!! The film:

* AcceptableTargets: New Jersey. "You're on the Jersey side of this cesspool!"
* BaseBreakingCharacter:
** Stefano. {{Adorkable}} NiceGuy or an EthnicScrappy KidAppealCharacter?
** Captain [=DuBois=]. CrazyAwesome or annoyingly over-the-top?
* BrokenBase: Mostly regarding the sequels.
** Those who think that the series gradually [[EvenBetterSequel gets]] [[SurprisinglyImprovedSequel better]] versus those who think [[{{Sequelitis}} it gets worse]], whether or not they liked the first one.
** Those who felt that the first movie was either average or awful and the saved it versus those who think the first movie is the only good one.
* CargoShip: Skipper marries a bobble head. It was originally played for laughs, but then one thing lead to another...
* ContestedSequel: Some people say that ''Escape 2 Africa'' is an [[EvenBetterSequel Even Better]] or SurprisinglyImprovedSequel, while others dislike it and [[TheyCopiedItSoItSucks accuse it of ripping off]] ''Disney/TheLionKing''.
* CoveredUp: The series' various covers of "I Like to Move It" are all much more popular and well known than the original Reel 2 Real song.
* CrazyAwesome:
** ''Captain [=DuBois=]''.
** The penguins wouldn't be the badass heroes they are if they weren't completely insane. Trailers for the first film prominently featured Alex proclaiming "the penguins are psychotic!" -- he's right, but it's not at all a bad thing.
* CriticalResearchFailure:
** In the first film, the titular island is depicted as being uninhabited by humans. [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Madagascar Yeah, about that...]]
** While the Central Park Zoo does house penguins, it does not house lions, zebras, hippos, giraffes or monkeys. [[ShownTheirWork It did feature large animals at one point]], however, so the filmmakers gave New York the first film a 60's feel.
* CrossesTheLineTwice: Has [[CrossesTheLineTwice/{{Madagascar}} its own page]].
* EarWorm:
** "I like to move it, move it! I like to move it, move it! I like to move it, move it! We like to..."
*** "Move it!"
** "I like 'em big, I like 'em chunky"
** [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FMauGc2oy7w Da da dada dada dada CIRCUS, da da dada dada dada AFRO, circus afro, circus Afro, polka dot, polka dot, polka dot, AFRO!]]
*** And the ads. Never. Stop. '''Playing it.'''
*** And it got worse (or better) - [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1UrpQTI6HTo both the ads and the end of the 3rd movie combined that AND Move It]]. The last track on the OST CD was a [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q5-25V1YpZA much longer version of said song]].
* EnsembleDarkhorse:
** The Penguins and King Julien XIII. The Penguins were only a sub-plot to start and keep things rolling, and King Julien was only intended to have two lines, but they became so popular that not only did they get extended roles, but they also got larger roles in the sequel, and ''then'' they got a hugely popular spin-off even though nobody knows how they got back to the Zoo in that continuity.
** From the third film, some viewers (and critics) found Capitaine [=DuBois=] more interesting, or at least more rounded, than the heroes due to simply being so determined and motivated.
** Vitaly has also become a huge fan favorite, with his popularity often eclipsing that of the Zoosters (Note how many more tropes they have on the character page than the others.)
* EthnicScrappy: Stefano is this to some.
* EvenBetterSequel[=/=]SurprisinglyImprovedSequel: The first movie got mixed reviews, but each sequel improved on its predecessors according to critics, especially the third movie.
** CriticalDissonance: There are many Madagascar fans who prefer the first film to the second one, as well as those who consider the third the worst of the bunch.
* FetishFuel: Gloria is ''very'' popular amongst [[ChubbyChaser Chubby Chasers]], for obvious reasons. The sequel seems to acknowledge this when Moto Moto takes interest in her for her size.
* FunnyAneurysmMoment: When the gang first washes up on the island, Melman deduces that they have arrived in San Diego, and Alex laments having to compete with [[Ride/SeaWorld Shamu]] and his "smug little grin". Modern audiences who have seen ''Film/BlackFish'' would know Shamu is anything but smug.
* GeniusBonus:
** Considering how most people had probably [[SeldomSeenSpecies never heard of fossa before this movie]], the fact that the lemurs misspell it "foosa" is a joke that goes over most people's heads.
** Those "drunk French-Canadians" who ditched animals in their circus, with multiple troupes (even with one in the nude), is Creator/CirqueDuSoleil.
* GrowingTheBeard: The third film seems to be this way so far; in keeping with Dreamworks Animation's consistently good quality from ''WesternAnimation/KungFuPanda''-on, it seems to be one of the rare threequels that are more well-liked than their predecessors.
* HarsherInHindsight:
** ''Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa'' features some poachers luring cub!Alex away from an animal reserve where he promptly gets kidnapped. This is [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Killing_of_Cecil_the_lion exactly]] [[http://www.cnn.com/2015/09/08/us/walter-palmer-dentist-cecil-lion-return/ how]] Cecil the Lion was killed.
** A tamer example: the first movie make "the wild" Marty's ArcWords. After one discovers that this was [[DuelingMovies a pre-emptive ripoff]] of ''WesternAnimation/TheWild'', it not only feels awkward, but kind of sleazy.
* HilariousInHindsight:
** Alex threatens to clone Marty after killing him, and then kill all his clones. In the sequel, while Alex doesn't harm them, Marty encounters a herd of zebras, that are absolutely identical to him, which causes Alex to confuse Marty with other zebras.
** In the second movie, Julien gets the line "I would invade a neighboring country and impose my own ideology on them, even if they didn't want it!" His voice actor, Creator/SachaBaronCohen, later played ''Film/TheDictator''.
** In the original film, Melman was [[WhatCouldHaveBeen originally]] an [[SeldomSeenSpecies okapi]], but was changed to a giraffe for fear of audiences [[SmallTaxonomyPools not knowing what an okapi is.]] Years later, in the Valentine's special ''Madly Madagascar'', an okapi character appears as Marty's girlfriend.
* [[HolyShitQuotient Holy Sugar Honey Ice Tea Quotient]]:
** The things Capitaine [=DuBois=] does. There is nothing this woman would not do to get to Alex.
** Also, Vitaly's ring act. There is no ring too small for this tough tiger, [[spoiler: not even a keyhole.]]
* HoYay:
** Alex, with his flamboyant, Broadway style dance maneuvers, [[{{Keet}} overexcited personality]], and suspiciously close relationship with his best friend, Marty the zebra. In the first film, he gets very upset and concerned when Marty leaves the zoo to find the wild. And when they all become stranded in Madagascar, Alex's hunger grows for meat, so with Marty being the closest thing to stake available he licks his rump in his sleep and in another scenario, bites him on the butt when he reverts to his primal instincts and in the second one, he confuses Marty with the other identical zebras multiple times, causing a strain on their friendship and finally there's their reconciliation near the end, where Alex finally manages to tell Marty from the rest of the zebra herd, [[spoiler:by his bite mark on Marty's rear from the last film.]] It's also been pointed out that his interaction with his father seems like a metaphor for a ComingOutStory.
** There's a scene in ''Madagascar 2'' where Julien is giving Melman romantic advice while climbing all over his head and stroking it repeatedly. Not to mention he assumed, or pretended to assume, Melman was going to tell Gloria he ''hated'' her... He's also rather touchy-feely with Maurice in the first movie.
** Come the third movie [[HaveIMentionedIAmHeterosexualToday Alex is given]] a LoveInterest in the form of Gia, but considering their relationship could just as easily be interpreted as a friendship, and Alex is... rather close to the gruff, butch tiger Vitaly, nothing is really resolved. Alex and Vitaly have a few moments like this, in fact (like the tiger calling Alex a lioness). And one of the more common promotional images for the third movie, of Vitaly thanking Alex for the loan of the mane conditioner for his act, [[http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/Alex_and_Vitaly_Resized_9804.jpg looks very bad out of context]] since it looks like he's holding a bottle of lube...
* LGBTFanbase:
** Of all the male characters in here that are introduced, there's Vitaly. Being a strong looking tiger with [[UnderwearOfPower that speedo]], you could have seen this a mile away...
** Arguably prior to that, Alex the lion. The [[UsefulNotes/FurryFandom fandom]] of this movie didn't make it that unnoticeable.
** King Julian, who is more of a DepravedBisexual but otherwise acts like an absolutely ''[[CampGay flaming]]'' [[CampGay homosexual]].
* LoveItOrHateIt:
** Depending on who you ask, this is either a charming, robust little franchise, or an over-abundance of unfunny, uncharming schlock.
** The character designs. They're either humorously cartoony and make for great slapstick, or an eyesore that make the characters harder to relate to.
* {{Magnificent Bastard}}s: The Penguins.
* MemeticMutation:
** "Da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da-CIRCUS! Da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da-AFRO!" In no small part to the fact almost every commercial used it.
** I like to move it move it! I like to move it move it! I like to move it move it! Ya like to...
*** MOVE IT!
*** And it's rather telling the credits to the third movie (along with the ads) uses a mashup [[EarWorm of both.]]
* MoralEventHorizon: In the third film, Chantel [=DuBois=] crosses this after [[spoiler:firing a poisoned dart at Alex while he's in his cage.]]
* MostWonderfulSound: In spite of its overexposure in trailers, you ''will'' cheer when you hear "Afro Circus" [[spoiler:being used by TheCavalry as they arrive to save the main characters]] in the third film.
* {{Sequelitis}}: The sequels suffer from this according to some fans, though not according to critics in fact, [[EvenBetterSequel each sequel has a progressively higher rating]] on Website/RottenTomatoes.
* SignatureSong:
** "I Like To Move It" for the entire series and the first film.
** "The Traveling Song"/"Alex on the Spot" for the second film.
** "Afro Circus" for the third film.
** Meanwhile, the instrumental piece "Zoosters Breakout" by Hans Zimmer is the instrumental piece that is the SignatureSong for the entire series.
* SomeAnvilsNeedToBeDropped: The second film contains some good lessons about love regarding the LoveTriangle between Gloria, Melman, and Moto Moto. First off, Moto Moto is the first man Gloria meets and is apparently interested in, and she does go along with the fact he really loves how fat she is. However, their date quickly falls apart because Moto Moto literally cannot think of any other reason he's attracted to her besides her weight. Melman, meanwhile, in his speech, never once mentions her physical beauty or traits, and shows that he really does care about ''her'' and not her body. Gloria is touched by this and ultimately gets together with Melman. The lesson is that there has to be far more than physical attraction to really be worthy of someone's love and that you have to love the person inside the body, no matter how good-looking they are. Whoever thought they'd teach this lesson through two hippos and a giraffe?
* TastesLikeDiabetes: Melman's heartfelt profession of his love for Gloria and later his smaller speech as he is taken to the volcano is absolutely ''beautiful''. Maybe ''too'' beautiful for some viewers.
* TrailerJokeDecay: That damned "Afro Circus" song...
* {{Wangst}}: Stefano is good at this.
--> But...I want to do a solo act [[LargeHam WITH MARTY!!]]
* WinBackTheCrowd: Many fans of the first film who disliked the second film saw the third film as this.
* {{Woolseyism}}:
** In the original English during the first film's MeadowRun scene, Marty says: "Sugar Honey Ice Tea!" ([[DontExplainTheJoke it's an acronym]]). In the Spanish dub, he says: "‎Miércoles!" ("Wednesday"), a common Spanish euphemism for "tercoles" (and "mierda" is Spanish for "shit", so the acronym joke is replaced with a [[LastSecondWordSwap Last Second Vowel Swap]]).
** In German they use "Himmel, Arm und Wolkenbruch (heaven, arm and cloudburts)", which everyone will be able to tell you is what adults turn "Himmel, Arsch (ass) und Wolkenbruch" into when kids are around. It's the same principal as "Scheibenkleister" and "Scheiße". You know "Schhhh...eibenkleister." "Sshhhh...eeesh."

!! [[{{VideoGame/Madagascar}} The games]]:
* GoodBadBugs: Right after the crashlanding and before you enter the Serengeti proper in ''Escape 2 Africa'' game, Alex gets to fight the scorpions on the way. For some reason, one ends up immortal and cannot be defeated by any means.
* SidetrackedByTheGoldenSaucer: Some people mainly play the first game for the golf and shuffleboarding [[MiniGame minigames]].
