* AntiClimaxBoss:
** Even after being turned into a chimera, Kiba one shots [[spoiler:Freed]] like nothing.
** Kokabiel, the BigBad of Volume 3, could be considered this as well due to the sudden [[CurbStompBattle curb-stomping]] he received from Vali as a means to hype up the latter's power.
** Leonardo of the Hero Faction. He is established to have control of one of the most [[SuperPowerLottery overpowered]] Longinus' known to exist...[[spoiler:and yet, he suddenly loses off-screen, and ends up randomly becoming Shalba Beelzebub's [[BrainwashedAndCrazy brainwashed]] henchman.]]
** The Old Satan faction. Katerea is quickly defeated by Azazel with only a self-sacrificed arm to show for her efforts, Cluzerei gets vaporized by Sirzechs a few minutes after his introduction, and Shalba is [[CurbStompBattle curb-stomped]] by Issei twice, the first as a result of Juggernaut Drive and the second resulted in Issei's first kill [[spoiler:though Shalba manages a MutualKill through underhanded means.]]
* AssPull:
** The [[spoiler:''Breast'' God]] appearing to help defeat Loki. To be fair though, [[TropesAreNotBad it's even treated as one in-universe]].
** The relationship trauma Raynare caused to Issei is a major theme that Issei has to overcome in volume 10. However, despite being one of the most loved volumes amongst fans, it ''can'' come off feeling suddenly out-of-nowhere as there was absolutely no {{Foreshadowing}} in the prior volumes to show that Issei had been suffering in this regard. The anime actually sets this up better by [[{{Foreshadowing}} showing glimpses of the trauma]] [[AdaptationExpansion at the start of the third season]], which was only just starting up the volume 5 content at that point.
** Plus, as much as many people liked that Kiba achieved Balance Breaker, the way he did so fits the description: he achieved it through releasing the souls inside the crystal that his friends souls were trapped in, which allowed him a resolution of heart. Thus, he achieves Balance Breaker. Though, even though Balance Breaker is stated in the first two volumes, this came completely out of left field. As well, [[spoiler: Kiba achieved Blade Blacksmith's Balance Breaker]] even though it was never hinted until Volume 10 he had another Sacred Gear. It isn't possible to actually DEVELOP a second Sacred Gear you aren't born with.
* AudienceAlienatingPremise: Despite the exciting plot threads and [[ShownTheirWork well-researched lore]], its {{ecchi}} overlays may definitely put off many people.
* BigLippedAlligatorMoment: Fafnir's ''cooking'' show in Volume 17 during what is supposed to be an intense battle between Issei and company against the forces of Qlippoth. Rias lampshades it as well.
* BaseBreakingCharacter:
** In spite of being the most popular villain in the series, to say that Raynare is a divisive character is an understatement: one half says that Raynare is nothing more than a {{smug|Snake}}, [[DirtyCoward coward]] villain who deserved her comeuppance by the hands of Rias, especially for killing Issei with no good reason. The other half, instead, says that the psychological damage Raynare inflicted to Issei made the series a lot more interesting, and also that she could have at least had some of her backstory expanded. And ''then'' there are those who [[DracoInLeatherPants whitewash]] her like she's [[Literature/HarryPotter Draco Malfoy]].
** Vali is also recipient of this: he is either one of the more badass characters in the series or an utterly obnoxious MartyStu, with little middle ground.
** Not even Issei is immune to this: one half of the fanbase says that he is a refreshing change to the otherwise extremely flat and boring harem lead formula and depicts the audience quite well, or his perverted nature at times becomes far too annoying at best or he is way too much of an idiot at worst (despite some CharacterDevelopment in his part).
* BrokenBase: Despite the ''[=DxD=]'' fanbase being surprisingly mature, there are some things that most fans don't heartily agree upon.
** If there's one thing fans really can't agree on, it's the Gremory-Sitri [[TournamentArc Rating Game.]] Was it thoroughly justified that the Gremory team had a limiter working against them, thus giving them a real wake up call that just powering through everything isn't really all there is to it, or was it unfair to the Gremory team that they had a limiter on them when they couldn't show off what they could do now after their training? Or you're probably on the third faction and thought that the limiter made the Sitri team look weak, never mind Souna [[TheChessmaster being able to adapt things on the fly]] [[SarcasmMode because only the protagonist has the right to be a]] CombatPragmatist [[SarcasmMode right?]] Part of the problem really is because Issei, the protagonist himself, gets taken out ''halfway through the game because of said limiter imposed'' when most series would have the protagonist be present all the way to the end.
** Who is better? Rias or Akeno? Although almost all fans like both of them at the same time, [[RuleOfCautiousEditingJudgement let's just leave it at that.]] Some TakeAThirdOption and instead choose Asia... or Koneko which is, [[TokenMiniMoe err, complicated]].
** The ever present Dub vs Sub debate. Complicating the issue is that the dub is [[GagCensor censored]] [[note]] [[SubvertedTrope Though some sites tend to replace the episodes with the uncensored version the next day/a week afterward]] [[/note]], but is full of {{Woolseyism}}.
** The third season of the anime has garnered particular attention for altering the timing of some events from the novels. See the entry for TheyChangedItNowItSucks for more.
* CompleteMonster:
** [[AxCrazy Freed Sellzen]] was an exorcist who worked for the Holy Church, but did not believe in God and [[HeWhoFightsMonsters only joined to fight monsters]]. When the church kicked him out, he was free to kill anyone he wanted whether they were monsters or humans, eventually becoming [[PsychoForHire hired help]] for several of the series [[BigBadEnsemble Big Bads]]. When he first appears, he murders one of Issei Hyodou's clients and tries to kill [[TheProtagonist Issei]] himself, only to be stopped by Asia Argento. When Freed notices they met before, he [[AttemptedRape tries to rape her in front of Issei]], only to be stop when Rias and her peerage came, causing him to retreat, taking Asia with him. He later appears working for [[StarterVillain Raynare]], but only when she offered to have sex with him, and quickly abandons her when she gets overpowered. He later appears under [[BloodKnight Kobakie's]] employment, during which time he commits more atrocities, ranging from nearly beating Irina to death, to taunting Rias's knight Kiba with the fact that his swords where created from the experiments that killed Kiba's friends, while the two were fighting. In his final appearance, he was captured by the Khaos Brigade and willingly became a chimera so that he could finally kill the heroes and even [[ImAHumanitarian ate two of their knights]] to make sure he didn't lose [[note]]He still lost and was finally killed[[/note]]. Psychotic and perverted to a fault, Freed Sellzen manages to give a new meaning to the term LightIsNotGood and become one of the heroes' most dangerous and disgusting foes.
** [[MadScientist Valper Galilei]] doesn't appear as threatening as most villains, but his actions make up for that fact. When he was still working for the church, he was in charge of the "Holy Sword Project". He was [[AmbitionIsEvil so obsessed with wielding a holy sword]], that when he learned he couldn't, he turned his attention towards those who could. He kidnap dozens of children for the "Holy Sword Project", where he would perform [[WouldHurtAChild heinous experiments on them]], with fatal results for many. When the children weren't capable of wielding a holy sword, he simply has them all killed; there was only [[SoleSurvivor one child]] who survived. The church was [[EveryoneHasStandards so disgusted]] with Galilei, they excommunicated him, resulting in him seeking revenge against the church. He planned to do so by allying himself with the Fallen Angles, particularly with [[BloodKnight Kokabiel]]. When he notices that [[spoiler:Kiba]], the one boy who survived, became [[spoiler:a knight under Rias Gremory]] he mocks him with the fact that all of those children who died were worthless and that he should have died with them, [[LackOfEmpathy showing how little he cares for the children]]. Utterly heartless in his endeavors, it was no surprise that many would consider angels and devils having more humanity than [[HumansAreTheRealMonsters him]].
** [[TheFriendNobodyLikes Diodora Astaroth]], the GreaterScopeVillain of Volume 1 and the ArcVillain of Volume 6, first seems like a guy hopelessly in love with Asia, even trying to bargain with Rias to obtain her, but when Rias rejects his offers, some of his true colors shows when he kidnaps Asia and put her into a device that would drain her life force. When Rias and her peerage tries to rescue her, he [[TheReveal reveals]] that he was the reason that Asia was kicked out of the church when he, a devil, [[WoundedGazelleGambit pretended to be injured]] so she could heal him, and tried to capture her as part of his peerage. Asia was lucky to escape, as it turns out Diodora is a [[SerialRapist sex fiend]] with a nun fetish who goes to various churches, captures various nuns, and turns them into his {{sex slave}}s against their will. He not only reveals this with glee, but when fighting [[TheProtagonist Issei]] he says it may be fun to [[RapeIsASpecialKindOfEvil rape Asia]] everyday whenever she calls out his name, showing he never loved Asia but just sees her as part of his nun collection. When Issei finally defeats him, Diodora still made plans for the life draining device to kill Asia should he fail to have her. Overall, while [[FauxAffablyEvil seemingly polite and charming]], his actions cement him as one of the vilest villains of the series.
%% Do not list anyone as a Complete Monster without the clean-up thread approval.
* CrazyAwesome:
** Seriously, if he wasn't the protagonist, Issei would be dead by now with all the crazy stuff he can pull off. To wit, he has: done a rescue mission to Asia by ''punching out a Fallen Angel so hard she bursts through the wall'' (out the window in the anime), barged in an engagement party full of devils to take back Rias, ''invented Dress Break and Bilingual out of pure lust'', defeats Riser, ''an immortal phoenix'', not with the use of his newly-found dragon powers, but by using a holy cross and holy water which he can't even use because he's a devil, but is capable to do so because his arm is a dragon's, powers up with lust and by using Rias' breasts, [[spoiler:accidentally ''summons the Breast God'' (well Breast Fairy but still definitely counts), is capable of ''breathing fire'' to a shadow-using opponent, and was able to make the past users of Boosted Gear come back to the light and make them stop relying on Juggernaut Drive ''with breasts'']]. If there's one thing Rias recruited to her group, it's the fact that she recruited ''the'' craziest character of the series. ''No one'' out-crazies Issei at all in this series. And yet somehow, he's also the OnlySaneMan in the group (when he's not doing his lecherous ways).
** Rias may count to a lesser degree too. Who's crazy enough to be willing to bare her breasts open ''just to let Issei get a power up '''in public viewing!?''''' Also renovate Issei's house from a simple house into a six-story mansion with a three-story basement and an elevator '''overnight!?'''
** Azazel too can count as one. The craziest idea he pulled off is that to capture the Issei clones he accidentally unleashed, he suggests the idea of using ''fishing'' on them. ''With porn as the bait''.
*** Forget Azazel himself, ''the entire Grigori institute counts''.
* DieForOurShip:
** Despite being a harem and everything, people seem to not like Asia as much as the rest of the characters because according to the fans, she's too clingy to Issei to share with everybody else.
*** This lightened up (for novel readers, at least) after the introduction of Fafnir, who adds many humorous moments to Asia's character and gives her a much needed power up.
** Koneko isn't safe from this either, possibly due to her much more prudish behavior towards Issei than the rest of the girls. However, her [[CharacterDevelopment character arc]] in Volume 5, which caused her to lighten up to Issei more, mitigated this a bit.
* EarWorm: The ED from the animes first season. It ''will'' get stuck in your head.
** The "Oppai Dragon" song, performed by [[Creator/YuukiKaji Issei's seiyuu]] for the third season's second promo video, is probably even worse. [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5IXvEF8RhhY Click at your own risk.]]
* EnsembleDarkhorse:
** Mil-tan has appeared in only a few scenes, and is one of the most discussed characters in the series. Take note, he's a CreepyCrossdresser.
*** There are groups of fans who continue to insist Mil-tan is actually the [[GodIsDead supposedly dead Bible God]] and is just screwing with everyone because its funny.
** Ophis is particularly well-loved by the audience too.
** Kuroka is shown to enjoy a good degree of popularity in the fandom, and is possibly the only girl in the show itself to rival Rias and Akeno in popularity. All in all, she definitely does eclipse her younger sister Koneko in popularity. [[BlatantLies Perhaps coincidentally]], her breast size is also third after Akeno and Rias among recorded characters. This is also possibly one of the reasons of [[BreakoutCharacter her subsequent inclusion into the harem]].
** Among the Church Trio, Xenovia is far and away the most popular, mostly thanks to her [[TheComicallySerious extremely blunt personality]].
* EscapistCharacter: Take a wild guess...
* FanPreferredCouple: [[BirdsOfAFeather Issei/Akeno]] seems to edge out the OfficialCouple Issei/Rias in terms of popularity. This is further enhanced by the fact that Akeno is the first girl in the harem that Issei goes out on a date with (barring Asia).
** Some also prefer Issei[=/=][[HoYay Kiba]]. And if they don't like HoYay or want a variety, there's also Issei[=/=][[AttractiveBentGender Yumi]].
* FandomRivalry: Some [[FanDumb rather rabid]] ''Manga/AttackOnTitan'' fanboys don't look on ''[=DxD=]'' in a good way, if simply [[HateDumb because they don't like how series protagonist]] Eren Yeager [[Creator/YuukiKaji shares his voice]] with a LovableSexManiac. This rivalry, however, is mostly [[UnknownRival one-sided]], since the ''[=DxD=]'' fandom doesn't really care about ''[=AoT=]'' in one way or another.
* FriendlyFandoms: More prominently with ''LightNovel/TheTestamentOfSisterNewDevil'', ''LightNovel/DateALive'', ''Manga/DailyLifeWithMonsterGirl'', and ''VideoGame/SenranKagura'', but there is also a chance that a ''[=DxD=]'' fan may also be a fan of ''Manga/ToLoveRu'' ([[VitriolicBestBuds even though the respective fandoms are used to some gibes between each other]]).
* FunnyAneurysmMoment : An in-universe example. One of the short stories of the series was about the Issei clones that Azazel had played a prank on Issei. It was mostly funny until the part where they had to use the memory-erasing machine Azazel had invented (at best, they could only erase the memory of the clones running around but didn't erase the fact that an Issei clone did it, leaving the victims thinking the real Issei had done it to them because it would damage their brain memory). At that point in time, it was hilarious, albeit a bit unfair to Issei who didn't really deserve all that. Fast forward to volume fourteen, and that memory-erasing machine incident suddenly doesn't become funny anymore [[spoiler: thanks to the student council group using it to wipe off the memories of the students were the victim of a rouge wizard terrorist attack at the school, which leaves students traumatized of something but not ''what'']]. This left a bitter taste to the student council and the protagonists.
* HarsherInHindsight: The series is banned in New Zealand on the counts that it promotes child pornography. Then comes why Funimation couldn't reprise Creator/ScottFreeman for Issei in ''[=BorN=]'', even if they waited to dub it normally, as it's revealed that he got arrested and convicted for multiple counts of possession of child pornography. This also makes the scene where Issei uses his Dress Breaker against Riser Phenex's peerage uncomfortable to watch.
* HilariousInHindsight:
** Vali notes back in the fourth volume that the current red-white dragon rivalry was a bit unfair because Vali's the descendant of the old Lucifer and Issei's the son of a common {{Muggle}}. Vali wishes that Issei's parents were a bit special so they can have a more interesting match. [[spoiler:Now that Great Red and Ophis are both Issei's parents by proxy by creating a body for him from Great Red's flesh and Ophis' powers, let's just say [[TemptingFate Vali's wish came true.]] Though seeing as Vali's a BloodKnight, he's probably pleased with the development.]]
** The volume one afterword has the supposedly final battle will be between a guy who can breath flames and Issei supposedly shooting out a blaster. [[spoiler: Now read how the final clash between Issei and Jabberwocky went in volume 12.]]
** For those who have played ''VideoGame/TheLastRemnant'', whenever [[Creator/KenjiNojima Kiba calls]] Irina Shidou, [[ActorAllusion you might be reminded of how Rush always calls Irina.]]
* HoYay: Believe it or not, [[HoYay/HighSchoolDXD now has its own page!]]
* {{HSQ}}: Among the highest in the history of light novels.
* InternetBackdraft: The less said about the third anime season, ''Highschool [=DxD=] [=BorN=]'', the better[[note]]Despite the first two seasons adapting the first 4 light novels faithfully, the third season ending up rushing + jumbling around certain events, through the next 3 novels of content. As well as ending on an anime-original two-parter that resulted in a GeckoEnding.[[/note]]. Long story short, some fans were ''not'' happy with the latest adaptation. The fact that Ichibei Ishibumi supervised the anime more then the previous 2 seasons, makes the third season rushing around similarly bizarre.
* LauncherOfAThousandShips: Issei, [[HaremSeeker though this isn't really surprising.]]
* MartyStu:
** Vali is close to being considered one as practically his entire character is centered around seeking out foes stronger than him just because he's bored. To be fair though, the story happens to have A LOT of battle seeking maniacs that it makes having Vali all the more satisfying to have around. [[spoiler:And he ''does'' finally gain a more humane reason to get stronger after his hated grandfather enters the picture in volume 16.]]
** Issei can also be considered one, though CharacterDevelopment has helped him in that regard. He's also regarded to be more of an EscapistCharacter of sorts.
** In a meta example, few fandoms have as many Marty Stu stories as this series. It's harder to find stories that ''don't'' portray Issei or the [=OC=] that replaces him as one.
* MemeticBadass:
** ''Issei motherfucking Hyodo.'' What did you expect from somebody who has just as many Badass tropes as [[VideoGame/TheElderScrollsVSkyrim the freaking Dragonborn]]?
** Also, '''GAR'''sper[[note]]He ''literally annihilates enemies[[/note]], Azazel[[note]]His crazy inventions plus does things with style[[/note]], and Sirzechs[[note]]Scaring the crap out of Hades[[/note]] are very prominent in the {{Imageboards}}.
** Vali is also seen as this by his supporters. Being an [[LightNovel/ACertainMagicalIndex Accelerator]] {{Expy}} who took almost 10 volumes for Issei to outdo completely certainly helps matters.
* MemeticMolester: Good lord, Riser. Freed and Diodora have it even worse.
* MemeticMutation:
** Somewhat a meta example: if any volume is delayed for its release, expect people to post about Ishibumi and trains. Fandom just went with it.[[note]]It's because Ishibumi keeps himself hitting his shoulder on the train doors.[[/note]]
** Doctor Crimson and Canary Maid which is especially prevalent at {{Imageboards}}.[[note]]Sirzechs is drawn with a fabulous mustache with Grayfia acting as his assistant and is noted to be [[PaperThinDisguise Not-Sirzechs]]. Not exactly farfetched considering Sirzechs is a BunnyEarsLawyer.[[/note]]
** The first ending credits of the anime. [[{{Understatement}} Probably]] has to do with Koneko-chan shaking that.
* {{Moe}}: Lots of the girls in the series. Asia and Koneko are perhaps the most obvious cases.
* MostWonderfulSound: '''BOOST!'''
** To a rarer extent, when Ddraig gets to use his rival's power: '''DIVIDE!'''
* RewatchBonus: Oh so many. Even the author recommended to re-read the entire series before the fourth arc started.
* RonTheDeathEater: For whatever bizarre reason, Issei is made to be a much bigger loser then he really was at the beginning of the story to make whatever OC insert fanfic writers make to make him look better then Issei, usually accompanied with stealing Issei's harem members if Issei is still around in the story if not outright replaced entirely.
** Rias also gets this, due to people exaggerating her Selfishness from early on in the series, completely missing the point that as a devil, regardless of how kindhearted they could be, are still inherently selfish to a fault, with Rias not being the only devil that's portrayed as this despite good intentions.
* OneSceneWonder: The [[spoiler:''Breast'' God]] when she appeared before Issei to help him defeat the evil God, Loki.
* OT3: Issei/Rias/Akeno is probably the most popular out of all of the show's [=OT3s=].
* PeripheryDemographic: To the surprise of Ishibumi, there are a lot of female fans of the series despite the numerous amounts of {{Fanservice}}. Heck, one bookstore had [[http://i.imgur.com/Xl1AWkz.jpg?1 the series volumes]] in the women section.
* SignatureScene:
** Issei's "death" at the hands of Raynare which set the tone for the story to be much more than a basic {{Harem}} series.
** Issei waking up in his bed next to a naked Rias.
* TheyChangedItNowItSucks: Those that read the light novels seem to be having this reaction to the third season of the anime. The order of events has been switched around, details like the charge-up period and time limit of Issei's balance breaker when he can use it at will have been glossed over, and content that only occurs in the anime seem to be the three big offenders for them. While some seem agree that things like the fine details of Issei's balance breaker probably need to be swept under the rug for the sake of the anime's pacing, the anime only content has them up the wall since the light novels have more than enough story in them to last another three to five seasons easily. They basically decry the anime only content as excuses for more fanservice in a series already overflowing to the brim with it.
** [[spoiler:The 7 part novel that comes with each volume of the BorN BD/DVD is about Ise's kids coming back from the future to FIX the anime continuity and prevent the Novel continuity from also being changed.]]
* TheyWastedAPerfectlyGoodCharacter: A small hand of people tend to believe that Raynare died way too early in the story. Some even think that she should have survied, and make for an interesting addition to Issei's harem as a TokenEvilTeammate of some sort.
* TheyWastedAPerfectlyGoodPlot: The vampire civil war that takes place in volumes 14 and 16. The only reasons why the vampires got involved in the plot was just so the writer could introduce [[spoiler:Rizevim Lucifer]], and to give a bit of much needed CharacterDevelopment for Gasper. Some fans thought that the vampire civil war needed more time to take in and develop than what was given.
* ToughActToFollow:
** Not the show itself, but the show-stopping pole-dance ending-song sequence ''Study X Study'' from Season 1, with its [[SugarWiki/AwesomeMusic energetic and upbeat song]] and astoundingly fluid and well-designed animation (all animated by one man, mind you) set ''such'' a high standard (and became a Cult-Favourite amongst fans) that the second/third ending sequence from Season 2 simply couldn't top it, and hence the crew didn't even try.
** The vampire civil war gets this reaction for taking place just moments after the glorious final battle against the Khaos Brigade's Hero Faction; helped by the immense build-up the Hero Faction had until that point. Not only were the vampires incredibly underdeveloped in comparison to the Heroes (Cao Cao in particular), the vampire war, itself, comes off as an irrelevant side-story just to have a setting to introduce the new leaders of the Khaos Brigade.
* WhatAnIdiot: Most people seeing Issei not being able to realize the girls' feelings towards him, though it's {{justified|Trope}} given [[spoiler:the psychological damage he received from his experience with Raynare]]. The crown goes, though, to [[spoiler: the Two Heavenly Dragons (Ddraig and Albion), who decided during the great war to fight God, Satan and the leader of the Fallen Angels. They were quickly dismembered and the Sacred Gears - Boosted Gear and Divine Dividing - are what's left of them stored.]]
** It should be noted that in the last example [[spoiler:it was implied that the process of sealing the two dragons took everything the Three Factions had, may have contributed to the death of God, and left the warring sides too exhausted and spent to continue their war.]]
* {{Woolseyism}}: For their dub, Funimation has noticeably added a fair dose of sexual references and cranked up the eroticism in the dialogue, most notably with Akeno. But given [[{{Ecchi}} the show's nature]], it works brilliantly. Most of the [[Funny/HighSchoolDXD Funny Moments page]] is done using dub vs sub, as a matter of fact.
