* AwesomeButImpractical: Topping out your character isn't worth it that much, as the final 6 levels require ''double the EXP gained over the previous 44'', and the reward for persevering is only 46 life points, 9 strength, 11 defense and 6 luck.
* SugarWiki/AwesomeMusic: Most of the soundtrack. Remarkable in that the game's composers, Masanori Hikichi and Miyoko Kobayashi, are obscure even by video game music standards.
** [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wVAPcIzQFwc Those Who Stand In My Way,]] the boss music, deserves particular mention, as does, of course, [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=774VbcSFodU Overcoming Everything,]] the FinalBoss music.
** [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F_H1PTP_w78 Inside the Door,]] which plays during the Resurrection cutscenes, is also very good.
** The overworld themes, [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fy_CZu0wmeA The Departure]] and [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7u4NBQGbJ6A Further Into the Wide World]] are also suitably fitting and epic.
** The music for Crysta, [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C8A9LGyANP8 A Place to Return to,]] is peaceful, wistful, and just slightly sad -- perfectly fitting for Crysta.
** [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PS-p-rB_J3g Prime Blue]] is surprisingly detailed and majestic [[LongSongShortScene despite only playing in magishops.]]
** [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NvXHXTHY4oA Hometown.]]
* BigLippedAlligatorMoment: The entire Astarica sequence. [[spoiler: Some unknown voice commands Ark to drink from a goblet, which sends him into a fever dream featuring expies of various allies, culminating in a scene where Overworld Elle acts out-of-character and kills two people before mocking Ark who apparently dies from drinking out of a goblet.]] Nothing within the game hints at any of this, it doesn't affect the plot and never comes up ever again. Ark even comments to this effect afterwards.
* CompleteMonster: King Henry. [[spoiler:He raided a village and killed all of its inhabitants for treasure...except for a young girl he orphaned himself, who he only keeps around to wait for her to spit out the secret of the treasure.]] He's also described as an extremely oppressive tyrant by the townspeople.
* GeniusBonus: [[spoiler:The resurrection of life on Earth follows the order shown in the Book of Genesis.]]
** Also, [[spoiler:Crysta wasn't an original creation of Dark Gaia, it was merely a copy of Storkholm. This fits with the Biblical saying that Satan cannot create original life.]]
* GermansLoveDavidHasselhoff: This game is often nicknamed as "The European VideoGame/ChronoTrigger". As in a JRPG that got some people of the other side of the Atlantic pretty jealous because it was not released there. Although the game wasn't financially successful, it got a very devoted cult following.
* HellIsThatNoise: [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qnb1AlyD2dk This]] song, which plays near the portal and in various ruins.
* MemeticBadass: Ark.
* {{Narm}}: Mainly due to the GoodBadTranslation.
* NationalStereotypes: Yunkou depicts a highly unflattering portrayal of China. The townsfolk there do not speak properly unlike the other people around the world, and the town itself is polluted and unclean, with a brownish coloration outside and ugly pipes and vents on the insides. [[NoExportForYou This was probably one of the many reasons Terranigma never got exported to the USA]].
* StrawmanPolitical: There's quite some confusion about Louis' political orientation. Most players call him a communist, but he has also been called a conservative. On the other hand, Jean's idea to use taxes to advance production, city infrastructure, technology, and cultural life could also be seen as a more refined communist position. One could argue that Louis simply represents populism in general in opposition to Jean's authentic and informed political decision-making.
* TheScrappy: Perel, the annoying stereotypical black 90s skateboarding kid, who for some reason gets to be one of Ark's closest allies on the surface world.
** Meilin also annoys quite a few players, and she gets ''even more'' screentime.
* ThatOneBoss: '''Bloody Mary'''. She has higher HP than any of the bosses before her, while coupling it with [[MarathonBoss insane defense]]. Her attacks are also incredibly powerful. Fortunately (perhaps as an act of mercy), she's the only boss you can use magic on.
* TheWoobie: Ark in the ending, and earlier when he realizes [[spoiler:what his purpose is]].
