* AlternativeCharacterInterpretation: The Construct Council is a great example of this. Is the [[AIIsACrapshoot AI A Crapshoot?]] Is it a [[TheSpock Spock]] who opperates entirely on logic and let Isaac [[spoiler: cut off its control of the slake moth trap]] because it knew it needed his help still? Is it [[NotSoStoic more attached to New Crobuzon and information collecting than it lets on]]? Since it factors into the ending of the story only indirectly, the answer is left to the reader's imagination. The Weaver gets this too because of its [[BlueAndOrangeMorality state of mind...]]
* FridgeHorror: Throughout ''Perdido Street Station'', there are snippets of reports of an eye-snatching serial killer dumping eyeless victims all over the city. [[IntrepidReporter Benjamin Flex]] gets snatched by New Crobuzon's militia [[spoiler: tortured for information, and is later found, dead and eyeless, in the river.]] A few chapters later, Mayor Rudgutter mentions that his eyes are failing. [[spoiler: He'll have to get another pair...]]
** The [[spoiler: slake-moths]] apparently do have a place in the ecosystem they came from, where food is sufficient to sustain their population. [[spoiler: Slake-moths]] can ''only'' feed on [[spoiler: creatures with a human-like consciousness]]. So logically, whatever living hell of a habitat they came from, there ''must'' be [[spoiler: lots of sentient beings living there, who think and feel much like we do, who ''have to endure slake-moths' depredations every day of their lives''...]]
* HoYay The two men in the adventuring party hired by Isaac
* JerkassWoobie: Yagharek turns out to be a [[spoiler: [[RapeIsASpecialKindOfEvil rapist]]]]. He is also one of the most decent people in the story, [[TheAtoner The Atoner]] and has had a pretty terrible life after his (admittedly deserved) punishment. [[FromBadToWorse It doesn't get better...]]
* MoralEventHorizon: [[spoiler:Kidnapping an elderly terminal patient and using him as bait to attract the slake-moths]] is an InUniverse MEH for Derkhan and Isaac. Derkhan comes up with several ways to justify the act, but rejects all of them because she knows there is nothing that can truly excuse what they're doing.
* MostWritersAreMale: How many ''female'' readers were puzzled for even a moment about what "choice-theft in the second degree" would turn out to be?
* {{Squick}}: Take your pick.
** Dear God, anytime they mention Remaking. Especially [[spoiler: The woman who has her baby's arms grafted to her face.]] Spoiler Not Safe for Sanity.
* TheyWastedAPerfectlyGoodCharacter: Meet [[spoiler: Lin]], hard-working, talented, bitter, dysfunctional, [[spoiler: trying to come to terms with her abandonment of her society and culture]]. [[WomenInRefrigerators Stuffed into a fridge halfway through the story]].
* TheyWastedAPerfectlyGoodPlot: Honestly, The [[MalignantPlotTumor Maglignant Plot Tumor]] that is [[spoiler: the slake moths]] can be seen to have taken away from the perfectly workable story of a scientist and his artist girlfriend trying to make their way in a poor and hostile fantasy world.
* TheWoobie: [[UpToEleven Nearly everyone]] will end up this way by the end of the story. This is a law of ChinaMieville writing.
