* DracoInLeatherPants: Shao Kahn, VERY often, for [[EstrogenBrigade both]] [[EvenTheGuysWantHim sides]] of the fandom. [[{{Stripperiffic}} Very, very tiny leather pants...]]
* EnsembleDarkhorse: ''Every'' new character!
** Reptile for certain.
** The younger Sub-Zero.
** Kitana.
** Jax.
** The {{secret character}}s: Jade, Smoke and Noob.
** Mileena, who is regarded as the most iconic villainess of the series.
** Baraka. The creators have admitted in one of their videos that Baraka is one of their most popular characters, albeit not having been in a lot of the games. Case in point: his inclusion in [[VideoGame/MortalKombatVsDCUniverse the DC crossover]].
** Kung Lao.
* EvenBetterSequel: Due to being UpToEleven of the original.
* EvilIsSexy: Shao Kahn. Just look at that ''body''!
** Mileena is ''supposed'' to be a deliberate subversion, as her hideous face is meant to be completely at odds with her curvaceous build. Tell that to a bevy of fans who still find Mileena dead sexy. [[ProgressivelyPrettier Her looks marginally improving over the course of the series]] hasn't helped this stance.
* GameBreaker: Kitana's fan lift/pummeling combo, a nigh-indefensible move so widely abused that it was nerfed by a software update that made it difficult to corner an opponent. Some players found a workaround anyway.
* HarsherInHindsight: The special intro in the ''Super Nintendo'' port, which features Shao Kahn and Kintaro, is no longer funny now that Acclaim, the company that distributed the first two games in said console, bankrupted. [[http://youtu.be/yrjq6aNYVFk See it yourself here]].
* ItsHardSoItSucks: A major issue with the game is [[Main/TheComputerIsACheatingBastard it's cheating AI]], causing the game to become absurdly hard. It's difficult to enjoy a game when you get thrown almost every five seconds while your attacks are almost always blocked.
* LauncherOfAThousandShips: Sub-Zero VI. Let's see... we've got [[FoeYayShipping Scor]][[GhostShipping pion]], [[IncestYayShipping Noob]] [[GhostShipping Saibot]], [[HoYayShipping Smo]][[RoboShip ke]], [[HoYayShipping Kenshi]], [[ShipTease Sareena]], [[MentorShip Fr]][[FoeYayShipping ost]], [[ShipsThatPassInTheNight Kitana, Jade, Mileena]]...
** Reptile is working his way up. Like Sub-Zero's case with Sareena, the closest Reptile has to a canon love interest is Khameleon due to [[AdamAndEvePlot her hopes to repopulate their dying race]], but it's not uncommon to see fans pair up Reptile with Mileena or Nitara as well.
* MemeticMutation[=/=]NeverLiveItDown: Smoke's initial appearance in ''2'' was as a gray Scorpion [[PaletteSwap recolor]] with crazy speed. His cyborg version has even more attacks taken from other characters. Combine that with one of his vocal grunts [[{{Mondegreen}} being heard by many]] as "[[WesternAnimation/TheSimpsons Yoink]]", he has become famous as a move thief, matched only by [[VideoGame/MortalKombatDeception Shujinko]].
** It doesn't even have to be techniques. Nowadays, Smoke's "Yoink!" is PlayedForLaughs if he steals ''anything''.
* MostAnnoyingSound: Kahn's commentary got the honor of rivaling [[ScreamingWarrior Liu Kang's]] [[{{Kiai}} voice]].
* NightmareFuelStationAttendant: Mileena.
%%FetishFuelStationAttendant has been cut. Please do not re-add it as part of the above entry.
* PolishedPort: Unbelievably, the GameBoy version turned out really well. Yes, the character roster had to be cut down due to hardware limitations, but the graphics and music are very good, the controls are perfect, and the gameplay is actually ''faster'' than the other versions.
* PortingDisaster: The ''Midway Arcade Treasures 2'' version had the start button exclusively function as the pause button. This made unlocking Smoke impossible.
* SelfFanservice: Mileena is probably the character subjected to this trope the most, likely because of the whole [[ButterFace "smoking hot body, hideous face"]] dichotomy she presents. FanArt tends to either outright give her CuteLittleFangs or somehow display/downplay her teeth in a way that doesn't detract from her beauty. She also tends to be hit with AdaptationalAttractiveness in the live action adaptations. That being said, there are fans who disagree with these kind of depictions, seeing Mileena's [[MoreTeethThanTheOsmondFamily Tarkatan features]] as part of the allure of the character, not to mention that she's arguably [[ProgressivelyPrettier been approaching]] UglyCute territory since ''Deception''.
* TheWoobie:
** Kitana has a history of being repeatedly deceived and/or manipulated by several villains throughout the series. She, during ''Mortal Kombat 2'', falsely believes Shao Kahn to be her father. In ''Deception'', she is under the control of Onaga; and in ''Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe'', she's being manipulated by both the rage sent by Dark Kahn, and then by Quan Chi. [[IronWoobie It hardly seems to affect her though.]] She breaks in her ''Unchained'' ending, though, after Blaze tells her that her premonitions were true and ''Armageddon'' is coming.
** Smoke's misfortunes also seem to pile up with each sequel. To date, he's been [[spoiler:converted to a cyborg against his will, deactivated and hung as a trophy after ''Mortal Kombat 3'', and reprogrammed as an evil minion in ''Deception'']]. Smoke: one way or another, his life ''sucks''.
* UncannyValley: In today's standard's, the graphics are a bit... off... For proof, just check Shao Kahn's [[http://images.wikia.com/mk/images/2/2a/Intro.gif introduction.]]
