* AwesomeEgo: Luthor is at his most entertaining when he's bragging about how great he is.
* CantUnhearIt: Chances are that Creator/ClancyBrown's voice is the one you'll hear in your head when reading his lines.
* CompleteMonster: Not usually, but in ''ComicBook/TheDarkKnightStrikesAgain'', he is Superman's ArchEnemy and the [[ShadowDictator current de facto ruler of the United States]]. Seizing control of the country after installing a hologram to [[PuppetKing assume the role of the president]], Luthor proceeded to turn the entire country into a police state. Recruiting the help of Brainiac, Luthor kept the superheroes of Earth in line by [[AndYourLittleDogToo threatening to kill their loved ones]]. The heroes that Luthor did not find useful were either imprisoned or subjected to horrific genetic experiments. After a series of raids by led by Batman reinvigorates the public's interest in superheroes, Luthor snaps and begins cracking down on any super-heroic activities. Luthor launches a missile strike against Costa Rica that kills [[spoiler:Hawkman and Hawkgirl]], while he orders his forces to open fire on a concert held by "The Superchix". Luthor has Brainiac kill thousands of people in Metropolis in an attempt to discredit superheroes, not caring at all about the innocent lives lost. Luthor later captures Batman and begins [[ColdBloodedTorture torturing]] him while [[EvilGloating gloating]] how the rebellion has given him the perfect opportunity to use his [[KillSat satellite defense network]] to kill most of the world's population and allow him to rule what's left. [[NotSoWellIntentionedExtremist Lacking any pretenses of helping his fellow man]], Lex Luthor is motivated [[ItsAllAboutMe entirely by his lust for power]].
* DracoInLeatherPants: [[Series/{{Smallville}} Thank you,]] Creator/MichaelRosenbaum.
* FashionVictimVillain: ... A purple and green jumpsuit. [[PunctuatedForEmphasis Purple. And. Green.]] What was he ''thinking'' in the 1970's? Well, it ''was'' the Seventies. In Lex's defense, purple and green is a [[SecondaryColorNemesis very popular color scheme for villains]].
* FoeYay:
** His relationship with Superman is complicated. There was that time in the beginning of ''WesternAnimation/SupermanDoomsday'' he mentioned how much he admired him. Franchise/WonderWoman [[ComicBook/BlackestNight once made him admit]] that he wanted to ''be'' him. They also once had [[ComicBook/{{Superboy}} a son]].
** To say nothing of his sexual relationship with Comicbook/{{Supergirl}} Matrix in the 90's.
* HilariousInHindsight: In the original ''[[Film/SupermanTheMovie Superman]]'' films, Luthor was played by Creator/GeneHackman, who would later play the crooked U.S. President in ''Film/AbsolutePower'' and guess what Lex Luthor [[PresidentEvil would later be running for]].
* MagnificentBastard: The premier MB at DC, always coming out on top of the competition.
* MemeticMutation:
** ''[[Literature/TheSuperdictionary Once]]'', when no one was looking, he stole '''forty''' cakes. [[note]]That's as many as four tens. AndThatsTerrible.[[/note]]
** The above quickly spawned [[http://knowyourmeme.com/memes/forty-keks Forty Keks]], used for (often edited) images of Lex laughing uproariously.
** "[[VideoGame/{{Superman 64}} If you want to save your friends, solve my maze]]!"
*** ''[[GameOver Lex Wins]].'' '''*EvilLaugh*'''
** '''[[Film/SupermanReturns WROOOOOOOONG!]]'''
** He also won't wash his hands. 'Cuz he's eeeeevil.
** Generally speaking, being white, bald, and evil will inevitably draw comparisons to Lex.
* MoralEventHorizon:
** While Luthor is AffablyEvil and most of his actions do not go beyond his obsession with Superman (standard villainy), he is a big candidate of this. Some of his most depraved acts are listed:
** His collusion with Comicbook/{{Brainiac}} and ''[[Comicbook/{{Justice}} negotiating the planet Earth for him]]'' is the most infamous MoralEventHorizon.
** The murderof his own father can qualify, depending on how [[AbusiveDad bad]] Lionel is portrayed as being.
** Under Creator/JohnByrne, Luthor engages in quite a lot of ForTheEvulz manipulations of women, most infamously his "game" of finding married working-class women, offering them millions in exchange for one month in Metropolis as his consort, and then deliberately leaving ''before'' they can decide so that they'll be tormented for the rest of their lives. And as the head of Lexcorp, he's shown intimidating attractive women in his employ to sleep with him.
** During Comicbook/TheDeathOfSuperman storyline, he murders one of his martial arts trainers for knocking him down during a sparring session, reveling in the idea that Superman's absence means he can get away with anything he wants. Oh, and just for added kicks, he makes sure an ex-con janitor at Lexcorp will be framed for it.
* RootingForTheEmpire: Can happen due to the nature of the conflict between an unpowered human and a demigod.
* TheyChangedItNowItSucks: Not everyone is happy about Luthor's transformation from a high-tech inventor criminal mastermind to a CorruptCorporateExecutive. Creator/NeilGaiman (who wrote this version of Luthor in his ''Black Orchid'' miniseries) laments that Luthor has become a "skinny [[ComicBook/TheKingpin Kingpin]]"[[note]]"I liked him better as a bald scientist. He was in prison, but they couldn't put his mind in prison."[[/note]]. Fans of the Franchise/{{DCAU}} version noted that Luthor became more dangerous, intimidating [[EvilIsCool and cool]], when he shifted from TheEighties Luthor businessman getup to his Silver Age MadScientist shtick.
