* AccidentalInnuendo:
** Bunnie's infamous "Nasty as a one-eyed snake, sugah." line.
** When Antoine [[{{Malaproper}} accidentally calls]] [[GettingCrapPastTheRadar fertilizer 'fraternizer']]
** The "funny kiss." This was parodied mercilessly in SonicShorts: "That wasn't funny at all!"
* {{Anvilicious}}: Par for the course in terms of Green Aesops at the time, the domain of the villainous Robotnik is cold, mechanical and brimming with pollution (a fact that Robotnik openly revels in at one point), while the semi-virtuous Freedom Fighters dwell in a lush, green forest.
* AwesomeEgo: Sonic.
* BadassDecay: Bunnie was a thoroughly inactive character in Season Two. Sonic, while still having many competent moments, also became a lot more error prone.
* BaseBreakingCharacter:
** Sally is either a poignantly developed ActionGirl and one of Sonic's best foils in the series ([[BetterThanCanon if not the entire franchise]]), or a bland, insufferable girl that [[TookALevelInDumbass lobotomised Sonic]] (and to an extent the rest of the cast) for the sake of PositiveDiscrimination. Her [[SpotlightStealingSquad upgraded role]] in the Second season, as well as her continued legacy in the comic didn't help much. And we're not even going to bring up the fans of [[StalkerWithACrush a certain pink hedgehog]].
** Fans are also completely divided over the more sinister interpretation of Robotnik, either adoring his [[KnightOfCerebus more effective and terrifying presence]] in the show, or abhorring him for being a glorified GenericDoomsdayVillain with none of the charisma of the other Eggman variants.
** The show's rendition of Sonic is either considered a far more relatable and humanised take on the usually cartoony Ace-like games character, or an obnoxious LeeroyJenkins who speaks in grating nineties slang. And let's not go into his relationship with Sally.
* BrokenBase: Was Season Two the show's GrowingTheBeard with more consistent writing and continuity or SeasonalRot with Flanderized characters and more formulaic plot lines?
* BetterThanCanon: A lot of fans consider the show's DarkerAndEdgier elements a lot more successful than Sega's attempts from the [[VideoGame/SonicAdventure late '90s]] to [[VideoGame/SonicTheHedgehog2006 mid 2000s]].
* CompleteMonster: [[MorallyAmbiguousDoctorate Dr.]] Julian [[EmperorScientist Robotnik]] is the [[BigBad absolute ruler]] of a roboticized Mobius, and is a [[KnightOfCerebus far more chilling incarnation]] than the [[WesternAnimation/AdventuresOfSonicTheHedgehog normally-bumbling]] character of Robotnik. A ruthless, ambitious backstabber with a series of treacherous moves to his count in the name of self-interest, Robotnik's first betrayal was his [[SealedEvilInACan sealing of the wizard Naugus]] in the Void. Later becoming known to the King of Mobius, Robotnik became instrumental in the King's own military victories before [[TyrantTakesTheHelm deciding to take over Mobius himself]]. Staging a coup d'état and overthrowing the King from Mobotropolis, Robotnik stole the technologies of the Roboticizer from Charles Hedgehog, and used it to forcefully convert almost all of Mobius into a [[CrapsackWorld polluted dystopia]]. [[UnwillingRoboticisation Reducing all of Mobius's inhabitants to his robotic slaves]]--[[AndIMustScream which they morally object to and fight against]]--Robotnik made fierce enemies with Charles's son [[TheHero Sonic]] and the rest of the Freedom Fighters. Robotnik would demonstrate his psychopathic nature again and again, attempting to kill, torture, or otherwise roboticize the Freedom Fighters, happily willing to jeopardize the ecosystem in doing so. Robotnik also [[BadBoss coldly abuses his own minions]], his diminutive, weak-willed nephew Snively among them, and condemns them all to die for the sake of his own life in the finale. An emotion-deficient fear-monger with nary a comedic quirk to his name, Robotnik proved one of the most vicious incarnations of Robotnik seen in the franchise.
* CreatorsPet: Both Dulcy and Sally were stated to be favorites of Ben Hurst, main writer for most of the second season. They also have a rather "conflicted" reception with the fanbase to say the least.
* CrowningMusicOfAwesome: [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7R2vFDIBToI The opening theme]] is probably the most memorable thing about the show.
* CultClassic: It only got 26 episodes which made it the shortest of all the finished Sonic cartoons (even ''WesternAnimation/AdventuresOfSonicTheHedgehog'' got a good 65), and yet it was relatively well-received compared to other Saturday-morning fare at the time and maintained a notable fanbase since then, likely helped by the Archie Comics series based upon it.
* DesignatedHero: Sonic, though not unpopular in the show per se, gets occasional criticism from this. While a fairly effective hero, Sonic is by far the most dysfunctional and arrogant of the Freedom Fighters (StrawLoser Antoine not withstanding), frequently endangering the team due to his cockiness.
* EnsembleDarkhorse:
** [[ActionGirl Bunnie]] [[HollywoodCyborg Rabbot]], which is why so many fans were understandibly upset when she was DemotedToExtra in Season Two.
** This show's incarnation of Dr. Robotnik. He only made one more appearance after this show in Sonic Underground (the Archie comics version doesn't really count because of how massively different the characterization was), and yet he's often considered the scariest and best version of the good Dr. [[Creator/JimCummings His voice actor really helped gain that reputation.]]
** Sally is considered this to some fans. There is a reason why she got a lot of roles in season 2, after all. Some fans consider her relationship with Sonic to be better then Amy's from the games, as she is not [[ClingyJealousGirl clinging]] onto him constantly, and can reign him back in when he's in the wrong as well as hold her own in a given situation. Granted she's also a BaseBreakingCharacter, since just as many think she did this a bit ''[[PositiveDiscrimination too]]'' [[SpotlightStealingSquad much]].
* EthnicScrappy: This is one of the reasons why Antoine gets a lot of hate. The character's entire concept is that he is a [[CheeseEatingSurrenderMonkeys French guy who is useless in any action-related situation]]. He also gets flak for [[FrenchJerk being rude to Sonic]], even though [[NotSoDifferent Sonic is more or less equally rude to him]]. Even [[TookALevelInBadass taking a level in badass]] in the comics didn't stop some of the hate since many felt it stripped him of any defining characteristics and reduced him to a GenericGuy with a French accent.
* HilariousInHindsight:
** The plot of "Sonic Past Cool" has the Freedom Fighters rescue dinosaurs from Robotnik, one of whom makes friends with Tails via a translator. [[VideoGame/SonicColors Seventeen years later...]]
** "Blast To The Past" two-parter had Sonic teaming up with his younger self at one point. Seems someone on the Sonic Team caught the episode while trying to think of the premise of ''VideoGame/SonicGenerations''.
** Another Blast To The Past example: The whole concept of the gang using time travel which in later years would surprisingly become somewhat of a staple in the games.
** [[Disney/TheLionKing Jim Cummings voices a hyena]] in one episode.[[note]]This may actually be ActorAllusion; the two were produced at the same time.[[/note]]
** Cluck is a WesternAnimation/RobotChicken.
* HypeBacklash:
** Many fans of the current game series become irritated by the mentioning of the show, due to many fans' tendency to boast its story and characters as superior to the SEGA canon.
** Some feel that the show has been overhyped and viewed through the NostalgiaFilter. ''WebVideo/TheAnnotatedSeries'' has this reaction to the show when they riffed it and found that it had a lot more narrative flaws and issues with character likeability than fans admit to. Likewise many really disagreed with WebVideo/TheNostalgiaCritic review of it as well, especially fans of ''WesternAnimation/AdventuresOfSonicTheHedgehog'', which he practically dismissed based on the art style alone.
* InNameOnly: Sonic, Tails, Robotnik, Buzzbombers, Rings, and the basic, general story concept are the only things this series has in common with the games after ''[[VideoGame/SonicTheHedgehog Sonic 1.]]''
* JerkassWoobie:
** Antoine is a self centered Dirty Coward, but his constant failed attempts at respect and heroism (and [[SmugSuper Sonic's]] [[JerkJock relentless jokes at his expense]]) make you feel some sympathy for him. After all, [[ThisLoserIsYou not everyone can be heroic]].
** Snively for the most part is suggested to be as [[LackOfEmpathy remorseless]] and ruthless as Robotnik, still you have to pity the overwhelming amount of abuse he has supposedly suffered from his uncle (who is embarrassed to even acknowledge their relation) for ''over a decade''. The fact the Freedom Fighters often trigger Robotnik's [[YouHaveFailedMe wrath onto him]] (at one point Sonic seemed to acknowledge and laugh about it) probably gives a valid excuse as to why he isn't sympathetic towards them.
* MagnificentBastard: Robotnik shows signs of this, from his [[ManipulativeBastard manipulation of Sonic's egotism]] in "Sonic Racer" (''"on with the race, and may my best... MACHINE... win."'') to his ability (at least in "Sonic and Sally") to [[XanatosSpeedChess out-xanatos most of the freedom fighters]]...
-->'''Sonic''': ... except Tails.
* MyRealDaddy: In the early-to-mid 2000s, when the Sonic franchise began turning out numerous 3D games that were commercially and critically panned, a significant number of older Sonic fans disliked this. Amongst [=SatAM=] fans, some felt that [=SatAM's=] creators, particularly the late Ben Hurst, had handled the story and the characters of the franchise far better than Sonic Team ever did.
* NightmareFuel: It has its own page. Well justified, too.
* TheScrappy: Out of the main cast, Dulcy and Antoine are the least liked characters. Say what you want about Sally, but she still has a good amount of fans. Many felt that Dulcy was a pointless addition to the cast, especially since she appeared out of nowhere in the second season and the writers [[RememberTheNewGuy want you to pretend that she there since the beginning of the show]]. Also, many found her klutzy behavior to be more annoying than funny. Antoine gets a lot of flak for [[TheLoad not really doing anything useful]]. His cowardly personality tends to annoy viewers more than amuse them, especially since he tend to be a DirtyCoward at times. If he was more of a LovableCoward like Chuckie from ''Rugrats'' he probably would have been more liked. It also doesn't help that he really doesn't have any real redeeming traits (outside of a few JerkWithAHeartOfGold moments). Given that he is the StrawLoser of the group and Sonic doesn't like him, it could be intentional.
* ScrewedByTheNetwork: More like "screwed by the affiliates". This was the end of the SaturdayMorningCartoon era, and many markets were already pre-empting the show in favor of Saturday morning news.
* SeasonalRot: [[ZigzaggedTrope Zigzagged]]. Season 2 is commended for its more developed continuity-based plot, but has multiple story criticisms compared to season 1, often concerning both Sonic and Robotnik's increased incompetence, [[DenserAndWackier overabundance of cheesy comic relief]] and the [[RememberTheNewGuy inexplicable introduction of]] [[TheScrappy Dulcy The Dragon]]. Also season 2 was written near entirely by Ben Hurst, making for a more consistent dynamic, albeit to the point of being streamlined greatly, with Hurst's preferred [[SpotlightStealingSquad characters]] and [[{{Flanderization}} enterpretations]] taking over (eg. Sally and Antoine were prominent in every episode, and were simplified to their [[PositiveDiscrimination positive]] and [[StrawLoser negative]] traits respectively, while fan favorites such as Rotor and Bunnie were DemotedToExtra).
* SecondSeasonDownfall: Though this was more due to [[ScrewedByTheNetwork the simultaneous cancellation of all of ABC's then-current lineup in favor of Disney-sourced programming]] than the actual quality of the writing.
* ShipTease: Bunnie pinching Antoine's cheek in "Sonic Racer." Made HilariousInHindsight by them becoming an OfficialCouple (and marrying) in the Archie comic.
* SoBadItsGood: The German version of the theme song.
* SuspiciouslySimilarSong:
** The orchestral background music [[Franchise/BackToTheFuture certainly sounds familiar]]... This extends even beyond the show's orchestral theme tune, to the point where the entire score is essentially one big riff on Alan Silvestri's style, complete with harmonies and dissonances based on octatonic scale patterns.
** Robotnik's theme sounds a little similar to the ''Film/{{Scarface 1983}}'' theme.
* TakeThatScrappy: Sonic lampshades Antoine's obnoxiousness and uselessness quite often.
** Bunnie inexplicably reverting back to her half-metal body after what turned out to be a temporary de-robotocization.
* TheyWastedAPerfectlyGoodCharacter:
** Bunnie Rabbot made interesting use of the show's robotocization concept and had kickass cyborg powers to boot. However she had a supporting role in the majority of the first season and was DemotedToExtra in the second, arguably getting the least amount of development time out of the rest of the Freedom Fighters (Rotor and Tails were also heavily OutOfFocus for most of the show's later run). The comics adapted from the show utilize her a bit more, but still play her as one of the more minor leads.
** Tails, who according to [[WordOfGod Ben Hurst]] would have got a lot more screen time in Season 3 if it was finished.
* VillainDecay: Robotnik debuted as a cunning EvilOverlord with a deathly serious attitude in stark contrast to his LaughablyEvil persona in most other enterpretations. In the second season, while still somewhat fearsome, Robotnik gains more buffoonish qualities and also falls for BondVillainStupidity on several occasions due to his obsession with destroying Sonic.
* TheWoobie: Most characters had their moments of this. Sonic and Sally sure did, but Bunnie is the biggest contender by a long shot.
