* AllAnimationIsDisney: Doesn't matter if "from the makers of ''WesternAnimation/IceAge''" is all around the publicity.
* AwesomeArt: It's a ''beautiful'' movie, there's no denying that.
* BestKnownForTheFanservice: An animated GIF of the beach ball bouncing off a lady's badonkadonk can be found around the net and for a lot of people it's the most memorable part of the movie.
* BigLippedAlligatorMoment: Nigel's VillainSong. It comes right out of nowhere, adds absolutely nothing to the story, and is never brought up again. It at ''least'' gives some {{backstory}} for him and explains why he's evil, but this aspect is never brought up again either, probably to keep the auidience from having any sympathy for the guy when he's clearly meant to be pure evil.
* BrokenBase: Among animation fans. Some see it as [[SoCoolItsAwesome one of the best animated films of 2011]], others find it SoOkayItsAverage, while still others find it a complete and utter ClicheStorm.
* ClicheStorm: The film is a compilation of every trope common to kids movies in the 2000s, especially [[Creator/DreamWorksAnimation Dreamworks]] movies. A LastOfHisKind Blue Bird played by Creator/JesseEisenberg whose acting and voice are a Creator/MichaelCera stand-in. This Blue Bird [[AcrophobicBird doesn't know]] [[HowDoIShotWeb how to fly]] and is [[{{Adorkable}} awkward and nerdy]] and tries to woo a HotBlooded ActionGirl also LastOfHerKind [[RecycledInSpace bird]] played by Creator/AnneHathaway. A [[IWasQuiteALooker vain]], [[SmugSnake egocentric]], and FauxAffablyEvil bird played by an actor who is not but sounds suspiciously like Creator/TimCurry. A HappilyMarried HenpeckedHusband [[TheMentor Mentor]] Toucan played by Creator/GeorgeLopez. An OddCouple romance followed by a DieOrFly learning how to fly JustInTime (with the help of the PowerOfLove) scene are both bound to happen.
* CrowningMomentOfAwesome:
** Linda, driving like a maniac behind the wheel of [[spoiler:a massive parade float]], crashes through a chain link fence onto an airport runway and [[IncrediblyLamePun plays chicken]] with the smuggler's twin-engine plane in a desperate attempt to stop them taking off with Blu. It almost works too.
** And moments later, Blu has several in a row when he [[spoiler: busts out of his cage, frees all the other captive birds, and takes out Nigel -- and by accident, the plane itself -- with a fire extinguisher and a bungee cord, then saves himself and Blue from certain death by flying for the first time in his life.]]
* CrowningMusicOfAwesome:
** DJ Dero's Batucada in the trailer is only the beginning (and is heavily sampled in the soundtrack). The first two minutes of the movie are set to a Brazilian samba.
** Jewel's solo in "Hot Wings I Wanna Party" is one of the most beautiful parts of the entire movie. And a great contrast. Blu's a natural talent at the rapid motions of street-style samba; Jewel's flowing motions evoke a much more formal, classic style of samba.
** John Powell's score is a bit overshadowed by the songs and isn't exactly ''[[WesternAnimation/HowToTrainYourDragon How to Train Your Dragon]]'' but it gets some moments to shine, particularly "Flying" towards the end. Of corse, having famed Latin composer Sergio Mendez supervising helped immensely.
** And now the sequel has Music/BrunoMars featured in it! And he really gets his chance to shine with his introduction song, [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yzoaxnVvtJI "Welcome Back"]], a sweet sounding serenade dedicated to Jewel's return to the Amazon.
** With [[Theatre/{{Wicked}} Kristin]] [[Series/{{Glee}} Chenoweth]] in the film, an awesome song is kind of to be expected. And [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=894idIlso5M she doesn't disappoint]].
* EnsembleDarkhorse: Nigel, whose [[LargeHam over-the-top]] CardCarryingVillain routine and catchy VillainSong make him very entertaining to watch. They bring him back in the sequel possibly because of his darkhorse status.
* FanPreferredCouple: Fanfic writers love shipping [[HoYay Nico and Pedro]].
* GermansLoveDavidHasselhoff: It's not surprising most of its box office came from overseas - even less that Rio's most profitable market outside North America was Brazil.
* HilariousInHindsight: KristinChenoweth is voicing Gabi the Poisonous Tree frog... Who has a bad case of MadLove, can't touch the object of her affection without killing them, and specifically mentions pie in her song describing her current situation. [[Series/PushingDaisies Sounds like Olive finally gets a chance to understand Chuck's situation with Ned "The Pie Maker".]]
** [[Creator/JesseEisenberg Blu]] [[Film/BatmanVSupermanDawnOfJustice uses his smarts to get around his hangup of being unable to fly.]]
* MoralEventHorizon: For Nigel, it's likely near the end when he [[spoiler:causes a cage to fall on Jewel's wing, injuring it.]] His remorseless remark leads Blu to [[spoiler: attatch a fire extinguisher to his leg, and launch him out of the plane]].
-->'''Nigel''': Oh Pity. Now we have ''two'' useless, flightless birds!''
* NightmareFuel: Nigel...just Nigel. His FauxAffablyEvil personality does nothing to hide what a truly nasty piece of work he is...particularly if you've attracted one of his many [[IHaveYouNowMyPretty appetites]].
** It certainly doesn't help that he uses a JumpScare every time he appears on screen.
** VillainDecay: In the sequel he's straight-up LaughablyEvil.
* TheScrappy: Roberto is already getting this from fans, even if; or because, he's voiced by Bruno Mars.
* {{Sequelitis}}: The sequel is not as well received as the first.
* {{Squick}}: Any scene where Luiz the bulldog drools on the main characters. Although he has stated it was a medical condition.
* Main/TheProblemWithLicensedGames: The movie's game is just a poorly done ''[[VideoGame/MarioParty Mario Party]]'' copy.
