* SugarWiki/AwesomeArt: The first two volumes were drawn by Shane Davis, and they look ''beautiful''. Ardian Syaf also proved himself a worthy replacement for volume 3.
* BaseBreakingCharacter
** Clark Kent. Fans are conflicted over how "human" Superman should be, how sincere the Clark Kent identity is, his place as TheAce, and of course, accusations that he has to be dragged into saving the day instead of just being TheCape.
** Jimmy Olsen. While he has a lot of fans (see EnsembleDarkhorse bellow), there some (mostly Lois Lane fans) who think he's a SpotLightStealingSquad and a CreatorsPet.
* BrokenBase:
** Several issues that are particularly contentious in the fanbase are: the change in the cause for Krypton's destruction (some hate the idea of it having an intergalactic conspiracy behind it as a MythArc), the occasional speechifying by characters, and from the fact that JMS is seen as a ScrappyCreator by several superfans (being the [[WriterRevolt contested-author]] of Franchise/SpiderMan's ComicBook/OneMoreDay, and his abandoned runs on Superman with the Grounded story-arc and on Franchise/WonderWoman with the Odyssey story-arc.)
** For fun, [[SchmuckBait go to an online forum]] and argue about this comic being better or worse than ''Film/ManOfSteel'' or ''The ComicBook/{{New 52}}'' Superman.*
* CompleteMonster: General Zod from volume 3. He starts a civil war on his home planet of Krypton and tries to kill Jor-el, even though he's Zod's brother. When defeated, he helps an enemy race destroy Krypton, deciding if he can't rule it no one will. He also makes said aliens promise not one kryptonian will survive, ensuring the deaths of billions. When Zod discovers Kal-el, his own nephew, escaped the planet's destruction, Zod becomes obsessed with killing someone he hasn't even met. When Zod reaches Earth, he pretends to be Superman's friend, while secretly turning the rest of the world against him. Zod later tries to kill Superman with kryptonite, watching with sadistic glee as his own nephew experiences agonizing pain. When this fails, Zod threatens to kill Superman's mother, just to spite him. When Superman is de-powered by red sun energy, Zod slowly tortures him, only sparing Superman's legs so he will have something to kneel with. A power-hungry OmnicidalManiac with a frightening sadistic streak, General Zod is the worst vilain Earth One Superman has encountered thus far.
* EnsembleDarkhorse: If the reviews are anything to go by, it's Jim Olsen.
* IronWoobie: Superman himself, considering the amount of things he has to endure in order to save the world.
