* AlasPoorScrappy: Atticus privately mourns [[spoiler:Fjalar, whom Brighid incinerated]]. It's very hard for readers to feel sorry about it though, given what [[spoiler:he]] attempted.
* AlternateCharacterInterpretation:
** Hearne takes quite a few liberties in his interpretations of several mythological characters including the Celtic gods Aengus Óg and Brighid. The worst is Thor who goes from one of the most heroic gods in all of mythology and protector of mankind to a sadistic sociopath.
** Thor's case, at least, is justified by explaining that Odin ensured that his stories and the others of the Norse were written down, at least in part to make them look good.
*** Additionally, there are many other versions of Thor, some of which probably ''are'' heroic protectors of mankind. This is confirmed in the series finale, when [[spoiler: the reincarnated Thor appears, being much more benevolent and noble, and actually thanks Atticus for killing his previous self, as he'd gone down some dark paths.]]
** Just how intolerant and wrong are/were The Hammers of God, and how justified is their crusade against witches and werewolves (in addition to more explicit evils like vampires and demons)? Even sympathetic witches openly exploit ordinary people (ostensibly protecting them from less benevolent witches in exchange) and werewolves have been known to JoinOrDie people who know too much. And they go after Atticus because they think he's a SinisterMinister who consorts with demons, which they have good reason to believe.
* BrokenBase: The inclusion of Granuaile and [[spoiler:Owen]] as POV characters. For some fans, this helps the world feel bigger by getting into the heads of someone new and exploring alternative plots. For others, however, the additional POV characters don't feel distinct enough to stand on their own and instead feel like a distraction from the main plot/Atticus' POV, if not outright padding.
* IKnewIt: Show of hands everyone who foresaw [[spoiler: Atticus' old archdruid still being alive.]]
* MoralEventHorizon:
** Aenghus Og drawing on so much power to open a portal to Hell that it kills the surrounding Earth for like twenty square miles. As a Tuatha de Dannan, Aenghus Og is a druid whose tattoos connect him intimately to the planet. [[ItsPersonal Atticus does not take it well]].
** Hel showing up [[spoiler:in the body of the recently deceased widow Mac Donagh]]. Another case of ItsPersonal for Atticus.
* {{Narm}}: Ever since she started getting POV chapters, Granuaille can hardly pass one without obsessing over her step-father even when she's got more important things to be worrying about, like the impending end of the world or death by divine snake venom. However, this is intentional, and she begins to worry about it.
* NightmareFuel: It isn't shown, but Coyote mentions getting eaten alive by Garm, alive and conscious the entire time. ResurrectiveImmortality or not, that cannot have been pleasant.
* RootingForTheEmpire: Loki's a suave manipulator. Granuaile is a stuck up hypocrite with, ironically, a god complex, prior to being RescuedFromTheScrappyHeap. It's not that hard to take Loki's side, TheEndOfTheWorldAsWeKnowIt notwithstanding.
* TheScrappy: Granuaile from ''Hunted'' onwards, not coincidentally coinciding with her introduction as a POV character. Many found her POV grating and her character developing into a vain self-righteous hypocrite, before she was RescuedFromTheScrappyHeap in ''Staked''. However, ''Scourged'' returned her to this after [[spoiler:she broke up with Atticus for attempting to keep her safe in the final battle, coming across as [[ItsAllAboutMe incredibly self-centered]]. Especially as she broke up with him ''and'' kicked him out of the house right after he lost his arm and connection to Gaia]].
* TakeThatScrappy: In ''Staked'', Laksha finds herself in the body of a woman who is abused by her entire family. Granuaile tries to convince her to leave and finds herself ''harshly'' rebuked by Laksha, who views her circumstances as karma for a lifetime of evil, and who points out that Granuaile is a wealthy globe-trotting Druid who can pull up stakes at any point and be completely fine, which other women in similar situations as Laksha can not claim. Laksha says that she is on her own spiritual journey for redemption whereas Granuaile if anything has gotten worse since they first met. Doesn't do anything to change Granuaile's mind though - though she does apologise once Laksha rebukes her and she realises that [[spoiler: Laksha's host was suicidal and Laksha is trying to persuade her to take back her body some day]]. Additionally, she does kind of have a point when she says that Laksha can go any time she likes.
* TooBleakStoppedCaring: There have been a few complaints to this effect, even InUniverse from Granuaile. Atticus, while firmly on the side of good, is more than willing to let a few crimes fall by the wayside in the service of what he views as more significant goals and many many of the gods operate on JerkassGods, and get away with it mainly by virtue of being gods.
* TheWoobie: Surprisingly enough, ''The Morrigan''. [[spoiler: She hated being a {{Jerkass God|s}}, but all of her attempts to change herself were met with abject failure, so she ultimately let herself be killed.]]
