----
* ActorShipping: In addition to Beca and Chloe, Anna and Brittany are also shipped together. It doesn't help that they tend to flirt with each other during interviews.
** Inverted with Jesse and Aubrey who are paired because their actors are dating.
* AlternativeCharacterInterpretation: Aubrey: Uptight bitch mired in tradition who won't accept new ideas or an overzealous TeamMom who just wants the Bellas to do well and just has trouble letting go of tradition?
** She sees losing the finals the previous year as her fault. In order to redeem herself and the Bellas they need to win, right? So she insists that they continue to do the previous year's show and choreography because that's what got them to the finals last time.
** Jesse, DoggedNiceGuy or a dude who fails to grasp the concept of boundaries, insinuating himself into situations that don't require his input and only ends up with Beca in the end because he's the DesignatedHero?
** Beca, cool, sassy rebel or rude, whiny, and self-centered?
*** Possibly the latter, [[CharacterDevelopment swinging towards the former.]]
** In the sequel was Chloe intentionally failing because she was afraid to leave The Bellas or was she afraid to leave Beca.
* BaseBreaker: Much like Rebel Wilson herself, Fat Amy can be a bit divisive. Either she's [[EnsembleDarkhorse a hilarious breakaway character]] who steals the show or [[TheScrappy an obnoxious attention whore]] who makes it unwatchable.
* BigLippedAlligatorMoment: The scenes featuring the commentators, but [[TropesAreTools Tropes Are Not Bad]] as their scenes are arguably one of the more funny in the film.
** Just what, exactly, was the purpose of that fight scene at Regionals, other than to feature some extremely awkward masochism.
*** It is almost salvaged by two words: [[CrowningMomentOfFunny Vertical running!]]
* BlackSheepHit: "Cups" turned out to be an insanely popular song months after the movie was released due to people posting videos themselves copying the scene. It became so popular that a longer version was produced and sent to radio, and despite being barely over 2 minutes long, it's turned into a big hit.
* CreepyAwesome: Some of the things Lily says are downright bizarre, but they make for a good RewatchBonus. Plus, she's one hell of a beat-boxer.
* CrossesTheLineTwice: [[spoiler: Lilly getting knocked over into Aubrey's puke puddle? Gross, sad, but strangely amusing. Lilly suddenly moving her arms and legs in it like she's making a snow angel? Disturbing yet hilarious.]]
** Many, many of John Smith's (John Michael Higgins) comments are so bizarre, so offensive, and so far out there, there is no other response to them but laughter.
* [[SugarWiki/AwesomeMusic Crowning Music of Awesome]]: The Riff-Off, as well as the Trebles and Bellas finals. "Cups" also ended up being this as well, see above.
** The Riff-Off 2.0 from the sequel qualifies as well (the fact that instead of being essentially "the Bellas versus the Trebles" like the first one and has four groups actively taking part in it makes it particularly awesome).
* CultClassic: Did moderately well in its original release, but has really thrived posthumously, as it's now a staple of girls-night-out screenings and Drafthouse sing-alongs.
* DieForOurShip: Generally averted. Fanfics pairing Beca with someone else tend to portray Jesse as her [[PlatonicLifePartners best friend]] more than anything else.
* EarWorm: All of them.
** Special note goes to "Cups" (a cover of "You're Gonna Miss Me when I'm Gone" by Lulu and the Lampshades accompanied by percussion beats from a Solo cup). It's pretty much impossible to go on YouTube without tripping over a new cover these days. [[AscendedMeme Even]] Creator/AnnaKendrick [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7VVERnrVTW8 ended up making fun of it]].
* EnsembleDarkHorse: Fat Amy, far and away.
** Lily's audible lines have pretty much hit MemeticMutation and made her into another Dark Horse.
** Chloe too both for being AmbiguouslyBi (see FanPreferredCouple and LesYay below) and for being the ''nicest'', sunniest character in the film.
* {{Fanon}}: Chloe's year is never mentioned in the movie. She could be anyway from Sophomore to Senior, but in most fanfiction she's a senior like Aubrey.
** It's most likely that she's a senior since the leader in the beginning leaves the group to both her and Aubrey, and Chloe is nowhere to be seen at the end scene that takes place the next school year.
** Most fics peg Aubrey as either a pre-Law student or an Economics/Business-related one.
** The guy that Chloe was in the shower with has been named Tom by the fans, even though his name was never mentioned in the movie.
** A lot of stories have been making Beca and Stacie best friends recently despite their interaction in the film being minimal.
* FanPreferredCouple: Beca/Chloe has been this since the trailer came out. Keep in mind that neither character's names were even mentioned in the trailer (Bechloe Yay!).
** Recently Stacie and Aubrey have developed a fandom.
** And Beca and Aubrey.
** Basically some form of LesYay Bella-cest (because, hey, if the Trebles are off limits).
** Lily and Donald, fuelled by the scene where Donald calls her 'adorable' when he hears her beatboxing.
** Stacie and Donald too due to some brief interactions.
* HilariousInHindsight: All of shots at Series/{{Glee}} since Skylar Astin has joined the cast of the show.
** Remember when Anna Camp was the horrible singing competition ''judge'' on it? (No, nobody else does really, either.)
** John Michael Higgins (the male commentator) also starred in a season one episode of Glee, as a man "addicted" to musical theatre.
** The fact that Kelley Jakle (Jessica) and Adam [=DeVine=] (Bumper) were dating before shooting began.
* HollywoodPudgy: Entirely Averted. Cynthia Rose and a couple of the other minor Bellas are played by actresses who are average sized women that might well get tagged with this trope in other movies. Nothing about their size is ever mentioned here.
** Actually, the first time the new Bellas line up sings in a competition, [[ThoseTwoGuys John and Gail]] make a snide comment about the line up being more "diverse" this year, in comparison to the last year's team who were all about the same size.
** With Fat Amy who is played by a legitimately big woman, it's only ever Fat Amy who talks about her size and even in that she is very firmly of the opinion that her weight/size is positive thing.
*** It is, however, implied that she does this because she really is self-conscious.
** And the guys at the frat party imply they're just as put off by the new girls' physical appearances as with the off-key singing.
* JerkassWoobie: Aubrey. Beca occasionally too
* LGBTFanbase: Quite the large lesbian following, not surprising for its mostly female cast and girl-power message, an actual canon lesbian character (Who's sexuality isn't confirmed by most of the film not because she is closeted, but because she's so comfortable with it that she feels no need to make an issue of it) and [[FanPreferredCouple Chloe's rather un-ambiguous fondness for Beca]] (and some other Bellas as well).
* LesYay: Chloe and Beca in the shower and in general. Chloe seems like she's at least a bit attracted to Beca.
** Beca doesn't seem particularly not-attracted to Chloe herself.
** Some between Cynthia Rose and Stacie.
** Chloe and Stacie, too, particularly during the [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aqnRe-KNjIM training montage]].
** Beca confessing making her [[KissingCousins female cousin touch tongues with her]], and Chloe's approving and slightly impressed reaction in [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XDkBzLqD61o the deleted confessions]]. Yep, [[SarcasmMode neither of those are even a bit bi]], definitely not.
** See also: Chloe and Beca singing the leads on "Just The Way You Are/Just A Dream", both songs about women, while facing each other.
*** Or is it Beca and Aubrey facing each other? Then Aubrey forces her way into singing, too... has someone got a toner for Beca?
** The film follows a group of women. As one of them points out, there will be some.
*** The ComingOutStory is subverted, however, because Cynthia Rose talks about her gambling addiction, when everyone thinks she's going to admit her sexuality. She treats her homosexuality as a complete given.
** In the sequel, Beca admits that she feels "sexually confused" around Kommissar, making it impossible for her to trash talk effectively against Das Sound Machine.
** Beca and Chloe's subtext continues into the sequel. Particular notes are how Chloe is the one person Beca ''really'' doesn't want to tell about her internship, Chloe's lack of knowledge over personal space remains, the two keeping eye contact during the return of "When I'm Gone" and the biggest indication being a scene in a tent where all the Bellas are cramped together, Chloe and Beca are face-to-face as Chloe flat-out admits to Beca in a very teasing and indicating tone that she never got to experiment in college (after asking her if she wanted a backrub).
** Not to mention that Beca's reaction to Kommissar practically canonizes her bisexuality.
** Oh boy, then there's Beca/Emily. Beca appears to flirt with Emily, referencing her "cute butt" and beauty, calls Emily away from love interest Benji, and the two sing a song about trust and guidance in finals, casting glances to one another. Beca's boyfriend seems disturbed: confused by the adjacent Benji's spontaneous production of a flashlight or something else? Anna Kendrick even brought it up herself that she thought it looked like Beca wanted to have sex with Emily.
* {{Moe}}: Chloe and Benji.
* NauseaFuel: Lilly making a...puke angel in Aubrey's vomit.
* ProtectionFromEditors: The creators admit to giving Rebel Wilson complete creative freedom with her character's dialogue. And it shows.
* RomanticPlotTumor / TokenRomance: While not taking up an excessive amount of screen time, Beca and Jesse's romantic subplot adds little to the film and seems somewhat obligatory. Beca's growing to accept that she likes being a Bella could easily have been character growth enough.
** In the sequel, the relationship is farily stable and Jesse gets mostly DemotedToExtra. The Benji/Emily sublot, while contributing little to the plot, also takes considerably less screentime than Jesse/Beca in the original.
* RonTheDeathEater: Much more {{canon}} than simple AlternateCharacterInterpretation is Jesse being a self-righteous prick who, self-righteously, believes he has some right to barge into Beca's personal life, despite the fact she prefers to be closed off to everyone, and that he has some sort of ChosenOne divine duty to drag her out of herself and get all involved when she doesn't really know him and it's none of his business. He only gets her because he's the DesignatedHero.
* TheScrappy: Bumper, because he's an unrepentant Jerkass and a KarmaHoudini. Also Kimmy Jin for being a bitch to Beca for no real reason.
** Some people feel this way about Fat Amy, particularly in the first movie where she does nothing to contribute to the plot.
** EthnicScrappy: Flo from the sequel for her lines being mostly unfunny Latina stereotypes complete with a heavy accent.
* ShipsThatPassInTheNight: Many Beca/Chloe stories will pair Jesse and Aubrey (Although their actors are dating in real life) or Aubrey and Benji or Aubrey and Stacie.
* SignatureScene:
** Aubrey's very first pukage.
** Beca and Chloe's duet in the shower.
** Beca singing ''Cups'' in the auditions.
** The TrainingMontage in tune of "Starships".
** Lilly making a puke angel in Aubrey's vomit.
** The CrowningMusicOfAwesome finale.
* TearJerker: This bit:
--> '''Aubrey:''' I am my father's daughter. (voice breaks) And he always said, "If at first you don't succeed...pack your bags."
* TheWoobie: Benji until the very end, when he finally gets to perform for his audience.
