* AlternativeCharacterInterpretation: The show itself has its flaws but to which extent this is [[SpringtimeForHitler intentional]] is debatable.
** There have been different interpretations for many characters with the majority of interpretations being for Johnny
** Johnny: Concerning Johnny's personality and interactions
* AmericansHateTingle: This show has quite the vocal {{Hatedom}} in the United States, especially since Canadian cartoons in general tend to do poorly in the USA anyway. The fact that it is {{Adored by the Network}} (despite getting terrible ratings) has been major fuel for it.
* {{Anvilicious}}: Morals are dropped... [[{{Understatement}} hard]]:
** The worst offender is Johnny Applesauce, with its "petitioning is better than violence" [[AssPull Ass Pulled]] {{Aesop}} despite the show itself being action-packed.
** Similarly, "Green Johnny" comes off less like an episode, and more like an 11-minute [[PublicServiceAnnouncement [=PSA=]]] about [[GreenAesop recycling and going green]].
** Also, "Good Ol' Johnny Test" starts off as a parody of ''WesternAnimation/ACharlieBrownChristmas'', but becomes quite {{Anvilicious}} once the play turns into a big GreenAesop about waste management.
** Lampshaded, averted and subverted in later seasons [[note]](with the exception of ''X-Ray Johnny'', where the "Books are knowledge, and knowledge is power" message is hammered in once a minute with no irony in sight; even ''Johnny Applesauce'' pales in comparison.)[[/note]].
* {{Asspull}}: "Johnny's 100th Episode" gets a particular standout as Mr. Mittens and Dark Vegan's reasons for wanting Johnny to come out of his coma come completely out of nowhere.
* BaseBreakingCharacter: Believe it or not, '''Johnny''' is this! some people actually defend this guy and see him as a ButtMonkey and/or even [[JerkassWoobie somewhat of a woobie]] due to his horrid father and the more rabid haters in real life while others still can't get past their hate towards this guy since he can be very whiny or despicable at times and yet we're supposed to constantly root for him even at his worst.
* BileFascination: Some people watch it because of how shoddy it is.
* BrokenBase: The show does have its fans considering it has seven seasons due to having some good dialogue, parental bonuses, and admittedly some clever plot lines; but, due to overexposure from its respective networks, stagnant character development, way too much focus on Johnny (who many think to be unlikable), and low-quality flash animation in the later seasons, many have likewise taken a hating for it. Not to mention that anti-fans believe that Canadian laws that require Canadian-only programming in their television stations is the only reason why it lasted so long.
* ClicheStorm: This show is criticized for rehashing a lot of stock cartoon plots, including ''its own''.
* CriticalBacklash: While the show still maintains a very large hate fanbase, it's slowly starting to fall under this trope as well. While it isn't a ''bad'' show, people who watched it after hearing about the immense amount of hate it gets tend to have this reaction. Some episodes are enjoyable, it just had the unfortunate timing of being a flawed-but-decent cartoon that became AdoredByTheNetwork while Creator/CartoonNetwork was starting to undo its years of NetworkDecay.
* CriticalResearchFailure: Mostly for the sake of RuleOfCool and RuleOfFunny.
* CriticProof: The show's detractors will tell you it's as one of the worst cartoons ever made (a very subjective claim at best as this was based more on the constant airings of the show); the show has run for '''seven seasons'''.
* [[SugarWiki/AwesomeMusic Crowning Music Of Awesome]]: Dukey's Johnny Applesauce Song.
* DeaderThanDisco: Believe it or not, the show was actually fairly popular during its first few years having a higher budget and completely different production team, not to mention Creator/KidsWB having a hand in its production (alongside the Canadian network Creator/{{Teletoon}}), probably helped. When Teletoon and Creator/CookieJarEntertainment took on the sole responsibility of production after Kids WB died out in 2008 (Creator/WarnerBros still owns the character trademarks), the show's quality began to drop severely and it's now one of the most hated cartoons ''of all time''. Even the early seasons are viewed as being not much better in hindsight. Not helping was the fact that it continued production well into 2014, mainly because of [[https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canadian_content CanCon policies]] forcing Canadian animation to be constantly churned out in spite of the show's abysmal ratings. The series ended with little fanfare after TV producer David Straiton filed a lawsuit against series creator Scott Fellows for not crediting him as a co-creator for ''Johnny Test''. It's very telling that its season boxsets are sold solely in ''grocery store bargain bins'', and even Creator/CartoonNetwork (who got the American broadcast rights from Creator/TheCW after the demise of Kids WB) seems to despise it as almost all of their promotions for it reek of OurProductSucks. It's even believed that the whole show was a SpringtimeForHitler ploy GoneHorriblyWrong. Today, other than a few projects from Creator/JamesArnoldTaylor (who voiced the title character), and a few {{Take That}}s here and there, it's almost never discussed.
* DesignatedHero: One of the main flaws of the show, especially for the fans themselves, is that it's nearly impossible to root for Johnny sometimes.
* EnsembleDarkhorse: Sissy is popular with the fans (especially shippers).
* EscapistCharacter: Johnny's clearly meant to be this for the show's target audience; it... doesn't really work.
* EvilIsSexy: Or Cute at very least. Susan and Mary as vampires as well as their faux supervillain personas.
* FanonDiscontinuity: Most of the fandom considers it a "Season 1 only" show.
* FoeYay: Bumper does this with Johnny a lot, whether Johnny is [[UnsettlingGenderReveal crossdressing]] or not; another example was in an episode where Johnny tries to change his personality in one of his sister's machines and, when he's stuck a smooth-talking British personality, Bumper implies to like this version of him a lot.
* HilariousInHindsight: Using the "Superhero Effect" to win Susan's heart is a plot reminiscent of the "Mary Jane loves Spiderman" storyline. [[ComicBook/OneMoreDay A storyline kicked out of the canon.]] Same goes for a comparison to "Lois Lane loves Superman", given the CosmicRetcon in ''ComicBook/{{Flashpoint}}''.
** Johnny and the Mega Roboticles. If being the first cartoons to spoof "Toy/{{Bionicle}}" wasn't enough, it became a lot funnier when an [[ShoddyKnockoffProduct actual Bionicle bootleg called "Roboticle"]] [[http://www.otca.com.au/boards/showthread.php?t=2726&page=5 was spotted on store shelves.]]
* HoYay: A lot of it is present in the show. Dukey and Johnny were in a flashback seen embracing each other and having their arms lovingly placed on each others backs while they watch the sun set. In another episode, Dukey once tries to help Johnny snap out of his brainwashing from the super smarty pants by giving him a speech that is clearly ho yay and then telling him " I love you" and Johnny says " I love you too" to Dukey after breaking free from the smarty pants control. There was even a season 6 episode where Johnny and Dukey make a large sandwich and eat it together and they almost accidentally kiss when they finish eating as they were doing it lady and the tramp style. They managed to shut their mouths and bump noses however.
** Gil is noticeably always excited to see Johnny; yet when he sees Johnny's sisters, he can't even remember their names. To make matters worse, in an episode it is revealed that in his personal POV of the world, girls don't exist. He once asked Johnny in "Nightmare on Johnny's Street" to have a candle lit dinner with him after he gets rescued by Johnny with Johnny saying okay to this dinner and high fives gil in agreement. Also in that same episode, Gil gets kidnapped by a Cyclops monster who is clearly male due to its chest and that monster shows a heart in its eye as an expression of love towards Gil but this was a direct result of Susan and Mary's dream on Gil clashing with Johnny's monster dreams.
** Mr. Black and Mr. White, whose HoYay is kind of blatant. In "Guess Who's Coming to Johnny's for Dinner", Mr. Black acts like a divorced wife after he and Mr. White split up due to Mr. Black's bad dancing at a talent competition. They even want to have a vacation to Fiji together.
** In the episode "Johnny [=McCool=]", at the end of the episode the twins are seen sighing at Gil eating a sandwich, then pans out to Gil sighing at Steve [=McCool=], and it turns out it is a picnic. [[spoiler:However the [=McCool=] presented is Dark Vegan in disguise.]]
* IdiotPlot: There are a few episodes subjected to it here and there.
* IronWoobie: Dukey is pretty much this, still having his cheerful, lovable sense of humor despite being a ButtMonkey.
* ItsTheSameNowItSucks: Some fans are annoyed at the lack of character development in later seasons.
* JerkassWoobie: Susan may be a bitch but she has a lot to put up with.
** From the Smarty Pant's point of view, Johnny is a BastardBoyfriend, who only uses them to impress another girl.
* LoveItOrHateIt: To put it mildly, the show has a rabid fanbase and lots of haters, with virtually nothing in-between; the show being AdoredByTheNetwork doesn't help.
* MemeticMutation: '''WHIPCRACK''' and ''guitar riff'' because of how the show abuses these two sound effects every chance it gets.
** Johnny Testing my FUCKING PATIENCE!
* {{Misblamed}}:
** A meta-example. Haters sometimes use this show to prove that [[HitlerAteSugar all Canadian animation is horrible and should stop being produced]]. What many people forget is that Scott Fellows and Creator/JamesArnoldTaylor (Johnny's voice actor) are Americans.
** Another one. Everyone points their hatred for the show just because it's similar to ''Dexter's Laboratory''. While that was a point of contention when it originally premiered, a good number of viewers were willing to look past it as it was different enough not to be a carbon copy (people seem to forget ''a lot'' of shows will have similarities) and even welcomed it ''due'' to said similarities since Dexter had long since stopped airing. No, the ''true'' reason why it was hated was because Cartoon Network and Teletoon went overboard on broadcasting it, especially when it was used as a replacement for ''DC Nation'' in the U.S (which also suffered from CN's wonky programing schedule and ironically would premiere the next overplayed series ''WesternAnimation/TeenTitansGo''). By this point, viewers had gotten sick of the constant airings and detractors started listing any faults of the show to make it look like it was one of the worst cartoons ever.
* MoralEventHorizon: Johnny and Dukey's "prank" on Marie Curie (especially if you're aware of how the RealLife Marie Curie died).
* MostAnnoyingSound:
** The whip sound effect that happens whenever someone lifts their arm; also, [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8WXbJ_uB338 most of the other sound effects]], due to how out-of-place they are.
** The amount of screaming in the show tends to grate as well; the number of screams is high enough to qualify as [[TVTropesDrinkingGame drinking game]] material, although [[ShmuckBait a dangerous one]].
** Johnny's shrill and high-pitched voice. A shame, since [[Creator/JamesArnoldTaylor his voice actor is actually]] [[ManOfAThousandVoices very talented.]]
* {{Narm}}: Rampant [[SeasonalRot after the first season]]; [[SoBadItsGood sometimes goes with the]] NarmCharm.
* OneEpisodeWonder: Vampire Susan and Mary, especially among the anti-''Literature/{{Twilight}}'' fans.
* OneSceneWonder:
** She-Johnny appeared for about a second in the very first episode, but that was enough to grant an awful lot of fanart; in fact, look it up on Website/DeviantArt or a related site.
* OnlyTheCreatorDoesItRight: The first season had a completely different production team from the rest of the series, and while considered [[SoOkayItsAverage average]], it's still held in higher regard than the rest of the series.
* PeripheryDemographic: Due to Dukey and, well, [[UsefulNotes/FurryFandom furries]].
* TheScrappy:
** Johnny's dad for being such an authoritarian to his family; even the writers [[ChewToy don't seem to like him a lot.]]
** Bling Bling Boy to some as his pining for Susan is a lot more creepy than funny.
** Pretty much everybody who's not popular with the viewers like the twins, Dukey or Sissy is seen as a Scrappy to some extent.
** ''Mr. Black and Mr. White'' especially are borderland scrappies due to the fact the show tries ''way'' to hard to enforce HoYay with them (In comparison to the HeterosexualLifePartners trope in the beginning) and the fact they suffer TooDumbToLive. ''A lot''.
* SeasonalRot: Season 1 was average at best, despite the potential it showed, but things went downhill in Seasons 2 and 3 (although enjoyable due to their SoBadItsGood value). Season 4 saw a slight improvement, but by then, the damage was already done and ''Johnny Test'' lost more fans and ratings with every season.
* SnarkBait: Due to the already mentioned SoBadItsGood aspect.
* ShipTease: Johnny and Sissy
** Dukey and Missy
* SoBadItsGood: Admittedly, more than a few fans will admit this.
* SoOkayItsAverage: Likewise a conclusion to some. Not a bad show, but nothing really special about it either.
* {{Squick}}:
** Johnny and Sissy look like siblings. Aside from that most likely unintentional instance, there's the writers' apparent fondness for ScrewYourself and everything related to it.
** The scene after the beginning minutes of "Johnnyitis" in which Johnny, desperate to become sick in order to have an excuse to miss a big history test, eats a sick woman's ''used tissue''. Said woman also had ''snot draining from her nose.''
* SuspiciouslySimilarSong: [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bmg-fnE7Das The show's second theme song]] to Music/GreenDay's [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ee_uujKuJMI "American]] [[Music/AmericanIdiot Idiot"]].
* TheyChangedItNowItSucks:
** As of Season 5, Dukey [[TheOtherDarrin now has]] the same voice actor as Johnny's dad, which proved an unpopular decision at best; the same goes for the change of Mary's voice actress.
** Season 2 is this, but that's mostly due to some fans being put off by the shift in animation after Season 1; compared to ''WesternAnimation/{{Cyberchase}}'' and ''WesternAnimation/{{Caillou}}'' which had done similar but only after 4 seasons, this show at least had the common sense to switch early.
*** Though sadly by Season 5, the animation got even worse than before.
* TheyCopiedItSoItSucks: The show shares more than a few similarities to ''WesternAnimation/DextersLaboratory'', and over time, people started to notice:
** Susan and Mary Test are obviously the Dexters of the show, being redheaded genius children with a laboratory in their house.
** Johnny is like Dee Dee, since both of them are DumbBlonde annoyances who constantly cause trouble for their genius siblings.
** Their parents are kind of like if one took Dexter's mom and dad and swapped their personalities, and then flanderized them: Johnny's Dad is a major neat-freak, while Dexter's Mom had her moments of this as well; Johnny's Mom is the head of the house and always working, while Dexter's Dad was just the head of the household.
** Also, a female in the main cast is bothered by an AbhorrentAdmirer, who is another nerdy genius child with their own laboratory; Bling-Bling Boy is the Mandark of the show.
** Dukey can also be compared to Monkey, both being animals who have gained unusual abilities because of the genius children, Dukey's being talking, while Monkey becomes a superhero.
** Let's not forget there was also an episode of Dexter's Lab called "Dexter's Lab" in which Dexter finds a lost dog which he teaches to speak English.
** Not helping the show's case, the concept for Johnny Test was supposedly created in 1995. In other words, shortly after the first episode of Dexter's Lab aired in February 1995.
** One episode had Johnny and Dukey being transported to a genderbent dimension. It's highly likely it was created in the wake of the popularity of the Fionna & Cake episodes of ''WesternAnimation/AdventureTime''.
* TheyWastedAPerfectlyGoodCharacter:
** What non-fans tend to think of Dukey.
*** Same for Mary and Susan.
** Essentially, major characters get this treatment in favor of Johnny.
** TheyWastedAPerfectlyGoodPlot: due to the above-explained reason, and the borderline lack of ADayInTheSpotlight for supporting characters.
* UncannyValley: Speed [=McCool=] and Monkey; although that's probably intentional.
** The poor flash animation (starting in season two and getting worse from there) and bizarre, strangely exaggerated facial expressions (along with most characters' lack of pupils) are surprisingly unsettling; none of this is helped by the unappealing (or just plain ugly in some cases) character designs.
* VindicatedByHistory: Now that the constant airings for JT have ceased (it shows up occasionally on ''Boomerang''), the vitriol has loosened up since the show wasn't being shoved in our face anymore and thus didn't give haters something to complain about. Say what you want about the show, but at the least the hatred didn't start until after CN started overplaying it which, as you can see on this page, was the main complaint against it. To many before that happened, it was an average enough comedy series. After it finally ended, it got replaced with something that many viewers considered far worse: ''WesternAnimation/TeenTitansGo'', which had much more unlikable characters, stupid plots and was constantly airing around the clock to the point detractors would rather go back to this series. When some viewers compared the two shows, they admitted at the least ''Johnny Test'' tries to be likeable and funny, and was a much more bearable watch than ''[=TTG=]''.
* WereStillRelevantDammit: There's a noticeable amount of perceived desperation to appeal to kids (most episodes' titles [[ItsAllAboutMe have Johnny's name in them]]), appalling most people.
** Probably the worst example of this would be the Website/YouTube (or rather, [[BlandNameProduct "Snooptube"]]) episode... in 2010.
*** In fact, looking up the website redirects you to Nick.com.
* WhatAnIdiot: Johnny's idea to replace toy cereal prizes with real, lethal laser guns for kids in Johnny-O's isn't a good idea. And that's the tip of the iceberg for Johnny's schemes.
* TheWoobie:
** Dukey, who always seems to get frozen in a block of ice or turned to stone. Also, the episode "Bathtime for Johnny" where Johnny "forgot" his birthday and he sobbed his heart out for nearly the whole episode (see TearJerker above). Last but not least, most people go out of their way in the show to point out how ugly he is.
** Mary and Susan, on occasion.
