* AlternativeCharacterInterpretation: [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UU6UMeGzjCw This video]] interprets the Slender Man's intentions of stalking Kate as [[StartOfDarkness revenge for her accidentally killing his girlfriend]].
* CameraScrew: Both the protagonists are holding literal cameras, and both times the Slenderman screws with them while he is in proximity.
* FandomEnragingMisconception: Some fans who have discovered the mythos from playing this game assume that the monster is called "Slender." He is not. His name is "The Slender ''Man''." The ''game'' is called "Slender."
* FridgeBrilliance: [[spoiler:It's only natural that the Slender Man would catch you immediately after you get all eight pages. After all, with each one that you acquire, it gets progressively easier for him to find you, as he already knows where all the pages are.]]
* FridgeHorror: What exactly does Slenderman do to you if he catches you? Some of the notes you get imply that he won't just kill you; he will either rape you or eat you, each sounding equally terrifying. It's even worse when you don't know how true those suggestions are. Either the writers are trying to encourage you to not get caught or they've witnessed/experienced it.
* GoodBadBugs: Players have discovered that the Slender Man is essentially locked into place if he's in your field of vision whether you can see him or not. People have exploited this by going into the woods then when Slendy shows up, they position themselves so that Slendy is blocked by a tree. This leaves the Slender Man standing still in the woods like an idiot while the player sits unharmed.
* HypeBacklash: A lot of the community's backlash has less to do with the game itself, and more to do with its fans. A few people have looked into it and discovered the rest of the Franchise/TheSlenderManMythos, but a lot of people who were introduced to the Mythos through the game think that the game created the Slender Man, and some will even go so far as to say that ''WebVideo/MarbleHornets'' stole from ''Slender''.
* NightmareRetardant:
** The secret "Twenty Dollars" mode from one of the older versions can take the edge off if you've been playing for too long. It's entirely the point in fact.
** The model for the Slender Man looks like a blow-up doll or a mannequin. It can take away a lot of the horror if you see him in full view. Thankfully, he gets a considerably more intimidating model in the remake.
** WebVideo/ProJared presents [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QqakBC4p04A How to Make Slender Not Scary]].
** The cheat that activates [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=siYitV6S5_I Shotgun Mode]].
* OnceOriginalNowCommon: This game was hugely popular when it came out, but nowadays, it's hard to see what's so special about it since there are [[SturgeonsLaw literally hundreds of games]] where you run around a forest at night looking for items while being chased by a monster.
* ParanoiaFuel: The game runs on it. Slender Man can show up anywhere, at any time.
* ScrappyMechanic: The sprinting system in the early versions got the most criticism, particularly since the PlayerCharacter walked so slow, could only run a short distance, and his/her maximum stamina would deplete permanently every time she ran. Run too much at the beginning, and the game could end up UnwinnableByDesign. Later versions have since been addressing it.
* SerialNumbersFiledOff: Milkstone Studios S.L. basically took ''Slender'', changed the pages to tape recorders, and released it on the Xbox Indie Games label as ''White Noise: A Tale of Horror''.
* SpiritualAdaptation: Basically ''WebVideo/MarbleHornets'' in video game form.
* ThatOneLevel: The abandoned complex. Tight corridors, low ceiling, maze-like halls, few exits, blind corners, dirty linoleum, and nowhere to run. If he finds you in there, you're ''screwed''.
** For a while it seemed like Slendy couldn't spawn inside the building due to a code change in 0.9.4 that prevents him from appearing inside of objects. Then someone found out - he just appears in the hallways. Directly in front of you.
* TheyWastedAPerfectlyGoodPlot: Some people believe the idea of Slendy being in the game was not necessary; as [[NothingIsScarier 9/10ths of the horror came from the dark, desolate surroundings]].
