* HarsherInHindsight:
** Many of his songs with Music/{{Nirvana}} have become uncomfortable since his death, particularly "Come As You Are", which has the line "And I swear that I don't have a gun / No, I don't have a gun..." Not to mention the fact that ''In Utero'' was originally planned to be titled ''I Hate Myself And I Want To Die''.
** There are several publicity shots of Cobain holding a gun in his mouth.
* HypeBacklash: He's so often described as one of the most important musicians of the last twenty years that this reaction often comes about.
* ItsPopularNowItSucks: Interesting example - Kurt loved ''Music/{{Nevermind|Album}}'', until its more mainstream feel won him [[LowestCommonDenominator fans whom he felt didn't understand his message,]] along with a serious disconnect between the tracks that he loved (namely "Drain You", which was one of his favorites) and the tracks that blew up ("Smells Like Teen Spirit" and "Lithium", the former of which he decried as a Music/{{Pixies}} ripoff).
* NauseaFuel: Cobain had a fascination with human anatomy. Many of his lyrics and album artwork feature disturbing BodyHorror imagery of this kind.
* PopCulturalOsmosis: The first thing most people think about when they hear the name ''Kurt Cobain'' is not his music per sé, but the fact that his name is so linked to suicide.
