* AuthorsSavingThrow: Possibly in [[BrokenBase response]] to the DarkerAndEdgier ending of ''VideoGame/MegaMan7'', ''8'' seemed to be made to be a LighterAndSofter installment to try and reinforce Mega Man's IncorruptiblePurePureness.
** Some have also likened the Wily Capsule from this game to a significantly nerfed version of the notoriously difficult Wily Capsule at the end of ''Mega Man 7''.
* FranchiseKiller: Not necessarily bad ([[VideoGame/MegaManX7 there have definitely been worse-received games in the franchise]]), but the Classic series slowed to a halt after this game, with only [[VideoGame/MegaManAndBass a spin-off game]] coming after. It would be many years before [[VideoGame/MegaMan9 a proper sequel]] would come, and by then Capcom decided to [[RevisitingTheRoots strip down the series and return the it to the gameplay style of]] ''VideoGame/MegaMan2''.
* GameBreaker: The Arrow Shot upgrade will essentially one shot every regular mook in the game. Including Sniper Joes that have ''their shields up''.
* HarsherInHindsight: The stage select is accompanied with a globe of the earth, with Dr. Light's Lab being in [[{{Eagleland}} Denver, CO]]. Note the position in the 2nd select screen of [[{{Qurac}} Wily Tower]]... ''then'' note that this was made ''before'' [[TheWarOnTerror 9/11/01]].
* ItsEasySoItSucks: A major point of criticism by many longtime Classic series fans. Keep in mind, though, it's only easy by ''Mega Man'' [[NintendoHard standards]] -- and there are still a few specific bits that'll make you tear your hair out.
* MemeticMolester: Clown Man likes to use his long hands to grab Mega Man from below... Yikes. And then there's his death quote...
-->'''Clown Man''': "See you in my ''dreams''..."
* {{Narm}}: A lot of the voice acting, but Mega Man and Dr. Light stand out.
** Even Rush somehow manages to get in on this, despite "speaking" in barks and growls.
* PolishedPort: The SegaSaturn version, for adding some new content such as extra bosses and art galleries. Sadly, ''[[CompilationRerelease Mega Man Anniversary Collection]]'' does not use this version, likely due to the [=PS1=] version being easier to port to another console.
* PortingDisaster: The ''Anniversary Collection'' port, particularly the [[NintendoGameCube GameCube]] version, has numerous issues with sound emulation, such as skipping through parts of music tracks, and bosses voices inexplicably speeding up. Not to mention there were bouts of slowdown that were certainly not in the original game. Not only that, but it was also a port of the PlayStation version, which lacked [[BonusBoss Cut Man]] and [[MiniBoss Wood Man]], and did not feature the extra galleries the [[SegaSaturn Saturn]] version added. The {{Xbox}} version of ''Anniversary Collection'' is also quite blurry compared to the original game. Also the [[PlayStation2 PS2]] version has input lag EXTREMELY NOTICEABLE in Frost Man's stage and the beginning of Wily Tower 1.
* TheScrappy: Aqua Man tends to be disliked, particularly due to his personality.
* SoBadItsGood: The voice acting. Gets even funnier when you realize that ''Roll'' sounds manlier than Mega Man himself! Dr. Light seems to have some issues with his [[ElmuhFuddSyndwome accent]].
* ThatOneLevel: Frost Man's stage, and, much worse, ''Dr. Wily Stage 1''. [[MostAnnoyingSound Jump! Jump! Slide! Slide!]]
