* AudienceAlienatingEra: When the British company [=TheCharacterShop=] took over in 2009, the comics were rendered in 3D. Of course, aside from weirding out longtime fans, the designs have been criticized for being [[UnintentionalUncannyValley unintentionally more humanoid]].
* HilariousInHindsight: 28 years after her introduction in the magazine, a character also named "Scarlett Fox" would appear in the game ''VideoGame/TempleRun''.
* MagazineDecay: ''Ranger Rick'' has had several redesigns due to different artists, and presumably a desire to update with the times. It started out rustic from 1967 to 1982, then became more modern from 1982 until around 2000, then simplified for a look more appropriate of a comic book until 2009, then made the jump to 3D, and back to 2D in 2016. The switch from the beautiful modern look of the 80s and 90s to the comic-book look in the early 2000s is a popular choice for when it all went wrong.
* NightmareFuel: In the August 1994 story, Boomer is disinterested in that year's theme for National Wildlife Week about pollution. He stumbles upon a mysterious VR headset and sees Deep Green Wood as a dark, barren PollutedWasteland. Gas masks have become the norm, [[CreepyHairlessAnimal porcupines have lost their quills]] from nuclear radiation, some creatures [[MultipleHeadCase have grown two heads]] from drinking poisoned water (sold like a rare commodity), and Ranger Rick appears to have been drunk by the poisoned water. An [[YouDirtyRat evil,]] [[RodentsOfUnusualSize bear-sized rat]] has been appointed the new leader, and has siezed control over Deep Green Wood for himself and his fellow pests. Luckily this is all just a simulation.
* TearJerker: This magazine likes throwing these moments in to inspire the kids to take the lessons to heart, but only rarely does it have an animal die in-story to drive home the consequences. One of these was Boomer accidentally triggering a rock slide that squashed a snake they had been talking to moments earlier. Another was when a loon swallowed a fishing line sinker and got poisoned to death, with the loon dying in Rick's lap. That one was memorable because [[https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/NqHarpyCofw9ucuQxpTDNNlgADotFjbVsEtlLIBE_hq04yKFfWnD3FU1paWOAYcHe-RKduXc0myIiuVUqhoCSOcnC7SUEkC16OKEEKUJ4xGR-TlT=w1280 they actually illustrated it]], with a SingleTear rolling down Rick's cheek. Cue a legion of kids following the magazine's advice to stop using lead sinkers.
* TheyChangedItNowItSucks: See Magazine Decay.
