* AmericansHateTingle: The series had a pretty cold reception in the USA (it's the 12th lowest rated show on Anime News Network). The widget nature of the show and the fact that the "straight" dub was the one aired on Creator/AdultSwim are probably the biggest reasons.
** For what it's worth, just about everyone (including the cast and crew at ADV) agrees that the gag dub is the superior version, in that it's actually watchable.
* HarsherInHindsight: The GagDub's slams against Music/MichaelJackson and James Gandolfini come off a bit mean these days since both men died unexpectedly.
* MemeticMutation: BELGIAN WAFFLES!!!!!
* TakeThat: While the original was mostly shoutouts, the GagDub skewered just about everything, including itself.
** UsefulNotes/GeorgeWBush's administration is a frequent target.
--->"Attention. Attention. Radar has detected an armed nuclear missil—I'm sorry, a 'weapon of mass destruction' heading for our country."
** So many jokes about gay culture any time the landlord is on screen.
* WhatDoYouMeanItsNotForKids: The commercials on Creator/AdultSwim made it pretty easy for viewers to mistake the show as the kids, until you see the words "Super" "Milk" "Chan" show up on a black screen. Plus the show is rated TV-14 (or TV-PG for the Vintage episodes).
** The Gag Dub makes it even worse, slapping a TV-MA for its frequent harsh cursing.
* WhatDoYouMeanItWasntMadeOnDrugs: There's a scene in the Anime that falls straight in to DerangedAnimation that ends with (in the GagDub) Hanage declaring the only explanation for the scene is "These drugs are fuckin' AWESOME"
