* AwesomeMusic: The series is well known for its music, particularly the first game's soundtrack.
** [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jYrLvg1JaNg The opening / main theme of the game]]
** Riptor's theme.
** Tusk's Conan like theme song.
** Orchid's theme in the second game, "[[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1YNJPd0uHDA Play Hard]]," complete with vocals.
** Also Cinder's theme, "Trailblazer", which could double as the boss music for Eyedol depending on what version he was fought on (The Arcade version had this one, the SNES version had "The Extreme").
** Fulgore's themes in the first two games.
** [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eH_MA3qlUVM Sabrewulf's]] [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7BZScZeIb-Q themes]]
** Gargos' theme. It's so goddamn ''metal''.
** Killer Instinct (2013)'s soundtrack, courtesy of Mick Gordon.
*** [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CVBpAikvnHk Jago's theme]], now with 100% more chanting.
*** [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rOVMIo_Vq40 Thunder's theme is just superb]], combining traditional and modern instruments in a way that brings out the best of both. The acoustic guitar part that kicks in during intense moments brings a sense of excitement that's different from the other themes. It's a serious standout among a stellar soundtrack.
*** [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5V7gn24QA3U Glacius' theme]], which also manages to cameo ''both'' of his prior themes!
*** [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xDR8B_d7Wh4 Sadira's theme]], the creepiest theme on the soundtrack between the screaming and buzzing.
*** [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UpoOsaTwH44 Sabrewulf's theme]], now including his first theme as a cameo.
*** And to round out our character themes, [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=91c525uAFnc Orchid's theme. It gives a great callback to her original themes, being poppy and electronic; speaking of her original theme, K.I Feeling has a big sampling part at about the two minute mark.]]
*** [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ICKrtbT3PqE The first of the DLC, Spinal's theme]] manages to bring his original theme and then amp up the creepy factor to high, and there's [[OminousLatinChanting Ominous Swedish Chanting]] thrown in as well because pirates.
*** [[http://youtu.be/6Gpk3Qli-Cg Season 1 wraps up with the arrival of Fulgore's theme]], a hard-driving metal theme with an old-school sci-fi feel thrown into it. Also present is both themes, though his first one is used for the idle music.
* BrokenBase: While many fans were elated to see Killer Instinct get a '''long''' overdue reboot, the fact that it's an XboxONE-exclusive title[[note]]which is justified, as Rare belongs to Microsoft now; but the fact that the Xbox One itself is a BaseBreaker so far seems to have leaked over to the game too[[/note]] has many more split on whether it's worth the trade-off.
** The game is adopting a free-to-play model and will release with ''only'' Jago as the selectable character at launch. This is itself a bag of controversy among players, especially considering each character will be $5.
*** This break has largely gone away with release; as it turns out, the pricing model doesn't try to pull any tricks to scam more money from the consumer after all and the free character rotates. About the only negative thing one can say is that the emulated, offline version of the first game isn't much of a bonus for the deluxe edition's extra price. It's largely been forgotten amid the microtransaction insanity of [[VideoGame/ForzaMotorsport Forza 5]] and [[VideoGame/RyseSonOfRome Ryse]].
** The fact that Double Helix is making it, and they haven't had a very good track record...
*** Though Double Helix's work on Season 1 [[WinBackTheCrowd won back the crowd]] with its high quality of gameplay and graphics.
** Some people are disappointed by the fact that No Mercies and Ultimate Combos are not available at launch, since they consider them an important part of the game. Double Helix has stated that they will be added in the future, but that does not stop the disappointment. Most {{egregious}}ly, Shadow Jago as final boss had an Ultimate finisher while no one else had any as of the end of Season 1.
** Another faction in the fanbase is the NostalgiaFilter camp that love KI, but declare the 2013 game as [[RuinedForever a blight upon the earth]], so people should not touch it and just play the classic games again.
* EarWorm: Most of the soundtrack such as Fulgore, Orchid and Cinder's themes.
** T.J.Combo's theme songs:
--> ''Feel the power baby!!!''
--> ''C to the O to the M-B-O''
** The Humiliation theme. A short, looping disco-esque theme that WILL get trapped in your skull.
* EnsembleDarkhorse: Fulgore, thanks to being essentially a robotic [[Franchise/{{Predator}} Predator]].
** [[EverythingsBetterWithDinosaurs Riptor]] and [[KillItWithFire Cinder]] from the first game for their unique designs and gameplay, with many demanding they return in the new game.
** Jago has some popularity for being quite accessible to use.
** Orchid for being a female fighter and her... [[SexyCoatFlashing unusual]] [[DeathBySex finisher]]. Many fans see her as the closest thing she has for a protagonist.
* FirstInstallmentWins: In the eyes of many, [=KI1=] is vastly superior to [=KI2=] just by visual/audio presentation, including combo flashiness, with latter's gameplay improvements being disregarded since both games are not considered to be tournament worthy.
* GameBreaker:
** Cinder could do an ''infinite hit'' combo, and it was easier for some.
** Eyedol's ''infinite hit'' combo.
* GoodBadBugs:
** KI 2013 has a rare and amusing bug, where when a character is knocked out of their first lifebar, they will stay down and never get up. Since the timer doesn't run, there's no way to continue the fight, forcing either player to quit in an online battle, or to exit to the main menu in an offline versus battle.
* ItWasHisSled: [[spoiler:The truth about Jago and Orchid being sibllings is now common knowledge.]]
* MemeticMutation:
** [[MostWonderfulSound C-C-C-]]{{COMBO BREAKER}}!!
** Also, "ULTRAAAAAAAAA COMBOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!"
** "'''ULTRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!'''" Courtesy of the XboxOne game.
** [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FOe0ceZYn8o "Look for the, Bear Accessories, those simple Bear Accessories."]]
** Fulgore's Devastation Beam, which makes a really satisfying Godzilla-like mechanical roar. Unless you're targeted by it, in which case it's [[HellIsThatNoise nightmarish.]]
* Mondegreen: No one knows for sure what Chief Thunder says in KI 2013 after he wins. One popular interpretation goes "Cats go Yum Yum" (or Meow Meow).
** BEANS!! for his Phoenix attack in the first.
** EXCUSE ME! for Jago's Endouken attack.
* MostWonderfulSound: The announcer has a few. There's the classic "C-C-C-COMBO BREAKER!". The 2013 game adds "C-C-C-OUNTER BREAKER!" and "ULLLLLLLLLLTRAAAAAAAAAA!". The sheer enthusiasm the announcer has yelling them makes you feel awesome for pulling it off.
* NightmareRetardant: Fulgore is a big, hulking evil robot with glowy red eyes, long claws, and a multitude of deadly weapons at his disposal. He also makes elephant noises when you hit him.
** Some find Eyedol's name too silly to take him seriously.
* OlderThanTheyThink: Many older players never learned that [=KI2=]'s combo engine allowed 80+ hits without glitching and absent the 2013 game's ability to chain two ultra combos together.
* PolishedPort: Thanks to Nintendo being in a partnership with Rare at the time, they had the programming team for the arcade version handle the Super Nintendo and Game Boy ports, instead of outsourcing it to a third-party developer. The result is that the SNES version was well-received and the GB version was surprisingly faithful, and more importantly, playable.
* RatedMForMoney - Fairly blatant at that. It was actually rated T, but the intent was still there.
** Played Straight with the Xbox One release of Killer Instinct Classic, which has a M rating.
* ReplacementScrappy: Maya, Tusk and Kim Wu, ''Killer Instinct 2'''s newcomers aren't too popular with the fans, being replacements of fan favorites Cinder, Thunder and Riptor. It also doesn't help Thunder is given no explanation for his disappearance and the other two are simply written as being dead, making for a rather cheap way to get rid of them. Time will tell if these three will be RescuedFromTheScrappyHeap in the new game.
** Gargos gets some heat as well from fans for being more of a stock character than Eyedol in addition to sharing his role and similar moves.
* SuspiciouslySimilarSong: Tusk's theme music sounds an awful lot like the Conan theme.
* ThatOneBoss: Shadow Jago, by a long shot. Not only does he knock up the difficulty to the legendarily hard ''[[HarderThanHard Kyle]]'' Difficulty, but he also has a lot of improved frame data, a few new moves Jago normally has no access to, and a much more infuriating Instinct Mode. To the uninitiated, Kyle Difficulty fights involve [[PerfectPlayAI input reading]] CPU opponents that can break any combo they want, resist any traps for Counter Breakers, and will always finish their combo.
** SNKBoss: May not have been since much of his difficulty stems from being played smartly by the CPU but his moves have unique properties to them that make him stand above the rest of the cast.
** Gargos and Eyedol weren't fair fights either, considering [[TheComputerIsACheatingBastard they're capable of regenerating health while the player is down]].
* TheyCopiedItSoItSucks: One of the criticisms towards the game was that it was a ''[[VideoGame/MortalKombatI Mortal Kombat]]'' clone.
** Some also claimed that the 2013 game looked like a grittier ''VideoGame/StreetFighterIV''.
* UncannyValley: While the original game seems to hold up well enough, the character models for Killer Instinct 2 are very...off, especially by today's standards. Everybody (especially the women) looks like big-eyed mannequins with FrozenFace syndrome.
