* AdaptationDisplacement: Not many people have heard of the [[Manga/RikiOh manga]], but have heard of the movie.
* AssPull: The Warden completely out of nowhere revealing that he is from the same school of martial arts as Ricky in the last fight. And then he [[OneWingedAngel transforms into a monster]] out of nowhere.
* EsotericHappyEnding: The film ends with Ricky freeing all of the prisoners. But nothing indicates that they are all wrongfully imprisoned, and many of the prisoners are probably mass murders and rapists etc that deserve to stay behind bars. Then again, the manga reveals that the world outside of prison is already a crime-filled cesspool.
* GuiltyPleasure: It's one big fun colorful gorefest.
* HarsherInHindsight: The film's narration of privatized prisons is not far off in the modern United States. More so since many of them are under scrutiny for squalid conditions for inmates.
* MemeticMutation:
** The "YOU ARE ALL FREE NOW!" scene[[note]]The original line was "Go home, everybody!" in Cantonese[[/note]], which has become quite popular with the MediaNotes/FightingGameCommunity, thanks to its use by caster Victor "[=Sp00ky=]" Fontanez at the end of his tournament streams. You can watch it [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DMrGBw3Ay20 here]] at the end of the Evolution 2015 stream, where you can hear crowd shout the words out along with Riki. The original scene, meanwhile, is also widely used in Chinese-speaking communities.
** The head smashing scene is also referenced often due to a running gag from the original incarnation of Series/TheDailyShow.
** "You got a lotta guts, Oscar!"
** "[[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zx4KuIV5xrs NANOMACHINES]], [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-SEwqikBfrA SON]]!" [[note]]The Warden after transformation somehow resembles [[VideoGame/MetalGearRisingRevengeance Senator Armstrong]], plug in the music and sound effect, you get Senator Warden.[[/note]]
* MoralEventHorizon: Rogan and Brandon skin Alan alive after he refuses to kill Ricky in revenge for his godfather Oscar. They then leave his body outside on the garden for everyone to see, attracting the wrath of Ricky.
* {{Narm}} / NarmCharm:
** The Assistant Warden's office has shelves filled with what appears to be video tapes of pornography, making any scene that takes place in that office even harder to take seriously.
** One scene of painfully funny {{Wangst}}. In the words of Dr. Boogie from Website/IMockery, "After breaking the handcuffs off of his dead buddy... Ricky produces a toy train from his jumpsuit and lays it on the old man's chest. Then, he throws a big tantrum; screaming, jumping up and down, and flailing his arms."
** The scene where Ricky punches through a bad guy's lower jaw, then punches through his fist, and immediately afterward proceeds to scream "WE'RE HUMAN BEINGS, HUMAN BEEEEEEEEEINGS!"
** While she is about to be groomed by a gang leader, Ricky's girlfriend screams out of nowhere and runs away from him while the drug dealers just [[DullSurprise react nonchalantly.]] She then runs to the roof and jumps to her death where we see a dummy dressed like her, whose head is inexplicably pointing the other way, fall and land stiff.
* NightmareRetardant: The Warden after he transforms is probably the best example in this movie. It's very obvious that it's just a man in a poorly designed ogreish-like suit.
* SoBadItsGood: Oh, so bad it's '''the best.'''
* SpecialEffectsFailure:
** Most of the gory scenes are done with plastic or clay dummies that don't resemble the actors they're doubling for.
** The Assistant Warden's empty eye socket is just his closed eye with magic marker drawn over it.
** During the slow motion shot where Oscar swings a saw to an inmate's face, you can clearly see the part of the saw that was cut off so it can fit the inmate's cheek.
** When Ricky's girlfriend jumps off a building, she is replaced a dummy that is inexplicably facing the building and is perfectly parallel to the ground as it falls.
** Everything about the Warden's transformation and monster form, from what appears to be a rubber mask being stretched to show him growing to the very plastic looking suit the stunt double is wearing.
** In the ending scene where Ricky punches a hole into the prison wall, you can see the wall moving before his fist connects, and when the rubble is falling, you can see the strings used to pull the wall apart.
* {{Squick}}: Despite the rest of the gore being unconvincing, the scene where Ricky is forced to ingest razor blades is genuinely gruesome.
* {{Woolseyism}}: This is the rare example of a film in which the English dub ''improves'' the experience with delightful ''unintentional'' comedy, which fits in with the strange style of the film.
* VindicatedByHistory: The movie was a complete bomb when it was released destroying the careers of a lot of the cast and crew. While most people wouldn't call it a good movie today it's gained a massive cult following on the internet mostly for how violent and ridiculous it is.
