!!The Series as a whole:
* AccidentalInnuendo: The Mario Bros getting larger from eating mushrooms and the general strangeness of the setting has many fans citing it as a metaphor for drugs, and is often portrayed in fanwork as such, although [[PlayedForLaughs for laughs.]]
* AlternativeCharacterInterpretation: For a series that doesn't usually develop a detailed story or detailed characters, there is a lot of room for interpretation.
** Mario (and Luigi) himself: Mario is a ruthless OneManArmy killing anything in his path, not caring if his foes WANT to hurt him or not, captures countless lands, and basically waged a war against a rivaling kingdom with many casualties on their side, just to rescue a princess.
** Some argue that Mario is genuinely good, but a HeroicComedicSociopath. He genuinely wants to save Peach, but he has too much fun basically slaughtering the equivalent to entire armies.
** Peach and Bowser have the 'kidnapping' thing going on to make money, since only Mario and Luigi can get coins out of those blocks. The paradigm of the kidnapping is itself a food for thought (with ideas ranging from Bowser's feelings being ''mutual'', to Peach having a submissive fantasy and ''enjoying'' being kidnapped); the following websites and video channels have dug deep into this:
*** Cracked had a lot of fun with the interpretation that Bowser is actually in love with Peach but bad at expressing it; Peach has conflicting feelings and notably never denies being the ''mother'' of Bowser Jr. when Bowser Jr. claims she is. Bowser is also a WellIntentionedExtremist, who captures the Yoshis because they're an ecological menace (they eat ''anything''), until he finds time to find a permanent solution to the crisis, as he ''captures'' them rather than killing them. He may also be the only person capable of ruling the land, as he has time to build, maintain and run seven castles simultaneously, manages to conquer and subdivide the lands into more effective zones, ''and'' find time to kidnap Peach. He essentally keeps trying to perform a BenevolentAlienInvasion but it keeps getting screwed up by Mario...by the way, where ''was'' he while Bowser was doing this anyway?
*** [[http://www.gamesradar.com/classicradar-the-sexual-politics-of-the-mushroom-kingdom/ This old article on GamesRadar from 2008 takes it further by painting Peach as "a self-serving harlot with the morals of an alley cat on heat and no higher priority in life than the massaging of her own needy ego." Peach-haters will have a blast reading this.]]
*** Even Game Theory [[AccidentalPun got in the game]] [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e_xbSMK390s by posting this popular (and rather disturbing) video about Peach's...issues.]]
*** A WebAnimation/HowItShouldHaveEnded video portrays Bowser as attempting to make peace treaties with Princess Peach due to Mario always killing his people.
** Professor E. Gadd gets this thanks to Bowser Jr. using his Paintbrush in ''VideoGame/SuperMarioSunshine''. AbsentMindedProfessor who gets his stuff stolen fairly often, or [[TheChessmaster Chessmaster]] arms dealer using ObfuscatingStupidity to [[PlayingBothSides Play Both Sides]]?
** Waluigi. He was initially added to the cast because Wario needed a doubles partner for Mario Tennis, but he creates plenty of discussion, both serious and not so serious. WordOfGod goes into no more detail than "he's not related to anyone, he's just Wario's friend," and his mere presence has some weird implications regarding Mario, Luigi and Wario: Mario is the original, Luigi is a reflection of Mario (somewhat similar, but [[{{Foil}} different in certain ways]]), Wario is also a reflection (Wario is Mario's EvilCounterpart). Waluigi is a reflection of a reflection.
** Bowser. Idiotic overly macho king, or obfuscating stupidity on a political mastermind? I.e., his kingdom is all lava and igneous rocks. Peach's isn't. And the best way to gain political power in a monarchy is to marry into it.
** Rosalina is officially depicted as a mysterious woman with some kind of power over the very cosmos. Much like other characters, her exact role isn't given too much detail (apart from an unlockable backstory in the [[VideoGame/SuperMarioGalaxy game]] that first introduced her, and even that seems to be disregarded sometimes). That hasn't stopped fans from frequently interpreting her to be some sort of goddess (or if you go by the Judaeo-Christian line of thought, The Virgin Mary).
** Another one is whether Bowser Jr. is a [[ChildProdigy mechanical genius that builds his own machines]] or simply a [[SpoiledBrat spoiled rich kid who gets his father to buy them for him.]] Nothing in the main series suggests one possibility is any more likely than the other, and the spin-offs give conflicting opinions: in ''Fortune Street'', itís implied that Junior at the very least ''designs'' some of his own mechs, while in ''Super Smash Brothers'' itís implied that the Junior Clown Car, at least, was indeed a gift from his father. Itís also unclear whether he does any repairs on his machines himselfó''New Super Mario Bros Wii'' seems to hint that he is indeed capable of doing his own patch-work repairs, while ''Mario & Luigi: Dream Team'' hints that he has a group of Monty Moles responsible for repairing the Junior Clown Car.
** Toadette is not one of the few female presenting Toad, she is just more feminine than others and stands out amongst her androgynous peers.
* AnimationAgeGhetto: The series suffers from this due to its cartoony, family-friendly nature - especially when compared to other video game series that are popular, but have higher content ratings suited to more adult audiences. The creators in fact actively [[DefiedTrope defy]] this trope, as the games are for all ages much like Creator/{{Pixar}} movies. [[http://www.nintendo.co.jp/ir/en/library/events/111028qa/03.html According to the late Satoru Iwata]], the perception of ''Mario'' as a "childish" franchise was a problem that Nintendo wasn't too pleased about, and they actively worked on having the franchise appeal to all age groups, similarly, Miyamoto has repeatedly stressed how the series' creators tend to fall victim to this trope and design the all-ages ''Mario'' games as if they were specifically for children just because they're played by kids. For example, Creator/KojiKondo [[https://www.nintendo.co.uk/Iwata-Asks/Iwata-Asks-Super-Mario-Galaxy/Volume-3-The-Sound-Team/2-A-Sound-That-Defines-Mario/2-A-Sound-That-Defines-Mario-205066.html famously rejected]] music composed for ''VideoGame/SuperMarioGalaxy'' that was unintentionally designed to appeal to children[[note]]as a subconscious result of this trope, apparently[[/note]] and was written based on the presumption of Mario being a KidAppealCharacter. Kondo refuted that "Mario is cool" and that he never thought of him as cute, and that Mario's games are "cool adventure games" at their heart.
* ArchivePanic: This is a series that has been going strong since the early to mid 1980's, has spawned numerous main series games, and so many spinoffs and cameo appearances that it reaches ''triple digit territory''. And that's not even counting the substantial amount of tie-in material, such as many comic book appearances, several OVA, a long-running manga, a live action movie, and the DiC cartoon series. To say the least, trying to even ''collect'' all of the series, much less sit through all of it, is an exercise in futility.
* AwesomeEgo: Bowser is boastful and arrogant despite his repeated defeats from Mario. His fans however, agree he lives up to that, and when he doesn't fight Mario, he usually does.
* BaseBreaker: [[BaseBreaker/SuperMarioBros Has its own page]]
* BizarroEpisode: The US ''VideoGame/SuperMarioBros2'' (known as ''Super Mario USA'' in Japan) has little to do with the rest of the main platformer series, and is revealed to be AllJustADream in the end. This is largely due to it being a DolledUpInstallment of ''VideoGame/DokiDokiPanic'', though this hasn't prevented the game from influencing the series in many subtle ways.
* BreatherBoss: Has had a few in some games, such as The Big Bully in ''VideoGame/SuperMario64'' and Topmaniac and the Undergrunt Gunner in ''VideoGame/SuperMarioGalaxy''.
* BrokenBase: Plenty to go around here.
** Such as which Mario games are better the 2D platformers or the 3D platformers. Was ''VideoGame/SuperPaperMario'' and/or ''VideoGame/PaperMarioStickerStar'' good changes to the series or should the series go back to being RPG games? Does the ''VideoGame/NewSuperMarioBrothers'' games honor the original games legacy or are they awful cash-in games that are barely any different from each-other? There are also other issues such as if you prefer the American or Japanese version of ''VideoGame/{{Super Mario Bros 2}}'' and both camps have their reasons why.
** Which is the better voice for Mario, Charles Martinet's work as Mario ever since ''VideoGame/SuperMario64'', or Captain Lou Albano from ''WesternAnimation/TheSuperMarioBrosSuperShow''? [[TakeATHirdOption Or should Nintendo hire a new voice actor?]]
** NOA's old storyline about the Mario series such as how Mario & Luigi are plumbers from Brooklyn who went to the Mushroom Kingdom via a Magic Pipe and that the Koopalings are Bowser's children. Plenty of these aspects were either toned down or retconned in which certain older fans have complained about this while younger fans either accepted it as Canon and/or mention that a lot of the things we heard about were just mistranslations and/or never brought up within the games themselves. But then again the series' storyline has been a somewhat divisive issue with fans in general.
** The topic how Rosalina should sound is a hot-topic amongst fans. She usually has an [[PowerEchoes echo]] to her voice but newer games removed it. Many enjoy the echo because it differentiates her from other characters and makes her seem less mortal. There's also differing opinions about what pitch her voice should be, anything from low and deadpan to high like Peach's.
** Whether the games should have full voice acting (as in ''VideoGame/SuperMarioSunshine'') or not depends on the fan and is often debated.
** Fans debate about whether the ''Mario'' franchise has "lost its magic" after a certain point, with the games becoming more derivative and with less heart and personality put into them. A frequent claim is that this happened after ''VideoGame/SuperMarioGalaxy'': its [[VideoGame/SuperMarioGalaxy2 direct sequel]] is agreed to be more formulaic with more of an ExcusePlot, the "[[ItsTheSameNowItSucks samey]]" ''VideoGame/NewSuperMarioBros'' sequels began to set in, and the other 3D platformers and spinoffs became more derivative as well (most notoriously ''VideoGame/PaperMarioStickerStar''). However, the franchise is still going strong, and some fans argue that it's still capable of putting out original, memorable titles such as ''VideoGame/SuperMario3DWorld'' and especially ''VideoGame/SuperMarioMaker''.
** The premiere of Captain Toad has prompted a ''lot'' of argument about how he relates to the original Toad and the leader of the Toad Brigade (the original form of Captain Toad from ''VideoGame/SuperMarioGalaxy'', who was at the time identified by the Prima guides and a Nintendo-licensed trading card game as ''the'' Toad). This has further prompted argument about whether there IS a primary Toad, or if every instance of a playable or unique Toad is in fact just a randomly selected member of the race who happens to be one of Peach's Mushroom Retainers (of which there are as many as ''46''). %%According to scrupulous counting of the Toads from the All-Stars Lost Levels.
** The idea of the characters as {{Animated Actor}}s, based on a comment made by Miyamoto. Some people love the idea and treat it as if it's the truth, while others dislike the idea and claim that it devalues Mario's adventures. When the theory was confirmed to be true for ''VideoGame/SuperMarioBros3'' (but ''only'' for that game so far), fans cried out "IKnewIt" and "childhood ruined" in roughly equal numbers.
* CantUnHearIt: Despite the competition some of them face from some older fans of the cartoons, all of the voices get this, but Mario's voice by Charles Martinet ''especially'' qualifies, considering most parodies of the series base their Mario voices on his own.
* ComicBookTime: Mario and Luigi are reportedly about 26 years old, according to Nintendo of Japan. So that means, given the fact that the series has been around for 34 years, they should be about 60 years old?
* CompleteMonster: [[VideoGame/SuperPaperMario Dimentio]] and [[VideoGame/LuigisMansionDarkMoon King Boo]].
* CrackShip: Although it's really just a joke ship, after Shigeru Miyamoto ([[TrollingCreator jokingly]]) claimed to be Bowser Jr's mother in [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uu2DnTd3dEo this short interview video]], a lot of [[HoYay Miyamoto x Bowser fanart]] suddenly cropped up.
* CrazyAwesome: The series (and most characters) as a whole. Especially Wario, Waluigi and Bowser.
* CreepyCute: Most of the series' AdorableEvilMinions are this. Case in point, Boos--roundish ghosts with beady eyes and sharp fangs...that also let out [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yBgcoV5Wx7Q adorably high-pitched cackles]] whenever they spot you, and stick out their tongues like {{Bratty Half Pint}}s.
* CounterpartComparison:
** Rosalina and [[Disney/{{Frozen}} Elsa]] have been compared to each other a lot. Both are [[HairOfGoldHeartOfGold blonde]] "not princesses" who are often depicted wearing [[TrueBlueFemininity simple yet elegant blue dresses]], both have [[BrokenBird tragic pasts punctuated by loneliness]] and both are [[EnsembleDarkhorse incredibly popular]].
** Creator/ShigeruMiyamoto himself mentioned that Mario is incredibly similar to MickeyMouse in plenty of ways.
** Mario and ''ComicStrip/{{Popeye}}'' being compared is by no means new. Mario, Pauline and Donkey Kong (and later on, Mario, Peach and Bowser) share a character dynamic similar to Popeye, Olive Oyl and Bluto. Mario's first game was originally supposed to star Popeye.
** Mario is also similar to Franchise/SpiderMan, another [[SeriesMascot company mascot]] (for Creator/MarvelComics). Just like Mario, Spidey is an [[TheEveryman everyman]] WorkingClassHero with [[FunPersonified a lovable, fun]] [[NiceGuy and friendly]] personality and is frequently depicted as the JackOfAllStats among other characters from his respective company. In addition, both characters are depicted as {{Shotoclone}}s in their most famous [[VideoGame/SuperSmashBros fighting]] [[VideoGame/MarvelVsCapcom game]] appearances. Mario's All-Star Mode congratulations screen in ''VideoGame/SuperSmashBros for Nintendo 3DS'' is even a reference to the famous "upside-down kiss" scene from ''Film/SpiderMan''.
** If there is a character that shares many similarities with Waluigi, it would be [[WesternAnimation/WackyRaces Dick Dastardly]].
* DeathOfTheAuthor:
** To much of the fandom, the WordOfGod confirming that the Koopalings are not related to Bowser was received poorly.
** The WordOfGod announcing that Toads are [[TaxonomicTermConfusion not mushroom-people]] like the Goombas but merely ''midgets wearing mushroom caps'' also raised some hackles. There was also announcement that Toad and Toadette are not considered to be related, but this merely fueled an already BrokenBase between the faction of the fandom that interpreted them as brother and sister and those who thought they were in a relationship.
* DemonicSpiders: The series has two main ones: Hammer Bros., and Lakitu. Hammer Bros. because they lob a barrage of hammers at you, which is jarring since you mostly jump over most hazards. Lakitu because they mostly float out of your reach and they throw the already hard-to-kill [[TheSpiny Spinies]] at you.
* DieForOurShip: While more civil shipping-wise than other fandoms, even this fandom is occasionally subject to it.
** Mario himself has been bashed and demonized in fanfiction for the sake of pairing Peach with Bowser or Luigi. Peach/Bowser fans in particular like to write off him as a JerkAss who doesn't like Peach, only the thrill of the chase that comes with saving her from Bowser. The opposite happens with Mario/Peach fans, and while more of a JustifiedTrope [[BigBad in that case]], it still ignores his JerkWithAHeartOfGold side.
** Tomboyish Princess Daisy is bashed by people who want to pair Luigi with Peach or Rosalina and [[YaoiFangirl those hung up on Luigi being gay]].
** In the anime film ''Super Mario Bros: The Great Plan to Rescue Princess Peach'', Prince Hal from the Flower Kingdom comes under fire from this due to him being Peach's fiancee. In other words, messing up the [=MarioxPeach=] ending. Thankfully for them, Hal is a CanonForeigner who will never show up in the games.
** Rosalina is a huge BaseBreaker already, never mind shipping. Many Mario/Peach fans and Luigi/Daisy fans are very wary of her because she has no love interest, the assumed ShipTease between her and the Bros., and the fact that that Mario/Rosalina and Luigi/Rosalina are fairly popular.
** Pauline quite possibly gets the worst of this of all. She gets bashed horribly by Peach/Mario fans. She's his ''ex''-girlfriend and they're just friends now but shippers act like she's constantly trying to seduce Mario. There's also a great deal of SlutShaming due to Pauline's attire and makeup in comparison to Peach's PrincessClassic style.
** It's not unknown for fans of Captain Syrup and Wario together to be hostile towards Mona of ''VideoGame/WarioWare'' for having a PrecociousCrush on the man.
** In general, any ship that is not Mario/Peach, Luigi/Daisy or Waluigi/Rosalina is not well received by the shippers.
* DorkAge:
** The [=GameCube=]/GBA era is occasionally believed to be one. The series' main release at the time was ''VideoGame/SuperMarioSunshine'', which was somewhat controversial for its unconventional gameplay mechanics and giving classic characters like Peach and Bowser subpar voice acting and shallow, generically cartoonish personalities. Along with this, the franchise began to be oversaturated in spinoffs (particularly sports games), and the ''VideoGame/MarioParty'' subseries was becoming a FranchiseZombie. On the other hand, some of the best-loved ''Mario'' RPG games were released around that time, such as the first two ''VideoGame/PaperMario'' games and ''VideoGame/MarioAndLuigiSuperstarSaga'', and ''Sunshine'' has become somewhat VindicatedByHistory, so [[NostalgiaFilter some people look back at that era more fondly nowadays]].
** Some people claim that the 3DS/[=Wii U=] era is one. Likely due to the immense success of the linear, [[StrictlyFormula formulaic]] ''VideoGame/NewSuperMarioBros'' games, some fans claim that ''Mario'' games in other genres (such as ''VideoGame/SuperMario3DLand'', ''VideoGame/MarioAndLuigiPaperJam'' and especially ''VideoGame/PaperMarioStickerStar'') are being watered down to be more similar to ''NSMB'' and possibly to compete with mobile gaming,[[note]]the most popular smartphone games tend to be overly simplistic[[/note]] losing their charm and their "magic" in the process. The ''NSMB'' subseries itself was accused of {{sequelitis}} as well until after ''VideoGame/NewSuperLuigiU'', when no further games from the subseries were announced/released for existing consoles.
* DracoInLeatherPants:
** Bowser. Despite his [[PetTheDog redeeming qualities]], he has committed evil plenty of times and has failed to learn from any of his defeats.
** Popular RPG villains are subject to this, especially Count Bleck of VideoGame/SuperPaperMario, a textbook WoobieDestroyerOfWorlds.
* EarWorm: Creator/KojiKondo and others have composed many memorable tunes for the series. See [[AwesomeMusic/SuperMarioBros here]] for more details.
* EnsembleDarkHorse: [[EnsembleDarkHorse/SuperMarioBros Has its own page]].
* EscapistCharacter: Mario was designed with this in mind.
* EvenBetterSequel: Often what fans think of ''VideoGame/SuperMarioBros3'' compared to the original, as well as the common opinion on ''VideoGame/SuperMarioGalaxy2'' when compared to its predecessor.
* EvilIsCool:
** Bowser is one of the most beloved and classic video game villains of all time. He's also one of the few ''Mario'' characters that has a fleshed-out personality, and is praised by many fans for looking and acting like an outright {{badass}} in a world filled with characters that are generally cheery, silly and cartoonish. Even though he suffers VillainDecay intermittently, he is able to make up for it by reversing it in games like ''VideoGame/SuperMarioGalaxy''.
** Many of the RPG game villains. [[VideoGame/MarioAndLuigiBowsersInsideStory Fawful]] was so cool he ended up an EnsembleDarkhorse because of it, [[VideoGame/SuperPaperMario Dimentio]] went the same way, [[VideoGame/MarioAndLuigiSuperstarSaga Cackletta]], [[VideoGame/MarioAndLuigiBowsersInsideStory Midbus]], [[VideoGame/PaperMarioTheThousandYearDoor the Shadow Queen, X-Nauts]], and [[VideoGame/MarioAndLuigiDreamTeam Antasma]] all have a pretty dedicated fandom due to their evil acts and general coolness.
** Wario was so cool he became a BreakOutCharacter and got his own franchise.
** Fans have been clamouring for [[VideoGame/SuperMarioBros2 Wart]] to return since 1988.
* FanPreferredCouple: Technically the vast majority of them fits, considering the ExcusePlot nature of the games. Examples include:
** [[RescueRomance Mario/Peach]][[note]]Although it's starting to become the OfficialCouple.[[/note]]
** [[MasculineGirlFeminineBoy Luigi/Daisy]]
** [[StockholmSyndrome Bowser/Peach]]
** [[BirdsOfAFeather Yoshi/Birdo]]
** [[AmazonChaser Mario/Daisy]]
** [[WeaknessTurnsHerOn Luigi/Peach]]
** [[OppositesAttract Mario/Rosalina]]
** [[IncestYayShipping Mario/Luigi]]
** [[LesYay Peach/Daisy]]
** [[LesYay Peach/Rosalina]]
** [[LookalikeLovers Toad/Toadette]]
** [[PairTheSpares Luigi/]][[NotSoDifferent Rosalina]]
** [[ShipsThatPassInTheNight Waluigi/Rosalina]]
** [[JustFriends Mario/Pauline]] (In which some fans point that they were the OfficialCouple in ''VideoGame/DonkeyKong'')
* FandomBerserkButton:
** The game is called ''Super Mario Brothers'', NOT ''Super Mary-Oh Brothers'', as some old Mario commercials would lead you to believe. Also it's not literally pronounced "Bros", it's just short for "Brothers".
** Asking for ''Super Mario Bros. 4'' to be made will lead irked fans to pointing out that ''it already exists'' - only it was called ''VideoGame/SuperMarioWorld'' in the US.
** Mario and Luigi's last names are ''not'' Mario - as far as Creator/{{Nintendo}} themselves are concerned, they have no last names.
** While many fans will seriously debate that Peach and Rosalina are related, stating Peach is Rosalina's mother is not something that most serious fans enjoy people throwing around. Even worse is thinking Luigi is Rosalina's father.
** Luigi and Mario are twins however many don't realize this, due to either not playing the ''Yoshi's Island'' game or because they falsely believe all twins are identical. Assuming they have a large age difference amongst fans will get you laughed out.
** Just mentioning the Koopalings are Bowser's children can invoke outrageous reactions. You'll either get people who hate the concept, or you'll meet people who cry DeathOfTheAuthor and still insist they're related.
** Do yourself a favor and never bring up [[WebVideo/GameTheory MatPat's]] more controversial theories about the Mario series around the fanbase. (Especially "Mario is Mental".) [[InternetBackdraft It never ends well]].
* {{Fanon}}: Tons of it. And that's not even getting into the RPG games.
** It's not uncommon for people to believe that Daisy is no longer AmbiguouslyBrown as she spends more time hanging around the Mushroom Kingdom than in the warmer Sarasaland.
** Daisy never appears in main games because she [[DamselOutOfDistress puts up too much of a fight to be kidnapped]]. Alternatively, she so desperate to be in a main series game that she ''wants'' to be kidnapped.
** Peach and Daisy are frequently seen as cousins in fanworks.
** Daisy is frequently depicted as being chubbier than Peach and Rosalina. It was originally a derogatory concept however her fans draw her as a BigBeautifulWoman too. When combined with Peach and Rosalina they're made into BigThinShortTrio.
** Wario and Waluigi are brothers. It's ambiguous in canon but fans certainly believe it. Sometimes they're cousins to Mario and Luigi as well.
** "Clawdia Koopa" is a character well-engrained into the fandom. She is the MissingMom of Bowser Jr, and usually the Koopalings as well. Depictions differ on whether she's deceased or divorced. There are no canon references to Clawdia, she is a fan-creation.
** The Koopalings are not officially Bowser's children, but the fandom [[FanonDiscontinuity has been slow to get on board]]. Bowser Jr is considered the heir and Bowser's favorite. A fan theory makes them HappilyAdopted by Bowser, which would make them technically not related to Bowser but his children nonetheless. This was later {{Jossed}} in ''VideoGame/MarioAndLuigiPaperJam'', where Bowser treats them as bothersome minions, but even ''that'' hasn't stopped some fans.
** Rosalina being related to Peach is a common theory. She was related to Peach [[WhatCouldHaveBeen early in development]] of ''Galaxy'' however the final games hold no implications. Peach is often considered the descendant of Rosalina's brother though other fanons exist.
** Rosalina is largely considered a princess by fans.
** It was common for Rosalina to be presented as TheStoic, TheWomanWearingTheQueenlyMask, or an EmotionlessGirl however with appearances in series like ''Franchise/MarioKart'' that's changed. She's still depicted as more [[ProperLady regal]] than other characters though.
** Peach is implied to have [[InvisibleParents living parents]] however fans usually depict her as an orphan.
** According to early canon Mario and Luigi are from Brooklyn and were transported to the Mushroom Kingdom as adults. The ''VideoGame/YoshisIsland'' games show otherwise however many fans mix the two concepts: They were born in the Mushroom Kingdom, moved to New York in their childhood, but ended up back in the Mushroom Kingdom as adults. A common theory for this departure from the kingdom is that after the disastrous Shroob invasion in ''VideoGame/MarioAndLuigiPartnersInTime'' the bros' parents decided living in the Mushroom Kingdom was too dangerous to raise their children.
** Many fans think that Peach upgraded the brothers to a FirstNameBasis between ''VideoGame/SuperMarioWorld'' and ''VideoGame/{{Super Mario 64}}''.
** The concept that everyone is an AnimatedActor is a popular one, mostly due to Miyamoto likening the relationship between the characters to the trope. In fact, the characters ''are'' {{Animated Actor}}s for ''VideoGame/SuperMarioBros3'', but it's ''only'' confirmed for that game.
** "Jumpman" is a common surname for Mario and Luigi in fanworks.
** Amongst fans who see the Koopalings as Bowser's children, "Morton" is either Bowser's given name, his disceased father's name, or his deceased brother's name.
** Toad and Captain Toad are two separate characters, but a lot of fans like to make them one and the same, especially since the two are never seen together.
** An interesting bit of Luigi fanon from the ''Wii'' era involved presenting [[VideoGame/SuperPaperMario Mr. L]] as his wicked inner shadow, which seems to have been born of a historical accident -- Mr. L's debut game occured within the same era as ''Super Smash Bros. Brawl'', where Luigi was described as having an inner darkness and his LimitBreak was the MindScrew Negative Zone. This has mostly disappeared as of the Wii U era, now that Nintendo has let up on the DarkerAndEdgier characterization.
** Many fanart of Daisy depicts her with a tan, much like her appearance in the ''N64'' era. To go along with the ([[CommonKnowledge somewhat misguided]]) fact that she lives in a desert.
** A lot of the fandom [[FanonDiscontinuity has been slow to get on board with the news]] that Toads are not mushrooms and are actually a genderless race taking on gendered characteristics, and continue to view them as mushroom people with genders, especially since the latter creates ''a lot'' of confusion when it comes to Toads previously established as explicitly male and female in RPG games like ''[[VideoGame/PaperMarioTheThousandYearDoor The Thousand-Year Door]]''.
* FanNickname: The Gold and Blue Toads in ''VideoGame/NewSuperMarioBrosWii'' have been given the names Wolley and Yvan, respectively (pronounced "Wally" and "Ivan"). Less popular names given by the development team are Alla-Gold and Bucken-Berry.
* FandomRivalry: Most famously with the ''[[Franchise/SonicTheHedgehog Sonic]]'' franchise during the 90's ConsoleWars, it dissapated once Sega stopped making consoles. Now, since the two franchises have crossed over on [[VideoGame/SuperSmashBros many]] [[VideoGame/MarioAndSonicAtTheOlympicGames occasions]] since then, they have become FriendlyFandoms at most now.
* FridgeLogic:
** The manual for ''Super Mario Bros. 1'' stated that Bowser used his dark magic to turn the people of the Mushroom Kingdom into trees and ''bricks'', and Mario spent the entire game destroying the latter. So when you think about it, Mario is actually a [[MoralDissonance mass murderer.]] On the other hand, some materials depict him freeing the Toads by doing this.
** How do the many enemies that walk in a straight line and never change direction until they bump into something (such as the Koopas described under "Fridge Horror" below) get between the two objects they're walking back and forth between in the first place if they can't walk or jump over them? Does Bowser really go to all the trouble of finding countless pairs of immovable objects and putting minions between them before kidnapping Peach? How do the authorities not start to notice this pattern and take precautions to protect Peach whenever Bowser starts dropping minions between immovable objects?
** The possibility that the Super Mushroom would technically kill Mario if not for its beneficial result. Some brightly colored mushrooms can be poisonous.
** What about what happens to the coins you have that you collected when the brick blocks turn into coins when you hit the P Switch? If it turns all coins into bricks and all bricks into coins, what happens to the coins you carry?
** The idea of Mario & Luigi being born and raised in the Mushroom Kingdom instead of Brooklyn, New York has also had some folks complaining. Namely why do Mario and Luigi have their Italian accents if they were from the Mushroom Kingdom instead of New York? One could easily see Mario and Luigi's accent as TheArtifact despite how it makes their current origin story somewhat confusing the idea of Mario and Luigi having Italian accents is just too iconic for Nintendo to remove.
* FridgeHorror: Letting a Koopa bounce around in between blocks or pipes. Koopa Troopas can't get out of their shells if they're still in motion. They don't lose momentum when they hit solid objects. [[AndIMustScream Ergo, they can possibly go on stuck there forever.]]
* FriendlyFandoms: With ''Franchise/{{Pokemon}}'', as the two family-friendly series are Nintendo's biggest franchises, hold similar nostalgic value for many fans, and have similarly iconic, cartoonish mascots as their flagship characters. It's not uncommon to hear wishes for a crossover between the two outside of ''VideoGame/SuperSmashBros''.
* SugarWiki/FunnyMoments: Examples are [[Funny/SuperMarioBros here]].
* GameBreaker:
** The blue Yoshi in ''VideoGame/SuperMarioWorld''. If you grab a Koopa shell of ANY color, you can fly anywhere and easily skip whole levels at a time!
** The cape is also overpowered. A single swipe can kill most enemies in the game, and you can fly for as long as you like as long as you can build enough running speed. And flying is the only time you can get hit without taking damage.
** See [[GameBreaker/SuperMarioBros here]] for more.
* GoodBadBugs:
** The "small fiery Mario" glitch. If you hit Bowser and the axe at the same time at the end of an x-4 level, you'll start the next level as a large Mario who dies in one hit. Take a mushroom and you become small; take a Fire Flower and you become small and fiery.
** If you're small and you hit Bowser and the axe at the same time, Mario dies but the level still registers as a win, leaving Toad saying his "Thank You Mario/Luigi!" line to a blank screen.
** There's also the fact that the correct pipes in the World 8-4 PipeMaze will have the Pirahna Plants inhabiting them suddenly disappear as you approach them. This significantly reduces the potential aggravation of guessing the correct pipe.
** If you jump on the axe just as the timer reaches zero in any castle level, you'll get a huge bonus of 50,000 points. This is because of a bug in which the timer rolls over to 999 and keeps counting down from there. However, this does not work in the NES version, since it doesn't give you a time bonus for castles. This can only be done in the "Vs." (arcade) and Super Mario All-Stars versions[[note]]not to mention most, if not all versions of the [[VideoGame/SuperMarioBrosTheLostLevels Japanese Super Mario Bros. 2.]][[/note]]
* HarsherInHindsight: Two in ''Mario Super Sluggers'', both relating to the "close play" feature. At third base and home plate, if a fielder receives the ball just as a baserunner approaches, the runner can attack the fielder thereby jarring the ball loose. Since the game was released, UsefulNotes/MajorLeagueBaseball instituted two rule changes, [[TheyChangedItNowItSucks both unpopular with fans]]. In the 2014 season, MLB brought in the Posey rule which prevents catchers from blocking the plate unless they have the ball. Two seasons later, a rule was added prohibiting takeout slides unless the baserunner makes contact with the bag.

* HilariousInHindsight:
** In a magazine, Shigeru Miyamoto said "Who knows what Mario will look like in the future? Maybe [[VideoGame/SuperMario64 he'll wear metallic clothes]]?"
** In ''Mario Teaches Typing'', Mario [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FoCa04KxQQ0 sings]] about a "[[VideoGame/SuperMario64 moray eel lunging out]]".
* HypeBacklash:
** Given that the series is one of the most successful video game franchises on the planet, some people are put off by this, especially since the series and its main cast (particularly Mario himself) are a SpotlightStealingSquad among Nintendo's franchises (one notorious example of this was when almost all non-''Mario'' Toys/{{amiibo}} were difficult to find while the main ''Mario'' cast was extremely common). Some older fans view later games, particularly the ''New Super Mario Bros.'' games, as suffering this.
** [[VocalMinority Some overzealous fans]] of ''Franchise/TheLegendOfZelda'' tend to bash the ''Super Mario'' franchise simply for being more popular on an absolute scale, more iconic, and [[AnimationAgeGhetto more cartoony]] than their preferred series. This extends to the main characters of both franchises, as such fans tend to bash Mario, possibly the single biggest icon of video gaming, in order to reinforce their support for Link - even going as far as [[RonTheDeathEater labeling Mario as a sociopath]] thanks to WebVideo/GameTheory.
* IncestYayShipping:
** Toad and Toadette are very close, but Nintendo can't seem to decide what their particular relationship is. The ''Mario Kart Wii'' manual identified them as siblings, but Nintendo later confirmed they were not considered as such. This is one possible interpretation when trying to reconcile FlipFlopOfGod and FanonDiscontinuity.
** Mario and Luigi have a decent sized shipping base.
* ItsNotSupposedToWinOscars: Anyone who complains about the series' ExcusePlot nature, with fans explaining how you're not supposed to care about plot in the series. However, some fans will bring up how the Mario RPG games often had storylines a bit more than "Mario saves the Princess from Bowser in Mushroom Kingdom". Others side with Shigeru Miyamoto and his WordOfGod on how the series is always more about gameplay than anything.
* LGBTFanbase: Bowser is ''incredibly'' popular with the gay fandom, most notably with furries.
* MagnificentBastard: Fawful and, depending on the game, Bowser.
* MemeticBadass: Luigi has become this in later years, especially since the Year of Luigi. To give examples, we have [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m6PxRwgjzZw "Luigi wins by doing absolutely nothing"]], which is ExactlyWhatItSaysOnTheTin. The video became so popular it has spawned several others making similar videos. Several comments are "You don't screw with Luigi", "Now begins the age of Luigi" etc etc. And how can we ever forget his [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=03eNODCDdqY infamous death stare from Mario Kart 8?]] Many has jokingly stated that his sudden ghetto attitude in the fandom is his breaking point from being trampled so much due to his MemeticLoser status.
* MemeticLoser:
** Luigi and the Goombas (for being {{Butt Monkey}}s), and Daisy and Waluigi (for being DemotedToExtra). Luigi's example is zigzagged, since he's ''also'' a MemeticBadass... so the full meme is that absolutely nobody will ever give him credit for it.
** Princess Daisy has gotten this treatment more and more since [[EnsembleDarkhorse Rosalina]] appeared. Rosalina has appeared in ''Super Smash Bros'' and playable in a main game before Daisy, who is twenty years older than her. Since Luigi and Daisy are usually paired up, at least they can be losers together. Daisy's newfound status as TheUnfavourite loser has actually made her a lot more sympathetic and likeable as a character instead of being a widely despised [[TheScrappy scrappy]] among fans. It got worse now that a ''trampoline'' was picked as a playable costume for Mario over her in ''VideoGame/SuperMarioMaker''. However as of January 2016, [[ThrowTheDogABone Daisy is]] ''[[ThrowTheDogABone finally]]'' [[ThrowTheDogABone added as a costume]] in ''Mario Maker''.
* MemeticMutation: [[Memes/SuperMarioBros Quite a bit, actually]].
* MemeticPsychopath: Virtually every character has probably had his or her turn at being portrayed as this. Mario and Waluigi being the mos prominent examples.
* MostAnnoyingSound: Mostly toned down, but everytime you die, you get accompanied with the iconic "Prrupt!" sound byte. It's toned down because the sound byte has become iconic to portray cartoonish or humorous deaths outside the series.
* SugarWiki/MostWonderfulSound:
** The OneUp chime.
** The power-up sound.
** The pipe sound and level ending fanfare, too.
* MyRealDaddy: While nobody will deny that Creator/ShigeruMiyamoto was very influential to the series' development, Nintendo of America shaped up the setting of the ''Mario'' series of how its known today. Such as the setting of the games such as Mario & Luigi being plumbers from Brooklyn who got to the Mushroom Kingdom via a Warp Pipe in ''VideoGame/SuperMarioBros1''. to character names such as Mario, Pauline, Luigi, the Koopalings and more in fact the idea of the Koopalings being Bowser's children was NOA's idea. However due to certain actions from Shigeru such as him saying that the Koopalings are no longer Bowser's kids and what happened to ''VideoGame/PaperMarioStickerStar'' have caused plenty of InternetBackdraft.
* NeverLiveItDown:
** "Hi, I'm Daisy!" It doesn't help that while a lot of Mario fans don't play the spinoff games all that much, they ''do'' play ''MarioKart'' games, and for many ''Mario Kart: Double Dash'' was their first impression of Daisy.
** Peach's reaction to Bowser Jr. telling her that she's his mommy in ''Super Mario Sunshine'' -- or, rather, her complete ''lack'' of it. Many people (especially detractors of the character) cite it as one of the most defining examples of the princess being a complete ditz, and ignore the instances of her being portrayed competently in the series (particularly in the [=RPG=]s). Others cite it as evidence of certain fan theories pertaining to Peach's relationship with Bowser
** Peach getting kidnapped constantly is this in and out of the games.
** Mario stomps on Luigi's foot in ''Power Tennis'' as a mildly [=OOC=] act of SiblingRivalry. People always use this scene as evidence Mario is a BitchInSheepsClothing.
* NightmareFuel: [[NightmareFuel/SuperMarioBros Has a lot of it]].
* PeripheryDemographic: While the franchise was considered primarily for children at one point, it fittingly also has one of Nintendo's biggest fanbases among teenagers and adults, and started [[MultipleDemographicAppeal being marketed towards all ages]] long before ''Franchise/{{Pokemon}}'' did - Mario was even being marketed to casual non-gamer adults during the Wii era, and the franchise is frequently used for {{Geek Reference Pool}}s. There's a ''reason'' why it's the most famous and popular game series of all time.
* ReplacementScrappy:
** Bowser Jr. While he is also hated for his lackluster design (he is an {{Expy}} of [[VideoGame/SuperMarioWorld2YoshisIsland Bowser's baby self]]), he is mostly hated for replacing the [[QuirkyMinibossSquad Koopalings]] in ''VideoGame/SuperMarioSunshine''. To a lesser extent, he gets this reaction for replacing the Koopa Kids of the spinoffs as well. When WordOfGod has stated that the Koopalings are no longer considered Bowser's children and only Bowser Jr. is his true child, the hate toward him intensified.
** In an unusual twist of fate, Bowser Jr. was passed over for ''VideoGame/MarioKart8'', just as the Koopalings make their first ever playable appearance in the very same game. Instead of rejoicing, fans deemed the ''Koopalings'' the Replacement Scrappies for this reason; even within the fans who still hate Bowser Jr., there are some who criticize the overexposure of the Koopalings for taking away other ''Mario Kart'' characters (since they occupy seven slots), as well as for having already appeared too much in the ''VideoGame/NewSuperMarioBros'' games.
** ''VideoGame/SuperMarioGalaxy2'' has Lubba become this for Rosalina.
* RescuedFromTheScrappyHeap: Bowser Jr. became this in ''VideoGame/NewSuperMarioBrosWii'' after he was announced to appear alongside all Koopalings in the game. His announcement for ''VideoGame/SuperSmashBros'' for Wii U and 3DS, once again accompained by the Koopalings, was welcomed as well.
* RonTheDeathEater:
** Luigi's ended up playing the villain (usually after deciding he's tired of playing second banana to Mario) in a number of fanworks, VideoGame/SuperMarioWorld ROM hacks in particular.
** Or alternatively Mario, whether it's out of him being tired of the status quo or straight up villainization, receives this a lot.
** Happens to Bowser and Bowser Jr. as well. This is especially apparent in Koopaling-centric fanfiction that turn the former into an abusive father who neglects/punishes the Koopalings whilst playing favorites with Junior (though this isn't to say other stories don't "Death Eater" him, such as making him a rapist), while Junior himself is portrayed as a bullying, manipulative {{jerkass}} who's only heir instead of Ludwig because Bowser made him so.
* RootingForTheEmpire: Bowser is so damned likable and fun that many players find themselves wanting him to win out over the Mario Bros for once. Look at the top of the page and see how much {{Fanon}} and [[AlternativeCharacterInterpretation interpretations]] are about Bowser being the good guy. This is even more prominent during his JerkassWoobie moments. ''Bowser's Inside Story'' seems to be a shout out for such players, since it puts Bowser in the limelight.
* SacredCow:
** ''VideoGame/SuperMarioBros3'', ''VideoGame/SuperMarioWorld'' and ''VideoGame/SuperMario64'' are treated as this by the fandom and regarded as some of the finest platformers ever made. ''VideoGame/SuperMarioGalaxy'' is getting there, but the NostalgiaFilter hasn't completely kicked in yet.
** Mario himself, as he's the biggest icon of his franchise, of Nintendo and one of the biggest in gaming history. While some people dismiss him for being a dopey, [[AnimationAgeGhetto cartoonish]] {{Everyman}} VanillaProtagonist, many of his fans strongly believe that he's a universally-loved character, and will adamantly defend him from outright criticism.
* TheScrappy: [[TheScrappy/SuperMarioBros Has its own page.]]
* ScrappyMechanic: [[ScrappyMechanic/SuperMarioBros Has its own page.]]
* ShipToShipCombat: As expected from a popular series, there is a lot of this. Mario/Peach vs Bowser/Peach is by far the most common however Mario/Pauline vs Mario/Peach and Rosalina/Luigi vs Daisy/Luigi are also debated.
* SurprisinglyImprovedSequel: The original ''Super Mario Bros'' compared to ''VideoGame/MarioBros''.
* ThatOneLevel: [[ThatOneLevel/SuperMarioBros It has its own page.]]
* TheyWastedAPerfectlyGoodCharacter:
** Although Waluigi and Daisy[[note]]unless you count the ''VideoGame/SuperMarioLand'' in the main series[[/note]] have [[BaseBreaker mixed reception]], there are a plenty of fans that feel they are interesting characters in their own right and feel that Nintendo should let appear in the main games. The fact that Rosalina was playable in ''VideoGame/SuperMario3DWorld'' made many of these fans more vocal about this.
** Pauline has also been considered to be a case of this over the years as unlike Mario and DonkeyKong she never got her own game series. Not only do certain fans wish she appeared more often in the game titles, but some even ship her with Mario (in which they often point out Nintendo [[ImpliedLoveInterest never did confirm]] whether if Mario and Peach are an OfficialCouple or not).
* UglyCute: Goombas.
* UnfortunateCharacterDesign: Toad giving you the finger in the original [[VideoGame/SuperMarioBros1 Super Mario Bros.]]
* UnpopularPopularCharacter:
** In-Universe, Luigi isn't as popular or as well received as Mario is, leading to a bit of a "second banana" complex. However, he's really popular among the fanbase.
** Waluigi isn't really well-liked In-Universe either, but a sizeable portion of the fanbase genuinely likes him. Mostly through MemeticMutation.
* VanillaProtagonist: Mario was designed to be an extremely accessible character who can fit any role. He himself does not have too much personality other than cheerfulness, but it's the colorful world he inhabits and the challenges he faces that provides the true meat of the series.
* VillainDecay: Bowser tends to go [[ZigZaggedTrope back and forth]] with this to a nearly unprecedented degree; though he's usually a genuine threat in the 'core' games (ranging from downright [[VillainBall silly plots]] to [[spoiler:accidentally destroying reality after nearly conquering it]]). In spinoffs, though, he's typically little more than a comic-relief nuisance, a [[EnemyMine reluctant ally]], or even a near Woobie level ButtMonkey as in ''Mario & Luigi Superstar Saga''.
* TheWoobie:
** Luigi, being the ButtMonkey and all.
** Bowser is shown in this light in the [=RPGs=], barring ''VideoGame/PaperMario'', but especially ''[[VideoGame/MarioAndLuigiBowsersInsideStory Bowser's Inside Story]].''
* {{Woolseyism}}: The first ''[[VideoGame/SuperMarioRPG Mario]]'' [[VideoGame/SuperMarioRPG RPG]] was translated by [[VideoGame/FinalFantasyVI Ted]] [[TropeNamers Woolsey]] himself. Since then, the ''VideoGame/PaperMario'' and ''VideoGame/MarioAndLuigi'' series have done their localizations in a style not unlike Woolsey.
* WhatDoYouMeanItWasntMadeOnDrugs: A pretty common reaction to the series. See World Of Chaos on the Franchise page.

* AwesomeMusic:
** Each of the opening themes.
** Some of the covers and original songs in the episodes.
* CantUnHearIt:
** The main voice cast for ''Series/TheSuperMarioBrosSuperShow'' are often considered to be examples against the already iconic voices from the games, especially the late CaptainLouAlbano as Mario.
** Even with the Koopalings being voiced in the games since ''VideoGame/NewSuperMarioBrosWii'', those who grew up with the cartoons are more partial the Koopa Kids' original voice actors.
* CultClassic: The Saturday Morning spinoffs, particularly ''WesternAnimation/TheAdventuresOfSuperMarioBros3'' in WebVideo/TheAnnotatedSeries.

** Again, the original music in the latter two cartoons qualify.
* FountainOfMemes: Each cartoon had these. It picked up in the Saturday Morning spinoffs with ''WesternAnimation/SuperMarioWorld'' taking it UpToEleven.
* HamAndCheese: The voice acting on all three shows, particularly prevalent in the "Mama Luigi" episode of ''Super Mario World''.
* HilariousInHindsight: Mario being played by wrestler Lou Albano in ''Super Show'' became this when he wrestled in an episode each of the latter two series.
* LoveItOrHateIt: All three shows. For all the SoBadItsGood reactions it gets, there are plenty who find them to be undeserving of the attention they get.
* MemeticMutation: Too many in each series to count.
* MoralEventHorizon: In contrast to his video game counterpart, some of King Koopa's schemes have drifted into pure evil. In "Koopa Claus", he threatens to kill ''Santa Claus'', in "The Ugly Mermaid", he plans to destroy an underwater city and he comes close to feeding cave people to dinosaurs in two episodes of ''Super Mario World''.
* ReplacementScrappy:
** The [[TheOtherDarrin new voice actors]] for Mario (Walker Boone for Lou Albano), Luigi (Tony Rosato for Danny Wells) and Princess (Tracey Moore for Jeannie Elias) starting with ''[[WesternAnimation/TheAdventuresOfSuperMarioBros3 Super Mario Bros. 3]]''.
** Oogtar, who replaced Toad in ''Super Mario World'' ([[CastingGag John Stocker voiced both]]).
* TheScrappy: Fans of ''Super Show'' see the Koopa Kids in the latter two cartoons as these.
* SeasonalRot: For the reasons mentioned above, all three shows were subject to this as each aired a year apart from each other.
* SeinfeldIsUnfunny: Being the source for {{YouTube Poop}}s ([[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=suSSdHr8sog I'D SAY HE'S HOT ON OUR TAIL]] being one of the first), the content from all three cartoons becomes tiring for those who have seen them manipulated countless times.
* SoBadItsGood:
** [[ZigZaggedTrope Zig Zagged]] with ''Super Show''. Some genuinely like it while others have this opinion about it.
** Played straight with the latter two series.
* TheyJustDidntCare: They are littered with [[OffModel so many animation errors]], you don't have to pause to notice them. Of course, they ''are'' DiC cartoons...
* WhatAnIdiot: A common reaction to the heroes falling victim to easy capture. Expect these as well from the Koopas since they're {{Card Carrying Villain}}s. Has [[WhatAnIdiot/SuperMarioBros its own page.]]

* CrowningMusicOfAwesome:
** [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HTtnc38dHcE Speed of Light]] (aka, the bgm for the mattress sled scene) is considered one of the best parts of the movie, even to the detractors.
** ''[[AwardBaitSong Almost Unreal]]'' by Music/{{Roxette}}.
* BigLippedAlligatorMoment: In the middle of the film, we cut to scene of a couple starting to make out. It lasts about 30 seconds with two never-before-seen characters, and then they're never seen again.
* BrokenBase: A Horrific InNameOnly InkStainAdaptation or an amusing PragmaticAdaptation of a game series that never had much of plot to begin with? Fans of the movie often point out how the movie had to do a considerably different story often in order to somehow make a live action Mario Bros movie. While detractors often deemed this to be a horribly inaccurate movie that tried to cash in on the series' popularity in which some point out that the movie could've been more accurate [[AnimationAgeGhetto if it were animated]].
* CultClassic: For any fan of the Mario series, this is a must-see. The [[http://www.smbmovie.com/ Super Mario Bros. The Movie Archive]] is a thriving fan community devoted to the movie that's even had exclusive interviews with members of the cast and crew.
* EarWorm:
** "Somewhere My Love", the song Mario and Luigi trick the Goombas into dancing to... La, la, LA LA...
** "Walk the Dinosaur".
** "Almost Unreal" again. ''"I love when you do that hocus-pocus to me..."''
* EnsembleDarkhorse: [[http://www.mariowiki.com/Big_Bertha_%28film_character%29 Big Bertha]], the bouncer.

* SugarWiki/FunnyMoments:
** Mario and Luigi are chained as they get their picture taken, when they mistake the cameras for guns.
-->'''Mario:''' Are we dead?
** In addition, the dancing Goombas can also be seen as one of the few intentionally funny moments.
* HamAndCheese: Dennis Hopper's acting is okay in some scenes, but in others, he's clearly having fun overacting and taking his role not at all seriously.
* HarsherInHindsight: The two towers that dominate Koopa's Manhattan-inspired city, one of which looks half-destroyed (actually, it's not finished construction yet, but the visual effect is the same), and the other of which has a glowing stylized "K" on the side that looks like, depending on how you see it, either an explosion or a gaping hole. Even worse in the climax when the dimensions begin to merge, including a shot which can visually can be described as the World Trade Center ''disintegrating''.
* HilariousInHindsight:
** Lena, who is played by [[Film/HarryPotter Fiona Shaw]], tells Daisy that she [[MemeticMutation has her mother's eyes]].
** King Koopa's lair is a skyscraper with neon lights. [[spoiler: Just like in ''VideoGame/SuperMario3DWorld''.]]
* MindGameShip: Between Koopa and Daisy. Lena is ''not'' pleased.
* MoralEventHorizon: Lena [[spoiler:stabbing Yoshi]].
* NeverLiveItDown: The film is this to the [[VideoGameMoviesSuck video game movie genre as a whole]], as not only have many video game-based movies that followed become critical and commercial failures upon release, but commentators have ''always'' cited this movie whenever they refer to other video game movies on why they're such bad ideas. The film has also been cited to having greatly damaged Disney's relationship with Nintendo. Rumor has it Nintendo never forgave Disney for giving the publishing rights to the tie-in game for ''Disney/{{Aladdin}}'' to Creator/{{Sega}} as a result of the movie not meeting expectations[[note]]Fortunately for Nintendo, Creator/{{Capcom}} developed a different ''Aladdin'' game for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System around the same time the Sega Genesis game was released, but it had little involvement from Disney despite being licensed by them[[/note]] and refused to do any direct business partnerships with them in the decades that followed. Aside from Bowser making an appearance in ''Disney/WreckItRalph'' (though under Nintendo's supervision), relationships between the two haven't seen any major improvements since the film's release (especially given that Nintendo dumped Disney for Creator/{{Universal}} over theme park rights in 2015, a decision that some pin the film and the troubling relations on for the snub).
* RetroactiveRecognition: ''Franchise/HarryPotter'' fans will surely recognize [[Film/HarryPotter Aunt Petunia]] as the villainess now.
* SnarkBait: Courtesy of Podcast/RiffTrax.
%%* SoBadItsGood:
* SpecialEffectFailure: Amongst all the revolutionary visuals and complicated animatronics for Yoshi and the Goombas, the devolved King Koopa puppet looks like an escapee from a bad episode of ''Series/TheMuppetShow''.
* {{Squick}}: The fungus, in-universe. Mario in particular is constantly grossed out by it.
* TookTheBadFilmSeriously: God bless you Bob Hoskins, for ''trying'' to give a performance. And consider he's playing [[FlatCharacter Mario]], of all roles to be stuck with.
* UglyCute: Yoshi.
* VideoGameMoviesSuck:
** A lot of people believe that if the movie wasn't named "Super Mario Bros.", but rather just a futuristic dystopic comedy, it would be given a little more slack (or at least WhatDoYouMeanItWasntMadeOnDrugs).
** WordOfGod stated that the movie was made to test whether or not a movie [[InkStainAdaptation would do anything to the series's reputation]], be it positively or negatively.
* VindicatedByHistory: While by no means regarded as a masterpiece, it seems that audiences are warming up to this movie. At the time, there were no other motion pictures based on video games, and the general expectation was for a movie that matched the games closely. Looking back, it still kept the basic plot of a Mario game, and some of the changes that used to get calls of "TheyJustDidntCare" look more [[PragmaticAdaptation pragmatic]] following the release of other movies that stumbled trying to match their source material too closely. With the internet, it's easier to spot the {{Mythology Gag}}s that give it more of a ''Mario'' identity. Its established infamy and SoBadItsGood factor are also helpful, bringing about the opposite of the HypeBacklash the movie suffered when it was originally screened.
* SugarWiki/VisualEffectsOfAwesome: This film had to literally ''invent'' new technology to make much of its visual effects look as realistic as they do:
** Daisy appearing in the sand.
** Yoshi. For an animatronic puppet, it looks like it just stepped out of a time portal to the Jurassic Era.
** This also applies to a lesser extent the Goombas. All of them, '''''including''''' those only seen in the background, had [[http://www.smbmovie.com/SMBArchive/specials/interviews/12_AllanPaulMEL_2-5-11.html multiple movements built into the heads]].
** The pan over the city towards Koopa's tower. This was done by ''one man'' over a period of six months and was deemed ''impossible'' beforehand.
** The King [[spoiler:turning back into a human]].
