the occasional close-up of someone getting hit by a stinger makes it very obvious that it's a foam-rubber prop.
